INTRODUCTION Leadership & Community L
eadership and Community … powerful words for sure, and ones that these days are often overused and can seem cliché at times. However overused they may be, over this past year, the interdependence of these two words have come to define the essence of what WMA stands for. One of the unique things about leadership is that it is not only a practical skill that can be exhibited by an individual, but it can also be embraced by a group of individuals acting on behalf of a team or an organization. It is rare for an organization to have truly exceptional leadership from an individual or a group, but here at WMA we are fortunate to have both. An exceptional individual leader in our Head of School Brian Easler and a phenomenal group of leaders in our Board of Trustees. Even before COVID-19 came to the attention of the United States, Brian was already looking forward, preparing the administration, the faculty and the students for how this would impact our community. As the 2020-2021 school year began, we were ready to do “whatever it takes'' to ensure the safety and continuity of our program. We entered the school year better prepared than many of our peer schools. We had built systems and put contingencies in place to guarantee that we would be able to deliver on the WMA experience regardless of the circumstances. Thanks to Brian’s exceptional leadership, we managed to successfully complete the school year with the majority of our students on campus and in class. The Board of Trustees also demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout the year. They gave of their time by meeting monthly via Zoom to ensure that they stayed informed and were ready to act quickly in response to a rapidly changing landscape. Perhaps more importantly, they led with their philanthropy and their investment in WMA. In the matter of several weeks, the Board raised more than $600,000 to be used as a matching challenge for the month of December. Their generosity and leadership inspired more than 450 gifts in a single month. It is not hyperbole to say that their leadership inspired the most successful fundraising campaign in the history of WMA. These two examples of incredible leadership - one by an individual and one by a group - demonstrate how powerful leadership is and how it can bring people together to support a cause greater than themselves. It was extraordinary leadership that inspired the WMA community from around the world to come together and invest in protecting the mission, the vision and the values that make the WMA experience so transformational. Thanks to their leadership and your generosity, we saw the true power of our community. Leadership and Community ... may be just words to many, but for me they are the essential elements that brought us through this past year. They are what keeps us moving forward; and they are what makes Wilbraham & Monson Academy such a unique and special place. Thank you for supporting WMA and being a part of this amazing community.

THE GIVING REPORT 2020-2021
BOARD MESSAGE Thank You for ‘positioning us for the bright future ahead’
I
n my Board Message for the inaugural edition of The Giving Report, I wrote about how, as a student, I took for granted most of the things in my school life: classes; friends; athletics; and meals. The idea that “school” would suddenly be anything other than what I had come to expect was … well, unimaginable. In normal school years, this kind of thinking is probably shared by most students at the Academy. But the 2020-2021 school year was most assuredly not normal. Suddenly, for WMA students on campus at least, sitting in class with one’s peers, enjoying a meal together, running team drills or simply chatting on the porch of Rich Hall became hard won victories; the resulting benefits of a COVID-19 response plan the success of which depended largely on their buy-in. WMA students stepped up because they understood that they had a chance to retain these school routines while classmates around the world - and many peers across the country - did not.
I also wrote that every time WMA has faced a challenge, our community of donors has risen to the task and carried the Academy forward. Once again that community proved itself deeply committed to the school’s success. Like our students, those listed in this report stepped up in the midst of unprecedented uncertainty and turmoil. They already knew what current students were just coming to understand: being on campus with peers and faculty is integral to the WMA experience. Nothing can replace it. Their generosity ensured WMA had the resources needed to keep students learning in person safely throughout the year while still moving forward on long-term projects like the iLab and the reintroduction of hockey. Last school year also saw the loss of two titans of the WMA community: Mr. S. Prestley Blake and Mr. Edward “Ned” Symes III '64W. Two men whose philanthropy guided us through challenging times, inspired others and whose leadership was consequential in bringing us to where we are today. We are pleased to share their stories with you in this edition of The Giving Report. I want to thank each and every one of our donors for keeping WMA strong during an extraordinary year and positioning us for the bright future ahead. To those who have not yet joined our community of donors, I ask “If not now, when?” There is more to do and every alumnus, parent and friend of WMA can make an impact. WMA means something to each of us. Honor that. Keep it strong. Sincerely,
Scott B. Jacobs ’75 Chair, Board of Trustees

