The Kyogle area is not only the Gateway to several World Heritage-listed national parks and home to the largest extent of sub-tropical rainforest in Australia — it has also emerged as a premiere destination for adventure tourism and nature connection experiences. WORDS & IMAGES BY PAUL DALEY
The secret is out! Just 60km west of the most easterly point on the Australian mainland (Byron Bay), away from the hustle and bustle of the coastal frenzy, Kyogle is the gateway to a diverse landscape of forested mountains, open valleys, wild rivers, rolling hills and quiet back roads that are ideal for a range of multi-day eco-adventure experiences. Let’s explore three of the best ways to immerse yourself fully in these landscapes — riding, paddling and walking.
8
RIDING BIKEPACKING, CYCLE TOURING & MOUNTAIN BIKING
There is nothing quite like the feeling of riding your bike — all loaded up and fully self-supported, with the sweet taste of fresh country air — off into the back roads of Kyogle. Some of the locals have been mapping rides for decades, everything from short, family-friendly half day circuits, to multi-day ‘Bikepacking’ experiences that take you right up to the head waters of the mighty Clarence River. The ‘100km in One Day’ loop from Kyogle up into the Border Ranges is considered to be ‘the ultimate test of your strength as a rider’ (unless you’ve got an E-bike which is an entirely acceptable option making these steep ascents more accessible for everyone). Riding through the misty rainforest, along a 23-million-year-old extinct volcano, watching the first light that
EXPERIENCE reaches the Australian mainland filtering through the canopy is an experience that words can’t convey. If you’re into downhill mountain biking, the Kyogle Mountain Bike Forest is situated in Boorabee State Forest, about 5km from the Kyogle township. If you have questions about local Bikepacking routes email greg@daleysfruit.com.au
PADDLING CANOEING & PADDLE BOARDING
The western section of the Kyogle local government area (LGA) is considered to be truly ‘wild river country’. The Clarence River Wilderness Lodge is your point of entry for the headwaters of the mighty Clarence River. From the south you’ll pass through the little villages of Bonalbo or Tabulum, and from the north you’ll travel through Woodenbong and Urbenville. This is a family-friendly option to base yourself at the fully off-grid wilderness lodge, where they have a range of cabins, huts and camping options as well as canoeing and stand-up paddle boarding. This wild part of the world is also a good starting point for a multi-day canoeing adventure — get in touch with JOIN (Journey Outdoors In Nature) who facilitate guided canoeing experiences. contact laura@journeyoutdoorsinnature. com.au or steve@clarenceriver.com
(the local word for koala). To the north, the Border Trail walks are some of the most epic multi-day deep nature connection experiences on the east coast of Australia. The Stinson Walk takes you from the Border Ranges National Park, deep into the Lost World Wilderness, across the NSW/QLD border and along an ancient volcanic crater cloaked in Antarctic Beech rainforest. Eventually you will reach the site of the 1930’s infamous Stinson plane crash. Make sure you have an experienced bushwalker with you as this trail is not maintained on the NSW side and a compass and All Trails App are essential for safe navigation. Another local classic is the Border Trail from Lions Road to Mount Lindsay, a three-day walk that follows the NSW/ QLD border fence. On the southern side of the border is some of the last old growth rainforest left in Australia, and your bushwalk finishes in the heart of Githabul country — at the foothills of Jalgumbunj (Mount Lindesay). To learn more, and plan your next ecoadventure, head to visitkyogle.com
WALKING HIKING, TREKKING & BUSHWALKING
The Fairy Mount walk is a local classic. Starting at the lookout on Mount Street, this one-hour walk takes you to the top of the mountain and back, through open eucalyptus forest. You’re now walking on Gullibul country, amongst massive grass trees that are older than the town itself. If you get lucky, you may see a Boodahbee 9

