Innovation
WHY CHOOSE CLAY? Used for thousands of years in construction worldwide, clay remains the most efficient, cost effective and sustainable solution for modern buildings. Its natural properties mean that it is able to provide complete, longterm sustainability, not only offering increasingly sophisticated low-carbon product manufacture, but giving a building life over 150 years with little or no maintenance.
From sustainability credentials and build quality to the ease of use onsite, clay as a material is equipped to meet every demand of modern construction.
Clay is strong, durable and builds in sound and temperature-control benefits wherever it’s used – creating the ideal internal living environment.
Wienerberger has blended the very latest in manufacturing technology with an established construction heritage. The result is a product
Wienerberger and clay
portfolio that is unmatched in range and quality. Every single brick, from first to last, has been designed to convey our passion for the material; created to give our customers the highest quality and the widest choice. Our products represent the best of clay, and the best of building.

Information & Advice
BRICK STYLES There are several types of bricks made in different ways each with differing characteristics. Handmade
Stock (also known as softmud)
Wirecut (also known as extruded)
Made by a very traditional process as used for centuries, where individual bricks are hand thrown into moulds. The method gives an attractive, gentle creased texture in the face of the bricks. They have an indent in the top of the brick known as a ‘frog’.
Created using an automated process where the clay is placed into moulds by a machine. Stock bricks tend to have softer, more varied edges. Like handmade bricks, stock bricks also often have a frog.
Produced by extruding a column of clay through a brick shaped die and then cutting the column into individual bricks using a wire. Wirecut bricks tend to have very precise edges and also have perforations through the bricks. The perforation pattern can be in many different forms depending on where the bricks are manufactured. They can also be produced as solid bricks.
St Johns Red Handmade
Warnham Red
Waterstruck
Engineering bricks
Made using a similar process to stock bricks but the bricks are released from the moulds using water. This process, along with a wetter clay mix, gives waterstruck bricks a distinctive texture. They are often solid bricks although some waterstruck bricks do have frogs.
Made using the same process as wirecut bricks. Engineering bricks are selected for their enhanced technical performance rather than their appearance. Engineering bricks have high compressive strength and low water absorption properties. They can be either perforated or solid and tend to be either smooth red or smooth blue.

ACHIEVING DIFFERENT LOOKS Creating the perfect look isn’t easy – there is a lot to consider. It’s important to understand how different elements can affect the visual appearance of your build.
MORTAR JOINT PROFILES With mortar joint profiles playing such an important role in weather proofing the brickwork, it needs to look good, but it also needs to perform.

Information & Advice
MORTAR COLOUR It might not get the same attention as the brick, but mortar accounts for a significant proportion of the visible
brickwork of a build. With that in mind, choosing the right colour can make all the difference. Whether you are looking

for subtle blends or clear contrast, below are some examples of the effects that mortar colour can create:
THE BRICK CALCULATOR On a brick build, choosing the right style is perhaps the most important aesthetic choice of the entire project. The colour and texture of the outside of the property will, more than any other individual element, define the appearance of the build. With our famed 150 years plus product life cycle, this is a choice that very much needs to have the

long-term in mind. It needs to be the perfect brick for you. However, one of the real advantages of Wienerberger’s range is that, despite the huge variety of style, size and texture available within our product portfolio, choosing the right brick represents only a relatively minimal proportion of the build cost. For example; on a large detached
QTY PER 5m²
QTY PER 10m²
house using 10,000 bricks, the cost of upgrading from a brick that costs £400/k to £600/k equates to just £2000. This means that choosing the best possible brick is an option that is as economic and practical as it is desirable.

Information & Advice
GOOD SITE PRACTICE Adhering to good site practice will ensure a smooth construction process and the best aesthetic results.
Delivery and Storage
Protection
Appearance
From the moment bricks are delivered to site, the way in which they are handled and stored can have an effect on the appearance of brickwork at a later point.
Protection of brickwork is important to prevent it becoming saturated as this can lead to staining and efflorescence (minerals emerging from the clay).
• Bricks should be unloaded onto hard, flat, level ground
•
A suitable site reference panel, representative of the consignment, should be constructed prior to commencement of brickwork in order to provide an indication of the finished wall appearance.
• It is recommended that brick packs should never be stored more than two packs high • Palletised products should be stored on-site in a single layer in order to eliminate handling damage • Brick packs should be stored in areas which will remain free from mud, splashing by site delivery vehicles and potential staining from other materials • All bricks in storage should be adequately protected against rain, snow and frost
12
•
Face brickwork should be kept clean and protected and care must be taken to avoid splashing from mortar pointing Exposed walls should be covered with waterproof materials during construction
•
Before laying bricks, site personnel should check that the colour, shape, size and texture are correct and as expected
•
In order to ensure a consistent appearance throughout the building bricks should be blended from a minimum of three packs at the same time in order to avoid colour ‘banding’
Mortar
Cleaning Brickwork
Code of Practice
Correct mortar specification and preparation is critical to the aesthetics, durability, rain resistance and structural performance of brickwork.
Good bricklaying and protection should minimise the need for cleaning completed brickwork, however there will usually be some need to remove mortar stains.
Bricks should be stored, handled and used in accordance with the Code of Practice for Use of Masonry
•
Deliveries of mortar should be protected from the elements
•
The mortar mixing area should be kept clean to avoid contamination
•
Consideration should be given to the appropriate mortar specification for different applications
•
Any large deposits of relatively fresh mortar can be removed by a wooden implement to avoid damage to the brick face
•
High pressure hoses and wire brushes should not be used as they may abrade the surface
•
With cement or lime stains it may be necessary to consider a proprietary brickwork cleaning solution