FEATURE DONOR PROFILE S. Prestley Blake, 1914-2021 By Sean Valentine Director of Stewardship & Donor Relations
S
. Prestley Blake, a name well known by anyone associated with Wilbraham & Monson Academy, died at the age of 106 on Feb. 11, 2021. He was, and his wife Helen Davis Blake still is, a remarkable philanthropist unquestionably dedicated to causes in Western Massachusetts and to WMA specifically. The long list of lives the Blakes have positively impacted is impossible to overstate. In fact, their generosity frequently exceeded normal expectations into the realm of savior for some, including WMA. In 1989, the financial standing of WMA could have been termed dire. The Academy’s merger 18 years earlier had yet to deliver on the intended outcome: to take two weakened schools and create a single robust institution. Annual fundraising and tuition fees were barely meeting the budget, to say nothing of the rapidly compounding interest on $1.8 million in loans needed to keep the school afloat over the previous few years. The closure of the Academy - and thus the end of 185 years of educational history in the Pioneer Valley - was a very real possibility. It was during this critical year that Mr. Richard C. Malley, newly appointed as Head of School, sought an introduction to Mr. Blake. He got it by way of Eric W. Anderson, a WMA Trustee, alumni parent and then CFO of Friendly’s.
From left: Pres Blake, Helen Blake and former Head of School Richard C. Malley.
“I went into Mr. Blake’s office and told him the new Head wanted to meet him,” Mr. Anderson said of the co-founder of Friendly’s Ice Cream. “Pres said, ‘OK, bring him by.’ I reminded Pres that Mr. Malley was likely going to ask him for money, to which he answered, ‘Sure, well, bring him in all the same!’ During our meeting, Pres inquired of Malley how the school was doing financially, and upon being told of our difficulties, he sat back in his chair and said, ‘Let me think about that.’” A few days later, Mr. Blake contacted Mr. Malley with a proposal. If the school could raise or source $800,000, he would donate $1 million; the debt could be cleared and the debt service invested back into the school.

Mr. Blake’s vote of confidence in WMA was the force needed to nudge the Academy away from the precipice. His challenge sent a clear and powerful message: a jolt of lightning through alumni, parents and creditors alike. In a letter to Mr. Blake in August 1990, Mr. Malley wrote, “I don’t believe it is an exaggeration to say that without (you) we would not be opening this fall.” Within four years, through generous donations and renegotiation with banking institutions, Mr. Blake’s challenge was completed. WMA had passed through the most difficult financial period it had ever faced. Said current Head of School Brian P. Easler, “He literally saved the school.” WILBRAHAM & MONSON ACADEMY

THE GIVING REPORT 2020-2021
Certainly, this was Mr. Blake’s most impactful contribution to the Academy, but it was not his first and by no means was it his last. In the mid-1970s, he - along with Headmaster Francis M. Casey and WMA Trustees Richard G. Dooley and E. Carroll Stollenwerck - had been instrumental in soliciting The Wallace Foundation to help support the completion of what is now Wallace-Blake Dormitory. Mr. Blake had issued a smaller challenge during the Academy’s “New Decade Fund” in the early 1980s, and had already funded scholarships to the WMA Middle School by the time of his introduction to Mr. Malley.
“Most of his gifts were made in the form of a challenge,” Mr. Malley said. “He wanted to give, but he wanted to do so in a way that broadened the base and increased the level of support.” But, why? Mr. Blake was a member of the Northfield Mount Hermon Class of 1934, not the Academy’s. Neither of his parents attended Monson or Wilbraham academies. None of his children, cousins, nieces or nephews attended either. From left: Pres Blake, Blake Scholarship recipient Chelby J. Wakefield '09 and Helen Blake at Commencement in 2009. WILBRAHAM CREST
MONSON CREST
The simple answer, at least in the beginning, is proximity. Friendly’s corporate headquarters were based in Wilbraham, a town chosen for that purpose by Mr. Blake specifically because it was a warm, friendly community with good schools and high civic pride. Many students with family ties to the company passed through Rich Hall, and Friendly’s advertisements can be found in many Academy yearbooks. So supporting an institution like Wilbraham Academy fit with the ethos of community support that was a hallmark of the Blake success story. But it was the merger between Monson and Wilbraham academies in 1971, and the difficult years that followed, that really triggered Mr. Blake’s interest in WMA. “When Monson Academy closed, Pres learned how devastating it was to have school buildings in the center of the town lie unused,” Mr. Malley said. “He was determined that this would never happen to the town of Wilbraham, the home of Friendly's.” “Pres loved challenges and he loved projects,’’ Mr. Easler said. “WMA, struggling mightily as it was during that period, presented both. Pres played a pivotal role at a time when the Academy was facing enormous challenges.” With the completion of the million dollar challenge, it would not have been unreasonable for Mr. and Mrs. Blake to shift their philanthropic priorities elsewhere. Afterall, their gift had removed the likelihood that the school would close and its trajectory was now firmly on the rise. But this is not at all what happened. For more than 40 years, the Blakes continued to leave their mark on the Academy in ways large and small and always with a desire to help others in the WMA community recognize how they could make WMA stronger. “Like many of us who did not graduate from WMA, Pres and Helen simply fell in love with this school and this community and chose to make it a part of their life’s work together,” Mr. Easler said.

