CITY LIGHTS PARADE & HOLIDAY FESTIVAL

The City Lights Festival is an event grand enough to capture the spirit of the holidays. Many families in Wichita Falls look forward to the annual tradition as an official kick off to the holiday season. Last year’s theme was “A Wonka Christmas!” What will it be this year? This family-friendly event features activities for guests of all ages. There is much to do and experience, like pictures or a snowball fight in Santa Land at Park Central, live music, roasted corn, kettle corn, and hot chocolate! The s’more station is a great way to enjoy the gooey marshmallow, Hershey’s chocolate bar perfection, and for people to stay warm by the fire.

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

While there is a great deal to love about summer, I cherish when the first crisp fall breeze blows through town with promises of harvest, pumpkins, and much needed rain. This cooler weather has me thinking about traditions. Living in Wichita Falls has made it easy to keep up with old traditions as well as start new ones, and some of my favorite traditions just happen to coincide with the cooler months.

One of my favorite yearly traditions is the first pumpkin spice latte of the year with my youngest daughter. Just holding the cup in my hand and breathing in the indulgent spice is like breathing in a warm hug. With all the great local choices for a caffeine pick-me-up, it will be the first of many that I treat myself to this season.

Meanwhile, my oldest daughter shares my love of art and soup, and you wouldn’t think those two interests would intersect; however, annually, we attend Empty Bowls, an event where local artisans, restaurants, and community members come together to raise money for the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank.

Fall brings so many fun opportunities for families to get together for festive fun and seasonal snaps. The Morath Corn Maze is always a crowd pleaser. Six and a half acres to explore under the gorgeous Texas sky. My family is particularly excited as this year Morath has cultivated its own field of dreams with a baseball themed maze.

The season brings many urban retreats as well as downtown continues to be the destination for breathtaking entertainment with two not-to-be-missed festivals during fall and winter. Los Muertos spends a month celebrating with special workshops and events before the downtown festival on October 28th. The celebration of life is in its sixth year with every year becoming more spectacular. I love the pageantry of the event, delightfully taking in all of the sights including the costumes, dancers, fire breathers, and larger-than-life decorations.

Not too long after Los Muertos, Christmas is on the horizon. The City Lights Holiday Festival is a wonderland of family fun. Every year, I eagerly await the announcement of the theme for the event. I have a weakness for a well-executed theme, the bigger the better, and the City Lights Holiday Festival always features extravagant and fantastical creations. Last year, Downtown Development immersed us in a confection explosion for a Very Wonka Christmas. Perhaps my favorite part of the festival is how the downtown businesses come together to each offer their own themed beverages and treats for the celebration.

Those who know me best, know that I relish in all things fall and winter, unapologetically, which is just one of the reasons that I am brimming with excitement to share this issue of the Fall/Winter Wichita Falls’ Visitor Guide with all of you. Furthermore, I hope when you browse this guide, you find a new tradition or two to add to your calendar.

Kiwanis Park is home to four ball fields, two bathrooms, a large covered pavilion with 12 tables, and four picnic shelters.

The park has two playgrounds designated by age group. The 2 to 5 year old area features a Hedra Scout central play structure, an Omni Spin, toggle riders, cozy dome, and a ZipKruz. It is located next to the 5 to 12 year old area so parents can monitor children in both play areas. It has a kite flying areas, and is the home to the Wichita Falls Prairie Dog town.

This 20-acre environmental education facility connects people to the natural environment of Texas. Discover the rolling plains while exploring the Bryant Edwards Learning Center and the River Bottom Forest Trail. One of the most popular exhibits, the Ruby N. Priddy Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is a 7,000 sq. ft. glass building with native butterflies, ponds, native flowers, and live animals that roam throughout the facility.

There are many ways to explore the Rolling Plains at RBNC. Walk the trails and gardens, picnic under the open-air pavilion, participate in a scavenger hunt, or check out nature detective bags from the Nature Gift Shop. Explore hands-on activities and get up close and personal with live animals and insects in their Learning Center, or dig up dino bones in the United Children’s Garden!

RBNC holds several special activities throughout the year! These include camps, live animal shows, Thursday Nature Programs, Sip n’ Science, Dallas Zoo Animal Adventure, Nature Preschool, Science Saturdays, and more!

Lucy Park is a 178-acre regional park located in the center of the city. The park is in a bend of the Wichita River which gives it a natural setting with huge pecans, cottonwoods, and numerous other species of native and introduced trees.

For hiking and biking enthusiasts, there is a 1.7 mile concrete trail that circles the park. This is the west starting point for the city-wide Circle Trail System and passes right by ‘The Falls’.

In addition to three modular playgrounds and picnic areas, the park has two public restrooms, basketball goals, one concrete volleyball court, and an 18 hole disc golf course.

The most expansive trail in town is the impressive Circle Trail, which currently stretches over 20 miles. This trail weaves throughout the city of Wichita Falls in multiple sections: the Wichita River section, the Holiday Creek section, the Seymour Highway section, the Barnett Road section, and the Wichita Bluff section. These wide concrete pathways offer scenic views of the city’s lakes, rivers, trees, and wildlife. There are also covered shelters, picnic areas, and benches along the way for travelers to stop at and have a rest. In addition, several handy bike repair/ tire pump stations are located along the trail for bicycle maintenance.

The Circle Trail is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists year round, but motor vehicles are strictly prohibited. The trail is available any day, so get out and explore Wichita Falls.