THE SWARLAND RANGE - ideal for repair, maintenance & improvement projects
56
Manufactured at our Denton factory, we are delighted to have introduced the Swarland range to our ever-growing brick offering.
We have worked in partnership with Swarland Brick Co. Ltd, the original manufacturer, to produce what we are confident is the closest match to the original bricks available on the market today. The range has been specifically designed for the repair, maintenance and improvements (RMI) market, particularly across the North of England and the Midlands. Due to its close colour match, our range is perfect for extensions and refurbishments of existing buildings built from the original Swarland bricks. The seven products within the range, all available in both 65mm and 73mm, are the Swarland Black, Brown, Pink, Autumn Brown Sandfaced, Golden Thatch, Purple Sandfaced and Red Sandfaced.

CREASING TILES
The perfect tile for use in exposed situations Tile creasing has been employed for many centuries as a means of shedding water and preventing dampness in walls, as well as for visual effect when used to construct fine details in brick and stone walls. A creasing tile is a flat slab of fired clay; unlike a plain tile it has no nibs, no holes, and no cambers. Although technically a tile, made in the same way and to the same standards as a clay plain tile, it is generally used more like a brick. Creasing tiles can be cut more accurately than a brick, and they can be used to good visual effect by
66
adding contrast of scale and texture in brick and stone work. In addition to their visual qualities, their low water absorption and durability make them particularly suitable for situations subject to excessive weathering, such as projecting drip courses. Their resistance to rising and penetrating damp, and their ability to form a strong bond with a mortar to make them an ideal damp-proofing medium for freestanding walls.
Freestanding Walls Freestanding walls, such as boundary walls are subjected to lateral loads. Most DPC materials in common use form a relatively weak bond with mortar, thus reducing the lateral stability of the wall along with the DPC. The use of two or more courses of DPC bricks (units of low water absorption) adjacent to the ground, set in a strong mortar will avoid this problem. Creasing tiles in two or more courses can provide an effective DPC under the capping and, with a generous projection from both faces of the wall can form a protective drip feature.
Openings Creasing tiles can be used to provide window sills and projection to the heads of door and window openings. Two courses of tiles projected from the face of the wall form an efficient weather resistant sill. Three or four courses of tiles corbelled out at the head of an opening can significantly increase its weather protection: this can be particularly valuable where the frame is subjected to severe exposure.
Parapet Walls Two or three courses of tiles, beneath the parapet coping will help to inhibit the passage of moisture down the wall. If these courses are detailed to project from the face of the wall they will also serve to throw water away from the face of the brickwork.
Chimneys Two courses of tiles, properly bonded and fully bedded in mortar projecting beneath the chimney capping will assist in preventing the ingress of moisture. In addition, two courses of tiles set just above the junction of the chimney with the roof will deter moisture from passing from the external masonry to the internal masonry, without impairing the structural stability of the stack.

POROTHERM
PRECISION MADE CLAY BLOCK WALLING SYSTEM The Porotherm clay block walling system form Wienerberger is the latest development in masonry.
72
The Porotherm clay block walling system form Wienerberger is the latest development in masonry. It is virtually dry, safe and simple to use, immensely strong, storageefficient and environmentally friendly. The heart of the system – and the secret of its speed and efficiency – is the precision-engineered clay block. A unique interlocking design rules out the need for mortar in the vertical joints and consistent manufacturing quality allows for true 1mm bed joints.
The key benefits of building with Porotherm: • Porotherm blocks can be laid much more quickly than traditional masonry • Offers the opportunity for bricklayers to compete on speed against timber frame construction • Porotherm blocks are lighter than concrete blocks, with no sharp edges, designed for single hand laying, thus reducing the risk of repetitive strain • ZeroPlus mortar included with the blocks and means building can continue down to temperatures of 0°C increasing the number of working days available during the winter months
• Achieve higher quality blockwork thanks to the precision engineered blocks and true 1mm bed joints •O ffers the opportunity for bricklayers to build the inner skin without the normal need to back up with brickwork •N o need for installation of bed joint reinforcement •T he Porotherm system is becoming increasingly popular with developers and main contractors who always need subcontractors who are familiar with the system •M ovement joints generally not required in walls less than 20 metres long
• Cleaner working environment • Blocks and components readily available through a national distribution network