As Mr. Casey wrote for the dedication of Wallace-Blake Dormitory: “Yes, they have given handsomely of their wealth to us. Had they not, however, believed first, there would have been no reason for their gifts.”

“Realize that the only thing you can control in the world is your own thoughts. Realize that and make them happy. And whether it be random acts of kindness, volunteering for a good cause or being philanthropic, give back. It will improve your life as well as the lives of others.” - Helen Davis Blake, WMA Commencement Address, 1999 Rarely was there paperwork associated with the Blake’s donations. They gave their word and that’s all that mattered, but they also expected accountability in return. Mr. Blake had high standards, whether in business or as a philanthropist. “One day he went to the Friendly shop on Route 5 in Longmeadow,” former Head of School Rodney J. LaBrecque said. “On this day he said he was not treated in a ‘friendly’ manner. He told the manager who he was, that he was quite unhappy with the service, and that everyone in the store was fired as of that minute. They were not good representatives of what ‘Friendly’ meant!” Mr. Malley can sympathize. “Pres always spoke about ‘holding my feet to the fire,’” he said. “Accepting help is a tremendous responsibility, and the accountability that comes with it is special.” “He told us what we needed to hear, even when we didn’t want to hear it,” Mr. Easler said. “He inspired us to achieve our best, and he held us accountable when we fell short.” Mr. and Mrs. Blake never simply contributed money to WMA. Their interest in the school ran much deeper than that. Pres Blake with former Head of School Rodney LaBrecque
“Frequently the Heads Office phone would ring out of the blue because Pres had woken up with ‘an idea,’” Mr. Easler said. “He never stopped thinking about us. He was always excited to take calls or visits, to be a sounding board, and source of guidance, wisdom and inspiration.” Mr. Malley concurred: “He invested in our success. Time and again I received calls at home from Pres that started with, ‘Helen and I have been talking. Have you thought about …?’ Pres was a wonderful partner in the full sense of the word.” Not that Mr. Blake didn’t know how to have a little fun. “He liked parking his Rolls Royce in the Morrow House driveway when he visited the school,” Mr. LaBrecque said. “He would say to me that people driving by would be astonished that the Head of School drove a Rolls.”

Mr. Blake's father, Herbert P. Blake, had a saying: “The greatest satisfaction a parent can have is for his offspring to be a credit to himself, his family and his community.” It is impossible not to think that Mr. Blake’s father would be immensely pleased. “I continue to keep my feet to the fire by trying to live up to the ideals that were central to Pres, his father, Herbert Blake, and to Helen,” Mr. Malley said. “I will always be grateful for the honor of having known Pres Blake and will always remember the significance of his friendship,” Mr. Easler said. Today, Mrs. Blake continues their work with the Academy. On Oct. 29, 2021, the S. Prestley and Helen Davis Blake Reading Room was dedicated in the Griffin Athenaeum; the latest chapter in a story that is far from over. Wilbraham & Monson Academy is forever indebted to the generosity and commitment of S. Prestley Blake and Helen Davis Blake. We are stronger because of them. WMA is here because of them.

