Inspiring Adventures in the Wild Places of Scotland

Wi l d e r n e s s Scot l a n d

2013

Welcome to our Wilderness “A superb trip from start to finish, this was potentially a once-in-alifetime adventure and we couldn’t have been happier with the experience.” - Joe Crookston It is with great fondness that I remember our first ever clients. In our makeshift home office, there was an air of total excitement and a certain measure of disbelief that someone was prepared to part with their hard-earned cash to come on holiday with us! To be honest, I felt like giving each of them a hug. Over a decade on and this passion for Scotland’s wild places remains. While we now have a proper office and even enough people to field a shinty team, our

motivation to provide inspiring active and naturebased travel experiences is as strong as ever. With more than 99% of you saying that you would recommend us to a friend, it’s not only great to learn we are doing things right but also hugely uplifting to hear your personal stories like Joe’s experience in the Outer Hebrides. In 2013, we have over 45 itineraries and 150 trips for you to choose from. And to make life easier, this year we have taken an innovative step and introduced Guaranteed Departures with most trips being confirmed with just two travellers. If my annual family holiday is anything to go by, we know that there is already a huge amount of uncertainty in the planning

process. We hope this change brings peace of mind and a reassurance that when you book, your trip is guaranteed to run. For many of you returning to the Highlands and Islands in 2013, we look forward to seeing you again. For those who have thought about visiting but have never quite made the trip, we hope this brochure persuades you to take the high road and experience one of the last great wilderness regions of Europe. Best wishes

Paul and the Team at Wilderness Scotland

Perhaps it’s the range of trails, from flowing singletrack to rocky and challenging mountain passes to mellow forest fire-road, that makes this such a favourite. Possibly it’s the Scottish hospitality, with our range of hand-picked local guesthouses and restaurants. Or, maybe it’s the sheer joy of the journey as you flow through some of Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes. Relax and enjoy the ride with our first class guiding and vehicle support, 3*- 4* accommodation and fantastic buffet lunches and snacks throughout. Guaranteed to leave you muddy and smiling.

WILDERNESS SCOTLAND

Wildlife Scotland is home to a fascinating array of wildlife both on land and in the seas surrounding our winding coastline. Thanks to the extensive local knowledge built up by our team over the years, we are now offering some very special trips to experience what Scotland’s wildlife has to offer. Led by our expert guides, you’ll seek out species such as dolphins, red deer, golden eagles and even the Scottish wildcat as you explore Scotland’s wild places. And while you will visit a hide or two, most of the wildlife will be encountered as you enjoy activities such as boat trips, walks and even some sea kayaking. All activities will be conducted at an easy pace, so are suitable for everyone to enjoy.

Our Guides and Equipment

Scottish Wildlife Facts

Our Wildlife trip guides are all fully qualified Leaders in each discipline or activity that you will be doing. They also have lots of experience and enthusiasm to maximize wildlife experiences in each local area.

The Scottish Highlands is the only part of mainland Britain with red squirrels but no grey squirrels. Elsewhere, red squirrel numbers have crashed due to competition with the larger dominant grey squirrel. The Gaelic for wildcat is ‘cat fiadhaich’, the phonetic pronunciation is ‘kaht FEE-uh-ich’

The habitats we explore We visit a variety of Scottish landscapes in search of our famous creatures. From the intricate west coast full of islands and wiggling coastline, to the mountainous West Highlands and ancient forests of the Cairngorms National Park. But there’s only one place where we’ll see old Nessie.

Wildcats mate in the depths of winter. Perhaps that’s why they’re so cool! The kittens are born about 9 weeks later and weigh in at just 120-165g – about the same as 3 chocolate bars. Bottlenose dolphins co-operate among each other to find food. To do this, they work in teams to optimize the effort of hunting.

Peter Cairns

They also co-operate for calf raising, when usually one dolphin helps the mother to take care of the calves, very much like a midwife.

Open Canoeing The canoe has been a trusty travel partner for thousands of years. Without getting too sentimental about it, canoes offer a peaceful, efficient way to move around in wild places. Our canoe trips typically involve wild camping in remote locations. Thanks to ample storage and space, your comfort and dining experience will still be reliably top notch! Canoeing is a wonderful past-time, and our range of trips offer a unique opportunity to explore the Scottish Highlands’ most dramatic locations.

