TIRES PNEUS · REIFEN
Producer of high quality tires with distinctive looks and a healthy dose of Swissness. That’s the concept onza® tires has lived by for the past 10 years. A decade of work that
Photo Hoshi Yoshida
has seen the brand achieve some impressive results, with the likes of former ERA team rider Roger Rinderknecht, winner of the 2012 4X World Championship title, or Marine Cabirou, the 2015 Junior DH World Champion. And then there is the 2017 racing season, with YT Mob’s Aaron Gwin laying down some absolutely incredible runs, including World Cup wins in Leogang and Mont Sainte Anne. All have contributed to the ever-increasing presence of onza® tires on bikes worldwide, backed up by positive recognition in the worlds' MTB press, and general word-ofmouth among riding enthusiasts. For 2018, our product range expands with new products from Downhill to Cross Country, developed with the help of our ERA riders. The growing E-MTB market has not been ignored, with a new E-MTB specific casing construction making its appearance for the first time. Our tires may perform with the best in terms of traction, flat protection and weight, but we won’t stop doing what it takes to make them even better. Bring on the next decade!

“ERA” - elite racing associates The ERA abbreviation can be found on the sidewalls of selected onza® tires products. It stands for "Elite Racing Associates“. onza® tires has created the ERA program to offer special variations of existing tire models for its team riders. These products vary from regular models in terms of compound, sidewall thickness or even tread design. In racing, even small details can be decisive! The ERA program had its first peak in 2012, when BMX and 4X legend Roger Rinderknecht won the 4X World Championships. In 2015, VoulVoul Racing Team rider Marine Cabirou became Junior DH World Champion, another great success for the young onza® brand. They say rolling stones gather no moss, so onza® tires wasted no time working on the next big challenge. Since 2016, Aaron Gwin and his YT Mob team mates Neko Mulally and Ángel Suárez have been carrying the onza® tires flag, riding trails and downhill courses around the globe. The result of this World Cup level commitment is the AQUILA tire, onza® tires’ latest creation. This tire showed its incredible performance during the 2017 DH World Cup series, with a win at Leogang and a win at Mont Sainte Anne aboard Aaron Gwin’s bike. You only have to watch the wet and muddy Mont Sainte Anne race run, hailed as one of the greatest runs in history, to see the confidence Aaron has in the AQUILA tire. Other great onza® products will follow, developed, designed and tested by our ERA collective. Stay tuned!

CITIUS CITIUS means faster. Since 1894 the Olympic Games motto has been “Citius, altius, fortius”, meaning “faster, higher, stronger”. Perfect name then for this tire! But just being faster won’t do. With this tire we aim to be the fastest of them all.

IBEX The IBEX (or Capricorn) is known for fast, smooth and safe locomotion in mountainous terrain, and the tire named after it is no different: Thanks to its wide open tread, you do not need to compromise on either loose gravel or in wet conditions. No trail is too steep, no section too narrow and no root too slippery for this all round tire.

GREINA Traction was the top priority when developing onza® tires’ tread for wet and muddy conditions. Named after a high alpine plateau littered with numerous creeks and tarns, the GREINA’s wide open knobs find traction even in the worst mud without clogging.

LYNX The LYNX is an animal renowned for moving smoothly, quickly and efficiently over terrain, but it can also extend its claws whenever grip levels are insufficient. onzaŽ tires‘ LYNX does exactly that. The fast rolling tread design allows you to fully exploit the improved traction bigger wheels offer you. Accentuated cross blocks transfer both acceleration and braking forces to the ground with minimal loss while the shoulder knobs excel in increasing directional control. Show the LYNX a set of scales and it bares its claws to the competition with a very competitive weight.

SVELT The go to tire for those looking for the perfect combination of efficiency, grip and speed. This is where the all-new SVELT comes to play! The flat, lowprofile, block tread, lets the SVELT roll rapidly with virtually no resistance on dry surfaces. The goal was simply to design a tire that rolled effortlessly. That being said, we could not possibly put something into the mountains that didn’t meet our DNA of tires that like to be ridden aggressively. The pronounced shoulder profile features extreme grip in loose, wet terrain, at high speeds. The combination of its nimbleness and aggressiveness - make SVELT a jack of all trades for Cross Country and Marathon riders!

