- Letter from the Governor, Clean Energy Wisconsin

{ BACKGROUND } The Wisconsin Bioenergy Initiative was created in 2007 by the University of WisconsinMadison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. The WBI is a university-based coalition seeking to cultivate bioenergy expertise among UW-Madison, UW-System and Wisconsin stakeholders to create, commercialize and promote biobased solutions. Each year, the WBI sponsors the Wisconsin Bioenergy Summit, a conference focused on sharing the importance of building a biobased economy and educating the public on bioenergy research and industry development. Although Wisconsin has taken strides in advancing the bioenergy industry, many challenges still lie ahead. The Summit was programmed to give Madison and the surrounding communities a better understanding of our state’s role in addressing the energy challenge that lies before us.

{ MISSION } For hundreds of years, we have built societies and economies on fossil fuels without planning for the day when traditional energies run out. As we look forward to a renewable energy future, we are beginning to appreciate the vast stores of energy in the grasses, corncobs and woody plants all around us. Even waste materials - in landfills, on farms or leftover from forestry - hold valuable energy potential. As we come to grips with the limitations of finite fuels, we are beginning to realize the endless possibilities of bioenergy. The WBI strives to realize those possibilities by providing access to new knowledge and technologies, preparing bioenergy industry leaders through education and outreach, and facilitating research and transfer technology to grow bioenergy industries.

{ ACHIEVEMENTS } By late 2013, the Charter Street Heating Plant in Madison plans to switch from burning coal to burning a mixture of biomass. With the help of a proposal from Governor Jim Doyle, the project is supported by the Wisconsin Bioenergy Initiative and is intended to provide the necessary upgrades, improve environmental performance of the plant and initiate the development of a biomass market for bioenergy. The WBI has joined the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Land Information and Computer Graphics Facility, UW-Extension and the Energy Center of Wisconsin to create the Bioenergy Information and Outreach Network (BION), a collaborative online portal that will aid researchers, businesses, entrepreneurs, and policy makers in connecting to the information and technologies they need to develop and grow the bioenergy industry in Wisconsin.

{ EVENT DETAILS } Presenters and panelists Each year, we strive to bring prominent speakers and presenters to the Summit. Our featured speakers are at the top of their fields and extremely vested in renewable energy. Former speakers include Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle, Virent Energy Systems CEO Lee Edwards, and Environmental Defense Fund President and bestselling auther Fred Krupp. This year’s Summit features Doug Cameron, founder and managing director of Alberti Advisors, a venture advisory firm specializing in clean technology and sustainable agriculture. Greg Hartgraves, senior director of research at POET, will close the conference with a keynote address.

Interactive sessions PANEL SESSIONS Our panel sessions include speakers and moderators who represent the depth and breadth of expertise in renewable energy. From laboratory researchers to policy representatives and private business members, our experts will share their knowledge and experiences on a variety of topics. Panel sessions are designed to allow interaction and discussion with conference attendees. Each session features 3-4 speakers who present industry insights and updates on cutting-edge research, providing a cross-section of the topics discussed. After short presentations, the audience will engage in the conversation, asking questions and creating discussions amongst the presenters and themselves. WORKSHOPS New to the Summit lineup this year, the biomass contracting and student roundtable workshops are designed to provide tailored information and educational opportunities around specific areas of interest. The biomass contracting workshop will address themes around biomass contracting, pricing, delivery and supplier/ customer relationships. The student roundtable will feature moderated, small-group discussions around renewable energy.

Networking In addition to the breadth of topics featured in panel session and workshops, the Summit offers a unique opportunity to network with a variety of stakeholders interested in renewable energy. Throughout the scheduled breakfast, lunch and evening reception, attendees will interact with industry professionals, researchers, policymakers and students. Summit speakers and sponsors attend our event to meet like-minded people and form new relationships in the growing field of bioenergy. Students will have the opportunity to interact with professors, peers and potential employers.
