Providing service to customers in a friendly, affordable manner led Rudy Draper and Tommy Baird to open Affordable Heating and Air, a certified Trane distributor, in Roanoke Rapids in 1991. “I’m from Roanoke Rapids and I’ve been working in heating and air since college,” said Baird. “Draper started working for a heating and air company while he was still in high school. We just wanted to treat customers as friends and make sure we treat their problems in an affordable manner.” Baird added his company stresses personal attention, and considers his customers to be his friends. Customer satisfaction, he said, flows from his

wife, Office Manager Joyce Baird, and touches every aspect of the business. “Joyce keeps us all in line,” Baird said. “Customer satisfaction comes first, her way.” With so many options available in heating and air, Baird said his company stands apart. “We are customer friendly,” Baird said. “We give good service, good installation, and look after each customer.” With customer service serving as a guiding principal, Baird said it’s easy to sum up what makes his business special. “Good people,” he said, “good service, good equipment, happy customers.”

Barfield Chiropractic Health Center What is the Chiropractic approach? Spinal degeneration is a barometer of spinal health. Yet we need not sit and passively await our spine’s destruction. Chiropractic spinal adjustments can decrease the rate of degenerative joint disease and improve the chances of the joints, nerves, discs, and other tissues remaining healthy and strong throughout our lifetime. Barfield Chiropractic Health Center was first opened in 1912, by Dr. Paul H. Barfield, Jr’s grandfather. The current Dr. Barfield has been in practice since 1984 and is a member of the North Carolina Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Association, is a Diplomate in Acupuncture and is a Certified Nutritionist. He is a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, UNC Chapel Hill, and the National College of Chiropractic and is a lifelong

resident of Halifax County, NC. He is proud to say his practice is the oldest single family owned Chiropractic office in the world. He offers standard chiropractic treatments that include diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain, stress, fatique, gastro-intestinal discomfort and other health related conditions. He also offers alternative healthcare without drugs or surgery. One of these alternatives is Acupuncture also known as Meridian Therapy. The human body’s energy flow courses over twelve pairs of meridians or channels that are normally well balanced. If a disruption of energy flow exists, it can alter the entire system, producing pain or symptoms in the body. Correction of the imbalance corrects the problem. This is Acupuncture’s goal – to restore normalcy to the body’s energy balance by utilizing a combi-

nation of acupoints located on the twelve pairs of meridians. This involves the stimulation of key energy control points on the body. Balance is essential to the body’s handling of nutrients. He offers a complete line of natural nutritional supplements produced by Standard Process that can aid in reaching and maintaining your healthy balance. Weight management can also be assisted thru the use of these supplements. If you are recovering from a serious injury or from surgery, he can work with you through this rehabilitation period to get you back to your best as soon as possible. Dr. Barfield’s main mission is to help restore his patients health and give them a better life. He will work with you to devise a manageable plan to help you be your very best.

P&A Pawn Shop When Maurice C. Fleming moved to Roanoke Rapids, he realized this was the place he wanted to raise his family. Thus when the company he was working for wanted to transfer him again, he opened a pawn shop. Now 45 years later, his family stills owns and operates the business in it’s current location at 930 Roanoke Avenue. His wife, Fabel, has retired and enjoys spending time with her friends. His daughter, Marsha (a horse enthusiast), along with a staff that includes 3 grandmothers, a piano teacher, a college student, an experienced markswoman and avid hunter offer a unique experi-

ence for shoppers. They have a large variety of merchandise, including the largest selection of handguns, rifles and shotguns in the area along with musical instruments, jewelry and more. If you don’t see what you are looking for, just ask. They carry new merchandise along with used. The women can help you find that special ring or the right firearm. They attract a regular group of shoppers, who stop by to see “what’s new” when they are passing through on their way to Florida and back to the Northeast. They also offer great bargains for the “flea market” and “yard

sale” crowd. Something for everyone can be found. They are members of the NC Pawnbrokers Association and offer small loans starting at $10. They pride themselves on being fair to their customers and on their integrity. Their atmosphere is not what you might expect for a pawn shop. They are a friendly, fun loving group and truly enjoy what they do. They want you to leave their store, knowing you had a positive experience and that you will come back again. You just need to stop by and see for yourself.

Perkinson's BP Service Station

Perkinson's BP Service Station was founded in 1938 (as Perkinson's Gulf) by T.S. Perkinson (1919-2002). He created a business where the customers' needs come first. The fact that this is still a thriving business after seventy-three years proves that they must be doing something right. It is the oldest service station in the city that is still operated by the same family in the original location. Today, Larry Perkinson and Marvin Allen still provide the

Perkinson's

personal service that is not found in most modern service stations today. They will clean your windshield, check your fluids and your tires, while filling your tank. They offer full service gasoline, oil & filter change, safety state inspections, battery replacement and tire rotation/repair while you wait (usually no longer than twenty minutes). So drop by Perkinson's BP any time for this old fashioned “Customer First” service that has been their trademark since 1938!
