Owner Clippendales Michelle Puetz, known for her gentle grooming and love of dogs, was voted Best Pet Groomer in the Valley for 2012. Puetz has been in the pet grooming business for more than 20 years. She started grooming in Fargo, then moved to the Twin Cities in the early 90s. When she moved to Wahpeton, she initially worked at Dakota Veterinary Hospital for two years, and six years ago she opened Clippendales in Wahpeton. "It's my calling I think," Puetz said as she groomed a shih tzu named Peaches. "I can't see myself doing anything else." In the summer she grooms 40 to 45 dogs a week. When dealing
First Place Best Pet Groomer with aggressive dogs, Puetz has a special eye. She never needs a muzzle because she reads a dog's posture and temperament and then decides what approach to take. "It just comes natural," she said. "But I've been bit, don't get me wrong." The key, she said, is to go slower with those dogs. "As long as they understand you're not hurting them (it's fine)," she said. Puetz also works with her assistant, Becky Flaherty, who said it's nice to work with Puetz. "She does a great job. She's a great teacher," Flaherty said.

"She has that magic touch." Puetz has three dogs and a cat herself. Since she was 18 years old, she has always had at least two pets. In the early 90s she volunteered with Adopt-A-Pet Rescue cleaning kennels, taking dogs to the mall to get them adopted and fostering dogs. That is how she first became involved with grooming. Clippendales provides grooming services such as baths and nail, hair and ear clipping. Puetz tries to make all of her customers happy. "I just like to work. I have a good clientele here," she said. They now do work with tires and alignment, chassis work, and basic oil tune-ups changes, among other things. Before Weick opened the business he graduated from North Dakota State College of Science's auto program and worked at a farm equipment dealership. "After I was in the field for a while for someone, I was ready to be self-employed if the opportunity came," he said. All of his current auto technicians went through the NDSCS auto program. "There's a lot of stuff you just learn by doing, too," Weick said. Big John's Carpro Inc., voted for Best Mechanics in the Valley for 2012, has grown through the years from being a muffler shop to doing all kinds of car work. Big John's opened in 1988 as a muffler shop that did custom exhaust. Bryan Weick, owner, had always wanted to be selfemployed. At the time, only he and one other automotive technician worked there. Since then, the shop has grown and Weick now works with four auBritt Rovig, one of the mechanics at Big John’s Carpro Inc., in Wahpeton, works on the exhaust system on a car. Big John’s was voted as the best mechanic for the Best in the Valley.

Sirek said this long-term stability allows them to develop strong relationships with customers. "The customers can come back in five or 10 years and recognize the same faces," Sirek said. Dennis Grandalen, auto body technician, has worked for the business for 50 years. He began soon after he graduated from North Dakota State College of Science, and he doesn't plan on leaving anytime soon. He said he's made some good friends there throughout the years and gotten to know the old-time customers. "They'll have to bury me in the pit," he joked as he pointed across the shop. Sirek also said there's a lot of camaraderie between the employees. They understand the

When Judith Schmidt heard she was voted Best Dentist in the Valley this year, she immediately attributed the success to the team at The Clinic for Oral Health in Wahpeton. "It isn't just what I do. It's what our whole team does," she said. The team starts their work day with a huddle to make sure that everything is organized and arranged for the day. Schmidt said they have a positive workplace environment. Julie Russell, patient care coordinator, said she wanted to work at the clinic from the moment she walked in the door. "We have a lot of long-term employees," said Joel Sirek, general manager. "There's not a lot of turnover." The business has been in the area for more than 50 years.
