We feel that woodland qualifications can help generate ideas and add value to your groups experience, however there is no legal requirement for leaders, and we feel strongly that this should not be a barrier.

Organising Educational Visits Courses
These courses cover all aspects needed to plan and lead successful off-site school visits, and familiarise participants with current good practice in the effective supervision of children and young people. All of our courses follow national good practice guidelines from the Outdoor Education Advisors Panel (OEAP) and will help to ensure your school meets all health and safety, local policy and procedures, and Department of Education guidance for educational visits.
OEAP Educational Visit Coordinator (EVC) Course Course Content This one day course is for those who are responsible for managing educational visits in schools. The course follows the national Outdoor Education Advisors Panel (OEAP) syllabus, giving you the confidence to support your school and staff to manage and develop educational visits, including day and residential experiences. This course has been developed to include guidance and good practice, policy, and procedures and requirements for Local Authority (LA), Academy, Free and Independent Schools. OEAP Educational Visit Coordinator (EVC) Update Course Course Content This is an update course for existing EVCs, Headteachers, and Governors covering new developments and updates on good practice, guidance, and policy as well as providing a forum for discussion and sharing ideas and issues. It is recommended that EVCs attend an update course every three years. OEAP Visit Leaders Trainer (VLT)
Course Content A course for teachers and others working with children and young people who organise and lead educational visits. The course is not EVC Training and is offered in support of the leader’s role in educational visits and off-site activities. It remains the role of the employer (e.g. head of establishment, senior youth worker or educational visit coordinator) to determine the leader’s suitability and competence to undertake a leadership role on any particular visit or venture. Developing Adventure Learning Courses
These courses support schools and teachers with developing and integrating Adventure Learning activities into the school curriculum, including new ideas for the development and use of the school grounds or the local area. Courses are practical, and based in the outdoors, to allow participants to experience outdoor activities as well as discovering how to use them most effectively for different schools, ages and abilities of pupils.
OEAP Outdoor Learning Cards Course Content A practical skills course combined with a set of take home resources to use back in school, helping teachers develop a wide range of inspirational Adventure Learning activities: team-building and problem-solving, map reading and orienteering, journeying, camping, and bouldering (low climbing without ropes/equipment). The Outdoor Learning Card activities are aimed at KS2 and KS3 pupils, but can be adapted for use with younger or older pupils, and pupils with special needs. Each participant receives training and a full set of learning cards. Developing your School Grounds for Adventure Learning Course Content This course will help teachers and other staff to assess and develop their school’s grounds and local resources to create effective Adventure Learning spaces. The course looks at a wide variety of ways to enhance and develop Adventure Learning including; directly linking Adventure Learning to the curriculum, outdoor activities, team-building and problem-solving tools, environmental and wildlife activities. Resources can be linked directly to the academic curriculum, or the wider keys skills and pastoral curriculum. Developing a Wildlife and Outdoor Science Learning Area Course Content This practical course looks at how your school can develop a range of environmental and wildlife areas to enhance outdoor science and fieldwork activities, as well as supporting other areas of your curriculum. Developing Team-Building and Problem-Solving Activities Course Content A practical course designed to introduce the concept of Adventure Learning, and the use of team-building and problem-solving activities to improve pupils’ learning. It aims to help participants to develop outdoor activities at school that will complement learning inside the classroom. These courses are designed to support teachers in developing their geographical knowledge and teaching, providing a range of practical outdoor learning and fieldwork-based ideas and activities to enrich Geography lessons.
An Introduction to Primary Geography and Fieldwork Activities
An Introduction to Secondary Geography Fieldwork
Course Content Specifically tailored to the primary curriculum, this course explores a wide variety of different geographical features including rivers, rocks and soils, the water cycle, hills and erosion, and the use of fieldwork techniques and data collection.
Course Content A residential course based at Widehorizons Townsend Centre, located on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast. The course aims to develop participant’s geographical skills and knowledge in fieldwork, and to enhance your confidence in leading a field trip.
The aims of the course are to link practical outdoor geographical activities to classroom learning, whilst bringing geographical theories to life.
You will undertake a number of field visits and see firsthand geographical features and theories in practice. This course aims to develop your teaching and data collection skills in the field, gather case study ideas, and share knowledge with other secondary Geography teachers.

