One of the most common obstacles that family businesses face is multigenerational succession planning: what happens if the heirs of the business have different needs, talents and levels of interest in the family’s affairs? This is why succession planning is so important: at its core, it’s more about people than it is about material goods. From the outside looking in, many presume that succession planning simply relates to the transference of wealth, and that it is generally a simple matter relating to post-death legacies. As the wealthy and their advisors know all too well, these are misconceptions and the truth is far more complicated.

EMPOWERING SUCCESSORS PRESERVING WEALTH TO PROTECT THE FAMILY The unifying financial priority for UHNWs, across all their activities and plans, is always capital preservation—the ever-present challenge of maintaining their wealth. When it comes to succession planning, this challenge spirals out into a wide range of considerations, beyond taxation issues and wills to matters that extend into family complications, from divorce to the equitable distribution of wealth between heirs. All of these are key risks that need to be assessed thoroughly, and the measures that can be taken to address them require careful planning that is tailored to the needs of that particular family. Not only are these risks highly sensitive and liable to provoking disputes when handled in the wrong way, but even the right measures – ranging from wills and trusts to prenups – can be challenging to execute. Although some of this is well-understood, what often gets overlooked is that wealth preservation is not an end in itself. What ties these considerations together is the understanding that, for most UNHWs, wealth preservation is a means to ensuring

Succession planning is far from the kind of endof-life handover that some might imagine. Like everyone else, UHNWs want to pass on their vision and values to their successors. The difference is that the stakes are incredibly high, so the transmission of those principles matter all the more. This is especially true for those who built their wealth from the ground, but there are many different types of UHNWs. These differences range from the manner in which they acquired their wealth, through to their temperament, personality and preferences. All of this impacts the course they will choose to take in succession planning. For instance, some who earned their own wealth from relatively humble beginnings often want their children to fully understand the meaning of privilege and learn the value of hard work. They may set preconditions when opening access to their wealth, such as establishing a trust for a successor with a pot of money to be used only for investment purposes, to foster their entrepreneurial development. Others take a more lenient approach because they want their children to lead the life of luxury that they themselves did not have early in life.

Meanwhile, UNHWs who inherited their wealth often see themselves as the guardians or stewards of that fortune, tasked with ensuring that it is responsibly passed through to the next generation and beyond. With a long-term vision for their family, they begin educating their children about wealth early and put in place a highly controlled process for the transference of wealth.
Ultimately, it isn’t that one type of long-term vision for family wealth is necessarily better than another. Preferences vary across a whole range of metrics, from individual life histories to the culture in which families are raised. Whatever the life history, temperament, personality type and ultimate legacy aspirations of an UHNW, it is crucial that succession planning is done in a well-controlled and structured manner. Globalisation has meant that families no longer occupy the same physical space: they are scattered all around the world. But this only makes the need for tightly-knit family succession plans greater, so that the contingencies brought on by different members occupying multiple jurisdictions are properly accounted for. And because each family is different, there will never be one off-the-shelf product that can meet all needs. When the stakes are this high, bespoke solutions are required for each family and its particular set of circumstances. All of this means that the need to start planning early is more urgent than ever before. Succession planning cannot be treated as part of a process that begins during retirement. To deliver the best rewards for their families, UHNWs must treat it as a long-term project. Considering the set-up of a fiduciary structure, such as a Trust, is an excellent first step to starting that process. LW
IS THE NEXT GENERATION READY? A common question for many family heads is ‘when is the next generation ready’? An obvious time is when the children have completed their education and are ready to take on the financial responsibility of the family’s wealth. However, this is not always the most common route to succession. Research by Knight Frank found that just 26% of UHNWs have a full wealth transfer strategy in place and are unprepared to pass their legacy and knowledge to the next generation, highlighting that the next generation is not being educated early enough about the management of wealth. Therefore, we often see parents encouraging their heirs to enter the workplace before any succession takes place. The argument is that this gives them a better understanding of wealth

“I would say yes the recent times has been challenging when you see the new rules and regulations being introduced. MIFID II, for instance, has damaged the industry a great deal in the name of more transparency. “The result is that a number of small to midsize firms are giving up. For Camden, too, the result is mostly positive but it definitely is a problem to have legislation made by people who do not understand the basic rules of the financial markets.” In order to be in touch with new developments happening in their areas of specialisation, the team at Camden Associates tries and read the market and the new trends evolving. States Gonneau: “Clearly some powerful new trends are developing in North America including the revival of resources and the brand new cannabis planet . In Continental Europe, new oil saving technologies are all the rage alongside blockchain and healthtec. So we are active in those fields.” For instance, the team is currently working with a company which developed the ‘passcare’ the first portable patient record. “Crypted by blockchain, it will empower patients to control their medical record and their data – and it has attracted the attention of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is very encouraging.” Camden Associates is at the finalising stage of arranging finance for a company using hydrogenbased techniques to reduce car consumption and pollution drastically – which would mean 30 percent for consumption and up to 70 per cent for pollution.” In the mining sector, the firm has a number of very profitable small-size mining deals with a notable one being in Zimbabwe.
