REFLECTING ON RIVERFEST 2018 By Admiral Windwagon Smith XLV Tim Norton

Wagonmaster, Haysvillian, Targeteer and County Commissioner, sold tickets at the food court, built a float in my garage, and on and on. I loved the River Festival and what it represented. Things changed this year. I got a whole new view of this ultimate party on the River. And a whole new perspective and appreciation of what it takes to put on nine days of food, fun and family. Putting on the red coat and Admiral’s hat gave me a unique glimpse into the personality and soul of the community that I have loved since 1980. Getting piped aboard the Windwagon during the NCAA tournament at INTRUST Bank Arena and being delivered to the event in a Sedgwick
I am thankful for the Riverfest staff, the countless volunteers, the civic groups and sponsors that make the events and activities look effortless and seamless. Their love of the community manifests itself in hard work, long hours, and dedication to putting on a great party. And finally I am forever indebted to the throngs of festival goers that were so kind, welcoming and respectful to me in my role as Admiral. It takes both planners and participants to make the nine days a success. I have been blessed with a great life. Loving and supportive wife and family.

Thanks to the generosity of 25 donors we were able to give away more than 2,100 buttons through the Celebrations for a Cause program this year. Leading the charge were Ron Ryan and Safelite AutoGlass®. The Celebrations for a Cause program makes it possible for worthy citizens to attend Riverfest who may not otherwise have the chance. Generous business and individual donors purchase buttons allowing service organizations to share the fun of Riverfest with families they serve. In 2018, many great organizations received buttons through the CFC program: • Youth Horizons Inc.
The Wichita Festivals’ board of directors and staff are happy to welcome Ty Stork to our team as Director of Event Operations.
• Mental Health Association • It Takes A Village, Inc. • Breakthrough Club • Survivor Outreach Services – Long Term Casualty Support for Families of Military Fallen • Wichita’s Littlest Heroes • Empire Performing Arts Center • Kansas Army National Guard • Urban League of Kansas • Academy of Excellence • Visit Wichita • First United Methodist Church • Progressive Missionary Baptist Church • Starkey • KVC Health Systems, Wichita office • Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters • Ronald McDonald House Charities Wichita • Laughing Feet Performers • Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas • Goodwill Industries of Kansas • Wichita Children’s Home
A native of Hutchinson, Ty started putting his strong mechanical and organizational abilities to work for us this week. Ten years in food service, ten years in construction and commercial glass, and four and a half years with PrairieFire Coffee Roasters added up to the perfect skillset, along with experience on the Riverfest Operations team working concerts and signage. A proud dad of three – he and wife, Amber, have two daughters, Abigail and Charlee, and a son, Braedyn. Ty enjoys time with his family, playing guitar, and hiking in the Smoky Mountains. He is a fan of the Atlanta Braves, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Jayhawks. “I accept this challenge with nervous excitement knowing the large shoes my predecessor has left me to fill,” Ty said. “I look forward to working with this great team and appreciate the support I have been given by all of my peers!” You’re going to do great, Ty, and we are delighted you are joining us.

RIVERFEST CORPORATE HOSTS The Riverfest Corporate Host sponsorship program was started as a way to involve the many companies who enjoy the cultural and natural assets of our city and want to join the fun of Riverfest. This year Riverfest Corporate Hosts presented the Twilight Pops Concert on opening night that featured the Wichita Symphony and was a great kick-off to Riverfest. Each year the Riverfest Corporate Hosts make possible a highprofile event in the Riverfest schedule, and receive special VIP hospitality experiences and Riverfest buttons to share with their staff. The Riverfest Corporate Host sponsorship package is available for $1,500.