IN MEMORIAM PROFILE Edward ‘Ned’ Symes III ’64W Guidance and counsel helped distinguish the Academy By T. Mark Aimone P’22 Director of Advancement
“A giving spirit comes from being able to envision possibilities through your gift, not the limitations of how much you can give.” - Edward “Ned” Symes III ’64W
I
n May 2021, the Academy lost one of its most influential and consequential alumni, Edward “Ned” Symes III ’64W. Mr. Symes arrived at the Academy in 1962 from a small town in Delaware and began an experience that he credited with changing the course of his life. When he was a sophomore at his local high school, Mr. Symes approached his mother, with what she thought was another of his wild ideas, about attending a boarding school. It did not take him long to do some research, Mr. Symes knew this was the place for him. His parents must have felt the same way, as his younger brother Randy ’66W followed him to the Academy two years later. As a student at the Academy, Mr. Symes was well liked by his peers and teachers. His friend Wilber James ’64W remembers him as a leader in the classroom and on the playing field, who was admired by everyone in the class. “He was understated, soft spoken and yet strong of mind and body,’’ Mr. James said. “His kindness to his classmates was universal, and we all looked up to Ned and sought his friendship which he willingly shared. I can clearly visualize him with his smile and warmth as if it were just yesterday that we were together at Wilbraham. We were all lucky to have known Ned.” Another classmate, and perhaps his closest friend, Craig Meadows ’64W remembers: “(Ned) often came to my adjacent room on the first floor of Rich to discuss edits of the poetry being sent to his latest find. His studies never faltered from his other endeavors, and his poetry became quite good. Ned’s closest friends: Bob Stone, Chris Connell, Andy Weinstien and I benefited from his intelligence, honesty, good humor and loyalty.” After graduating, Mr. Symes spent a year at Bludell’s School in Tiverton, England, as an English Speaking Union fellow. He later matriculated to Dartmouth College and graduated with Honors in 1969. Mr. Symes always had a passion for public service and went on to earn his master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He spent his career in regional and urban planning serving in various city and state planning roles. In 1978, he and a partner started their own firm, Quadel Consulting. Over the course of three decades, they grew the company providing direct management, consulting and training to the housing industry and housing programs across the United States. Outside of his work, Mr. Symes gave his time and resources to many local organizations such as his church, The Nature Conservancy of Maryland/DC and The Chesapeake Bay Foundation. This spirit of giving also extended to the Academy. Over the years, he remained in close contact with the Academy and his friends from the Class of 1964. He and his wife, Merrielou, were frequent sponsors of alumni receptions and helped spread the word to generate interest in the Academy in the Washington, D.C., area.

THE GIVING REPORT 2020-2021
Many years later, Mr. Symes joined the Board of Trustees in February 1999 and served until June 2008. During his time on the Board, he served on the Buildings & Grounds Committee and the Capital Steering Committee. More important than the committees he served on was the enthusiasm, energy and passion that he brought to the Board. His vision and passion for what the Academy could be was infectious and inspired the other members of the Board. Former Head of School Rodney LaBrecque reflected on the leadership and service to the Academy of Mr. Symes. “It would be cliché to say Ned was completely devoted to the Academy, but it is a truism,’’ Mr. LaBrecque said. “(He) used his influence and position to make life better for others in both his business and service commitments. Ned’s guidance and counsel in my first years as Head of School were invaluable in helping set a course for the school that would distinguish the Academy from the myriad of other fine New England Prep Schools.” In 2002, Mr. Symes stepped forward with a gift of $350,000 to ignite the effort to renovate Greenhalgh Gymnasium. His generosity inspired other Board members and alumni to make stretch gifts to insure the success of the project. The energy and leadership turned a $350,000 gift into a $5 million project and not only accelerated the gym project, but led the way for all the improvements that followed. Former Head of School Rodney LeBrecque, left, and Ned Symes ’64W.
Current Board Chair Scott Jacobs ’75 recalls how important Mr. Symes was for the Academy at that moment: “At the time, the school was struggling with fundraising after an unsuccessful campaign. We were doing small projects here and there, but nothing significant. I was the new Chair of the Board and had no vision on how to reenergize the community. Ned approached me and offered to contribute $350,000 toward (a significant project) to get things moving. We decided we could convert his $350,000 gift into a $5 million gym expansion. Within 12 months we were settling on financing, a final design and a construction timeline. None of this would have happened without Ned’s leadership and commitment to WMA.” In addition to his generosity, Mr. Symes’ mother, Anne, established the Anne Symes Scholarship Fund in 2000. The fund provided financial assistance for students of color to attend the Academy. Mr. Symes always took a keen interest in the students who were awarded the scholarship. He gave one recipient a summer job at his company.
2019 Winners of the Trustees Cup
If one had asked Mr. Symes what his greatest contribution to the Academy was, he would probably have said the establishment of the Trustees Cup. While at Dartmouth, he was impressed by an award that was given out at the end of every year reflecting the values of sportsmanship, team spirit, leadership and academic achievement. Mr. Symes believed that these were the same values instilled in him by former Head of School Gray Mattern, and he wanted to bring a similar award to the Academy. In 2009, he established the Trustees Cup which is awarded annually to the most outstanding athletic team based on these core values. Following his time on the Board, Mr. Symes continued to play an active role in the Academy as a volunteer and a consistent support. His service to others also extended well beyond the Academy as he served many organizations within his community. He once said, “I like to get involved. Being a bench sitter just isn’t that much fun.” Today, Wilbraham & Monson Academy is a better, more dynamic school because Mr. Symes chose to step off the bench and give back to the place that meant so much to him.