Art on Bundjalung Market, which celebrates the creative cultural heritage of the Bundjalung region, is coming to Kyogle in 2022. Featuring handmade arts and crafts by established and emerging artists and collectives, who use both traditional and contemporary materials and practices including weaving, ceramics, carving, photography, painting, and textiles. The Arts Northern Rivers event offers the opportunity to see, experience and purchase incredible work being produced by artists of the Bundjalung region, and offers a unique chance to ‘meet the makers’ and hear their stories. Previous events (in 2019 and 2021 at The Quad in Lismore) have been the largest Indigenous markets ever presented in the Northern Rivers / Bundjalung region, surpassing all expectations regarding audience numbers (over 5,000 visitors), artist participation, sales generated, and on-going opportunities developed.
“The overwhelming success of the delivered Art on Bundjalung Market events in Lismore have proved the importance of continuing to deliver this event to our community,” explained Jane Fuller, Arts Northern Rivers Executive Director. “Celebrating the cultural heritage of the Bundjalung region, the market is an opportunity to meet the artists, hear their stories and share their culture.” For more information visit www.artonbundjalung.com

Githabul Fire Lore THE RIGHT FIRE AT THE RIGHT TIME For many thousands of years, First Nations people worked with fire to maintain healthy Country. Knowledge of how to care for the land through cultural burning ‘at the right time in the right way’ was passed down, resulting in an abundance of food resources and a healthy ecosystem. The first Europeans to Australia described a well cared for landscape that resembelled a ‘gentlemans park’, and while some tried to mimic the Indigenous use of fire to maintain open pastures for agriculture — without a detailed understanding of the deep cultural knowleddg and connection — the correct burning regime was disrupted. Back in 2019, a group of Githabul people from Muli Muli near Woodenbong started ‘Fire Lore’; a local Indigenous-stewarded, custodial land management, and consultancy organisation. Director Robbie Williams has spent the past 15 years learning from Uncle Victor Steffensen (author of Fire Country) after being chosen to learn, and pass on, cultural burning knowledge from Awu Laya- Kuku Taipan Country in the Cape. His mentors Dr Tommy George and Dr George Musgrave are part of an unbroken chain of cultural knowledge.
Words and image by Paul Daley
many thousands of years; cool burning is good for the land and is also a carbon negative process, working to create what is the original ‘bio-char’ stores of carbon that create healthy, rich soils. Not long after the return of cultural burning on Githabul country, the Black Summer bushfires devastated 12.6 million hectares of land and an estimated three billion animals died including entire populations of koala pushed to the brink. As much as the debate over climate change and land use continues, one thing is for sure — cool burning reduces the fuel load and therefore severity of intense bushfires.
After many, many decades of absence, the Githabul cultural burns were reignited in July 2019 and offered a powerful experience for all involved. By burning in the cool winter months, the fire is much less intense, moving slowly along the ground. The big trees and canopy are preserved, and the soil doesn’t burn hot, meaning grasses are able to regenerate abundantly.
Many people in our local bio-region are now ready to listen and learn how to apply this ancient fire knowledge in a way that is safe, regenerative and beneficial for pastures and biodiversity — whilst reducing the risk to homes and infrastructure. Since 2019 Fire Lore have held over 30 workshops with schools and local farmers, and led over 50 cultural fires across more than 1000 acres of land . Fire Lore conducts workshops, educational days and school visits to empower their community with this important cultural revival.

