Couples sharing a lifetime of dreams BY KARMA CHAMPAGNE

Iona and Thomas Rochon

THE DAILY IBERIAN

When Iona Pellerin Rochon and Thomas H. Rochon first laid eyes on each other, they knew they had found the right person to share their life with for their remaining years. She was only 17 years old and he was 19 when they exchanged wedding vows. Each never doubted that they would have a strong marriage and be able to grow old together to enjoy life to the fullest. The New Iberia couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on June 11. Those 70 years resulted in nine children, three of which are deceased, 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. “We went together exactly two years, six months and 10 days before we were married, but we knew we were right for each other. I guess you can say I did a pretty good job of picking out a wife. The proof is in the pudding,” he said.

F

our Teche Area couples celebrating 50 and 70 years of marriage agree a successful marriage doesn’t just happen. It is built on respect, love, compatibility, trust, communication and a strong faith. It is about sharing dreams and fears and working together as a team to deal with crisis and adversity. It is about having fun and laughing together. With 220 years of combined marital experience between Iona and Thomas H. Rochon, Judy and Edward Anthony Dauterive III, Bernice and Ronald Gray and Margaret and Robert Trahan, newlywed couples may want to take note of their advice to a long and successful relationship that has led to a life fulfilled with joy.

celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 2060. “I can’t wait until the day that we are the couple giving advice after 50 years of marriage,” she said. The newlyweds have already established their priorities and needs as to what they believe will lead to a successful marriage. “We believe trust and companionship are vital in having a strong marriage. Your spouse has to be your best friend. Faith also plays a major role in our relationship,” she said. The couple plans to follow the examples set by their own parents. “ Both of our parents have strong, trustworthy, loving and spiritual relationships. ly she had found the perfect husband with which to share her life. “We’ve always had respect for one another and that is important in a marriage. You just need to make sure there is lots of love between you before making a commitment.” Thomas Rochon said every marriage has rough times and couples often face financial problems, which can lead to big trouble. The Rochons said they always made it a policy never to spend more money than they had on hand and to always leave a few extra dollars at the bank to prepare for an enjoyable retirement. “The younger generation has more opportunities than we ever did, but they need to remember its takes cooperation and working together as a family for a successful marriage,” he said.

As the two look back on their years of marriage. They agree trust, understanding and strong religious faith played a big part in their successful marriage. “You must always remember the thing that you loved the most about your spouse when you first met,” said Judy Trahan Dauterive. “I remember one of the first things that attracted me to Eddie was his sense of humor. He still makes me laugh today at the stories he tells.” The Dauterives said young couples entering into marriage should be prepared for some rough times. “We had a rough first year of our marriage and that was the hardest. In our first year, we had to cope with the death of our first child. But if anything, that brought us closer together because we had to console and comfort each other,” she said.

If health allows, the Dauterives are hoping to have the opportunity to celebrate their 70th anniversary. “My maternal grandparents were able to celebrate 72 years of marriage so that would be wonderful if we could do the same. I think the word divorce was never in my family’s vocabulary. We always had a lot of examples of love and devotion,” she said. The Dauterives said it is important for a couple to spend time together, but it is equally important for both husband and wife to each enjoy their own passions. “I knew when I married him he had a passion for hunting and fishing, so I would always let him go to the camp on weekends and I would use that time for my quiet time or to do things I enjoyed. We still never stopped doing things together and with family,” she said. As they look back over the past 50 years, they consider themselves fortunate to have a good marriage which resulted

in three children and eight grandchildren to share in their lives. “You just have to remember that the road to a good marriage has its peaks and valleys,” she said. Both agree that compromise, respect for one another and dealing with controversial issues by talking problems out are some of the best tips that can be given on succeeding in a lasting marriage. “In all the years we’ve been married, we never raised our voices to each other. Whenever, we’ve had a controversial issue, we’ve always listened to each other and talked it out,” he said. “I guess when we grew up and raised our family it was a good time. Life was a lot simpler then those were good times.”

Bernice and Ronald Gray

Bernice and Ronald C. Gray celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 11. The New Iberia couple said a successful

marriage is all about picking the right partner, deep love, patience and understanding each other’s needs. “When I got married, I never thought that I would be married for 50 years. We had a lot of ups and downs in our marriage, but we listened to each other and made it work,” said Bernice Vallot Gray. Just as many other married couples, the Grays have gone through some rough years in their marriage but always managed to survive by drawing support from each other. In 2000, they were faced with the death of their son Eric Gray Sr. “We had to turn to each other for comfort and we did find comfort in knowing that he left us a beautiful grandson Eric Gray Jr.,” she said. Ronald Gray said marriage should be viewed as a job if it is going to be lasting. “You can’t just have a good marriage with love alone, you have to want it to work,” he said. “ Instead of trying to solve their problems today, many turn to divorce as a solution.”

as much as possible,” she said. Their advice to newlyweds is to never put too much emphasis on material things, placing more importance on finding the best qualities in each other. Both agree, a successful marriage is not just based solely on love — the couple has to be compatible if they expect a long and happy marriage. In fact, the Grays are so compatible, they each coincidentally bought the same anniversary card for each other proclaiming “50 years – a lifetime of love.” “When we gave our cards to each other, all we could do is start laughing. That’s how much we think alike,” she said. The Grays said the key to finding a perfect partner to work along the side of for the rest of one’s married life is to find a partner that will stop and listen. “I’ll always remember, God said, ‘to love one another as I have loved you.’ I’m hoping we can see many more years together with God’s help,” she said.

Margaret and Robert Trahan know their decision to make a lifelong commitment was a good one. Fifty years later, the New Iberia couple looks back over their life with a sense of fulfillment as they prepare to celebrate their anniversary June 25. Their lives have been filled with plenty of love and a strong family bond with their five children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Little has changed since their first day of marriage. They still end each night with prayers, a kiss and profess their love for one another. “We never end the day without saying ‘I love you.’ It is something we have always done every night throughout the years to remind each other of our love,” said Margaret Delcambre Trahan. Both credit their strong Christian faith to the success of their marriage and agree a strong faith can help to keep a marriage on the right track. “No marriage is perfect, but you have to

really want a good marriage and be willing to work at it,” she said. “We’ve had our bad times and good times, but the good times far outweigh the bad.” The Trahans had their five children within the first 10 years of marriage so they quickly learned the importance of compromise and seeking support from each other. “When we were in disagreement over something about the children, we never discussed it front of them. We always showed support for each other and waited until we were alone to discuss the problem,” he said. “There has to be a lot of compromise. It can’t be all one way.” The Trahans said they always did everything together. “We never went anywhere without each other, always finding something that we could both enjoy,” she said.

The proof is in the pudding,” he said.

our Teche Area couples celebrating 50 and 70 years of marriage agree a successful marriage doesn’t just happen.

I thank God every night for sending me my soul mate,” she said. The Youngs said they already recognize the importance of spending quality time together and just enjoying each other. “Caleb’s schedule requires him to be away for 21 days. The time away makes us really appreciate our relationship, she said. During his time home, we truly appreciate our time together and it helps that we enjoy the same hobbies.” “I feel blessed that I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend,” he said.
