Affixed to the countertop and framed in, all he had to do is add a little grout and Sarah had her granite countertops. “The way we did it cost about half,” Mike Cherry said. Much of that savings, however, came in through Mike’s labor, putting sweatequity into their property. The kitchen also got an upgrade on appliances, which led to the Cherrys needing to have their home rewired. After five decades, codes and usage certainly have changed. “We use so much more electronics,” Mike said. Mike’s background in construction

Oftentimes one project led to another. Floors were ripped up and floor joists replaced. New wood floors were put down throughout the house. Then there was the bathroom. The all-pink room, including lavatory, toilet and tub, simply had to go. “When I say pink, it was pink,” Mike said. Much of the updates and improvements meant trips to hardware stores and watching hours of HGTV.

YDIA — The two-bedroom home of Mike and Sarah Cherry seems modest pulling into their driveway, but the cozy ceramic-tiled front porch offers a hint at what to expect inside: a neat, beautifully remade house. The Cherrys, married only three years, are a young couple building their relationship as they also rebuild their home. They bought the house just before they were married. Mike, 27, a production operator for LLOG Exploration, would spend his days onshore painting over dark, aged paneling. Sarah, 25, a registered nurse who works in labor and delivery at Iberia Medical Center, would go to the home on some evenings and weekends, especially when Mike was working offshore, to help with the painting.

they’re becoming too crowded, as often happens with large daffodil clumps, or if they are blooming less each year, Perry said. “Dig and shake the soil off bulbs after bloom, leaving leaves attached if not died off already. Bulbs should separate naturally, otherwise plant back ones still joined together,” he said. “Don’t forcibly pry bulbs apart.” Should you treat tulips as annuals or perennials? Tulips need to be in dry, well-drained soils during their summer dormancy if they’re to multiply or return to bloom, said Scott Kunst, head gardener and owner of Old House Gardens in Ann Arbor, Mich. “That’s hard to come by in the rainy eastern half of the U.S. or where people water during the summer,” he said. “In those situations, many people just grow tulips as annuals.” From Page 11

In almost four years, the Cherrys have put spent about $30,000 to put improvements into their home. They saved as much as they could, estimated costs and was sure the money was on hand to complete the immediate project they would start. “Whenever you budget, always budget with a cushion,” Mike said. Like with the extensive work necessary to restore floors, once the demolition starts, it is likely there will be more materials, and possibly more labor, to finish a job.

Be sure to plan relatively easy. New furniture, paint and curtains made it a cozy place for the couple to relax after a hard day’s work.

Kurt said he and Tiffany spend time

Plan ahead sessions continued, Kurt, who is handy with building things, added a work station to the barbecue grill. Building around the grill, he enclosed a section under the handle on the left side and added a counter on the right side, making an L-shaped station. One added convenience was a natural gas line that extended in the backyard. The Girouards tied their grill into the line so trips to the store for more propane have been eliminated. After Kurt and Tiffany finished the convenient station for the barbecue, which they use often to entertain friends, they decided a poolside bar, complete with a restroom, could be a nice addition. So, Kurt built that, too. “It gets easier as you go,” Kurt said of the work the couple has done on their backyard. “You learn from each project.”

searching the Internet for interesting ideas after an idea strikes them. After gathering 20 to 30 options, they winnow it down, then budget for all the materials. They try to do one considerable project each year. This summer, Kurt hopes to dig a new fish pond in front of the bar. The linear pond would allow the fish to swim back and forth, rather than around and around in the bowl-shaped pond they have now. Then, the Girouards will build a bridge to get to the bar. The Girouards bring a lot of enthusiasm to their work. All the work they do “keeps you young, moving and doing things,” Tiffany said. But there is downtime to enjoy it all, Tiffany said. Now retired after working in her catering business for years, the Girouards take advantage of the quieter times to enjoy all that they have done. “We like to sit back (on the patio or in the pool or hot tub) and say, ‘We did it,’” Tiffany said.

