THE HIPSTER HANDBOOK HOW TO DRESS TO IMPRESS LIKE A HIPSTER
EDI TOR IAL
A state of mind: hipsters and hipsterism Everbody knows them, everybody looks at them and everybody got sometimes a little bit of ‘hipsterism’ inside of them. Hipsterism is, according to the internet, a state of mind. And although this is against all hipster principles, because they want to avoid labels and being labeled, this is what we think. We think of hipsters as: men and women who are in their 20’s and 30’s that value independent thinking. They want to dress to impress. They like the vintage and thrift shop inspired fashion, the tight-fitting jeans, the old sneakers and the eccentric hair style. They hate and reject the mainstream customers. It’s part of the hipster dogma not to be influenced by the mainstream advertising and the mainstream fashion. You will find the typical hipsters in the artisanal coffee shops, the pop-up gin stores and probably in the small record shops that support independent music labels. Most of the time hipsters live in gentrifying neighborhoods, surrounded by hip and trendy bars and restaurants. As already stated, hipsters like to dress to impress. Their fashion is a statement and their looks are creative, deliberately and sometimes even a little progressive. While some people rebel against the hipster subculture; we embrace them and their fashion sense. So, just to celebrate the hipsters all over the world: a small introduction to the hipster street style and their unique way of clothing.
JACK, london Jack Scott (21): “I study Shoe Design and I want to design shoes for the rest of my life. I like things that nobody has. Like my bike; the lock is on the back of the frame. I bet you have never seen this before.
KINA, london Kina (25): “I like to dress casual, but my style is different every day. It depends on my mood. You could see that I am very tired today.
SARAH, london Sarah (24): ‘Well yes, you could call me a tomboy. It’s not like I want to be a man, but I like to dress casual and boy-like. Sometimes I even buy men’s clothing.”
ruben, 's-hertogenbosch Ruben (22): “I try to look a lot AT colors. I always want colors to match. I would like to describe my style as casual fashion. One of my fashion sources is the instagram account of princeinjeans. You should really take a look!
FAOU, 's-hertogenbosch Faou (18): “I wear whatever I like. But I always have different hair. Right now I’m a blond, but last week I had grey hair. I like to experiment with my hair because I think it is getting boring very fast. I like to try a color of which I’m not sure that it will look pretty. I’m always very nervous when I’m at the hairdresser, but usually it turns out very nice.”
ASHLEY, amsterdam Ashley (22): “I base my style on the tomboy look. I get inspiration out of magazines and people around here, but I mostly wear whatever I like.
CELESTE, UTRECHT Celeste (23): “My style is pretty urban with a lot of colors. You would never see me in jeans, I love chinos too much. I like to stand out from the crowd with my afro and colorful clothes.”
SUSAN, BERLIN Susan (19): “I wouldn’t say that my style is eccentric, but my hairstyle definitely is. I love to wear it like this, but you could spot me with stacked braids as well.’
GURBERT, UTRECHT Gurbet (20): “I always like to dress differently. For example, I don’t want to dress like the mainstream crowd. I call it hobo chic; a casual outfit with a little hobo touch, haha.”
KARIN, LONDON KARIN (22): My style is very eclectic I would say. Its a mix between sporty and chic. I love to dress up in Scandinavian designs like Cos, Samsoe Samsoe, &Other Stories, Weekday and Filippa K. And those clothes I like to combine with clothes from Zara. I wear a lot of dark colors, even in the summer.
KATHY, LONDON Kathy (24): “My style is very colorful, a bit quirky and nostalgic, I would say. I always wear color, all the time and all day long. And always a rainbow. I get my inspiration from the different era’s like the sixties, seventies and nineties and different blogs”
ALVARO, MADRID ALVARO SANCHEZ (24): “THE POINT IS TO LOOK like YOU don’t CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU WEAR. EVEN WHEN YOU SPEND HOURS IN FRONT OF THE MIRROR. I LOVE FASHION. I LOVE BEING GOOD LOOKING. AND I LOVE COMPLIMENTS. AND BECAUSE OF THIS, I CARE ABOUT WHAT I WEAR, ALTHOUGH IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE it. HAHA”
ANA, MADRID ANA LORCA (25): “FASHION IS MY LIFE. NOT ONLY BECAUSE I LOVE IT BUT BECAUSE IT’S MY WORK. I STARTED AS A MODEL BUT NOW I’M JUST INTO BLOGS. I LOVE MY LIFE, BECAUSE I LOVE FASHION.”
