Life beyond the classroom is rich, varied and rewarding. You have every opportunity to enhance your learning with wider activities, which are not only loads of fun, but also provide a boost to applications for university and employment.
Enrichment activities develop new interests, increase knowledge and skills, improve your self-confidence and provide a welcome respite from the pressure of passing exams.
TRIPS AT HOME AND ABROAD
Expand your horizons and learn more about how your skills may be used outside the UK.
COMPETITIONS
Become a contender in college-wide, regional or national competitions.
ANDERTON CENTRE RESIDENTIAL
A Level learners enjoyed a residential at the Anderton Centre where they got to know one another when Wigan students met Leigh students. The action packed trip took many out of their comfort zones, as they took on the ‘leap of faith’ on the high ropes. Students also got to try XL paddle boarding, tree climbing and archery, amongst other outdoor and teambuilding activities.
WORLDSKILLS UK GOLD AWARD FOR APPRENTICE PLASTERER
Apprentice plasterer Sam Dean scooped the Gold Award at the national finals of the WorldSkills UK plastering competition. The apprentice who gained employment with JJH Building Contractors, impressed the judges with his technical ability. Sam said: “It was a good experience, especially seeing all the other trades and their work. We had to showcase a bit of everything from running moulds, floating and skimming to beading up, and using casting plaster moulds and coving.” Sam was one of just six competitors to reach the final.
EXPERIENCE CLASSROOM
EXPLORING BARCELONA
Travel & Tourism and Applied Science students visited Barcelona. Highlights of the trip were seeing the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, visits to the beach and Hard Rock Café and for Science students the Barcelona Supercomputer Center.
WORLDSKILLS SQUAD SELECTION
After winning the Regional team award in last year’s Greater Manchester Skills Competition, T Level Health student, Millie Gallagher has been selected for the official WorldSkills UK squad, which means she will be part of the 18-month training programme. This puts her in with a great chance of competing against the rest of the world at WorldSkills Lyon 2024.
The former Lathom High School pupil will compete in the Health and Social Care category.
ICELANDIC WINTER WONDERLAND
The A Level trip to Iceland saw our students take in the sights of the capital, Reykjavik before going on a whale watching boat trip where they saw both humpback and minke whales. They also got time to have a relaxing soak in the famous Blue Lagoon.
The students visited the Southern coast where they saw the beautiful Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, before stepping foot on the Sólheimajökull Glacier.
SPORTS TEAMS IN EUROPE
Sports students and staff were delighted to see the return of the annual fortnight’s training camps with Benfica, Portugal and Catalans Dragons in France.
The trips saw our Rugby teams coaching more than 60 junior Catalans players. Alongside altitude training, wrestling, weights and ice baths, the rugby team cycled the coastal path to the beautiful town of Collioure.
Meanwhile, those on the Football Development programme took a tour of the Estadio de Luz, home to the Benfica team. Between training sessions and friendly games they managed to fit in a sightseeing trip of Lisbon.
MAKE SOME NOISE CHARITY CONCERT
Our Music students hosted a charity concert to raise funds for the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation.
The event was a huge success, with tickets selling out, to help raise more than £1,000 for the Foundation.
The concert, which took place at Robin Park Arena, featured the very best talent from the college’s music department, with a variety of bands and performers, who took centre stage to showcase their sounds to an enthusiastic audience.
The event was organized by Level 3 Music students from the College’s music department, who wanted to give back to their community and support the important work of the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation. The Foundation aims to improve the lives of people in Wigan and the surrounding areas, by promoting health, education, and social inclusion through sports and other activities.
“We’re thrilled with the success of the charity concert,” said Georgia Hattersley, one of the student organisers. “It’s amazing to see so many people come together to support such a great cause. We’re proud to have been a part of it.”
GM SKILLS COMPETITION SUCCESS
Our Catering & Hospitality team won the overall prize at this year’s Greater Manchester Colleges Skills Competition.
The college hosted the competition, with competitors from all the Greater Manchester further education colleges. We were delighted to gain some individual success too. Our learners came first in the Front of House category, Level 3 Professional Cookery and the Hospitality & Catering category.