What Size? “Scale is the most important factor in modernizing the look and feel of florals,” says Flynn. He suggests avoiding flowers that are depicted at their actual size. Instead, pick patterns where the flowers are bigger — between 50 percent and 200 percent larger than life-size. Call agrees: He’s a fan of using vintage prints in “the largest scale you can find,” so that the print’s eye-popping size contrasts with its traditional style. But Call and Burnham also think floral prints can look modern if they’re printed on a very small scale, especially if they’re used on smaller items like throw pillows.

eteran bulb growers have learned to put patience ahead of pruning in helping their perennials bloom season after season. They’re in no rush to remove the unsightly leaves and stems of these botanical storehouses, which need time after flowering to renew their growth cycle. “We consider the foliage of the bulbs the ‘recharging batteries’,” said Becky Heath, president and chief executive officer of Brent and Becky’s Bulbs at Gloucester, Va. “If they aren’t recharged, the flowers won’t bloom again.” Bulbs will green up despite premature pruning, but return with fewer and smaller blossoms. How long must you wait before trimming the foliage to get successive seasons of color? “After spring-flowering bulbs finish blooming, allow for approximately six to eight weeks before

removing the foliage to ground level,” said Hans Langeveld, co-owner of Longfield-Gardens.com, a retail website for bulbs, perennials and edibles in Lakewood, N.J. “Another rule of thumb is to wait until the foliage turns brown and dries out.” That garden grooming tip applies to all springflowering bulbs including tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, alliums and specialty varieties, Langeveld said. But there are ways to make the decay less unsightly. “An idea is to combine bulbs with other perennials in the borders like hosta so that hosta foliage covers the dying bulb foliage,” he said. Summer-blooming bulbs that flower until cold weather arrives need differing levels of maintenance. “This (first killing frost) would be the time to cut to ground level and dig the bulbs that are not winter-resistant, like dahlias, gladiolus and begonias,” Langeveld said.

Other post-bloom, bulbcare suggestions: • Braiding. “The only foliage that lends itself to be braided are daffodils,” Langeveld said. “It is not a necessity, but it will help keep your borders neat and tidy.” • Seed pods. “Make sure to remove the seed pods that sometimes form after blooming,” he said. “These eat up a lot of energy from the bulbs.” • Fertilize when planting for healthier roots. Before and during bloom also are good times to apply bulb fertilizer, said Leonard Perry, an extension professor with the University of Vermont. “This can be a granular form (of fertilizer) as bulbs are emerging or you can water with a liquid fertilizer,” he said in a fact sheet. “The key is to provide nutrients as the leaves are making food for the next year.” • Divide the bulbs if

fter years of simple solids and geometric prints, the lowly flower is making a comeback in decor. Floral patterns have been blooming all over fashion runways in recent months, and they are slowly finding their way back into the world of home decorating, too. It wasn’t long ago that any mention of floral upholstery or wallpaper brought back memories of 1980s cabbage roses, flowery Shabby Chic borders stenciled high on bedroom walls, and suburban homes designed to feel like precious cottages swathed in pink and green. But today’s new patterns aren’t your grandmother’s florals. And they can be a refreshing antidote to the minimalist patterns that have dominated home decorating in recent years. “It’s what we’re all craving,” says New York-based designer Jon Call, founder of Mr. Call Designs. “It’s romance, it’s a softness ... and it feels fresh again, because no one has defined it for our generation.” While brands like Laura Ashley delineated the floral look of a generation ago, the new florals have no rules. Which makes them more fun — and more challenging — to use successfully.

Mike’s experience in construction was enhanced by tackling so many projects, he said, but there is a bit of advice he would offer. “Never do anything you’re not comfortable doing,” he said. “Don’t guess at it. “Accept, and ask for, help when you need.” He was comfortable hiring someone else to do major items, like putting in a central heating and air conditioning system, running electricity and installing a new septic system. The learning also wasn’t always in home repairs or remodeling, Sarah said. It built their relationship, too. Working together on many parts of the home improvement projects meant spending a lot of time together. “I thought of it as learning a lot about each other,” Sarah said. He learned patience

You might try “chinoiseries that include figures and florals,” Burnham says, “or flora and fauna... That’s a way to do it if you’re kind of scared of just flowers.” Another option is choosing a pattern that’s more “botanical” than flower-filled. “Homeowners with aversions to super-girly florals featuring rosebuds or elaborate petals may find botanicals a better fit,” says Flynn. “While floral prints include shapes and silhouettes of actual flowers, botanicals rely more on stems and leaves.” Call points out that designers like Vivienne Westwood have created digitized, pixilated floral prints that mix traditional and modern style. But, he says, even the most classic chintz fabrics can look great in a modern home if they’re handmade and high quality. Flynn encourages clients to mix floral patterns with other prints. “The floral cottage style of a decade ago was all florals and ribbons,” Flynn says. “Anytime I’m dealing with a home occupied by couples arguing over masculine and feminine styles, I’m likely to mix botanicals or florals with classic masculine prints such as gingham, check or plaid.” That juxtaposition of “classic girly prints with iconic patterns used for men’s spaces” creates a modern, gender-neutral room.

f it weren’t for the inside pets, Kurt and Tiffany Girouard might not spend much time indoors. The Girouards purchased their Pocahontas Street home 12 years ago and have spent the past dozen years painting and updating their home as many couples do. But when it came to spending time outside, Tiffany, 39, cannot get enough. She said she oftentimes will go inside only to check on their pet dog. “I thought, man, if we had a bathroom outside, I’d never have to go inside,” Tiffany laughed. Well, the Girouards have that now, too, so when she spends time tending to flowers or plants or just piddling around in the backyard, there’s no reason to head indoors.