Our Guides and Equipment

Which trip is for me?

Our Canoe guides are all qualified by the British Canoe Union (BCU) as Level 3 Canoe Coach and/or BCU 5 Star Canoe Leader. Apart from their paddle skills, they can also cook some fantastic meals to nourish after a day on the water.

Moderate/Moderate Plus These trips require a reasonable level of fitness to be able to paddle for six days in a row with occasional carries on moderate plus trips. Most likely to say: “I like camping out on expeditions with great food but it’s the journey that really makes it.”

We provide high quality canoeing equipment (canoes, paddles, buoyancy aids, kneeling pads) and group camping equipment including tents, cooking and eating utensils, waterproof barrels, maps, first aid kit and group shelter.

A match made in Scotland

Challenging We combine canoeing with hill walks, portages and wild camping to get you deep into genuine wilderness locations. Most likely to say: “I love the sense of escape and I’m not afraid to do some hard work to feel it.”

With over 30,000 fresh water lochs and even more great rivers, canoeing and Scotland make a fantastic couple. We choose our routes based on the paddling experience they offer and the beautiful wild places that they can deliver you to.

WILDERNESS SCOTLAND | HOSPITALITY

A Very Warm Welcome Over the last decade we have seen an accommodation and food revolution in Scotland. The clichéd Highland Hotel and deep-fried mars bars (as good as they were for some of us!) are now a distant memory. Throughout the country you can find some fantastic places to stay and eat, and we are delighted that many of them feature on the trips we offer across the Highlands and Islands. Most of our holidays are based in small hotels or guesthouses which have been carefully selected as the best of their kind in that area. They are locally owned, offering authentic comfort, where a warm Highland welcome is assured. Meals will be freshly prepared using the finest local produce to offer a true taste of Scotland.

“The food was superb – all meals without exception. The team at Doune is lovely and made us feel so welcome and at home. Great seafood, everything beautifully presented. Dinners together were a real highlight of the day.“ Dominic Batten, Wilderness Walking, The Knoydart Peninsula 2012

Sailing Sail away to the islands. Come aboard one of our sailing adventures to explore the wonders of the Scottish west coast. We work in partnership with a number of skippers of various boats, from classic wooden yachts to fast, modern ex-racers. Each Skipper and crew are highly qualified and experienced in offering a first class experience in terms of the sailing, local area and cuisine. Some of our sailing trips also include guided walking ashore on the islands we visit, which is a great way to combine the sailing with wild and wonderful treks through dazzling island landscapes.

Our Guides and Equipment

Which trip is for me?

We work with a variety of yachts but each of them offer a high level of seafaring ability, safety and comfort. Each of our skippers are commercially endorsed Yachtmasters with many years of experience in these waters.

The conditions will be varied from relaxing sailing in sheltered waters to some more challenging longer passages. Our Sailing and Walking holidays are based aboard the yacht Eda Frandsen. The yacht is a 70 year old traditional wooden gaff cutter, and everyone on board is required to lend a hand hauling sails up and with other tasks although no experience is necessary.

We can provide all safety and wet weather gear plus suntan lotion.

These trips include a range of walks throughout the week, from short lowland rambles to longer peak ascents.

Cruising the west coast Blessed with a huge variety of landscapes, from sheer rocky cliffs to infinite white sandy beaches, there’s so much to explore. Wildlife abounds. Our previous trips have been lucky enough to enjoy huge pods of dolphins leaping around the boat, along with orca, basking shark and minke whale sightings, not to mention, the vast variety of seabirds and wildlife ashore such as red deer, seals and wild goats.

Conditions can vary and some of the routes will involve ascents of up to 2000ft / 600m. You’ll need a good level of fitness for these hikes, although if you prefer, you can opt out and relax on deck. Most likely to say: “I’m happy to go where the wind takes me, and if it looks good ashore, I love to explore.”

FEATURED TRIP | WILDERNESS SCOTLAND INTERNATIONAL

Trekking in Bhutan Highlights Our trip to Bhutan offers an in-depth experience of this fascinating country, combining two different treks with a diverse insight into the country’s culture. We’ll take you through remote villages and spectacular landscapes offering a real cultural immersion and understanding of the warm local people and their way of life.

