SYNOPSIS Mari Miyazawa’s sushi animation brings to life the adventures of a rice ball and her pet broccoli. (The 2017 Wisconsin Film Festival Shorter and Sweeter program featured Konigiri-Kun and the 2016 Wisconsin Film Festival featured Little Rice Balls.) While in awe of ninja’s, Konigiri-Kun disagrees with them when they simply try to steal the Sportsday medal. One has to earn it, not steal it!
MOVIE MATH ACTIVITY Stop motion animation uses models placed in a scene, which are moved tiny amounts, with an image being taken after each move. Then, they’re moved again, and another image is taken. Usually, there are 24 images (or frames) per second of animation we see on screen. Ask students to investigate this question in pairs: • Konigiri-Kun:
Sportsday is 5 minutes long. How many seconds is that? • If every second is made up of 24 separate images or frames, how many images would the animators have had to photograph to create the whole film?

Think pair and share what characters they see. Go back and ask them to check off all the characters to see if they missed any.

Task One This film has very little dialogue in it which allows the children to be creative in what the characters are saying to one another.

Show them this still of the film. Get them to think pair, share their ideas about what each character is saying. They could take turns in taking on the roles of each character and could act out what they would say. Take feedback and display their ideas on the interactive white board, for older classes and more able children they could write their ideas down to remind them when completing the task later.

Task Two This film subtly shows different emotions from both the characters. They find themselves thrown together but very quickly realize that the relationship is beneficial to both of them.
Ask the children to think back to how each character felt at different points during the film:
• The bear is surprised when the bird stays with him
• The bird is glad that the bear provides shelter, warmth safety from the weather
• The pair have lots of fun when the bird is bouncing on the bears stomach
• There is a mutual acceptance of each other the bear can’t sing but the bird can
• The bear is hurt when the bird leaves him • However, the bear is rescued and taken away by the birds
Some of these are quite complex emotions. Discuss these difference scenes with the children and encourage them to expand their emotional vocabulary. Use some stills to help them focus on specific emotions. The children can create graffiti boards with different emotions on them to accompany each still. This could be done in pairs, co-operative learning groups or individually.

SYNOPSIS The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales unfolds as
a play with three acts (“A Baby to Deliver,” “The Big, Bad Fox,” and “The Perfect Christmas”) that are all infused with the wit and sophisticated humor of Benjamin Renner and Jean Regnaud, co-animation director. In “A Baby to Deliver,” Rabbit, Duck, and their friend Pig are asked by Stork to return a human baby to its parents. In “The Big Bad Fox,” fox is persuaded by a wolf to steal a hen’s eggs. He plans to eat them when they hatch… but he’s in for a big surprise. In “The Perfect Christmas,” Rabbit and Duck believe they accidentally killed Santa Claus. They decide to take his place, delivering presents to everyone with very funny consequences. With beautiful hand-drawn 2-D animation, the three interlocking stories offer a sensitive and beautiful portrayal of family and the anxieties of modern life.
The film The Big Bad Fox is based on Benjamin Renner’s comic book of the same name. Renner’s Story
The story of the Big Bad Fox came in my head when I was 7 years old. I was visiting a barn and saw some eggs in an incubator. I wanted to see them hatch, but my father told me that the new born chicken would think I’m their mother if I happened to be the first thing they would see. At the time, I didn’t feel ready to be a single mom, but the anecdote stayed in my mind. Later I started to think what would have happened if a human had to raise little chickens. Should he teach them how to act as a chicken?

Benjamin Renner is the director of the short A Mouse’s Tale (08) and the feature Ernest & Celestine (12), which was nominated for an Academy Award. The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales (17) is his second feature as director, and is based on his comics of the same name.
Patrick Imbert is a French cartoonist who has worked as an animation director on the films The 3 Wise Men (03), Ernest & Celestine (12), and April and the Extraordinary World (15). The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales (17) is his feature directorial debut.

SYNOPSIS The Fourth Grade class of Madison’s Crestwood Elementary school brings an ancient Egyptian myth to charmingly irreverent life through hand-drawn block-print characters and an unforgettable original score created by Crestwood’s Fifth Grade class. Teacher Luke Bassuener and Crestwood students will lead a stop motion animation workshop along with the Madison Public Library for the Wisconsin Film Festival on Saturday, April 7 at 11:15 am at Union South. Crestwood’s 2017 Fourth Grade class won a 2017 Golden Badger Award at the Festival for their animated film, Daedelus and Icarus.

THE LEGEND OF ISIS AND OSIRIS From Ancient Egypt for Kids

Once upon a time, a long time ago when the earth was new and everything was just beginning, the earth was covered with water. An egg floated on the water, just one egg. When that egg hatched, Ra was born. Ra did not want to spend his time floating around, doing nothing, so he flew into the sky and became the sun.
Ra dried up much of the water and made the land. Ra was lonely, so he made a wife. He named her Nut. Ra made many gods and goddesses to keep him company. He put them all to work. His children were very busy running the world. Still, they took time out to have children, because children were glorious things to have! Soon, there were many gods and goddesses. Ra was the father or the grandfather or the great-grandfather of them all!
All children are glorious, but to Ra, one child was especially important. That child was his grandson, Osiris. Osiris had a brother named Set. Ra thought Set was okay, I suppose, but his favorite by far was Osiris. To show Osiris how much he was loved, Ra made Osiris the first Pharaoh of Egypt. Osiris married Isis, his one true love, and the king (Osiris) and queen (Isis) settled down quite happily with their son (prince) Horus.
Set was terribly jealous. Why should Osiris be named Pharaoh and not him? In a fit of anger, Set killed his brother Osiris, and chopped him into little pieces. He threw the pieces into the Nile River. Set was sure he would get away this murder. But you know how rumors spread. Isis soon heard what Set had done.
Isis managed to gather the pieces of her beloved Osiris. She brought these pieces to her good friend Anubis, the jackal-headed god. Anubis was very clever.
He managed to put the pieces of Osiris together again. But he did not have the power to bring him back to life, so that Osiris could retake his place beside his beloved Isis, and rule Egypt as king.
When the great Ra heard about it, he was furious. He gave Osiris a new job, an even better job. He made Osiris the god of the dead, which was the most important job of all. Osiris could rule over the land of the dead, and be dead himself. In fact, he would have to be dead to enter the land of the dead. So things worked out very well, or so Ra believed.

When the young prince Horus heard what his uncle Set had done, although he was still only a boy, he tracked down his uncle Set and murdered him.

Isis was grateful to her friend Anubis, and to her son Horus, and to her grandfather Ra. But nothing anyone could do would bring Osiris back to her. He would dwell forever in the land of the dead, and she would live forever in the land of the living. Isis knew that she would never see her beloved husband again.
In honor of the god Osiris, the kings (pharaohs) of Egypt carry a crook and a flail, the signs of Osiris. The crook especially became the sign of rulers. The crook looked a great deal like a snake and was made out of wood. They used wood because wood was scarce. That made it even more special.
From then on, and even today, once each year Isis travels to the riverbank. Remembering, and dreaming, tears fall from her eyes. That is why the Nile River rises each year, to bring life to everyone and everything along the Nile. When Isis cries, the Nile will rise! And that is a very important thing.
