Presidents Message
by Mieke Caris
Hallo, Hoe gaat het? Een groet in het Nederlands. Not to miss out on the Dutch culture and specifically the language, I joined our club about 11 years ago. Living outside the Netherlands, I feel I have become more Dutch than ever. I have ‘wooden klompen’ in my house and due to our club auctions, skates and a beautiful stitched still life. Now, as the president of the Dutch Club Tampa Bay, I do my best to keep the language and culture alive for our members. My daughter, growing up in the US, can entertain some Dutch conversation. I hope to greet new members, those who are descendants from our original settlers in Florida, and those who want to start a business or life here. We conduct our meetings in English and Dutch. I first came to the US on an educational visit from the University of Twente in Enschede, (Netherlands.) I was looking at the implementation of computer technology in Education when I attended a conference lecture of Glenn G. Smith about ‘Do computer games have a positive influence on learning’? Email and online chat had just started in 1997, so we kept our conversations alive with the result of getting married in the Netherlands, in Deventer. We moved to New York where we both found jobs at universities. I worked as a director of a faculty center at a private university, while Glenn became an assistant professor at a state university. It was a fun and dynamic time. As a welcome surprise, I became pregnant with Carissa and at the same time Glenn accepted a position in Tampa, Florida. The move and being a mom changed our lives. We live in Tampa Palms, enjoying the verdant nature around us, the slower pace of life and new friends. Friendship and community provides a sense of belonging. With our Holland Club Tampa Bay, we meet in a physical space. Currently we have our Compton Park, which is a lovely setting with a playground for smaller kids and a nice patio for the cooler months. We also will meet ‘online,’ as we are planning to develop a larger presence in Facebook and reach out in other electronic ways. In the transition years, we still send out printed Newsletters and invitations to those who have requested this. Enjoy this newsletter made by Bert Wieringa who after 5 years is stepping down as our secretary to continue his career as a USATF certified top coach for distance runners. We will hope you all come to our general meeting, as we will vote for a new secretary, a vice president, our treasurer and more… Barbara is listed as our new secretary, Els will be our vice-president, continuing working for the club (Hooray). Mieke, next to being president, will take over Paula’s job as the hostess… and Chris will stay on as treasurer. We have a new position for our long time member Babs, as Mother Goose. She will be notified if any of us become sick or needs attention. Tot ziens! See you all at our next meeting! Mieke
Nieuwe Secretaris,

New Year’s kick-off was very well attended,
photo’s by Bert Wieringa
The New Year’s reception on Sunday, January 7 was well attended. Over 40 visitors enjoyed mouth watering ‘oliebollen’ (Gerard den Uyl) en appelflappen (Els Wiemken) as well as other food, champagne and different beverages. Members listened to king Willem Alexander’s new year speech followed by a lecture about traditional Dutch windmills by Peter Schreuder. And finally there was ample time to chat in Dutch, English and ‘Nederkaans’.
On Top of the World,
by Mieke Caris
This Christmas we flew out to Sacramento and paid a visit to Glenn’s family on the west coast. We rented a car and driving late at night we thought we could smell some smoke. It could have been our imagination as the California fires have died out by now. The next morning we woke up to a beautiful view of fields of almond trees, walnut trees and blue skies. We are in the agricultural rich valley of California! The trees are dormant now and are being pruned and shaped. The trees are native to Asia, but came to the USA in 1840. We enjoyed young and older members of the family who came to the house from Hawaii and other places in California. Glenn’s sister almost consulted a B&B manual with all the guests coming and going. The good thing is that the house is big enough to absorb us all. Wine tasting in the evening created interesting conversations about different grapes, the place of growth and the support for Napa valley, as they were hit by all the wild fires and whether self-driving cars will take off in a big way in America. A few days later we drove up North to Oregon to Grandma in Redmond. The drive becomes less flat and less agricultural when we reach the road North of Sacramento. On the west side we saw Mendocino National forest and up the road the beautiful Mt. Shasta area with the lakes. We stopped in Weed for the night……a typical American motel along the road with pleasant locals to tell you about the area. We see our first snow. The next day we go on to look around in Klamath National forest just over the border into Oregon. It seems that Bald eagles are the main attraction at this sheltered forest refuge, which is closed to most human activity. The majestic birds nest here during their winter migrations, with some pairs using the site for nesting. No, we did not see the birds. Driving along we had to utter a lot of ‘ohhh’, and ‘Ahhh’s’ because of the breathtaking landscape. We settled in to grandma’s place and went skiing on Mount Bachelor, a very nice mountain especially for beginners. I had a ski lift ticket attached to my ski jacket from December 31st, 1997 and now I bought one on December 31, 2017. I had not skied for 20 years. It went fine! It is true, like biking, once you learn this, you do not forget. Carissa had a few lessons. Being on ‘top of the world’ is always spectacular and going down takes all your concentration, and is a great work-out. Leaving from Portland airport we drive past Mount Hood. The upcoming traffic going onto the mountain on a Saturday morning was continuous. Since we live in Florida, it has been a while we needed to drive on icy roads and through heavy fog around the mountain. Dropping of a rental car at another location is expensive but we enjoyed the scenic landscape so much we think it was worth it. I was just in time back for our New Year wishes with oliebollen and sprinkling wine on January 7, 2018!
Els travels to Dubai & Abu Dhabi
by Els Wiemken
I went to Dubai in November, quite an experience. We flew Emirates airlines nonstop from Orlando (16 hrs). Shopping is a Must there with its 7 large shopping malls. Mall of the Emirates 3 stories, has an indoor ski slope and penguin exhibit and a gold bar vending machine. We visited the Emirate of Fujairah on the Indian Ocean and the oldest Mosque in UAE. Also visited Abu Dhabi, a more traditional Arab city wih its beautiful Grand Mosque and the new Louvre museum that just opened.
On top of the Burj Khalifi, 828 m high and it took just 77 sec. to get to the top –125th –floor.
My camel ride in the desert of Abu Dhabi
The oldest mosque In Al Badiyah, UAE The UAE was an amazing trip with so much opulence and so many different cultures.

Miami Beach - 26 februari - 12 april
Sinterklaas, feest voor jong en oud! St Nicolas (Sinterklaas) visited Holland Club Tampa Bay. Kids loved the old bishop and his 2 helpers (Piet 1 & Piet 2) who played a big role in handing out presents. Traditional food like 'green pie soup' and 'peper-noten' were in high demand. Great day for the Dutch community in Tampa Bay. Photo’s: Johanna Wieringa