Get off the beaten track with Tim Francis, UK qualified Mountain Leader, on this trekking trip to Bhutan Experience Himalayan wilderness on arguably the best short trek in Bhutan. Exploration of the Paro, Thimphu and Bumthang Valleys, including the Bumthang Tsechu.

Colin Prior

We first travel to the east of the country, visiting Punakha and Trongsa before we begin a 3-day trek through the Bumthang Valleys. We then move west to Thimphu, travelling through lower valleys dominated by striking dzongs, or monasteries – visually spectacular buildings and truly incredible places to visit. The final 3-day trek is an absolute gem. As its pioneers, we had the honour of naming it. The Juniper Trail is now considered by local guides to be the best short trek in Bhutan.

“We had a marvelous time and everything worked to perfection. There was always someone to meet us at airports, hotels, etc which is always a worry when you’re travelling around so much. It all worked seamlessly so thank you for all the hard work on your part. It was wonderful to walk through forests and along ridges without seeing a soul. We were so impressed by the kindness and friendliness of the Bhutanese people.“ Michael Leeming, England

As part of our ongoing training programme, our office team regularly joins trips to experience them first-hand. Between us, we’ve experience of every trip we offer throughout the Highlands and Islands. Equally important to the technical skills of our guiding team is their knowledge of culture, history and wildlife. Combine this with a sense of humour, they will ensure that clients of all ages and abilities enjoy a trip to remember. Each of them is qualified through the National Governing Body relevant to the activities they lead (e.g. Mountain Leader Training UK or the British Canoe Union). Your guide will hold the requisite qualifications for all guided activities included in your holiday. All our guides are trained in and follow Leave No Trace principles, keeping our impacts to an absolute minimum while enjoying Scotland’s wild beauty. Far beyond this, however, their passion for Scotland’s wild places sets them a cut above the rest. Professional and helpful, they look forward to showing you around the Highlands and sharing their vast knowledge and experience with you.

OUR TEAM | WILDERNESS SCOTLAND

Myles Farnbank Myles is our Director of Training as well as a very active part of the guiding team. He has been sharing the wonders of nature and our relationship with wildlife and wild places for over 25 years.

Kirsty Chuchla Kirsty loves showing off her home country. She’s working towards her International Mountain Leader qualification but more importantly has mastered the one-legged for one-minute challenge with her eyes closed. (It’s harder than it sounds!).

Colin Prior Colin Prior is one of the UK’s most respected landscape photographers. The Scottish Highlands have shaped his passion for the outdoors. He leads photography workshops all over the world and offers a relaxed and friendly teaching style.

Tim Francis Tim is a highly qualified mountain bike and walking guide who works with us worldwide. We must mention his gift for music. Have you met anyone who can play the trumpet with their bare hands? No? Well, you haven’t met Tim then.

Biscuit Our very own mononymous guide, Biscuit, is renowned for his laid-back style and cracking sense of humour. He is often found with a paddle in his hands or bike between his legs. Biscuit is a natural with kids and leads many of our family adventures.

Mark Cox Mark guides a variety of trips and activities for us, always seeking out new places and features to share with our clients. He has lived and worked in Scotland for over 20 years and loves to share his favourite places with our guests.

Craig Tweedie Craig has worked all over the world but has decided his home country of Scotland offers the most exciting places to explore. He has devoted a lot of time to youth outdoor education but is happy guiding folks of all ages.

Jeremy Martin A native New Zealander, Jeremy has been guiding in Scotland for many years. His paddle skills and endurance on a bike are legendary, but its his sunny, go-lucky personality and relentless enthusiasm that makes him such a great guide.

John Ormiston John brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his love for the Scottish wilderness. He also has a background in geology, which makes him a great person to explain the landscape around us.

Carol Lang A sea kayak coach with a tonne of paddle experience. Carol shares her love of the water and Scottish coastline with an infectious enthusiasm. She’s a great storyteller with a deep knowledge of the sea and maritime history.

Malcolm O’Reilly Malcolm’s love for nature and wildlife began at an early age. He has a degree in zoology and has a wealth of natural knowledge and outdoor skills. But if you’ve ever seen him make a ptarmigan from a paper napkin then the rest fades into insignificance.

Howard Jeffs Not only one of the world’s most respected sea kayak pioneers, authors and designers, Howard also guides summer and winter walking and climbing. He has trained and guided all over the world so rest assured you will be in very safe hands!
