E. Philosophy
Ourprimarygoalistothoughtfullyandpurposefullyguidestudentsinthecollege search,applicationandselectionprocess.Utilizingaseminarformat,individual meetingsandvariousothercounselingresources,wesupportourstudentsin researchingandidentifyingarangeofcollegeswellsuitedtotheirinterests,needsand
abilities.Itisimportanttonotethatthereisnosingular“right”collegeforastudent. Anumberofcollegeswillbewonderfulmatches,andourcollectivegoalistoidentify thatgroupof“goodfit”collegesforeachstudent.

Studentsareexpectedtoattendworkshopsforthegraduatingclassand individualsessionswiththeircollegecounselor
● Workshopsandseminarclassesforthegraduatingclasswilloccur duringthefirsthalfofthefalltrimester,anddateswillbeannounced priortothestartoftheschoolyear.Duringthesemeetings,important informationaboutthecollegeapplicationprocesswillbediscussed.
● SeniorsandPGsarerequiredtomeetwiththeircollegecounselorfor individualmeetingsaminimumofthreetimesduringthefalltrimester

● SeniorsandPGsarerequiredtomeetwithMs.Scottatleastonceby Sept.20todiscussapplicationprocedures,confirmteacher recommenders,reviewtranscriptsandothergraduatingclass requirements.
1. Workshops&CollegeCounselingMeetings2. Transcripts
StudentswhoattendedanotherhighschoolpriortoenrollingatWilbraham& MonsonAcademymustsubmitacomplete(andinthecaseofinternational students,translated)transcriptfromtheirprevioushighschooltotheCollege CounselingOfficebythestartoftheirGrade12orpostgraduateyear Forcollege applicationpurposes,transcriptswillbesubmittedonbehalfofWMAapplicants affirmatively;aspecificrequestfromastudenttosubmittheirtranscript(s)isnot required.Anytranscriptrequestsforpurposesnotassociatedwiththecollege applicationprocessmustbecoordinatedwiththeWMARegistrarbycompleting thetranscriptrequestformontheWMAwebsite.
3. CollegeApplicationLimit
Acomprehensivecollegesearchshouldyieldafinallistofnomorethan10 collegesoruniversities,andwestronglyrecommendastudentsubmitsno morethan10applications.Thismaximumnumberprovidesforabalancedand competitivelistwithoutbecomingcounterproductive.Becausestudentscan onlyattendonecollege,thispolicyencouragesstudentsandtheirfamiliesto thoughtfullyevaluateinstitutions,prioritizewhatismostimportantinthe collegesearch,andthenmakeinformeddecisionsaboutwhichcollegeswill offerthebestfit.It’simportanttonotethatapplyingtomorethan10schools canbeoverwhelmingandmaycontributetoaninordinatelyhighnumberof applicationsfromWMAtoaninstitution.Thismayadverselyaffectthe chancesofadmissionforallapplicants.
Ifastudentchoosestoapplytomorethan15schools,asurchargeof$25will beassessedforeachadditionalapplication.
4. CompletingCollegeApplications
● Studentsareresponsibleforcompletingtheirowncollegeapplications.
● Therearetwoprimarywaystoapplytocolleges:
○ Acollege'sownonlineapplication
○ TheCommonApplication:https://www.commonapp.org/
● ManycollegesaccepttheCommonApplication;however,itisthe student'sresponsibilitytofindoutiftheprospectivecollegeusesthe CommonApplicationorrequiresaspecificapplication.Ifacollegedoes usetheCommonApplication,school-specificsupplementalinformation mayalsoberequired,oftenincludinganadditionalessay Again,itisthe student'sresponsibilitytodetermineeachschool’sapplication requirements,includinganysupplement(s).
● All supporting documents including high school transcripts, teacher and counselor recommendation letters, and associated forms are sent to colleges and universities on the student’s behalf through SCOIR. In SCOIR, students do NOT need to request a transcript; moving a college to the Applying or Applied column of the My Colleges list is what will alert a counselor and Ms. Scott that a transcript and/or other documents are required
● Studentsmusthavetheirapplicationsreadytosubmitatleasttwoweeks beforethecollege'soruniversity’sofficialdeadline.Bemindfulthat deadlinesforspecificmajors(e.g.,nursing)andsomescholarship programsaresometimesearlierthanregulardeadlines.
Please note: Many application deadlines occur on Jan. 1 when WMA is on break. When this occurs, the student must be ready to apply two weeks before the beginning of WMA's vacation.
● Whenanapplicationisreadyforsubmission,thestudentmustnotify theircollegecounselorwhowillthenreviewthestudent’scompleted applicationindetailpriortoitssubmission.