“(Ned) has always shown his loyalty to Wilbraham and his friends throughout the years. He agreed to come on the Board when I was approaching my time to leave. His contributions were always thoughtful and generous.” - Craig Meadows ’64W Ned Symes ’64W with Craig Meadows ’64W, right.

PROFILE ON GIVING The Tanguays and The Dunphys
Scholarship, paying it forward keys to future opportunities By Molly McGill Director of Alumni Relations
H
annah (Tanguay) Dunphy ’10 was determined to attend Wilbraham & Monson Academy from a young age. Mrs. Dunphy and her family - parents Cheri and Gilles Tanguay and sister Sarah Tanguay ’11 - lived in Hampden, Massachusetts, and often drove through Wilbraham. “Hannah was drawn to it since she was as young as 8 years old,” Mrs. Tanguay said of her daughter. “She would stare at the buildings and ask ‘What is that place?’ when we drove by.” While familiar with the campus, the Tanguays did not know much about the independent school admissions process or whether it would be possible for their daughter to attend. Eventually, Mrs. Dunphy’s persistence brought the family to an open house event, where they learned about the financial aid and scholarships that would help the family support her dream of attending WMA. “(Sending Hannah and Sarah to WMA) was financially hard, but worth it,” Mr. Tanguay said. “I was comforted by the quality of the education they were getting, which I could tell from the workloads they brought home. It was especially clear when they applied to colleges because professors would comment on how well prepared they were.” “(Hannah and Sarah) have had a global education,’’ Mrs.Tanguay added. “They have a better understanding of cultures and people than we had at their age. The kids who leave this school know that they can live and work with people from all over, which is something we need now more than ever.” Mrs. Dunphy took advantage of all the Academy had to offer, from academics and athletics to chorus and travel opportunities. One of her most lasting memories from WMA is visiting South Korea for a summer trip guided by faculty members Michael Dziura and Stuart Whitcomb. Sarah Tanguay ’11
“I still love to travel,” Mrs. Dunphy said. “I don’t know that I would have the same appetite and appreciation for it if I hadn’t had these experiences through WMA.” As an alumna, Mrs. Dunphy remains entrenched in the independent school world, both as a volunteer for the WMA Atlas Fund and in her career, where she currently works as an alumnae and annual fund coordinator at Concord Academy. She is also busy pursuing a Master of Higher Education Administration from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. For her part, Ms. Tanguay did not initially share Mrs. Dunphy’s interest in attending WMA, preferring to stay in school with her friends. However, after attending a few Academy events with the family, Ms. Tanguay changed her mind and decided to apply. Just one year apart in school, the sisters, though close, had different learning styles. As Ms. Tanguay put it: “Hannah is very book smart. Everything seemed to come easy to her, and I wasn’t that way. I often felt like I was in her shadow.” At WMA, Ms. Tanguay was deeply impacted by how her teachers treated her as an individual. In particular, she remembers a conversation with English teacher Tim Harrington ’73 that has stuck with her to this day. “I was struggling in his class and not speaking up because I felt that I didn’t have much to contribute,’’ Ms. Tanguay said. “(Mr. Harrington) asked what was going on. He told me that I don’t need to be the smartest person in the room and that my ideas are valuable. I finally felt like my own person. Since then, in every college class or work meeting I can picture him encouraging me to share my ideas.”

