Saturday Tours National Dairy Shrine

Dairy Shrine brings together all of those involved in the dairy industry who share a desire to preserve our dairy heritage and keep the dairy industry strong. Founded in 1949 by a small group of visionary dairy leaders, Dairy Shrine now has nearly 20,000 lifetime members that encompass virtually every facet of the dairy industry.

At the National Dairy Shrine Museum, you’ll see the rich history of dairy in Wisconsin and the United States. There’s something interesting for everyone; learn about the history of ice cream, see historic dairy equipment and check out photos of champion cows dating back nine decades. You’ll leave with a better understanding of why, for nearly 8,000 years, people have depended on the dairy cow for life-sustaining milk and a better quality of life.

Hoard’s Dairy Farm

The Hoard’s Dairyman Farm was originally purchased in 1899 by founder, W.D. Hoard. One main purpose for operating the farm is to keep all employees of the magazine aware of industry trends and on farm happenings.

From the original 100 acres located on the north edge of Fort Atkinson, the farm has grown to more than 800 acres of owned and rented cropland.

The herd includes both Guernseys and Jerseys. A portion of the milking herd is housed in a two-row, naturally ventilated freestall barn that was built in 2007. The cows are milking in a double-10 herringbone parlor that was also constructed in the same year.

In the summer of 2019, construction of a second freestall barn was started. The facility now houses four robots where a majority of the herd is milked. The herd averages 69 pounds of milk per day on three times per day milking with 3.5 percent protein and 4.5 butterfat.

In 2018, milk from the Guernsey cows was made into their own cheese, “Belaire.” This Port Salut-style cheese is similar to Muenster. There are number of other varieties of cheese under Hoard’s Creamery. To learn more visit www.hoardscreamery.com.