Healing through the Arts MUSICIAN & AUTHOR CYNTHIA C DENTON Local creative powerhouse Cynthia C Denton is often known for her beautiful voice and stirring guitar, but it may surprise some to learn that she is also a published author, dedicated to helping people heal through art, and fostering the next generation of creatives. Cynthia left her home country of Namibia in 1992, and spent the next eight years in community development in South Africa. She travelled all over southern Africa as part of an international performing arts group, focused on cross-cultural communication and reconciliation. “Arts is an incredible tool to bring identity and healing to people,” she explains. “Music was my first passion, but my love for writing started at a very young age too. When the performance group came to Australia in 1998, I fell in love with Kyogle and have lived here since 2001. Once I came here the season for writing started and I have since self-published four books.” Her two books, A Queen Within and A Queen Dethroned strike a chord with many women, and she hopes they serve as a ‘timely reminder of our worth and value’. “So many of us have felt abuse and are in need of healing,” she reflects. “We cannot remain stuck in our brokenness; we deserve to feel whole and in doing so we can bring healing to others.”
“Currently I am working on a new book in the Queen Within series. There is no hurry to get it done as I am also enjoying the occasional music gig around town as well as playing for weddings and events.” Over the next 12 months, Cynthia will also be acting as a mentor for aspiring African authors. “I am excited to see more Africans arise to tell our stories to the world. Australia has been a beautiful home to me, a place where so many of my dreams came true. It would only be appropriate for me to pay it forward, both here and to my people back home.” Follow Cynthia’s work on her website www.cynthiacdenton.gumroad.com CynthiaDDenton
Cynthia has had 32 years experience as a musician and performing artist, releasing two music albums in that time. One album, Legacy, was written for a musical based on the history of her people in Namibia. In 2013, she started private music classes in Kyogle and Casino, teaching guitar, ukulele and singing to all ages. 17

In Focus Q&A WITH NEWLY LOCAL DOCUMENTARY MAKER JORDAN EDMEADES
Tell us a bit about your creative practice... I make documentaries that have meaning for me and that have an impact on those that see the film. Making a doco with someone can be very cathartic for both those on camera and those watching the finished piece. Whether it’s a story about their life, something that happened to them in the past or something that they’re in the thick of right now, the process of articulating and exploring when, where and how it all went down is always fascinating for me. What is it about this type of storytelling that calls to you? Every film I do introduces me to a whole new world, and I am always honoured to be the one to try and capture it all with honesty and integrity. I recently completed a contract shooting on Ambulance Australia, and it was incredible to be face-to-face with the phone operators; a very intense experience for everyone involved and I now have an even greater respect for the great work they do. Which of your projects do you feel most proud of, and why? I have shot, directed and produced documentaries and factual TV shows for ABC, BBC, Network 10 and the Discovery Channel. I directed A Stargazers Guide to the Cosmos for ABC iView back in 2018, which to this day was an experience that changed my life. It triggered a deep love for practical astronomy and human spaceflight
and I have been following the science of space closely ever since. I also specialise in community storytelling and have been lucky enough to be invited to shoot with many First Nations elders over the years, capturing their knowledge and stories so they can be shared with generations to come. You’ve recently settled in Kyogle; what brought you to this region? It’s a common cliche but very true for a lot of Kyoglians it seems, we just feel at home here. I’ve worked all over the world and lived in a number of different countries but the Northern Rivers always stood out for us as the place we wanted to settle down in. My wife and I always wanted to live in nature, surrounded by forest, and we found the perfect patch of land to catch our own water and grow our own food. What are you working on at the moment? I’m developing a new documentary format this year for local people to tell their life story. So a family can hire me to interview and shoot a documentary about their grandmother or grandfather, or someone else in their family. I’ve been making these types of legacy films for a few years now... I suppose it’s a bit like This Is Your Life but for local people. If you have a loved one who would like to capture their story in a documentary format, get in touch with Jordan at jedmeades@gmail.com

Resilience is a word that’s thrown around a lot these days, but there are few who manage to embody the term as fully as Sasha Welker and Rhys Minton, the owners of Green Goddess Farm. KCM’s Jasmine Phillips caught up with the couple to talk about the highs and lows of life on the land. It’s a picture perfect day in Findon Creek, about 30 minutes’ drive west of Kyogle. The creek is babbling beautifully, and there are not enough names for all the shades of green that spring from the earth at Green Goddess Farms. The 3.5 acre property — which produces a mountain of nutrient dense foods and boasts the Northern Rivers’ only certified organic apple orchard — is peaceful and lush. In a ‘normal year’ the farm feeds hundreds with certified organic, closed loop, sustainable, vegetables, fruit and flowers grown by Sasha and Rhys, as well 26