● ThestudentwillthenscheduleameetingwithMs.Scott,whowill reviewandsubmitthestudent’stranscript,lettersofrecommendation andanyotherrequireddocumentselectronicallythrough SCOIR
● Ifacollegeoruniversitydoesnotacceptapplicationmaterials electronically,theCollegeCounselingOfficewillpackageall applicationmaterialsandmailthemtotheinstitution.
● Thestudentisresponsibleforpayingallapplicationfeesandany requiredpostage.Applicationfeescanbepaidonlineusingacreditor debitcard.
5. TeacherRecommendations
● Mostcollegesrequiretwoteacherrecommendationsfromteachers thestudenthadinGrade11orGrade12.
● Rarelyisthereaneedtosubmitmorethantwolettersof recommendationtoacollege.Studentsareresponsibleforcoordinating thesubmissionofanyexternalrecommendations.
● Studentsshouldconferwiththeircounselortodeterminewhich teacherswouldbebestsuitedtoserveasrecommenders.
● Atleastfourweekspriortothefirstapplicationdeadline,a studentisrequiredtopersonallyrequestarecommendationletter fromtheirteacherandtosubsequentlyemailMs.Scottwith confirmationthatarecommendationisforthcoming.That teacherwillthenbeassignedasarecommenderinthestudent’s SCOIR account.
● Aftertheteacheragreestowrite,thestudentwilladdtheteacherasa recommenderin SCOIR byclickingthe“ApplicationDocuments"tab oftheir“MyColleges”pageandselecting"Requesta Recommendation.”ThestudentwillthencompleteaTeacher RecommendationSurvey,accessedintheSurveyssectionbyclicking theMetab.
● Teacherswilluploadrecommendationlettersandformstoastudent’s SCOIRaccordingtothefollowingdeadlines:
● TheSecondarySchoolReport(SSR)iscompletedbythestudent's collegecounselorandwillbecompletedandsubmittedelectronically through SCOIR whenastudentapplies.
● Similartoteacherrecommendations,ifanycollegesdonotaccept supportingapplicationmaterialelectronically,thestudentmustgive theircollegecounselorahardcopyofanycollege-specificform.
InJanuary,theCollegeCounselingOfficesubmitsMidyearReports(MYR)to allcollegeswherestudentshaveactiveapplications.Thegradesusedforthese reportsarethefirsttrimester(T1).Again,studentsdoNOTneedtorequest transcriptsfortheMidyearReport.Transcriptsaresentaffirmativelytothe collegesontheircollegelist.
WithintwoweeksofCommencement,aFinalReportandafinaltranscriptare senttothecollegeoruniversitywherethestudenthasdepositedandwill matriculate.TranscriptsarealsosenttotheNCAAforthosestudentswhowill competeinDivisionIorIIathletics.StudentsdoNOTneedtorequestthese transcripts;theyaresentaffirmativelytotheinstitutions.

InthislightandincompliancewiththeNationalAssociationforCollege AdmissionCounseling’sStatementofPrinciplesofGoodPractice,weexpectand urgeourstudentstorespondhonestlywhenaskedtodisclosedisciplinary incidentsontheircollegeapplications.Inaddition,WMAmaydisclosethe followingdisciplinaryactionstocollegesorothersecondaryschools:(i)an applicant’sprobation,suspension,removal,dismissalorexpulsionresultingfrom theviolationofaMajorSchoolRuleand(ii)anyadversechangeinaleadership positionresultingfromdisciplinarymeasures.WMAwillalsoinformcolleges andothersecondaryschoolsaboutanymaterialchangeinthestudent’sacademic standingorenrollmentstatus,includingwithdrawaland/oramaterialchangein thestudent’scourseload.WMAmayreportinformationregardingdisciplineor changeinstatusevenafteranapplicationhasbeensubmittedorthestudenthas beenacceptedregardlessofwhetherthecollegeorothernextschoolspecifically requestssuchinformation.WMAencouragesstudentstoinformtheircollegesor otherschoolstowhichtheyhaveappliedofanysubsequentreportable disciplinaryactionsorchangeinstatusandwillgivestudentsareasonable opportunitytosharethisinformationbeforeWMAnotifiesthecollege(s)ornext school.
Ifareportablechangeoccursafterapplicationshavebeensubmitted,thestudent isrequiredtonotifycollegesoruniversitieswithintwoweeksofthedateofthe statuschange.Inreportingchanges,thestudentshouldconferwiththeircollege advisortoensurethattheeffectandwordingofthenotificationareappropriate.