Forest School and Bushcraft
Forest School aims to increase the skills and knowledge of pupils’ through a learner-centered, holistic approach, ranging from creative play through to practical skills such as fire lighting and camp fire cooking, and working with bladed and traditional woodland hand tools. Forest School experiences can also be very successfully linked to cross-curricular learning and academic teaching, with the positive effects having lasting results back in the classroom and at home.
What is Forest School? Forest School is an inspirational ongoing process that offers children and young people regular outdoor experiences, throughout the seasons and in all weather (ideally weekly, for a minimum of 6 or 12 sessions, instead of a one-off visit), to maximise the learning potential of a local woodland or natural space.
An Introduction to Forest School and Bushcraft Activities Course Content A practical course introducing the concept and impacts of Forest School and Bushcraft-based activities, and how they can be used to support curriculum learning, behaviour management, motivation and attendance. Participants will try out a range of activities including; lighting and cooking on fires, shelter building, natural art and crafts, and storytelling. Level 2 Award in Forest School Programme Support (QCF)
Course Content This award is for teachers and teaching assistants suppoerting a Forest School Leader on a regular basis and is ideal for those looking to later progress to study Level 3. It involves recording and submitting a portfolio of evidence of your theory and practice relating to Forest School. This qualification takes at least three months to complete on a part-time basis. It is designed for people who want to work as assistants only, supporting an existing Level 3 qualified leader. Learning Outcomes + Understand how a Forest School can support an individual’s learning and development + Knowledge of how experiences can support learning and development at a Forest School + Understand sustainable woodland management at a Forest School + Identify and assess a suitable woodland site for a Forest School programme, taking into consideration HSE requirements for managing risk and child protection issues + Demonstrate the use and maintenance of correct tools for the needs of the group + Ability to perform the role of Assistant at a Forest School

Level 3 Certificate in Forest School Programme Leadership (QCF) Course Content This course is designed to meet the needs of teachers and teaching assistants in training as a Forest School Leader in order to progress to employment or further study. This course qualifies you to become a Forest School Leader, and lead Forest School sessions. The course involves practical and theoretical training and assessment. You will cover various tasks such as safe tool use, identifying Forest School sites, lighting fires, den building and other skills. Throughout this course you will also learn about child development and the ways in which children learn.

First Aid Courses
We offer a range of First Aid courses for those looking to lead groups in the outdoors. Our courses are taught by trainers who really understand schools and youth settings, and work directly with children and young people as teachers, outdoor advisors and outdoor instructors. We use the REC (Rescue and Emergency Care) Syllabus, which is widely recognised and recommended by outdoor based National Governing Bodies and approved by the Health and Safety Executive, as it has a very practical and flexible approach and allows trainers to create programmes and scenarios to suit the needs of the participants.
REC Emergency & Paediatric First Aid Course Content This course is designed for people who work outdoors with young people and adults. You will receive a First Aid certificate valid for three years on successful completion of the course, from a Health and Safety Executive recognised organisation. The two days will involve both classroom-based and practical learning, with scenarios of real situations included. This meets the paediatric first aid requirement for Early Years Foundation Stage. We offer a wide range of day visit adventures from curriculum-based courses, to personal development courses, including teambuilding and high adventure courses which increase confidence and self-esteem, as well as develop your group’s team work and communication skills.
Residential Visits Residential visits allow more time to experience the adventure and our activities, increasing the options and scope of what can be achieved. Staying away from home for the first time is a memorable experience for children and can teach valuable life skills. We promote a team ethic throughout the stay which introduces concepts of team work, trust and cooperation.