If it wasn’t for the delivery truck, crushed and precariously perched on an embankment on the driveway down, you might not guess that just months ago this property was almost two metres underwater. In November 2021, a storm and flash flood inundated the fields, sheds, pack room and greenhouse, and most of their essential farm equipment was destroyed. The refrigerated delivery van — their most
LIFESTYLE valuable asset and the vital link between their farm and their stockist across the Northern Rivers — was swept three kilometres downstream. Neighbours and community chipped in to try to help, and some of the garlic crop was salvaged as the rain poured down, but within three short hours they went from full production to total destruction. Only partially insured, it left the couple heartbroken and uncertain of their future. The changing (and increasing extreme) weather patterns pose a constant threat. While they narrowly avoided more damage in the February 2022 ‘super floods’, each season requires contingency plans and it’s hard to feel secure. During my visit on a more peaceful week nearing the end of summer, we walk the acreage, viewing new corn shoots push through, picking the last of the organic nashi pear crop, and admiring the mass of kiwifruit. Both Sasha and Rhys could happily talk for hours about soil health, no tillage systems (where farmers do as little as possible to disturb the soil), cover cropping and organic farming all day long. Their passion is contagious, and each delicious item plucked from the garden shows the results of that love. Sasha and Rhys didn’t have a farming background when they started in 2008 — just a desire to produce their own food and live as sustainably as possible. Their work has not only nourished bodies, but inspired hearts and minds in the community, as over time they have helped others with their hard gained knowledge. When asked about the biggest thing Sasha has learnt from the land, her answer is clear. “There’s a big intimate connection between the land, the person, the animals, and the plants,” she explains. “It’s a journey all of the time, learning how to do a better job, listening in and care-taking the soil and the ecosystem, trying to strike that balance between a wild and domesticated nature. My ideal

world is where everyone is engaging with nature on some level because we are not separate from that.” The couple’s future on the land here is still uncertain. “I’m not sure what our next year looks like,” Sasha considers. “It’s so variable between drought and flood. But I do know that I will be farming on some level, no matter what I do. This is our life’s work. What it will look like I don’t know exactly, but I know there is no way I can stop.” A GoFundMe campaign has been set up by health food company and Green Goddess Farm stockist Santos to help support Sasha and Rhys in their recovery. Summerland Giant Pumpkin & Watermelon
The Summerland Giant Pumpkin & Watermelon Festival started in 2012 with the goal of encouraging people to grow their own vegetables and to showcase the region’s diverse produce and skilled farmers. The Festival organisers are passionate about the beauty and abundance of the Kyogle area. In 2018, the Festival gained new life in becoming a joint venture between the Summerland Pumpkin Grower’s Organisation and the Growing Kyogle Tidy Towns Committee and is now held annually in Stratheden Street in the heart of Kyogle CBD. Stratheden Street comes alive with music, market stalls, classic car displays, and of course, a celebration of all things that grow on vines! The program includes a still life art prize, craft and cooking competition, home gardener contest, and a pumpkin and watermelon sculpting contest. The addition of a watermelon eating contest and Heritage Train rides in 2022 provided more fun activities to get involved in. The vegetable growers participating in the festival have even set Australian records for the heaviest gourd, weighing in at 50.5kg in
2022 and for the heaviest pumpkin, weighing in at a whopping 867kg in 2021. The Festival continues to grow in size each year and we’re hoping that the vegies do too! Giant pumpkin and watermelon seeds are available from July each year at Harley & Co and Norco in Kyogle, as well as other produce and farm supply stores across the Northern Rivers. You also can message the Festival on Facebook or email to get your hands on some and get growing.