Clearly,disciplinarymattersareofconcerntocollegesanduniversities;however, ourexperiencesuggeststhattheyunderstandthatyoungpeoplemakemistakes andlearnfromthem.Admissioncommitteesaregenerallymoreconcernedwith themannerinwhichstudentsrespondtoanydisciplinarymeasuresthantheactual transgression.Athoughtful,matureandarticulateresponsetoadiscipline infractioncanillustrateastudent’saccountabilityandgrowthasanindividual.
10. StandardizedTesting
● Studentsareresponsiblefordeterminingandunderstandingthe testingrequirementsforeachschooltowhichtheywillapply
● Althoughmanycollegesanduniversitieshaveimplemented test-optionalpolicies,manyinstitutionsstillrequireorwelcomethe SATortheACT.
● Studentsareresponsibleforsubmittingofficialstandardizedtestscores toeachschool.Studentssendofficialscoresthroughtheironline accountsdirectlyfromtheirindividualtestingagencyaccounts: CollegeBoard(https://www.collegeboard.org/),ACT (https://www.act.org/)andTOEFL-TestofEnglishasaForeign Language(https://www.ets.org/toefl).Note,collegeswillonlyaccept thosescoressubmittedelectronicallythroughstudentaccounts.

11. TypesofApplications
● EarlyDecision(ED):EarlyDecisionapplicationsarebindingand applicantsarerequiredtoenrollifaccepted Studentsmaynotapply EarlyDecisiontomorethanonecollege.IfastudentdoesapplyED,the collegeshouldbethestudent'sfirstchoice,andthedecisionmustbe discussedwiththeircollegecounselorandtheirfamilies.MostED deadlinesoccureitherNov.1orNov.15andstudentsaretypically notifiedofthecollege'sdecisioninmid-December.
● EarlyAction(EA):EarlyActionapplicationsarenotbinding Like EarlyDecision,mostEarlyActiondeadlinesareeitherNov.1orNov. 15andstudentsaretypicallynotifiedofthecollege'sdecisionin mid-December.StudentscanapplyEAtomorethanoneschool,unless theyapplyunderaRestrictedEarlyAction(REA)oranEarlyAction SingleChoiceprogram.
● RestrictedEarlyAction(REA)orEarlyActionSingleChoice: Anothernon-bindingapplicationplan,studentsapplyearly,typicallyby Nov.1or15,andarenotifiedbymid-December.Itisimportanttonote therestrictionunderthisprogramisthatastudentmaynotapplyEarly Decisiontoanyschool.
● RollingAdmissions:Thisisaprocessinwhichcollegesreviewa student'sapplicationassoonasitissubmittedandcommunicatean admissiondecisionshortlythereafter,typicallywithinthreeweeks. Studentscanoptimizetheirchancesofadmissionbyapplyingearlyin theprocess.
● PriorityandFastApplications:Somecollegeswilloffer accelerateddecisionstothosestudentswhoapplywithinacertain timeperiod.Applicationsreceivedonorbeforethespecified prioritydatewillbereviewedfirst,andstudentscanexpectan earlierdecision.Institutionsmayutilizethisprogramtobolsterthe applicantpoolandoftenenticeprospectiveapplicantswith preferentialconsiderationforadmission,housingandscholarships. Wegenerallydiscouragestudentsfromapplyingundersuchaplan, sobesuretodiscussanyinvitationstodosowithyourcounselor.
● RegularDecision:Thisisthemostcommonapplicationtype.Students applytocollegesaccordingtotheirregulardeadline,whichismost oftenJan.1or15.Studentsreceivedecisionsfromthecollegeinlate MarchorearlyApril.
12. DemonstratingInterest
Manycollegesanduniversitieswillconsiderastudent’slevelofinterestin theirinstitutionintheoveralladmissiondecision.Inshort,admissionoffices wanttoadmitqualifiedstudentswhowanttobepartoftheircommunities. Manyofficestrackapplicantinterestlevelsandplaceapremiumoncampus visits,perhapsinterviews,attendanceatregionalinformationsessionsor meetingwithacollegerepresentativeontheWMAcampus.Otherwaysto demonstrateinterestincludeinternetinquiries,phonecalls,communication
withcoaches,openingemailsfromcolleges,virtualtoursandinformation sessions,etc.
13. CollegeVisits
● Acampusvisitisoftenthemosteffectivetoolinhelpingstudents determineifaprospectivecollegeoruniversitymayalignwiththeir searchpreferencesor“fit”them.Visitscanalsobeanintegralwayof demonstratinginterestinaschool.Westronglyencouragestudentsand familiestovisitcampusduringthesummermonthsbeforetheirgrade12 year,ifnotbefore.Foreachvisit,besuretoregisterforatourand informationsessionviatheschool’sadmissionwebsite.
● Studentsareentitledtothreeseparatetrips,anyofwhichmayrequire multipledaysdependentuponthenumberofschoolsordistance traveled.