THE GIVING REPORT 2020-2021
That advice has served Ms. Tanguay well in her career as a procurement specialist for Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies. She is pursuing an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The sisters were busy and active members of the WMA community. In addition to many extracurriculars, both frequently babysat for faculty families, and Mrs. Dunphy spent her summers on campus as a Beech Tree camp counselor. While the girls spent most of their waking hours on campus, Mr. and Mrs. Tanguay were comforted knowing that they were being closely watched by a caring community. “It takes a village and the village was here,” Mrs. Tanguay said. “Adults were all around and keeping an eye on them.” In fact, the “WMA village” was one of the girls’ favorite aspects of life at WMA. “There’s such diversity on campus with the student body and teachers coming from all different backgrounds,’’ Ms. Tanguay said. “Being able to have lunch or dinner with your teachers and learning about their lives is an experience that’s unique to prep schools.” Mrs. Tanguay, whose career is in public school education, was also active on campus through the Parents Association. “I have wonderful memories of co-chairing the Relay for Life event and decorating the Spa for Christmas,’’ she said. “We loved (attending) family dinners after awards nights and meeting the girls’ friends and their parents.’’ The family shares a deep appreciation for the scholarships that helped support their WMA experiences, and they all believe in the importance of paying it forward to future students. “I believe giving is a learned behavior,” Mrs. Dunphy said. “My parents always gave to the Annual Fund while we were students, and they sacrificed a lot so we could come here. I was fully aware that I was here thanks to the generosity of others. “(I continue to support WMA) because the school molds human beings. When you leave here, you’ve benefited holistically and are ready to take on the world with a broader mindset than other schools are able to provide. I would ask (alumni) to join me in paying it forward so that experience is available in perpetuity.” As for their hopes for the future of giving to WMA, the family's answers are similar and unsurprising scholarship. “There are so many children out there who deserve to come here and who would really benefit, but think they can’t afford it,’’ Mrs. Tanguay said. “I know there will always be people who will build buildings, and that’s wonderful. But, I would like to see scholarships built up so that deserving students can attend.” Ms. Tanguay added: “WMA provided us with so many opportunities to grow as a person. The only way to ensure those opportunities are available for future students is to pay it forward.”

That is the way Ming Chang ’89 describes his view on philanthropy. Mr. Chang remembers receiving A Better Chance Scholarship, which enabled him to attend Wilbraham & Monson Academy. "It was one singular event that helped shape my life," Mr. Chang said. Mr. Chang credits that and his experience at WMA as being one of the most impactful times in his life. "WMA defined me, which is why I support it,’’ Mr. Chang said. “Without WMA, I might not be who I am today.” Ming admitted he was not thrilled with the idea of attending WMA, as his entire life had been spent in Cleveland, Ohio. His twin sister Ping Wood ’89 and sister Ting Chang ’82 attended WMA, so the thought of not attending was not an option for Mr. Chang. His brother-in-law, Mrs. Wood’s husband, shared wise words about attending WMA, when he said, “You got to go because none of your friends received this opportunity.” Mr. Chang is grateful he did. Mr. Chang was a very involved student at WMA, playing sports and was a senior class officer. He has several fond memories of his time at the Academy, especially playing sports.
WMA Yearbook, 1989
Former faculty member and coach Phil Cardone played a role in Ming's passion for lacrosse. Cardone approached Ming about playing a spring sport and recommended lacrosse. “I was not the most athletic but loved playing lacrosse,” Mr. Chang said. The stories are endless from his playing days on the team, and Mr. Chang sent annual holiday cards to Coach Cardone. Mr. Chang recalled other teachers who helped him during his time, including Gale Giles, who was his dorm parent his first year. Mr. Giles was very influential as he helped guide him as a student. “Coach Don Nicholson ’79 was also very nice and engaging,” Mr. Chang said. Mr. Chang is thankful for his friend Todd Lamb '89 and his family for being like a second family. “They invited me into their home, a stranger, and treated me as family,’’ Mr. Chang said. “Every weekend I was at the Lamb residence.” Mr. Chang closed his consultant business two years ago and now works in manufacturing sales, which allows him more time with his family. The values and experience he learned at the Academy he continues to practice in his community of Akron, Ohio. He helps refugee families and coaches lacrosse for the local youth. Mr. Chang is also a board member at his local lacrosse club. He attended his 30th class reunion in 2019 and participated in the lacrosse alumni game. All of his joyous emotions from being a student came back during his reunion. “I am forever grateful for the Better Chance Scholarship because it led me to become a student and alumus at WMA,’’ Mr Chang said. “And in return, I show my generosity and thanks to WMA by giving back.”

