WIGMORE STUDY GROUP Wednesday 20, Friday 22 & Friday 29 October 3.00 pm – 6.00 pm

SCHUMANN SONG Tied to Gerald Finley’s Schumann recital on the 29 October, the first Wigmore Study Group of the 2010 season turns its attention to the songs of Robert Schumann and in particular his Heine Liederkreis Op 24. Dating from Schumann’s extraordinary year of song (1840), this remarkable cycle marks a high point in the development of Schumann’s song style: the subtle interweaving of voice and piano, a highly sophisticated response to text and a unique exploration of shifting emotional textures. Hosted by composer Julian Philips, the three afternoons will offer three approaches: a song masterclass with young recital artists, a performance-analysis and an investigation of the cultural and historical context in which this cycle was completed. Series ticket price £53 including 3 study sessions and a ticket for the evening concert on 29 October.

Behind the Music

ALFRED BRENDEL LECTURE RECITALS One of the 20th century’s great pianists, Alfred Brendel may have retired from concert-giving, but he returns to Wigmore Hall to give a series of three lecture recitals for its 110th anniversary season. His unique combination of wit, eloquence and musical experience has for many years been evident not only in his superlative performances, but in his deftly argued essays and his humorous, sometimes irreverent, poems. With this series Alfred Brendel returns before the public, presenting his latest thoughts, in both words and music. ‘ When you look at how [Schubert] develops the motifs in the late sonatas, you can see the direction in which he’s going. But like Mahler, he doesn’t give you a solid edifice, or a clear distance to the goal towards which he is steering’ Alfred Brendel