The
Weedy Way
Images by David Trood
Nestled into the hills behind Kyogle, in the small village of Cawongla, there is a thriving hilltop garden that’s being watched by thousands of people around the world.
The channel is the creative offering of a local couple, David Trood (a prize-winning travel and commercial photographer) and jewellery designer Heather Elwell.
The Weedy Garden, as it is known, it the star of a YouTube channel of the same name. Stunning photography, and authentic storytelling have seen The Weedy Garden reach 119,000 subscribers on YouTube, (the most watched video has over 550,000 views at the time of writing) along with a dedicated fan community on Facebook and Patreon.
David Trood has travelled the world for almost three decades, completing thousands of editorial, corporate, and commercial photography projects in over 40 countries. He’s passionate about capturing the connection between people and nature, and has pushed the boundaries of visual storytelling, contributing to publications like National Geographic, Time
32
Magazine, the BBC, ABC and Huffington Post just to name a few. Heather helps with creative input and marketing, while working on her stunning, handmade, crystal-infused jewellery brand Exotic Elegance. The garden was born from ‘a desire to survive and thrive’, and like many projects, begun during the 2020 lockdowns. At the time, David was living between Australia and Denmark (where he had a regular client base), but travel restrictions meant he needed to find a different way to live and work. “I saw the toilet paper thing with people fighting over basic essentials, and I think — like a lot of people — I got a bit scared, “ he explained. He thought “I don’t want to be living like that” and set out to make his own food security. With an amazing array of professional photography equipment lying around, David decided to document his journey, and the pair set out to explore and inspire others to create a greater connection with nature and the sources of their food. There is also a Weedy Garden movie on the way. David recently completed an experiment where he lived entirely from the produce of his garden, until he had eaten his own weight in food. “We’ll do a local theatre release later in the year so we can share the movie with the community,” he said. “It will be available on YouTube Premium and other subscription services.” The Weedy Garden has also had a positive flow-on effect to the local community following the heartbreaking Northern Rivers floods. His video showing flooding around Cawongla, combined with stories of friends who lost everything in Lismore, helped raised over $23,000 in a MyCause campaign in its first two weeks. “The positive community response has been phenomenal,” David said. “It is truly warming to watch our humanity as collective resilience is unleashed.”

Exotic Elegance HANDMADE BEADED JEWELLERY BY HEATHER ELWELL Inspired by her love of beads and semiprecious gemstones, Heather Elwell creates beautiful jewellery pieces from her home studio in Cawongla — just down the hill from the Weedy Garden. Heather sees her creations as an expression of herself in may ways, describing her one-of-a-kind pieces as ‘colourful, natural, connected and conscious’. Many of the pieces are also inspired by her passion for tribal design, music and culture — Heather plays djembe and is a West African drum performer and teacher. “Ancient cultures have always fascinated me, and creating from that source of inspiration feels deeply connected,” she said. “When you combine that with the healing energy of the gemstones, each item has its own soul and is waiting for its perfect wearer.” See the stunning full range of Heather’s pendants and earrings at www.exoticelegance.store