PROFILE ON GIVING The Remaly Family
WMA ‘made a huge impact on who I am’ By Kellie Molander Director of Parent Programs
J
ames Remaly ’89 grew up in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and attended public middle school with what he stated was “without a lot of academic success.” His parents spoke with his English teacher, and she recommended they look into Wilbraham & Monson Academy. They visited, learned about the small class sizes, after-school activities and decided it would be a good fit for Mr. Remaly. He started at WMA in Grade 7. During his six years on campus, Mr. Remaly spoke of the importance of his time with the Riflery team. “I would say that many of my fondest memories were being a member of the Riflery team,’’ he said. “During one of our school vacations, my father was able to set up a training session with the Army Marksmanship unit at Fort Benning, Georgia. We ended up staying in one of the barracks and ate at the mess hall. It was a lot of fun and really helped our team improve. A few years later, we went to West Point and competed against their JV team. We had a great match and ended up beating them.’’ In the classroom, WMA faculty left an indelible impression on him. “There were so many great teachers that had an impact on me, but I remember Mr. Nicholson being a great teacher that didn’t just connect with students academically but also personally,’’ Mr. Remaly said. “I think Algebra II with Mr. Colgate was a turning point for me in math. Prior to his class I was an OK math student. I ended up getting a great grade in his class which prepared me to do well in precalculus the following year. I also took a computer programming class in Pascal that was extremely helpful because when I took it in college it was mostly a review for me.” Years later, the hobby of mountaineering led Mr. Remaly to Alaska to climb Denali and then to Argentina to climb Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of Asia. Soon after, a celebratory trip to Santiago, Chile, led to a chance meeting with a local who became his wife, Alicia. This life changing trip - which led to the start of their family with daughter Marily ’25 - is what brought him back full circle to WMA. Mrs. Remaly, a strong advocate of education, has worked for the last decade at the University of Massachusetts as the Associate Director of Assessment in the Office of Academic Planning and Assessment. She is new to the WMA Parents Association Board this year, and the Remalys have served the past two years on the WMA Parent Leadership Council. From left: Alicia Remaly, Marily Remaly ’25 and James Remaly ’89.
In the Office of Advancement, alumni and parents are asked what their favorite memory is about being a student or a parent during their tenure here. Mr. Remaly has the unique perspective to be able to answer both. When the Remalys share what they enjoy most about being WMA parents, there is a continuous theme between the time he spent here and the things they most appreciate about Marily’s time here. “I have always thought about how great it would be to send my child to WMA because of the experiences that I had here,’’ Mr. Remaly said. “Once Alicia and I moved back to town, just before Marily was born, Alicia was able to see for herself all of the great things I had been telling her about WMA. As Marily progressed through her early years in school, we noticed how much her education fluctuated from year to year. We thought the small class size, all of the great course offerings and after-school activities - as well as a student body made up of people from around the world - would be a great fit for Marily.” Marily attended WMA’s Middle School for three years, and she joined the Upper School in September. “The Middle School has provided us with so many great memories,’’ Mr. Remaly said. “My fondest memory has to be Middle School graduation (in May 2021). We were able to see these kids grow up so much from sixth grade to eighth grade, and it was great to see them move on to high school. The ceremony gave us, as parents, a better insight into who these kids are and what makes them tick. Marily ended up getting an award for eighth grade math, which made the evening even more special for us.”

