So, they drilled deep-water wells, after engineers told them that there was no water. “They found water 800 feet down,” said Milan. Milan worked for Stanley Card Farms in Milan during the summers since he was a teenager, because it was a Japanese custom, according to the Japanese farmer, that he couldn’t tell the partner’s son what to do. know anything about banking, in fact, I don’t even like wearing a tie.” But in order to appease his father he said, “ I made a deal with my father. I said I always wanted to go to Mexico to study. I found a university that offered a degree in international trade.” The university was Mexico City College, later renamed the University of the Americas. One of his professors introduced him to representatives from Chase Manhattan Bank. Milan told them that he would like to go back to work at his hometown bank. The professor told him, “You have the best of two worlds. First, you are an

American, you speak good Spanish and you are going to marry a Mexican.” The Chase Manhattan Bank representative said, “If I were you, I would go back and learn the banking business with the intention of being the president or owner…or both.” In 1958, Milan married Hortensia Rubio and returned to Grants to start a career in banking. Milan worked his way up the ranks of managing the bank. In the 1960s, the bank started wavering, because of the beginning of the bust in mining industry. A bank from Albuquerque bought the Grants bank. Milan decided he

didn’t like banking, so he went back to school to get his master’s in business administration. “I loaded up my wife and four kids in our car, and said let’s go get my MBA,” so that is what I did, said Milan. After he graduated in the 1970s he said nobody was hiring at the banks. He moved his family to Dallas, Texas where he worked for United States Department of Health and Human Services for 21 years. In 1985, Milan organized the minority stockholders of the Grants State Bank and organized Community Bancshares, Inc., and was successful in buying out the majority stockholders. “Putting this thing

together, I thought was nearly accomplishing the impossible,” remarked Milan. “You know there is an ‘old saying’,” said Milan, “That you can’t come back, but, I came back and started all over again.” Thinking back on the memories of his father’s legacy. “I can never compete with my father, but I am doing what my father wanted me to do,” said Milan with sigh of gratification. Jamie Holton said, “Paul hasn’t been recognized for all he has done, so, in a small way this is a way to recognize him for all of his contributions.”

GRANTS – All livestock entering the Grants Rodeo Association (GRA) arena next week during the Wild West Days will be checked since cases of a virus, equine vesicular stomatitis, have been found in livestock in New Mexico. “We will be checking for current health papers, including the Coggins test, for all livestock entering the rodeo grounds,” said Richard Jones, president of the GRA. “It will take a little extra time and if we get backed up at the entry gate, there is a plan.” There are three veterinarians available to assist GRA in checking animals, according to Jones. The New Mexico Livestock Board reminded Fourth of July event organizers last week that they are responsible for checking animals before they enter the grounds for signs of the livestock virus. The directive was issued on June 20. “In respect to all livestock owners, we want to be on the safe side,” explained Jones. Call Jones, Jamie Holton or Norene Canada for more information on the issue or any questions regarding the Wild West Days. You can reach Jones at 2907377, Holton at 240-1486, or Canada at 290-0977. About Equine Vesicular Stomatitis Vesicular stomatitis is a viral disease that primarily affects cattle, horses, and swine and occasionally sheep, goats, llamas, and alpacas. Humans can also become infected with the disease when handling affected animals, but this is a rare event. Vesicular stomatitis (VS) has been confirmed only in the Western Hemisphere. It is known to be an endemic disease in the warmer regions of North, Central, and South America, but outbreaks of the disease in other temperate geographic parts of the hemisphere occur sporadically. VS results in blister-like lesions that can be so painful as to limit an animal’s ability to eat and even its mobility. The virus is not usually fatal.

GRANTS - The festivities will be extra thrilling this year with the presence of The Wild Riders performing at the Rodeo Grounds on Fourth of July. Audiences will be treated to see professional stunt horse riders perform their risky tricks on the bare backs of their horses. Abigail Peterson, Meishja Peterson and Tucker Manning will all be making their presence known come Sunday, by showing the audience what wild trick riding is about.

