UPM’s $3.5bn pulp mill in Uruguay starts operations

First deliveries of pulp from UPM’s newlybuilt mill at Paso de los Toros in Uruguay were expected in May after the final operating authorisation had been received from the local authorities a month earlier.

The mill’s annual capacity to produce 2.1 million tons of eucalyptus pulp doubles UPM’s output and makes it one of the largest suppliers in the world. In addition to the pulp mill, the overall investment of US$3.47 billion includes a deep sea-port terminal in Montevideo, a new eucalyptus tree nursery and local investments in infrastructure and facilities.