WRITERS FESTIVAL QUICK Q&A WITH
Mirandi Riwoe Mirandi Riwoe is a Brisbane-based writer with connections to the Northern Rivers, and is proud to act as the 2022 Kyogle Writers Festival Ambassador. Her book Stone Sky Gold Mountain won the inaugural ARA Historical Novel Prize and the Queensland Literary Award, was shortlisted for the Stella Prize and longlisted for the Miles Franklin Award. Her novella The Fish Girl won Seizure’s Viva la Novella and was shortlisted for the Stella Prize. Kyogle Culture caught up with her briefly, ahead of this years Festival. You are this year’s Kyogle Writers Festival Ambassador — how did you come to be involved with the Festival? In 2021, I was invited to the Kyogle Writers Festival in its inaugural year. It was a lovely, intimate festival which meant there was room and time to really meet other authors and readers. I am so grateful to be invited back this year, especially as the festival ambassador. Last year they provided a really interesting, impressive line-up of authors and this year is no different. This year’s theme is ‘Close to Home?’... what comes to mind for you when you think about ‘home’? Home for me will always be about having a sense of belonging, be it within a family or friendship group, or a neighbourhood or even a country. I am often interested in writing about migrants and the difficulties associated with identifying ‘home’ or ‘belonging’ when in a new country. 36
Perhaps this is because my father came from Indonesia in the 1960s and I am Eurasian myself, but also, one day I’d like to write about my mother’s family and their strong sense of connection to Ireland despite living here in Australia for generations. What role do you think writers’ festivals take in inspiring readers and writers in a world of fast media? Writers’ festivals offer a fantastic opportunity to become immersed in books and are a great point of contact between readers and writers. Panels and conversations about books and authors can hopefully engage readers to pick up books that might appeal to them, in which they can become immersed. But, of course, there will still be time for social media in between – to tweet about how fabulous a panel is or to share a favourite read on Instagram.
“Writers’ festivals offer a fantastic opportunity to become immersed in books and are a great point of contact between readers and writers.”
What are you most looking forward to about the Kyogle Writers Festival 2022? Meeting other readers and writers is one of my favourite things about being a writer, and this year’s festival has a really exciting line-up of authors. There are too many brilliant writers attending the festival this year to list, but I am positive the panel conversations will be incredibly inspiring and thought-provoking. I cannot wait! Also, this year I am one of the judges for the Writer in Residence Program, which will support up to two First Nations writers in the development of their craft. I am really excited to read all the submissions. Can you tell us a little bit about what you are currently working on, or what the rest of 2022 holds for you creatively? At the moment, I am working on a novel set in Java just before the Japanese invade during WWII. I hope to get to Indonesia sometime this year – the pandemic really slowed down my research and writing. But my collection of stories, The Burnished Sun, will be released in April. The collection includes a novella about Annah the Javanese, one of Gauguin’s models, and other short fiction set here and overseas. Catch Mirandi at the Festival on Friday 13th of May, in her ambassador role at the Roxy Gallery from 3pm with Mandy Beaumont, and on Saturday 14th (11am) as part of the New Fiction panel. Kyogle Home Living TOUGHY’S GOT YOU COVERED. It’s been quite a journey for Kyogle Home Living, which started life in 2019 in a shed in the back lane, selling flooring and blinds. Within a matter of weeks, the business outgrew itself and branched into mattresses and bedding to meet the need of the Kyogle community. Bursting at the seams, a new showroom was needed, and set up began in ‘the old Mitre10 building’. Owner Simon Tough said he was a little nervous to begin with. “I moved into this huge area on the 1st of May 2020 with a great deal of enthusiasm and an extended range to take in carpet and all other floor coverings, all size beds, mattresses, furniture, rugs, office furniture, window coverings and blinds. Now we were up and running. And then COVID hit.” This placed enormous strain on a business in its infancy, but with the 44

Super Bags 4 Super Kids HELPING FLOOD-AFFECTED FAMILIES The flooding in the Northern Rivers at the end February this year was devastating for so many families. The ramifications will continue on long after all of the mud has been cleaned away. When Kyogle local Ali Lewis saw a way she could help with ongoing support, she sprang into action and put out a call on social media asking for donations of simple items for children who left their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The response was amazing! People gave backpacks and clothes and toys and more, and a friend even loaned a van to transport the donations back to kids in flood-affected areas. Ali has since been joined by other coordinators and they have been delivering ‘literal bus loads of bags’ filled with essentials and gifts to kids in need.
Super Bags 4 Super Kids now has two drop off points in Kyogle: The Farmer’s Plate cafe and The Business Hive, both on Summerland Way. Visit the website to find out more or to request a bag for a flood affected child or teen.