Adventure Learning Partnerships
What are Adventure Learning Partnerships? This is an exciting new initiative embedding Adventure Learning into the school curriculum, whilst ensuring the funding challenge is met, particularly for the most disadvantaged children and young people. The cost of adventure can be a challenge for schools and parents living in areas of high deprivation. Often it is children living in these areas who will benefit the most.
How does it work? ADVENTURE LEARNING Our expert team will design a programme of Adventure Learning bespoke to each school’s objectives
SCHOOLS FUNDRAISING Our experienced fundraisers will work with the school to help initiate fundraising ideas that will raise funds for their partnership
We are delighted to be working with Widehorizons as an Adventure Learning Partner. Our pupils benefit from Adventure Learning in so many ways as we are able to introduce them to an environment they have never experienced before, bring the Curriculum to life in a practical way, and at the same time strengthen relationships with their peers and build their self-esteem. Adventure Events
Widehorizons offers an exciting programme of Adventure Challenges for schools and adults.
Sunday 6th April, Hadlow College (nr Tonbridge), Kent £10 – £25 Cycle past historic Oast houses, beautiful hop gardens, and orchards in this fantastic Kent Sportive! With 60km and 120km route options on offer, The Fool’s Errand caters for cyclists of all abilities –whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or are just discovering your passion for the sport!
Saturday 21st June Start: Eltham or Horton Kirby (nr Dartford) Finish: Horton Kirby or Wrotham, Kent £10 registration fee / £90 fundraising Take part in a brilliant 50km or 25km through the striking urban landscapes of London and into the gorgeous countryside of Kent. You will follow some of the region’s most famous walking trails including the Green Chain Link, London Loop, Darent Valley Path, and North Downs Way. On your arrival at the finish line you will be greeted with a hearty hot breakfast!
Friday 4th July: Bewl Water, Kent Friday 11th July: Cannock Chase, Staffordshire £15 per participating pupil This is a 5-mile adventure walk around Bewl Water reservoir or Cannock Chase Forest for Years 5, 6, 7 and 8. In teams of 6, your pupils will have to complete surprise challenges along the route. All the funds raised by your pupils will be towards your school’s future adventures with Widehorizons!
If you decide to take part in Nightline or the Widehorizons Adventure Challenge we will allocate the money you raise to be put towards future adventures with Widehorizons for your school!*

Sunday 10th August, London £50 registration / £500 fundraising Take part in the biggest charity cycling event in the world with Widehorizons! This 100-mile cycling event follows the route of the 2012 Olympic Road Race past famous London landmarks and over the Surrey Hills. With gorgeous views and leg-testing climbs this is an event that you don’t want to miss!
Saturday 4th October Bewl Water Reservoir, Kent £270 per person fundraising This is the team-building challenge for the South-East. In teams of 2-4 people you will complete this demanding and exhilarating multi-activity challenge: 37km on a bike, 3km of canoeing, and a 10km walk/run. By taking part you’ll get to experience the best of the South-East countryside as you pass through the beautiful landscapes of Bedgebury Forest, Scotney Castle, and Bewl Water itself.
Sunday 12th October, London £15 registration / £300 fundraising This incredible half-marathon is one of the most beautiful city runs in the country. You will take in four of London’s magnificent Royal Parks and pass many of the capitals most famous landmarks including Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament, and the Royal Albert Hall.
*Terms and Conditions: money raised through Widehorizons’ Events can be ring-fenced for your school’s future adventures with Widehorizons. This applies only to new bookings made with Widehorizons after the Nightline event (Saturday 21st June 2014) or after the Widehorizons Adventure Challenge (Saturday 4th October) for the academic year 2014-15. Participants must state that they are raising money for your school when they register. Widehorizons will not allocate fundraising to your school if you inform us of this after you have registered for the event or after the event itself.
