appy October! My favorite month of the year is here. The weather finally starts to cool down and I get to break out my favorite piece of clothing . . . my hoodie!! This month also hosts my favorite holiday, Halloween. Getting the kids all decked out in their costumes, dressing the dog in something ridiculous, stealing candy from my kids . . . did I say that out loud? Come on, you all know you do it. I am so excited about this months issue because it features a pumpkin patch from the county I grew up in, and I also got to feature a “Daddypreneur!” I came across this amazingly talented guy while attending a local concert. Sometimes the guitar player is more than just a rock star. As always, keep an eye out on our Facebook page. This month we will have two givea-ways! When you think of a firehouse, the one animal that may come to mind is the spotted Dalmatian. Dalmatians used to serve as carriage dogs for firehouses back when horses pulled fire engines. When a fire occurred, the Dalmatians would run in front of the horses, clearing the way and guiding the horses to the fire. Dalmatians also helped find victims in burning buildings and guarded firehouses. They would keep thieves from stealing firefighting equipment and horses. Although firehouses today no longer have horses, some still have Dalmatians as pets. The Dalmatian remains a symbol of the firehouse.

hough he spends most weekend night's rockin’ out with his band mates, Bruce Despommier isn't your typical “rock star.” Despommier is a loving father of three children, an active member in his church, a local air traffic controller and now . . . an author.
Every since Despommier began taking guitar lessons at age 8, he knew he wanted to be a rock star! Every kids' dream, right? However, simply growing up doesn't always give you the knowledge or the means to do so. After leaving New Jersey, where he spent most of his childhood, Despommier spent the next few years attending college at the University of Massachusetts, after which he returned to New Jersey to train as a professional tennis coach. Despommier moved to Wichita for good in 2000, where he has since worked as an air traffic controller at Wichita's MidContinent Airport. Sounds like a busy life, doesn't it? Well, it wasn't enough for Bruce. Despommier was looking for a way to relax on the weekends, while making some extra spending money. His solution...start a rock band. Despommier currently tours with the band, GeTBaD. The band successfully plays throughout the Midwest delivering highenergy shows that frequently fill clubs. 6 | Wichita Family
During his shows people would often ask him questions about his equipment, how he gets the sound he does, or how they could start their own band? He spent some time searching online for books or tutorials about how to start a rock band and came up empty. “There’s nothing that tells you how to go from playing Guitar Hero to having an actual band,” said Despommier. That's when the idea for his book came to fruition. From amateurs just starting out, to those looking to start their own band, “Let's Get Rockin’” is a step-by-step how-to guide for all musical talent ranges. From information on how to set up a practice band, to trouble-shooting those pesky hums, this book is all you need to get started. oing to the pumpkin patch as a child, I can remember taking a hay ride out into the field, picking my own pumpkin, and maybe getting a nice cup of hot cocoa at the end. Walter's Pumpkin Patch is so much more. Carroll and Becky Walters have been growing pumpkins since the early 80's and have grown their business little by little every year. Their pumpkin patch now spreads over more than 73 acres of their 1700 acre farm. Don't think for a moment however that this is a hobby that they get to do 6 weeks out of the year. The Walter's prepare year-round for this haunting event!

From early planting, tilling, and weeding, the Walter's spend their year growing the pumpkins that will be the center of attention the following fall. Becky spends her year also cutting charming faces to giant gourds, and preparing other decorative items that she will sell in their gift shop. From “Punkin Chunkin” to mining for interesting fossils in the Walter's mine, to jumping on GIANT pillows or flying down the zip-line, families can spend most of a day here. AVID elementary teachers show their college pride AVID teachers at Beech, Cessna, Clark, Dodge, Franklin, OK, Park and Stanley showed their college pride by wearing shirts from where they got their degree. At OK Elementary, students were also encouraged to wear college shirts if they had them. The teachers’ goal was to support AVID’s theme of collegereadiness and to have students ask about the college they attended. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program designed to encourage students to go to college who traditionally may not see college as a possibility. At the elementary level, 4th and 5th grade students are taught organizational skills, note taking skills and study skills to create a foundation to help them be successful as they go on to middle and high school.

Eleven students named National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists
Linwood Elementary students get fitted for brand new shoes supplied by First Church of the Nazarene.
Students at Linwood Elementary were able to start the new year with new shoes, thanks members of the First Church of the Nazarene. Members handed out shoes to students on August 19. The shoes were purchased or donated by church members and the community. More than 120 students received shoes. The church also gave out 290 pairs of shoes to students over the summer. First Church of the Nazarene hopes to continue with the shoe donation for Linwood and possibly expand to other schools as well.
The 2012 National Merit Semi-Finalists from East High School are: Emily Jensen, Edward Li, Hari Ramanan, Miranda Rose, Lauren Sinik, Aubrey Smading, Varsha Tirukonda, Dina Vu and Frank Zhong. Emma Wingert is the semi-finalist from Northwest High School and David Strum is the semi-finalist from South High School. Students become National Merit semifinalists by scoring in the top one-half of one percent on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
