There are lots of funny Christmas songs out there. One such song is “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth.” Donald Yetter Gardner wrote the song in 1944 while teaching music to schoolchildren in Smithtown, NY. With Christmas just around the corner, Gardner asked his young students what they wanted that year. As they answered, Gardner noticed that almost all of them had lost one, if not both, of their front teeth. Inspired, Gardner wrote “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth” in about half an hour. Spike Jones and the City Slickers recorded the song, and it was an instant hit, climbing to the top of the music charts. Since then, the song has become a Christmas favorite that has been recorded by many others including Alvin and the Chipmunks.

The “Bed and Breakfast” of Assisted Living A neighborhood within a neighborhood

ucked away in a quiet northeast neighborhood, Via Christi Villages at Broadmoor proves to be one of Wichita’s best kept secrets in assisted living. Joanne Rogers, administrator of the senior residences on North Broadmoor, just began her eighth year at the small community. “I love working with elders,” said Joanne. “You know when you walk in our building that this is home. “ Nestled within a community of mature trees and beautiful homes, Via Christi Village on Broadmoor is home to several fascinating people with the oldest resident being 101 years of age. There are 37 studio apartments available that can accommodate up to 40 occupants. The facility has been to

individuals, home couples, siblings, and even encourages residents to bring their small pets to keep them company. The stories of the people who reside here are eclectic and exciting. From dating to sharing fun stories, these residents certainly make Via Christi Village their home. Joanne described the care here as, “family care, not just resident care.”

Eula was born in Oxford, Ks. and worked as a presser, a seamstress, and even taught a sign language class at one time. The staff at Broadmoor assists in finding transportation to and from a deaf club on Thursday evenings that gives Eula the chance to stay involved with the deaf community.

Via Christi holds frequent resident council meetings where the residents come together with the staff to discuss anything that may be on their mind. “They ask for input on food . . . what we like,” said Ruth. “If we want input, we just say so.” When asked about
her experience, Ruth spoke of the good location and the wonderful attitude of the staff. “Everything is about as near perfect as it could be,” she said. for the Boeing company. “Everybody is so nice to us, and take care of our needs and wants. Everyone seems so willing to do what they are doing,” Phillis said. Via Christi has an activities director on staff who truly keeps the residents moving while having fun. “I love the activities,” Phillis said. Her favorite outing is to visit the antique mall. “It’s fun to get out and see different things,” she said. When speaking of Via Christi Village on Broadmoor, Phillis said, “It’s a loving atmosphere. There is no bickering among help. If I have to be in such a place like this, I can’t think of any place else I’d rather be.”

Assisted Living (NCAL), 70% of residents come to assisted living facilities from a private home or apartment. It is important for these residents to have the opportunity to live as independently as possible. According to the NCAL, “On average, assisted living residents need help with 1.6 of their normal activities of daily living.” These activities could include bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring and eating. Eighty-seven percent of assisted living residents need help with meal preparation, while 81 percent need help simply managing their medications. District collects thousands for Turkey Drive
Students from Southeast High School help unload a military truck carrying turkeys that were donated by their school.
Thank you for all who helped support the United Methodist Open Door Turkey Drive on November 16. The Wichita Public School’s Alvin E. Morris Administrative Center served as the drop off location for the schools, district offices and for downtown Wichita. This year, 3,000 turkeys were collected, along with more than $11,000 in monetary donations, and more than 6,100 side items and canned goods.
“Our students again stepped up to help others,” said Superintendent John Allison. “We are proud of their dedication to helping others and to get involved in our community. This is always one of my most favorite events of the school year.” This is the seventh year the Wichita Public Schools has participated in the Turkey Drive.
McLean kicks off year-long ACE science program Students at McLean Science and Technology Magnet kicked off the beginning of a year-long science initiative sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol. ACE, which stands for Aerospace Connections in Education, have lessons that will focus on aerospace, science, technology, engineering, math, physical fitness
and character. The students kicked off the beginning of the ACE program by folding and flying paper airplanes, seeing which ones flew the farthest. Every student received a t-shirt provided by the Civil Air Patrol that they will wear during each lesson.