LAKE WICHITA PARK

Lake Wichita Park is a large 234 acre park located on the north shore of Lake Wichita. Within the park itself is a 2.6 mile concrete hike and bike trail that runs from the southern tip of the park at Fairway Avenue to the dam on the lake. The trail continues northward all the way to Lucy Park. There are public restrooms, a modular playground, basketball goals, drinking fountains, and many picnic areas.

The park has a large reservable picnic shelter with 10 picnic tables that will seat approximately 60 people. There are also 2 lighted baseball fields, 2 lighted softball fields, 3 lighted football fields, and an 18 hole disc golf course. Lake Wichita Park has the only model airplane landing strip in the park system. The park is also the location of the Off-Leash Dog Park.

The Depot Axe Throwing Lounge made its debut in January of 2022, and since then people have been coming out to try their luck. All you have to do is throw your axe at a target on the wall. Seems easy, right?

However, this is no ordinary axe throwing lounge. The Depot’s fourteen axe throwing lanes are furnished with projectors that cast striking images onto the wooden target area. Guests can throw their axes at a selection of 20-30 images.

If guests want to take a break from throwing, there is still plenty to do. The Depot also offers alternatives like pool, shuffleboard, darts, and cornhole. But what is Los Muertos? “Los Muertos: A Celebration of Life” is an event of Hispanic culture. The holiday originated in Mexico, but it’s celebrated throughout Latin America. It is not just sugar skulls and face painting, but a day to remember and

honor lost loved ones; a day to celebrate the wonderful lives we all live.

The celebrated spirits are welcomed back to the land of the living once a year, where the festivities are both joyous and solemn, and the colors are always vibrant. You can leave an offering at the elaborately-adorned altars of loved ones, and watch as the altars are blessed by Aztec dancers and serenaded by mariachi. Altars or offerings are placed to commemorate loved ones with their favorite things, and decorations which include cempasúchil flowers (marigolds), paper cut-outs, candles, salt, water, chocolate, sugar skulls, pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and the favorite foods and liquor of the deceased.

In Downtown Wichita Falls, between Ohio and Indiana on 7th Street, sits the J. F. Keller building in the Depot Square Historic District. It was built in 1886, the early days of Wichita Falls, when the city saw a sudden influx of pioneers searching for oil. The city was just incorporated in 1882 and became the county seat when the Union Square Passenger Depot was built, creating Wichita Falls as the center point for commerce and transporation in the early 20th century.

J.F. Keller and H. M. Durrett, the first owners, ran a saddle, harness and hardware business in conjunction with the building next door, 615 7th Street.

The two story red, brick Victorian has portions of the original cast iron store front still existing today. The upstairs windows and downstairs display windows were replaced and altered for stabilization. Over

the years the ornate facade was removed but the intricate brick work, sign band, and stone sills remain.

The oldest two story brick building in Wichita Falls that holds so much of our community’s early history and has sat vacant for decades.

In 2022, Downtown Wichita Falls Development took action. The Board of Directors chose to purchase the building and do historical restoration to not only save the building from its impeding demise but be able to add another property to the revitalization of downtown Wichita Falls.

It is no easy task, the building needs extensive work. The first steps will be shoring the building, adding a new roof, and improving the facade.

As of August 2023, DWFD has been working with Post Oak Preservation Solutions out of Austin, Texas to make sure the historical restoration will be accurate.

Brick by brick and block by block, our downtown sees revitalization and a new life for future generations to enjoy the heart of our city.

WEE-CHI-TAH SCULPTURE

This life-size bronze sculpture by artist Jack Stevens is of a Comanche woman, her child, and two braves on horseback. Set in the natural beauty of rock & flowing water near the site of the original waterfalls.

When visiting Wichita Falls, a stop at the Wee-Chi-Tah sculpture is a must. It offers a moment to appreciate the artistry, history, and the profound significance it brings to the community.

The sculpture’s presence contributes to the cultural identity of the community, honoring the history and contributions of Native American peoples.

The Kell House Heritage Center is a step back in time to the early 20th century. Built in 1909, the Kell House was the home of Frank Kell and his family for seventy years.

The Wichita County Heritage Society purchased the property and converted it into a museum that opened to the public in 1981. The Museum harkens back to the romance of the Victorian Era, with period rooms and family treasures. It features original family furnishings, textiles, decorative art, and historic clothing.

Tour the home of this pioneer businessman to learn the history of Wichita Falls through the eyes of the man who helped shape its present and future. Tours of this local, state, and national landmark include stories of the Kell family, the city that grew around them, and their contributions to the community and nation.

The museum is also the venue to community events and host to weddings, rehearsal dinners, anniversary parties, showers, meetings, and other special occasions.

Suga B’s restaurant is a new addition to the airport and promises to serve up some good eats to hungry travelers. The menu has a little bit of everything, from their signature honey-themed dishes, to southern cuisine, to Creole and Mexican food. Owner and head chef Brandy Belk is also a pastry chef, so Suga B‘s is sure to have something to satisfy your sweet tooth! Flyers can grab a quick cup of coffee and breakfast snack early in the morning, or just sit and stay a while.

Also located inside the airport is the Jenny to Jet Exhibit. This one-of-a-kind display with the very first U.S. military training plane and a modern, current training jet shows the world Wichita Falls’ unique history and proud commitment to our Armed Forces.
