For fives and over and their families we celebrate the annual Family Arts Festival with Ensemble 360’s latest musical story, Sir Scallywag and the Battle of Stinky Bottom, and A Knight’s Quest family day in partnership with The Wallace Collection. We also start a new year for Schools with concerts and workshops for Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1, Key Stage 3 and Special Educational Needs groups. Our Young People and Community programmes continue with Musical Portraits Band, a course for young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, a Relaxed Concert featuring the Leonore Piano Trio, and events for people living with dementia and their friends, families and carers. Take a look Behind the Music with our Study programme, which this series includes pre-concert interviews with our new Composer in Residence Helen Grime and Artist in Residence Alison Balsom, as well as a post-concert interview with Ian Bostridge and Sir Antonio Pappano. We also launch a special Schubert in English series which transforms the composer’s great song cycles with new English translations, and Sir András Schiff offers students his wealth of experience in a special evening masterclass.

In the Community…

Wigmore Hall Learning’s Associate Artists Ignite lead a range of creative music-making opportunities each year in community settings. These projects enable participants to engage in high quality music making; improvising and composing new music for performances both in the community and on the Wigmore Hall stage. Through work with adults from the Cardinal Hume Centre, participants facing a wide range of social and economic barriers are encouraged to explore and express themselves by creating music together, alongside professional musicians. Participants develop musical and communication skills through rhythmic, vocal and instrumental work, and by forming an ensemble. Community projects such as this form an integral part of the Wigmore Hall Learning programme, and allow people who may be unable to access opportunities at the Hall itself to engage with music making of quality and integrity.

Behind the Music Tuesday 20 September 3.00pm – 6.00pm Thursday 22 September 3.00pm – 6.00pm Wednesday 28 September 3.00pm – 6.00pm

Wigmore Study Group: Beethoven Piano Sonatas

One of the iconic landmarks of piano literature, the Beethoven Sonatas trace the immense musical and spiritual journey of his creative life. Whilst his own performances of them were largely confined to the elite aristocratic salons of Vienna, allowing him to disregard the commercial pressures of the day and write some of his most deeply personal music, Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas soon became central to concert life, and to wider domestic music making, presenting an endlessly fascinating interpretative challenge both to the enthusiastic amateur and to the greatest pianists of each generation. Come and explore Beethoven’s world in three afternoons hosted by composer Julian Philips with pianist Laura Roberts and student performers from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Series ticket price £60 including 3 study sessions and a ticket for the evening concert by Igor Levit on Wednesday 28 September.

She made her debut as a Page in Wagner’s Lohengrin in Munich in 1961. During a long and illustrious career, the mezzo-soprano has performed at all of the world’s leading opera houses and cultivated exceptional qualities as a Lieder singer. Schubert in English

Schubert’s songs are often considered to be some of the greatest music ever written. For many decades in Britain these works were regularly heard in their English translations, although in recent years there has been a shift back to performance in their original language. This autumn we explore the composer’s three great song cycles and transform them from their original German into new English translations by Jeremy Sams, inviting audiences to discover these special works, or revisit them in a new light.