The same reasons many years ago that Mr. Remaly’s family found success for him here at WMA are the same reasons today that they find Marily doing well. “The small classes give me the confidence to speak up and share my thoughts, and they also allow me not to be anxious about asking questions,’’ Marily said. Mr. and Mrs. Remaly’s positive experience here as parents is demonstrated when they discuss why they support the Atlas Fund. “I have always tried to donate financially to WMA because I think that the school made a huge impact on who I am as a person, more so than college,’’ Mr. Remaly said. “From learning time management skills to being a part of various teams and activities to being a part of a small community where people actually know who you are, really meant a lot. My wife, Alicia, and I donate because we see that those same qualities that I mentioned still ring true today. “There are so many great programs at WMA, and the future vision of the school is really exciting. I would really like to see the Riflery team continue. It gave me a place where I fit in. I think it is a great activity where kids that might not excel at more traditional sports have an opportunity to excel here and gain some confidence. At least that is what it did for me. “One thing that we have learned since we became WMA parents is that any donation, even $25, is important not only financially but the larger participation numbers are really important to the school. It shares with others in the community how great the programs here are and how as a parent community we can show our support.’’ The Remaly family's history here at WMA is still being written, and it will be exciting to see where Marily’s next four years take her. One thing is certain, if she follows in her dad’s footsteps she will always value the lessons both academic and personal that she takes with her from her time at the Academy.

HERITAGE SOCIETY PROFILE William L. Danforth ’56W
Effort and generosity given by loyal and active alumnus By Sean Valentine Director of Stewardship & Donor Relations
‘T
he epitome of a loyal and active alumnus is how former Alumni Director and current Director of Athletics Don Nicholson ’79 referred to William L. “Bill” Danforth '56W. Mr. Nicholson met with Mr. Danforth a few months before Mr. Danforth’s 50th Reunion, and his description was apt. In the years since his graduation, Mr. Danforth remained intensely devoted to the Academy: attending alumni events; hosting Heads of School and alumni staff; organizing and connecting his classmates; and consistently supporting WMA for more than 20 years. Mr. Danforth died in April 2019, saddening all who had the good fortune to know him. However, unbenounced to the Academy, Mr. Danforth had ensured there was one final act in his alumni story: a bequest from his estate of $250,000 to be added to the Academy’s endowment and aid his beloved school in perpetuity. Mr. Danforth grew up not far from the Academy on Mountain Road in Wilbraham, Massachusetts. A good portion of his family’s farm is now conservation land. A descendant of Pacific coast whaling captains and related to the Danforth Pewter family of Vermont, his local ties ran deep. Mr. Danforth was the highest ranking scholar in his class each year at WMA, while playing three varsity sports plus running track for Mr. Phil Shaw. His brother Philip Danforth ’60W followed him to the Academy where Phil became captain of the varsity track team, breaking four Academy records, and becoming a record holder in the 440 at UMass. Brother John Danforth was in the first graduating class of Minnechaug Regional High School, and held the 440 record at Wake Forest University for 18 years. ”Bill set a high bar academically and athletically for his brothers,” says John. “We owe our love of athletics to Bill and our Dad.” Following graduation, Mr. Danforth was awarded a full NROTC scholarship to attend Dartmouth College, after which he spent 22 years in the Navy as a navigator, meteorologist systems director and comptroller while bouncing around the world with his wife and daughter. After retiring as a Lt. Commander, Mr. Danforth settled in Ventura, California, and went to work for the city as a planner and IT specialist before he retired again in 2006.
From left, Bill Danforth ‘56W, Phil Danforth '60W and Bob Whyte '55W.
Giving back was always of prime concern for Mr. Danforth. In Ventura, he volunteered and served on the Board of Directors of "Pier Into the Future," a civic group that raised funds to maintain the historic Ventura Pier. He became enamored with distance walking, starting a club in his local area and walking marathons to support the likes of the Susan G. Komen Cancer Center and the Jimmy Fund. Sometimes he walked as much as 60 miles over three days. In addition to his annual support of the Academy, Mr. Danforth was the organizational force behind the Roger Lincoln Memorial Garden - a contemplative spot on campus adjacent to the Middle School and overlooking Crystal Pond. It was funded by members of the Class of 1956, with him as the lead donor.
