Early Years Families Schools Young People Community Behind the Music

WELCOME

A very warm welcome to our Summer 2017 Series. We have lots of exciting events to round off the season, and hope you find something that you, your friends and your family can all enjoy! For some of our youngest audiences, Chamber Tots explores the world of dinosaurs, minibeasts and bear hunts, and we invite families to dive down into the deep blue sea to join Jessie Maryon Davies and the Lawson Piano Trio for Search for the Starlight Squid. In our Community Programme, we are thrilled to welcome baritone Marcus Farnsworth and pianist James Baillieu for a Relaxed Concert, and our new choir for families living with dementia continues on Tuesday mornings. This year’s Young Producers present a very special concert featuring Zoë Martlew and Cato Langnes, and our Schools Concerts offer children from primary and SEN settings a chance to hear vocal ensemble Juice, as well as Trish Clowes and her jazz organ quartet! We hope you enjoy the series, and look forward to welcoming you to Wigmore Hall. Daisy Swift Head of Learning

As our second year of the Partner Schools Programme draws to a close, we look back on a year of innovative, inspiring projects created in partnership with children, teachers, schools and Music Education Hubs… … Year 1 children at Lansbury Lawrence Primary School in Tower Hamlets visited Mudchute Farm with music technology specialist Gawain Hewitt, and made a farmyard piece and graphic 3D score with recorded sounds from the farm. … Year 1 and 2 children at Flora Gardens Primary School in Hammersmith and Fulham created their own music and art in response to The Hive at Kew Gardens, a structure that encapsulates the story of the honey bee through an immersive sound and visual experience. … This term Year 4 and 5 children at Risley Avenue Primary School in Haringey will be working with a writer and musician to write a new piece inspired by Wigmore Hall, which will then be reimagined into dance and artworks by their fellow students. ... Years 2 – 6 at Harold Court Primary School in Havering have been working with internationally renowned music educationalist Paul Griffiths on a creative composition project linked to their curriculum topic.

Introduction to Music: Jazz

Wigmore Study Group: French Chamber Music

Alfred Brendel Lecture: On Playing Mozart

Led by Roy Stratford alongside saxophonist Katie Brown, this series explores the language of the music of jazz, its history, ethics and influence on twentieth-century symphonic music. Tackling questions such as ‘is jazz instinctive or learned?’, ‘what is improvisation and how do jazz musicians think about it?’, and ‘is all music really jazz?’, this series of talks unravels and explores this fascinating genre of music. Louis Armstrong said ‘if you have to ask what jazz is, you’ll never know… ’ let’s put that remark aside and do some digging! Series ticket price £30

Come and immerse yourself in the immensely rich world of French chamber music. From the mid-nineteenth century onwards, French composers produced a vast array of masterpieces within this genre, ranging in style from the Wagnerism of César Franck’s Piano Quintet, the Viennese inspiration of piano trios by Saint-Saëns, the modal harmonies of Fauré’s chamber music, the neo-classical elegance of works by Debussy and Ravel, and the wit and pathos of late woodwind sonatas by Poulenc, to the unique musical language of Olivier Messiaen in his Quatuor pour la fin du temps.

In his final lecture of the season, Alfred Brendel explores the life and works of Mozart. How was the composer perceived by his contemporaries? How literally does one need to take his notation? How do his few works in minor keys compare to the many in major, and his concertos to his sonatas? £20

These afternoons are hosted by composer Julian Philips with pianist Laura Roberts, alongside invited guest speakers and students from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Series ticket price £60, which includes 3 study sessions and a ticket for the evening concert by Ensemble intercontemporain on 20 June.

Join master pianist Alfred Brendel to explore these fascinating questions. £20 20