ENHANCING OUR STUDENT EXPERIENCE NEW FOR 2024/25
CAVE / ESPORTS
One of our latest additions is a virtual reality space, the Cave (Cave Augmented Virtual Environment).
The shared immersive space goes beyond a virtual reality headset, allowing groups of learners to be immersed in a scene, or view 360 degree content together, using wall and floor projection.
You can become immersed in authentic workplace environments, such as a busy hospital ward. In addition, Health & Social Care learners could explore immersive and interactive 3D models of human anatomy.
Using 3D and motion tracking technology, the CAVE allows learners to move around a 3D landscape or model.
Computing or Engineering students may bring their own projects to life, experiencing their newly developed content, with wall and floor projection to fully immerse themselves in their own production.
A student leader takes on the responsibility of:
• Communicating
• Inspiring others
• Listening
• Resilience
• Spreading knowledge
• Teamwork
You can get involved with:
• Debates, making suggestions and sharing ideas
• Guidance and staff leadership support
• High profile guest speakers and events
• Mentor programmes
LEIGH COLLEGE EXPANSION OF ANIMAL MANAGEMENT
This new centre will include a scenario-based learning environment with industry-standard equipment that will be used to develop the skills needed in a variety of roles, such as: animal boarding, veterinary care, animal pet shop and aquatics centre.
The facility will include multi-model spaces where practical and theoretical aspects of the T Level course can be delivered holistically.
NEW CENTRE FOR PERFORMING ARTS
From September 2023 our Performing Arts students will benefit from a new industry standard facility.
The much loved School for the Arts building is to be demolished, providing the college with an opportunity to create a learning environment that can ensure that students have the technical skills of the future, but can also respond to the increases in applications.
As the largest provider of creative and performing arts courses in the borough, we are experiencing an upturn in the applications in the creative and performing sector and this reflects a national trend. Dance, acting, media and music students will all benefit from the specialist creative hub.
The facility will offer a brand new 130-seat theatre with retractable seating and production standard stage and lighting rigs, boasting the best immersive experience for learners and audiences. Dancers will have access to two new purpose built sprung floor studios. Music students will work in new soundproofed recording studios, practical classrooms and rehearsal spaces.
Multi-media suites, a TV studio with green screen and a new radio studio will ensure that students are working with the very latest technology.
College Principal, Anna Dawe said:
“We are looking forward to opening this new facility for our students. The facilities will not only ensure that our students are developing their talent and skills in the very best environment, but the spaces will be available for community use.”

WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT ?
Courses are designed with input from top employers, such as the BBC, Fujitsu and IBM. This means you will learn many of the key skills that these big organisations look for in their employees.
On completion you will have a wide range of options, including being fully prepared for work.
T Levels include more classroom study than apprenticeships, which means you can experience an industry while you continue your studies.
WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS AFTER ?
APPRENTICESHIPS
You may go on to a higher or degree apprenticeship at Level 4 or above, developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours you have learned studying at T Level.
EMPLOYMENT
T Levels are designed with industry, which means you will be ready for skilled work. When considering job applications, employers will easily identify not only your core and specialist skills, but also your workplace experience.
HIGHER EDUCATION
UCAS tariff points will be allocated to T Level results to help you access higher education.
You must achieve at least an overall T Level pass grade to earn UCAS points.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
• You will learn core theory, concepts and skills for an industry area.
• You will develop specialist skills and knowledge for an occupation or career.
• You will continue to develop English, maths and digital skills.
• You will take up an industry placement with an employer.
• Assessment is a mix of exams, formal written assessments, core competency assessment and observations, both in placement and at college.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
You need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4, including English and Maths, and in some cases another specific subject.
DO I NEED TO ARRANGE MY OWN WORK PLACEMENT?
We work with employers in each of the T Level subject areas to confirm placements. Alternatively, if you have your own links with an employer who has agreed to take you on placement for your T Level we are happy for you to carry out the placement with them.
We will support you with the costs of travel to your placement through a range of bus pass schemes. Your placement will be carried out in blocks or on a weekly basis, depending on the subject area you choose to study.
You can find out more about T Levels in the subject specific sections of this prospectus.
T Levels are an option following GCSEs and are a mix of classroom and work-based learning.
Work-focused alternatives are equivalent to three A Levels, studied over two years. They have been designed with employers to equip you with the knowledge and skills to meet the demands of industry.
You will spend approximately 80 per cent of your time in the classroom and 20 per cent at work in a placement.