Starting off simple An outdoor patio is common for many homes. The Girouards, however, soon expanded it and put to

use things around the house that might not have been as they were intended. For instance, Kurt, 45, a wireline operator for Superior Energy, wanted a fish pond, so an old satellite dish (the huge kind used more than 25 years ago). He and his wife scoured out enough earth for it Jeff Zeringue / the daily iberian to fit in the tiffany girouard, left, stands with her husband, purchased, but the storage section on the botground. Adding a little at a time With two children, Jacob Primeaux, who is 19 and attending LSU, and Abigail, 15, a freshman at Catholic High School, the Girouards wanted a pool. An aboveground pool worked when their children were young, but about three years ago, they added an in-ground pool and a large area of concrete. They have a large backyard, so having the space wasn’t a problem. As their brainstorming See FocUS, Page 5

Soon came a deck and a hot tub, which would prove to be beneficial for more than relaxing. Soaking in the hot tub, and relaxing with a glass of wine, Kurt and Tiffany would brainstorm, possibly more scheming on Tiffany’s part, what could be done next. Kurt, a laid back, quiet man sure of himself and his skills, would listen to Tiffany excitedly explain a plan. Soon he would nod and say, “Yeah, I think we can do that,” as he calculated in his mind how to get the job done.

Comfortable kitchen leads to great cooking allows for numerous food preparation options on an all-in-one cooking surface. You can steam, grill, warm and more with the included griddle -- eliminating the need for additional spacehogging appliances like steam ovens and warming drawers. This is a great way to be a more flexible cook in a small amount of space. More information on flexible cooktops is available at www.ilveappliances.com.

T

he kitchen is perhaps the most functional room of any home, but often it doesn’t feel large enough or flexible enough. And great cooking starts with a comfortable kitchen. While renovating your kitchen may not always be practical, there are steps you can take to improve it without breaking the bank or your kitchen walls. Here are a few ways to make the most of your kitchen:

maximize Storage

evaluate your kitchen It’s time to weed out the good, the bad and the ugly. When is the last time you did a thorough inventory of your kitchen gadgets? After several years without an assessment, it’s possible you’ve acquired a substantial collection of electric openers, dicers, slicers and spinners. If all these tools help you cook, that’s fabulous. If not, they are simply taking up valuable cabinet, cupboard and countertop space. Take a look at what you have and eliminate anything that’s duplicative, broken or somehow unnecessary.

You don’t need to settle for antiquated appliances that perform just one function.

These days, you don’t need to settle for antiquated appliances that perform just one function. Innovations are making cooktops and ovens more functional and versatile, providing greater opportunities for spatial kitchen layout. For example, you could pair a Improve functionality Re-think your appliances. gas cooktop with an electric oven

or install electric ovens side by side. Consider appliances from such brands as Verona, an Italian manufacturer that applies extensive cooking expertise to built-in ovens, cooktops and ranges. Inspired by classical Italian designs, their hand assembled cooktops and ovens offer a choice of fuel

Creative storage solutions will increase your work area and cabinets, while affording more space to move around. For example, an over-the-door spice rack can give you more room to prep food. A wall-mounted wine rack that holds both bottles and glasses can free up cabinet space and reduce the furniture footprint of your kitchen. Magnetic panels on the wall can be used to store pots, pans, knives and metal utensils. When it comes to your kitchen, don’t settle for anything less than top-notch, flexible appliances and an ideal use of the space you have. Whether you’re a serious chef or a casual cook, your kitchen can benefit from key upgrades and a thorough organizational sweep.

sessions continued, Kurt, who is handy with building things, added a work station to the barbecue grill.

