What Our Mayor said:

Employment, or rather unemployment,

is a sensitive subject for many people.

Figures of six & seven percent unemployment are worrying, but it also means that 93 or 94 percent of people who want to work are actually employed. So like all debates, there is certainly two sides to the argument. In fact, the latest ABS statistics show there are 303,500 Gold Coast residents employed in July 2011, the highest level in the city’s history. There is no doubt that Australia is experiencing a two-speed economy at present. Towns and cities which service mining regions appear to be weathering the economic storm better than those regions or cities that rely on other economic drivers. In the last decade, Gold Coast City Council has renewed its efforts to diversify our local economy. The Information Technology (IT), Tertiary and Health sectors are all starting to develop as key economic drivers in our city. These emerging sectors greatly assist our traditional economic drivers – Tourism and Construction – and make us more resilient against economic cycles. Ironically, in 2010-2011, a record 11.4 million visitors came to the coast – but they spent less while here and didn’t stay as long as they traditionally world. This hurt our Tourism, retail and leisure markets. To broaden our economic base, one initiative Council is focused on is ‘fly-in, fly-out’ support for our mining industries. Currently, Council is partnering with Gold Coast Airport and a private organisation to try to rebrand the Terminal 2 facility at the airport as a dedicated fly-in, fly-out base for mining companies. The project is progressing well and could see in excess of 2000 ‘locals’ finding work in the mining industries not only in Queensland, but across the country. ‘Fly-in, fly-out’ allows the families of the mine workers to reside on the coast, enjoying world class facilities. Importantly, it allows the mine worker to undertake their employment tasks knowing their family is residing in one of the most liveable cities in the world. Council hopes to be in a position to make further announcements regarding this exciting initiative in the near future. It is just another way in which Council is working to diversify our economic base to ensure the city, and region, can weather changing economic circumstances both today, and in years to come.

Who is Wendy Coe?

DIVISION 7 CANDIDATE

Wendy came to the Gold Coast as a teenager back in 1984, took one look at the place, put on a bikini and decided to stay. For a few years she did “the farm thing” in rural Victoria, however the call of the sun, sand and surf beckoned and she returned with her young daughter in tow (now 19) and has called Surfers home ever since. “I love being a local living in a tourist town. There is always so much on offer, from New Years Eve on the beach, theme parks, football, festivals, the races, surf carnivals and the great cafes. I love it all.” Wendy says, we must never forget that tourism is our bread and butter and we must throw everything we have at protecting the industry. We must adapt to new markets, (the Chinese tourist dollar has yet to hit Australia), explore niche holiday markets and encourage our southern friends to keep coming here year after year. She is committed to the Allconnex “divorce” and capping rates to the CPI and if elected will push for FREE Parking in Surfers Paradise on the weekends, to encourage more families back into the heart of out city. She was a founding member of the Save Evandale Lake and Parklands Group. “I’m very proud that we managed to save this wonderful swimming hole for the whole community”. She also is a strong supporter of Daylight Saving and “dipped her toe into politics” in the last State Election. She still enjoys the laid back lifestyle of the Gold Coast, although these days, not in a bikini.

With it’s white, sandy beaches and beautiful hinterland the Gold Coast is seen by many Australians as the home of the national dream of property ownership. But mention that you’re looking for a home loan at your local bank and they won’t be able to move fast enough to get your signature on one of their deals. But how do you know you’re getting a fair shake? That’s where local business Fast Funding comes into play. Located in Chevron Island in the heart of the Gold Coast’s burgeoning property market, Fast Funding is home to a team of finance brokers and home loan specialists.

Banks, while obviously driven by profit, may attempt to sign you up to a loan that is unsuited to your needs, but as Fast Funding is different. As the company operates as an independent, they are not pushing one product over another and, according to Mr Ghoussain, brokers generally receive the same commission no matter where they place the loan application. Mr Ghoussain explained that while banks employees may have a basic knowledge of the product they sell, Fast Funding Consultants are experts in their field and are required to keep up with movements in the industry with ongoing education.

According to Managing Director, Joseph Ghoussain, Fast Funding is a team of brokers and as such has access to all the same loans as your bank, as well as every other bank and financial institution providing the borrower with a multitude of choice for that all important life decision.

“Bank employees do not have the same qualifications of a Fast Funding Consultant,” he said. “All Fast Funding Consultants maintain membership of an industry body such as the Finance Brokers Association of Australia and as such are required to undergo continuing professional training.”

“The banks have been trying hard to undermine the role of mortgage brokers such as Fast Funding in the new home loan application process,” Mr Ghoussain said.

Deciding to make the call and organise a meeting with a Fast Funding consultant when you’re looking for a loan could be a decision that saves you thousands of dollars over the term of your loan.

“There is no doubt that borrowers who utilise the services of a mortgage broker are much better informed and invariably obtain a home loan that is better suited to their needs,” he said.

here’s the best thai in town?

Explore your senses at... Situated in the very heart of Broadbeach just a short stroll from the Gold Coast’s pristine sunny beaches, Thai Thai on Broadbeach Restaurant is exactly the kind of place you love to find so you can tell your family and friends about it. For us at whowhatwhere, it’s one of the growing number of great restaurants at which we always want to eat when we dine at Broadbeach.