Interview James Doerfling , onza® ERA Team Rider For onza® tires ERA rider and Big Mountain freerider James Doerfling, it seems that no trail is too steep, no descent too fast, no challenge too big or no drop too high. Whether on his local trails around Williams Lake up in British Columbia, Canada or on Red Bull's Rampage freeride event in Utah, USA, James constantly seeks out the gnarliest, steepest and most thrilling lines he can, taking himself, his bike and its equipment to the limit. On his rides, James truly trusts in the reliability, quality and performance of onza® tires. You are a Big Mountain rider, who likes to shred the most demanding trails with huge jumps and stunts. How did you become a freerider? What made you love that particular style of riding? I am fortunate that I grew up with some of the best freeriding in the world right in my back yard. So I was always exploring and roaming the hills while I was growing up. I think just growing up In Williams Lake really shaped the kind of riding and that’s the reason I became the rider I am today.
You are from Williams Lake, British Columbia. Why do you think a large part of the world’s best freeriders come from Canada? There must be something in the Canadian water I guess… What does a typical day look like in the life of James Doerfling? Having coffee… digging… shredding… and maybe wrenching on something in the evening. You have the chance to travel the world, riding in the best locations. Have you thought about the future? Are bicycles involved? Yes, the future is constantly on my mind. Biking will always be a part of my life, but I do have a lot of ideas or plans which are non-bike related. What was your scariest moment on a bike you’ve ever experienced? I’ve had some pretty scary crashes at the Red Bull Rampage for sure! Everything there is just on another level, so it is always hard not to be stressed out.
You like to ride our skinwall tires, going so far as to shave the beard. Any plans to grow it back? I remember when I was riding my first set of onza® skinwalls a few years back. The people were quite skeptical and not open for them yet. But I was convinced they will come back one time. And look, now everyone wants to have them! And in terms of the beard: As soon as it gets cold up here in Canada, I will grow it back I think! What’s the most important thing you require out of a tire when you’re riding events like the Red Bull Rampage? I really need something I can trust in and something which is going to keep me hooked up on those knife ridges and tracks through the moon dust of Rampage. The VISCO GRP40 compound gives me the confidence to do this! What’s your favourite tire model from onza® tires? And why? CITIUS on my front wheel and IBEX in the back, both with VISCO GRP40 compound, is the deadliest combo out there!
onza® tires with skinwall casings are quite trendy. Were you also on skinwall tires back in the 90ties? Actually my first non-training bike was flourescent pink and purple with skinwalls I believe. So yes, I was!

SKINWALL EDITION onzaÂŽ tires is part of mountain biking history, no doubt about it. To honor days bygone, the brand brings old school looks back to mountain bikes: A selection of tire models are available in a skinwall flavor. With the sidewalls lacking a butyl rubber treatment, these tires get a very distinctive look. With riding some skinwalls, we remember the old times of mountain biking!

XIII BMX legend and former ERA rider Roger Rinderknecht has been decisively involved in this tire’s development. This tire combines low rolling resistance and excellent rolling characteristics on hard packed surfaces commonly found on BMX tracks. Further, the small knobs offer plenty of grip too.

LAVIN
sizes 700C
The LAVIN’s strengths are in its low rolling resistance and longevity. Dual-Compound-Rubber turns this one into a reliable training tire. Even the mighty Fluelapass in the Swiss Alps becomes an easy treat with this tire. The LAVIN URBAN seems like a bit of a paradox, fast-rolling yet offering loads of puncture resistance - exactly what a 26 inch tire needs in the urban surroundings.

“Allegra” is a greeting of the Rhaetians in the Grisons region of Switzerland. It means that you’re supposed to enjoy life. For musicians “allegro” means something that strides ahead, in many variations. Thus, it is a perfect name for onza® tires’ commuter, trekking and pedelec tire. Flat protection and low rolling resistance were top priorities while developing this tire.

E-MOUNTAINBIKE For a producer of high-quality bicycle tires featuring refined technologies, innovation comes first! Constant changes in racing, but also in the daily use of bicycles are permanently pushing us to find new technical solutions. Look at the ever-expanding E-MTB segment. Along with the use of lower tire pressures in modern MTB tires and the added weight of the bicycles due to the addition of an electric motor and battery, the risk of a tire failure increases. onza® tires' newly-developed REC technology has been designed to address this. By using an extremely durable carcass with additional reinforcement at the tire bead, ambitious E-mountainbikers get extra high protection against pinch flats, impacts, flat tires and any other type of tire or rim damage.
2018
Reinforced Electro Casing Extremely durable and impact resistant casing technology, specially developed for E-MTB application. Tough five-layer REC protection at the tire beads prevents pinch-flats or damage of the tire or the rim. The special Aramid reinforced REC ply underneath the tread makes the tire very resistant against sharp objects.
Marking for tires specially developed for E-MTB use.