“My work experience trip to Barcelona was really good. Along with sightseeing, we worked on a website aimed at students who wanted to travel and get an overview of the city. It was a fantastic experience.”
ANNUAL SHOWCASE
Each year, students from all creative disciplines showcase their final projects.
MEGAN GETS IN ON THE ACTION
Level 3 Photography student, Megan Causey won a national competition to gain a unique experience with Getty Images professional photographer Jan Kruger. Megan and Jan took their cameras to a match between Man United Women and Liverpool F.C. Women at Leigh Sports Village.
The former Cansfield High School pupil said: “It boosted my confidence and has changed my perspective of a brand new area of photography I want to explore. It was so action packed, I felt like I was a player on the pitch!”
Jan reviewed her pictures and responded: “A lot of pro photographers with years of experience struggle with fast action and keeping horizons level. I have no doubt with a bit more experience, Megan will find her own way of documenting sport, and definitely have a future in the industry.”
The opportunity came after students from our BTEC Level 3 Photography course worked on a project for The FA at last year’s Women’s Euros Finals recording local fans’ response in host towns and cities.

WORLDSKILLS UK GOLD AWARD FOR APPRENTICE PLASTERER
Apprentice plasterer Sam Dean scooped the Gold Award at the national finals of the Worldskills UK 2021 plastering competition.
He did his apprenticeship at IB Plastering and has since been employed full-time with JJH Building Contractors.
Sam said: “It was a good experience, especially seeing all the other trades and their work. I didn’t except to win but I guess the judges thought I was the best on the day. We had to showcase a bit of everything from running moulds, floating and skimming to beading up and using casting plaster moulds and coving.”
Sam was one of just six competitors to reach the final.
Sam’s college tutor, Michael Simm, added: “We are thrilled that Sam has achieved such a prestigious award for his plastering skills. He was up against tough competition from apprentices nationwide and has clearly shown the judges his highly developed precision skills. Well done Sam.”
Following in his footsteps is current Level 2 plastering apprentice, Kieran Roworth, who at the time of writing had reached the 2022 finals. The former Parklands High School pupil is hoping for more national award success to make it two in a row for the plastering department at the national finals in November.

SPORTING ACADEMIES
FOOTBALL
We provide benefits for male and female students, including a bespoke strength and conditioning programme and nutritional guidance to support development as players.
Students also benefit from four hours of professional coaching a week. There are also opportunities for sports students to carry out work placements as part of the Football Academy.
SPORTS LEADERSHIP
Our students work with local organisations, such as schools and charities to provide fully inclusive sports leadership activities. Their work with children and young people from primary and secondary schools, as well as those with special educational needs and disabilities, provides valuable experience for them to develop the skills to secure employment in the sports industry.
This year we are delighted to announce that our Sports department have achieved the Your School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2nd year running through the work carried out within the community by our Sports Leadership Academy.
RUGBY LEAGUE
The Academy provides opportunities for our students to progress towards the professional game, alongside achieving an academic qualification.
Students work alongside professional coaches and players to develop the physical, technical and tactical attributes to play at the highest level in Rugby League. The college rugby team (male and female) will be coached by Leigh Leopards Head of Youth Kieron Purtill. It will provide a link between the college team and the Professional Club Pathway. For women this would be Women’s Super League or Women’s Championship team, for the male partnership this would be links to the Academy or Reserve Grade programme.