There are dozens of enticing meal selections with generous servings made mild or spicy, depending on your tastes and it’s all for an affordable price. If you are looking for an excellent meal on the tourist strip, you cannot go past Thai Thai’s enticing atmosphere and delicious flavours right in the beating heart of Broadbeach.

Stunningly positioned on the ground floor of the Mantra Phoenician Resort right on the corner of Queensland Avenue, you can’t possibly walk past this eye catching restaurant as you amble along Surf Parade. Inside, Thai Thai is beautifully decorated with ample space for social functions and events with tables and settings for any number of groups and, best of all, a quiet corner or two if it’s just for the two of you.

Thai Thai on Broadbeach Restaurant is exactly the kind of place you love to find so you can tell your family and friends about it. it’s one of the growing number of great restaurants at which we always want to eat when we dine at Broadbeach.

We like the partial open kitchen where the activity is always at a frenetic pace. One thing is for sure, at Thai Thai you will always be greeted with a warm smile and, no matter how busy it gets, you will always receive courteous friendly service whether it’s lunch or dinner, seven days a week. Thai Thai’s Southern Thai cuisine is as authentic as you will find outside of Thailand, ranking alongside Sydney’s best in Pitt Street for quality. Above all, Thai Thai prides itself on it’s perfectly balanced dishes. Across the menu, the sweet, sour and salty flavours blend into an harmonious whole, so no one certain flavour dominates the dish. Customers can order from anywhere on the menu with confidence, but we at Whowhatwhere have some favourites of our own. The ‘Larb Gai’ is a minced chicken salad mixed with special Thai Thai herbs, chilli, lemon juice, ground rice and your choice of meat. The chicken is a favourite and we can assure you, it is not to be missed. whowhatwhere | gold coast lifestyle magazine © 2011

As smartphones have grown smarter and more aware of their surroundings, the rise of location based marketing has been inevitable. Hitting shoppers with targeted advertising when they’re not far from the store makes sense, especially if it’s opt-in so people are choosing to hear from the stores and brands they’re actually interested in, which helps build customer loyalty. It also gives traditional bricks n’ mortar retailers a high-tech weapon in their all out war with online stores. While the technology has been around for a while, location based marketing hasn’t really reached critical mass in Australia. That could change with the launch of QuickerFeet, an iPhone app backed by AMP Capital Shopping Centres which owns 20 shopping centres across Australia. Brands which have signed up with QuickerFeet include General Pants Group, Billabong, Lorna Jane, Bras N Things, Event Cinemas, Thredbo, AMF Bowling and Rydges Resorts. The free QuickerFeet iPhone app lets shoppers view the special deals on offer around their current location, with the option to set the radius from 1km to 100km. Shoppers can also receive instant notifications from their favourite stores. Once in store they simply show staff the message on their phone in order to get the special deal. Of course you’ve got the obligatory social networking tie in, with the ability to share deals and bargains with family and friends via email, Facebook and Twitter. Quicker Feet software is available only on:

Coinciding with Child Protection Week, the titanic effort raised funds to support local children’s charity Bravehearts and also helped launch Neo NetWise’s new internet protection computer program NeoGuardian, which is designed to help parents keep their kids safe from the more unsavoury aspects of cyberspace. “Derek showed some awesome strength today and it really helped Bravehearts and most importantly, raised awareness for Child Protection Week.” Neo NetWise General Manager Fabian Buhagiar said. “Child Protection is an important issue, especially on the internet and that’s what Neo NetWise is all about,” Neo NetWise’s newly launched program NeoGuardian represents a revolutionary step in taking

cyberspace back from would be cyber bullies and paedophilic groomers. The software monitors what children are doing online, putting parents back in control by showing them what websites are being accessed, what programs are being used and even what is being typed while online. The information can be accessed from any internet connection and the program is equipped with a handy notification feature which sends an SMS or email to a parent whenever a key word is entered into the computer. “The internet has brought us the age of information with troves of knowledge becoming available to us all at the click of a mouse,” Mr Buhagiar said. “Unfortunately cyberspace is not without its unsavoury elements and that’s

where NeoGuardian can help,” “This state of the art program gives parents the power to fight back and prevent cyber bullying and online predators. The program allows them to quickly identify a problem so they are able to discuss it in an understanding way with their child.”

