a note from the publishers

I know that November is typically the month for giving thanks, but I would be remise if I didn’t take some time to say a sincere and grateful “thank you” to Jessica Lindsey, our former editor. Jessica had been with us since Christy and I began publishing Wichita Family Magazine more than five years ago. In the past five years Jessica served as a contributing writer, Distribution Manager, accounts executive and most recently, Editor, but her dedication to WF and you, the reader, could never be summed up in title or a “publisher’s note,” for that matter. Publishing a monthly magazine dedicated to family values and ideals takes a team of individuals who share the same vision. My family and the families that we publish for each month, may never understand the time, effort and joy that Jessica possessed while in her various roles for WF. She challenged us daily and has helped lay a strong foundation for what WF will be doing in the future--for that, we say “thank-you,” and we encourage you, the reader, to do the same. In July, Cari Fischer, our newly appointed Editor, will take over the steering wheel of this vessel. Cari comes to us with several years of experience in the Journalism, Marketing and Advertising realm, but more importantly, she brings a unique perspective on the community of Wichita and how it relates to family. As she traverses through this new role, Cari will also continue to serve as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for us. Needless to say, she’ll be busy! Christy and I have always wanted this publication to become a solid resource for families in Wichita and the surrounding area. We’re certainly still a “work in progress,” but we’re proud of the work that we have done over the past couple of years. But we wouldn’t be where we are today without surrounding our family vision with quality businesses and organizations. Camp Discovery gives kids with diabetes

‘Sugar-Free Summer’ and their families a chance for a camp experience With summer camps just around the corner, parents across the country will be preparing their children for the insand-outs of going to camp. Parents will be packing the necessary camping items, such as a back pack, a flashlight, bug spray and a host of other items, and encouraging them through the often troublesome event of being away from home.

While the greatest dilemma most kids face, is that of homesickness, kids like 17-year-old Corey Evenson, face lifethreatening issues when heading off to camp. “At one [camp], I accidentally took the wrong insulin and no one knew what to do,” she said. Evenson has been a diabetic since she was nine. While going to camp is a summer activity that she enjoys, she admits that the risk often outweighed her desire to participate because few people are educated enough about it to make the camp experience as safe as possible –until now.

The Solution

For Evenson and other diabetic children, there was another choice. Camp Discovery was founded nearly 40 years ago by Drs. Richard and Diana Guthrie of Mid-Kansas Diabetes associates (MKDA), along with the help of Max Johnston, and other parents of children with diabetes. For a week, campers have the opportunity to ride horses, go canoeing, fishing, hiking, swimming and camping in cabins by the lake. “The doctors believed it was important for children with diabetes to have an opportunity to know that they could do anything that any other child could do,” APRN Lindy Childs said. Lindy, who works for the doctors, has attended all but two years of camp since 1980. While the camp sounds very cliché, it boasts a staff of doctors, nurses and other staff members who accompany the campers throughout the week, who help provide a safe environment for it’s diabetic residence. “Most of the counselors and many of the medical team have diabetes themselves,” Childs said. “Camp is 8 | Wichita Family

an opportunity to see older youth and young adults modeling good diabetes care. “Drs. Richard and Diana have always supported their staff in attending Camp Discovery because they saw this as an opportunity to learn from the children with diabetes and allows their staff an opportunity to better understand the rigors of living with diabetes in a small way.” The practice even provides paid time off for all those staff members who attend. The camp is not only an educational outlet for the staff of MKDA, but also for the children who attend. The campers are taught important skills such as counting carbs, how to manage diabetes in normal day life, and selfinjection. “It's where I learned to take shots in my arm . . . I didn't feel like an outcast,” Evenson said. During the camp, kids have the opportunity to function as any other kid might at camp with little to no anxiety about eating the wrong foods or taking the wrong medication, which is comforting to parents whose children attend the camp.

When parents of children with a disease like diabetes think about sending their child to camp, anxiety can take over. What if they get hurt? What if they forget to take their insulin? What if I can't get to them in time? Camp Discovery allows parents to take a short break from the rigors of caring for a child with diabetes. For that one week, their child is in capable hands and in one of the safest place possible according to Dr. Richard Guthrie, who jokes that he has “never lost a child [at the camp], but almost some parents.”

The Camp

Rock Springs was chosen to host Camp Discovery in 1979. Mike Spohn, Operations Manager for the camp, said the camp has been possible because of “the amazing partnership we have together.” Rock Springs 4-H Center is a nonprofit camp that receives no state funding, and runs solely off of donations. Rock Springs 4-H center was first built in 1927 as a Lutheran church camp. In the years since, the camp has become

a retreat for not only church camps, but also specialty camps like Camp Discovery, and they even offer “family camps.” “Family Camp is like a camp 'dry-run' for some kids. It gives both the kids and the parents a chance to check out the camp, and therefore making them more comfortable coming on their own next time,” Spohn said. “We’re looking forward to making a lot of improvements in the coming years,” Spohn said. Camp Wa Shun Ga, the camp area where Camp Discovery is held, has recently added a new pavilion.

The Need for Support “Camp Discovery is run completely on donations from our supporters,” RaeAnn Moreno, manager of the American Diabetes Association said. “We try and offer as many scholarships as we can, so every child gets the chance to go to camp.” According to the ADA, enrollment at the camp has been dwindling. During economic hard times, specialty camps such as Camp Discovery tend to struggle to with financial support. Currently, the camp runs two sessions: the first for 3rd through 6th graders, and the second session for junior high/early high school-age children. Next summer, in an effort to curb some financial obstacles, the camp is likely to combine the two sessions in an effort to save money. With the dedication from the MidKansas Diabetes Associates, the American Diabetes Association, and Rock Springs 4-H center, this camp can continue to change the lives of many children suffering from diabetes.

From the District Thirty-one schools participate in Bike to School Day Thirty-one elementary schools participated in Bike to School Day on May 9. Bike to School Day, sponsored by the Safe Kids Wichita Area Coalition, Wichita Health and Wellness Coalition, Via Christi Outreach and Prevention and Easton-Bell Sports, Inc., teaches the importance of safe bicycling to school and the rules of the road.

Northwest DECA students win first place at international competition Northwest DECA students Alex Wespi, Taryn Thomas and Broc Cramer were awarded first place in the Public Relations Project event at the International DECA Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 1. The three member team put together a 30-page project and presentation on internet safety titled, “Wonder Who’s Watching.â€? The campaign teaches elementary students about the dangers of posting information online, telling students that phone numbers, addresses and pictures aren’t necessarily private and can be dangerous when used incorrectly on the internet. They also teach that what students post online is there forever. The campaign included radio and television commercials, billboards, school presentations, social media, tip cards and radio and television interviews. Their campaign had a reach of over 9,000,000 exposures in the Wichita area market and it included a radio commercial by John Walsh, host of the show America’s Most Wanted. The team competed against the top teams from every state in the U.S. along with Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgian Islands, Dominican Repulic, Spain, Italy, Germany, Mexico and China. 10 | Wichita Family

At Anderson Elementary, students who rode their bike to school received a free bike helmet and bike reflectors. Volunteers fitted each of the 55 students to make sure their helmet was the proper fit. They reminded the students that they always need to wear their helmet while riding their bike.