RIVERFEST VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT By Jill Massey, Director of Volunteers
the new Schoonies each year, but they become confidants, healers, referees, encouragers, counselors, friends, but most importantly, family.
Meet Rachel Embray and Jayden Massey! These two young ladies volunteer more than 450 hours every year. They start in October to recruit for our Prairie Schooner Mate program. After presentations and recruitments are done and “Schoonies,” (our nickname for the Youth Ambassadors) are chosen, these two go into full Schoonie Mentor mode. They help collect paperwork and plan meet and greets, the photo shoot and parent orientation. As mentors they provide 24/7 guidance to these young people, answering questions about processes and other details, and teaching them how to properly present themselves as Prairie Schooner Mates. From March through May, Jayden and Rachel help organize our Civic Days, Parade Day and Team Building Day. On Civic Days we bring the Riverfest spirit to groups in the community like Wichita Children’s Home, Starkey, Envision and local hospitals just to name a few. They find out what the organization needs are and work with the Schoonies to get those items donated. They take time off of work and school to attend Civic Days with us. During Riverfest Jayden and Rachel work from 7 a.m. until nearly 1 a.m. each day. Jayden & Rachel are not only mentors to
Others worked with Jayden, Rachel and the Schoonie team this year, including Schoonie of the Year, Claire Goenner, and past Schoonies: Kensey Arlt, Ivan Castillo, Paige Wade, Kaity Cooper, Vanessa Osorio, Azhai Williams, Bethany Warner, Katie Beth Bakel, and Caleb Soliday. You will hear, “Schoonies 4 Life!,” as Schoonies learn from their mentors from the start that we are always family. I am honored that more than 300 past Schoonies come by Riverfest to say hello each year. They bring their new spouses and babies, and talk about their careers and adventures. Most importantly they come by to remind me, “Schoonies 4 Life!” What a gift I am given to be a witness to volunteers like Rachel and Jayden and all of our Prairie Schooner Mates. I could not do my job without them.

BRINGING FINE ART, FOOD & FUN TOGETHER
FEATURED ARTIST Chris McCarthy, a glass blower from St. Louis, Mo., is the Grant Thornton LLP Featured Artist for Autumn & Art at Bradley Fair 2018. McCarthy’s work is Venetian-inspired, with a concentration of murrini-based designs and a mix of cold-working techniques. After a piece has been blown and cooled back to room temperature, he sand-carves or wheel-carves it to give each its own unique design and texture.
What’s your favorite way to spend a lovely fall day? Outside in nature? Relaxing with good food and a glass of wine? Enjoying live music? Browsing and shopping? Having fun with the kids? At Autumn & Art at Bradley Fair you can do it all! Shop for artwork and enjoy artinspired activities lakeside on beautiful Bradley Fair Parkway, just east and south of Bradley Fair at Rock Road and 21st Street. The event takes place 6-9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 15; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 16. This alfresco fine-art fair, presented by Fidelity Bank, will feature 100 artists from 20 states, including 29 Kansas artists. Original works will be available in 14

artistic media: jewelry, painting, glass, fiber, ceramics, photography, woodwork and more. Artists were invited to sell their work at the show after evaluation by a panel of expert jurors. They compete for cash awards totaling $7,500. To sustain you on your art adventures, a selection of delicious food from Bradley Fair restaurants will be available on Saturday and Sunday. Wine, beer and soft drinks can be purchased to enjoy as you stroll the parkway and shop for the latest addition to your art collection. “The Art of Bloody Marys” will give attendees the chance to create a savory masterpiece at a build-your-own bar from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday. (Continued on page 13)
Born in Nashville, Tenn., and raised in Paducah, Ky., McCarthy was introduced to the art of glass blowing while at Washington University in St. Louis. His fascination with fire and desire to create objects by hand drove him to embrace glass blowing as his passion and profession for the past 20 years. The artist and his wife, jeweler Stefany Brown (who is also showing at Autumn & Art at Bradley Fair this year), have a daughter, Ella, and two dogs, Rocky and Momo. He enjoys ice hockey and growing heirloom tomatoes, pumpkins and peppers. A signed and numbered poster of McCarthy’s Featured Artwork, “Red Vase,” is available for purchase at The Frame Shop in Bradley Fair and will also be sold at Autumn & Art Welcome Centers during the event.
(Continued) Live entertainment, including a variety of music, dance, theater, and art demonstrations, will be presented throughout the weekend.