While keeping children safe, NeoGuardian also has workplace environments on its radar keeping workers on task and off the distractions of Facebook and other media during work hours. “Time is money in the workplace and the average unmonitored employee wastes approximately 30 percent of their workday on non-work related web browsing,” Mr Buhagiar said. “The costs of data breaches caused by careless malicious employees can be catastrophic for businesses and this program will address that and make sure employees are doing what they’re paid to do,” For more information call Neo NetWise on 1800 269 798 or visit: www.getwiseonline.com

Modena on Chevron delivers privacy, convenience and resort style living at its best. The apartments are extra large with designer open plan living, exceptional fixtures and expansive balconies that capture views by day and night - the meandering Nerang River, majestic city towers and distant hinterland mountains. All this under $5000 a sqm. Modena in Chevron is undoubtedtly the best valued brand new 3 bedroom apartments in Surfers, Broadbeach and Main beach. Marco Ferro of Beretta Property Group told us “We’re applying the Bunning’s hardware marketing to sell real estate and challenging that if you can find a similar brand new apartment we will beat it by 10%*

Chevron island is going through a rejuvenation with the village improvement programme and obviously the local plan changing to create developments of this caliber. The most appealing attribute is that the island offers a village filled with all the amenities and all at walking distance. Marco said “Our next project is in Brisbane called Linear 120 , unlike Modena theses are small units that are suited for first home buyers or investors. Large apartments that are in Modena will be very hard to do again due to present climate. 3 bedroom apartments will be a very hard find in the future on the Gold Coast.” Open for inspection daily - view 3 bedroom apartments from $595k from 10am to 4pm. How ‘d YOU do it Stalkz? “Hip Hop meets Art in a back alley,

Has a food fight! Leaves onlookers starved for Attention!”

That’s not a normal way to start a biography, but then again Stalkz isn’t your normal hip hop artist. He’s a long time Gold Coast rapper whose invested more than 10 years into his art. And that decade has seen him release three full length

albums, play a whole mess of shows and really find himself as a musician. He’s raw, energetic and absolutely refuses to get crunk. His albums are reminiscent of mid 90’s US hip hop, a nostalgic tribute to a time when music really mattered and artists put effort into their craft. His live show captures that very same essence while also incorporating aspects of Dubstep, Drum and Bass and Breakbeat to create one hell of a vibe. It’s boom bap spliced with poetry, its edgy, its breaks all the rules and makes no apologies.

Over the years he has performed along side Thundamentals, The Winnie Coopers, Tommy Illfigga, Rukus Crew, Prophet Rayza, Shoda Ish and many others. His music has received thousands of downloads and been played on national radio stations. And more recently his song “Brave New World” was nominated twice in the 2011 Queensland Music Awards in the categories of Urban and Regional. Stalkz is an artist that just wont quit.

where’sthepartyat?

fastcars,food&fashion...

Main beach’s exclusive Tedder ave was closed from 9am till 9pm, to make way for a party so big the single avenue could barely contain it. Over 5000 revellers were treated to a selection of some of the finest cars, food and fashion the world has to offer. The avenue was littered with Audi’s, BMW’s, Mercedes, Jet Racing Drag Cars, V8 Super Cars and rare vintage gems such as The GTS Falcon 76 and 32 Rodster Hotrod.

As 2pm cruised by, the avenue transformed into a spring carnival catwalk fashion show. A celebration of unique beauty and style hosted by Aussie fashionista Elizabeth McMahon. Crowds were wowed by models showing off the latest designs and styles to hit the Gold Coast. The party carried on well into the night. The rockers rocked on and the animalistic growls of finely tuned imported engines grumbled away in the background. Friends and families, young and old, tucked into some of main beach’s finest restaurants and café’s. An array of gourmet nibblies covered the plates of the hungry, while the more content partiers settled themselves with a frosty beverage instead.

The ambience made complete by performances from US rockers ‘The Real Deal’ , plus local groups The Shazzam Experience and The Wind Up Dolls.

Worn out and in search of sleep, the team of whowhatwhere left Tedder Ave happy to do it again next year. Why not discover Main Beach yourself!

The whowhatwhere team never shy away from a street party, so when we heard about Fast Cars, Food and Fashion on Tedder we had to make an appearance. We came in unsure of what to expect and ended the night buzzing on a euphoric high.

LUXURY MOTORYACHT CRUISING

with. . .

The Broadwater is the Gold Coasts answer to the Sydney Harbour, sophisticated and lavish with a collection of luxurious yachts moored at the Marina Mirage. With some of the most beautiful, protected cruising waters in the whole country, the Gold Coast is quickly becoming the mecca for Australia’s yachting industry. The 26th Audi Sydney to Gold Coast Yacht Race launched in late July and cruised into Southport in early August. The event garners international attention and this year saw Australia’s sporting sweetheart, Jessica Watson, aboard the yacht Another Challenge. With boating events gaining widespread popularity and the undeniable beauty of the Gold Coasts surrounding waters it’s not hard to believe why luxury yachting is so appealing. In the privacy of your own yacht, whether it be for family holidays or romantic adventures, there really isn’t a better way to soak up the Australian summer. So, what are you waiting for? There is no better time to get into the world of boating and the friendly folks at Maritimo Gold Coast will have you sailing the seas in no time. From

where to turn to? Every summer millions of Australians take to the highways and roads in search of fun, sun, and adventure. Car trouble, usually due to neglected preventive maintenance, brings an abrupt end to vacation plans. The situation usually means more than just a repair bill. It can involve towing charges, lodging and possibly a rental car. This scenario usually can be avoided with a pre-vacation inspection performed by the vehicle owner or a qualified automotive technician. So take some time to make sure that your vehicle is ready to take you to paradise. All it takes is a few minutes of preventative maintenance in your driveway and you can help eliminate hours of costly on-the-road problems. 44