“Dedication, and to always be ready to get back up on the horse,” as they said in the fascinating video on their website. The three riders will dress themselves and their horses in flashy gear while they stand, flip over, and hang from the backs of their horses. Abigail, manager of the trio, and Meishja have spent years with their horses, perfecting each trick. After recently signing on Tucker Manning, they’ve made their performance a dynamic trio. All have spent many years, under the training of professionals, learning tricks like

All have patiently trained and practiced their specialties since babies, and have turned their love of horseback riding and exciting trickery to a profession. Many of their tricks require hanging by their ankles on the side of their horse, their heads inches away from both the horse’s legs and the ground. “There is a certain type of fearlessness that goes in this extreme sport,” says the Petersons. It takes a lot of grit, hard work, and dedication; a true passion for the sport and a bit of a wild side to be a trick rider,” explains Meishja. “We put ourselves in dangerous situations that would

Tough Enough to Wear Pink COWBOYS AND COWGIRLS FIGHTING BREAST CANCER By Sarah Kuhn Beacon Staff Writer

CIBOLA COUNTY - Pink is not a color associated with cowboys, bull riding, or wrangling. But this year, the Grants Rodeo Association (GRA) has tethered up with the Tough Enough to Wear Pink (TETWP) campaign at all its summer events to fight breast cancer. This is the second year that the association has taken part in the nationwide awareness campaign. “The cowboys – all these tough guys – all wear pink. They only wear pink for this,” said Norene Canada, association member. “It is literally a sea of pink.” All the money raised by the GRA through dona-

tions funds mammograms at Cibola General Hospital for those who have no insurance or can’t afford to pay for the preventative test. Last year, they raised $2,500, donating 25 mammograms, and this year they hope to do more. “Wrangler’s been doing it for seven or eight years, and we thought it was a great cause,” said Richard Jones, president of the association for seven years. Jones, 64, a long time resident of Cibola County, said the effort really hit home when close friend Matt Mathews, then vice president of association, was diagnosed with cancer. “We (association members) all volunteered in commuting Matt back and forth to Albuquerque for his appointments. My day was Fridays,” he said. “We did it for four months.”

Matthews eventually passed away from the disease, and association members honored him last year during the TETWP effort, as well as the many other friends and family members they know who struggle with the disease. “We are just glad we could help,” said Jones. “Every penny earned from the effort goes to Cibola General Hospital.” Dominic Moleres, association vice president, “It’s just a good deal to do something and contribute to the community.” “Both my grandmothers and myself had breast cancer,” said GRA member Candi Williams, whose son has leukemia. “All of us down the road somewhere have had somebody with it (cancer),” added Trudy Dean, also a GRA member.

The organization decided to fund mammograms when members realized that because of personal finances many area women,

“One of our rodeo secretaries didn’t have insurance and wouldn’t get a mammogram, explained Canada. “There are a lot of women in the Grants’ area who don’t qualify for public assistance, agreed Williams, “and they are all at risk for breast cancer if it isn’t caught with a mammogram. “Cibola General Hospital’s radiology department provides digital mammography services to area women, according to department director, Teri Smith. “We did approximately 1,000 mammograms during the 2011-12 fiscal year, she said, “and that number includes those who were recipients of the association’s fundraising efforts. Rodeo contestants automatically donate one dollar for the cause, and some give even more from their winnings. Money is also raised through donations, the cost of a $1 pink ribbon to display, or pink merchandise like shirts and hats. GRA member Lynn Miles is the contact for the main branch of the Pink network that connects all the pink clothes with the people who want to wear them and show their support. She stands outside of

Wal-Mart on Fridays and asks for donations and sells pink merchandise. Miles has met many survivors, including a woman who was celebrating her ninth year of life after the disease. “She bought a hat and got in her pink Jeep and drove away,â€? said Miles. “Her husband had painted her Jeep pink.â€? Many others are also showing their support. “I went to the county sheriff ’s department and said, ‘Are you cop enough to wear pink?’â€? Miles recalled. And in response, the whole department bought shirts with pink ribbons on them. Many area businesses have also gone “pink,â€? displaying ribbons or selling pink merchandise. These supporters include Jennie’s Pet Grooming, Chaffin’s, the American Legion, Wow Diner, El CafĂŠcito, Aaron Dean’s Carpet, and Grants State Bank. Residents can go to any of the bank’s branches and donate straight into a TETWP account. “Tough Enough to Wear Pink is all over the community,â€? said Dean. “And it’s not just for members,â€? said Miles. “Everyone can wear it. We want to paint the town pink.â€? TETWP began as a grassroots movement in 2004 when a breast cancer survivor, Terry Wheatley, had the idea to convince rodeo competitors to wear pink to demonstrate support for the cause. The color is not usually associated with rough-and-tumble events such as bull riding and roping. In just a few weeks, she joined forces with Karl Stressman, a Wrangler Jeans Company former director and a Professional Rodeo Cowboys’ Association commissioner, who helped her get pink shirts in time for the Las Vegas Nevada Rodeo. That night – the first time anyone was tough