In almost four years, the Cherrys have put spent about $30,000 to put improvements into their home. They saved as much as they could, estimated costs and was sure the money was on hand to complete the immediate project they would start. “Whenever you budget, always budget with a cushion,” Mike said. Like with the extensive work necessary to restore floors, once the demolition starts, it is likely there will be more materials, and possibly more labor, to finish a job.

eteran bulb growers have learned to put patience ahead of pruning in helping their perennials bloom season after season.

Which Pattern? Find a floral print that really appeals to you personally, Burnham suggests. “Nothing corny, nothing ordinary,” she says. You want “something really special.” See floralS, Page 3

The special way Sarah wanted her kitchen cabinets has taken a while because there are several layers of primer, paint and a lacquer-like coating for an antique type of finish. But the Cherrys will press on with improving upon good things in their home, and in each other.

5 03.27.14 HOME/GARDEN fter years of simple solids and geometric prints, the lowly flower is making a comeback in decor.

He learned patience

searching the Internet for interesting ideas after an idea strikes them.

“In those situations, many people just grow tulips as annuals.”

Soon after they wed and moved in together, the Cherrys formed a plan to make improvements, updating the 50-year-old house, starting in the kitchen. “She wanted granite (countertops), but when we saw how much they cost, we just couldn’t,” Mike Cherry said. The answer came with 12-inch-by-12-inch

square pieces of granite that Mike laid out on the existing Formica countertops.

Source your food locally to reduce your carbon footprint. If possible, buy local, in-season fruits and vegetables that didn’t have to travel the world to reach your plate. And while flowers are beautiful to look at — and the right ones can provide nectar for pollinating insects and birds — consider turning at least part of your garden into a space for herbs and vegetables to grow.

You may think of your yard as “yours,” but you are actually sharing the space with furry creatures, insects and birds. Habitat destruction and loss, as well other manmade and natural threats, put beautiful species like humming birds at risk. Make your garden a safe haven with bird feeders and by planting native, sustentative shrubs, trees and flowers. Unfortunately, bird to building collisions, particularly with windows, are estimated to kill between 100 million and 1 billion birds in the United States alone, according to a new report from the Cooper Ornithological Society.

Ensure your kitchen is properly outfitted with labeled paper and plastic recycling bins. Keep these receptacles handy to encourage your family and guests to make use of them. Take your waste reduction a step further by setting up a bin for food scraps, which you can add to your yard trimmings. Composting creates a natural fertilizer that’s makes a planetfriendly alternative to the chemical variety. they’re becoming too crowded, as often happens with large daffodil clumps, or if they are blooming less each year, Perry said. “In those situations, many people just grow tulips as annuals.”

sessions continued, Kurt, who is handy with building things, added a work station to the barbecue grill.

Which Pattern? Find a floral print that really appeals to you personally, Burnham suggests. “Nothing corny, nothing ordinary,” she says. You want “something really special.” See floralS, Page 3

5 03.27.14 HOME/GARDEN fter years of simple solids and geometric prints, the lowly flower is making a comeback in decor.

He learned patience

searching the Internet for interesting ideas after an idea strikes them.

Girouards’ focus turns to the outside BY JEFF ZERINGUE THE DAILY IBERIAN

f it weren’t for the inside pets, Kurt and Tiffany Girouard might not spend much time indoors.

Soon he would nod and say, “Yeah, I think we can do that,” as he calculated in his mind how to get the job done.

he kitchen is perhaps the most functional room of any home, but often it doesn’t feel large enough or flexible enough. And great cooking starts with a comfortable kitchen. While renovating your kitchen may not always be practical, there are steps you can take to improve it without breaking the bank or your kitchen walls. Here are a few ways to make the most of your kitchen:

evaluate your kitchen It’s time to weed out the good, the bad and the ugly.

“Anytime I’m dealing with a home occupied by couples arguing over masculine and feminine styles, I’m likely to mix botanicals or florals with classic masculine prints such as gingham, check or plaid.” That juxtaposition of “classic girly prints with iconic patterns used for men’s spaces” creates a modern, gender-neutral room.

t’s the time of year when sprucing up your deck and patio becomes a top weekend priority. Whether you use the space for entertaining or for solitude, you’ll want it clean, comfortable and safe this spring. Take time to dust off your outdoor furniture and wipe down cushions that have been in storage all winter. Inspect flower pots, bird feeders and other outdoor décor to ensure they withstood the cooler months. Replace anything that is damaged. Before setting furniture and décor back, give the surface below a good clean. Whether you’re dealing with cement, brick or wood, the quickest and most thorough way to deep clean and restore surfaces to a like-new condition is with a pressure washer. Knowing how to use one properly is important for a quality job and for your safety.
