INTRO

The Future of Manufacturing Over the last few years, there has been an explosion in innovation in new digital fabrication methods and machines. In the words of Neil Gershenfeld, the head of MIT's Centre for Bits and Atoms: !

“What has grown forward is a digital revolution in making things. It's cutting, grinding, lasers, plasmas, jets of water, wires, knives, bending pins, weaving, moulding, extruding, fusing and bonding. !

We believe that with the rise of new digital fabrication tools - ranging from personal 3D printers to metal folding robots - there is an opportunity to realise a more open, decentralised and participative model of production.

WIKIHOUSE

WikiHouse !

!

!

As an entry into the digital fabrication world, we launched WikiHouse in 2011 — an open source construction set for printing houses.

Our aim was to enable anyone to design, download, print and assemble a house with minimal formal skill.

These panels can then be automatically cut by CNC machines out of materials like structural plywood and assembled with ease — like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

!

!

As a proof of concept, we created a plugin for the popular SketchUp design tool that transforms a 3D model of a house into flat panels that are algorithmically laid out onto sheets.

WIKIFACTORY

WikiFactory Having experienced the design and collaboration challenges that open design and hardware projects face, we are now developing wikifactory.org An online platform that will enable anyone to create, modify and collaborate on 3D designs and open hardware projects through: •

a library of open source 3D designs,

an in-browser design tool,

a customisation tool,

and a community platform.

!

We will also be setting up physical spaces called WikiFactories around the world. These will provide people with access to a wide range of cutting-edge digital fabrication tools and act as innovation hubs for the rapidly growing global community.

WikiFactory will enable open design & hardware projects to collaborate as eectively as open source software projects.

WIKIPEDIA OF 3D DESIGNS

wikifactory.org will allow anyone to create, customise and collaborate on 3D designs Library of 3D Designs Blueprints of everything created by the community will be made accessible on our library of open source designs. !

Design tool Now that recent browsers support 3D graphics via WebGL, we’ll be able to integrate an easy-to-use, in-browser design tool to facilitate the creation of new designs. !

Customisation tool We’ll also make it extremely easy for people to customise aspects of designs — like dimensions and materials — by using intuitive controls like sliders and drop down menus.

COMMUNITY PLATFORM

The community platform on wikifactory.org draws inspiration from the successful methodologies from the open source software world

Live Group Chat Open source projects almost universally use IRC, a group chat system, to facilitate open group discussions. We are creating a web-based live chat system tailored to the needs of collaborative design.

News Aggregator Like Hacker News in the startup world, our content aggregator will make it easy to stay upto-date with the latest news about specific projects and topics, as well as organise shared articles, photos and videos from the community.

INNOVATION HUBS

WikiFactories will provide access to training & machines which, combined with wikifactory.org will help democratise design and production By providing access to a wide range of digital fabrication technologies such as 3D printers & scanners, CNC machines, laser cutters etc., WikiFactories will help bring together designers, technologists and entrepreneurs to collaborate on projects. !

We will showcase the latest in fabrication technologies, oer courses and display prototypes of community designs from wikifactory.org at various WikiFactories around the world. !

In doing so, we hope to not only cultivate the wider public’s interest in participative design, but to also provide a constant source of feedback to accompany the rapid prototyping of designs.