● Atleastthreedayspriortodeparture,aCollegeVisitRequestform andadetaileditineraryofthetriparerequiredforconsideration.The formprovidesthepertinentdetailsofthecollegevisit,includingdates oftravelandreturn,modeoftransportation,etc.,andmustbesigned bythestudent’sadvisor,coach,collegecounselor,theDeanof Studentsandeachofthestudent’steachers.Visitsthatextendschool breaks,includinglongweekends,maynotbeapproved.
● Studentswillbeexcusedfromclassestovisitcollegecampusesin theirgraduatingyear.Moststudentswillusetheirvisitdaysinthefall term;however,somewillreservetheirdaysforthewinterorspring.
○ Membersofthegraduatingclassmaybeexcusedfromupto fourdaysofschoolinthespringforplannedcollegevisitsto high-interestschoolsthathaveofferedadmission.
○ Notethatthefourdayscannotbeconsecutive.Onlytwodays maybeconsecutive.Asanexample,theconsecutivedays couldbeMondayandTuesday,orWednesdayandThursday, orFridayandMonday
○ Officialdocumentationconfirmingavisitisrequiredfrom eachschool.Collegeadmissionofficesprovidesaid documentationreadilyuponrequest,anditmustbesubmitted toMs.ChanintheDeansOfficethemorningafterreturningto campus.
○ Academicandathleticpoliciesremaininplaceandany absencesmustbeapprovedbyteachers,coachesandothers notedintheCollegeVisitRequestform.
○ AnycampusvisitsaresubjecttofinalapprovalfromtheDeans OfficeandCollegeCounselingandwillbelimitedtothose studentsingoodacademicandsocialstanding.
● Studentsshoulddiscusstheirvisitplanwiththeircollegecounselor.
● Campusvisitsformembersofthegrade11classwillbeconsideredon acase-by-casebasis.
14. CollegesVisitingWMA
Admissionrepresentativesfrommorethan80collegesanduniversitiesvisit WMAeachfall,eitherinpersonorvirtually,toconductinformationsessions. Thisisagoodopportunitytolearnmoreaboutaparticularinstitutionandto meetamemberoftheiradmissionteam.Interestedjuniorsandseniorsare welcometoattendiftheynotifytheirteacheradayinadvanceofanyclass absence.StudentscansignupforanysessionviaSCOIR.
15. Interviews
● On-CampusInterviews:Manyschools,inparticularsmallerliberal artscolleges,offerapplicantstheoptionofon-campusinterviews.If youareinterestedinpursuinganinterview,pleasediscussthiswith yourcounselor.TheCollegeCounselingofficeconductsinterview workshops,includingmockinterviews,foranyinterestedstudents.
● AlumniInterviews:Inlieuofandsometimesinadditiontoon-campus interviews,manyschoolsofferalumniinterviews.Someschoolsrequire alumniinterviewsaspartoftheapplicationprocess.Inthesecases,the admissionofficeorinterviewerwillcontacttheapplicantafterthe applicationhasbeensubmittedtoschedulethetimeandlocationofthe interview Atotherinstitutions,anapplicantcanrequestanalumni interviewifheorsheisunabletogettocampus.
● Withanyinterview,itisalwaysadvisabletofollowupwithathank younoteoremail.Besuretopersonalizeyouremailbyaddressing ittothepersonwithwhomyoumet.
Giventherisingcostofeducation,financesbecomeanincreasinglysignificant pieceofthecollegeplan.Parentsareencouragedtoopenlydiscusswithstudents theoverallfiscalrealities,whichcanincludefinancialaid.Therearetwo primarytypesoffinancialaidforundergraduatestudies:need-basedaidand merit-basedaid.
InOctoberofastudent’sgraduatingyearofhighschool,familiesofU.S. citizensandpermanentresidentscanapplyforfederalfinancialaidusingthe FAFSA(FreeApplicationforFederalStudentAid)availableat https://studentaid.gov/.Therearethreebasicareasoffederalstudentfinancial aid:grants,work-studyandloans.Grantsaregiftsanddonothavetoberepaid. Work-studyisstudentassistanceintheformofcollegeemploymenttooffset schoolingcosts.Loansenablestudentsandparentstoborrowfundstomeet educationalcosts;theyareinterest-bearingandtypicallyofferextendedpayment terms.

17. CollegeDecision
MostRegularDecisionorEarlyActionprogramsdonotrequirestudentsto acceptordeclineanofferofadmissionuntiltheMay1NationalCandidates ReplyDate,leavingampletimeforstudentstomakeinformeddecisions.When astudentdecidesinfavorofacollege,heorsheisrequiredtosubmitany necessaryenrollmentforms,alongwithasecuritydepositofaspecifiedamount.
