its talons into the River of Grass and hauled out a lunch of fish. That was my first close encounter with our national symbol of freedom. When Europeans arrived in North America, the continent teemed with as many as 500,000 bald eagles. They were considered threats to livestock and salmon,

OUR NEW ANIMAL AMBASSADORS: RED-LEGGED FROGS Meet our newest amphibian animal ambassadors: red-legged frogs! The red-legged frog is a rare species found almost exclusively in California—and now at Lindsay Wildlife. These three frogs are coming to Lindsay from Monterey Bay Aquarium, which could no longer house them. Red-legged frogs are on the Endangered Species List because they are threatened by invasive species and habitat loss. Only a few centers are licensed to care for them, and we are proud to be one of them. Come meet these froggy friends this summer at Lindsay!
cies was removed from the Endangered Species List. After nearly vanishing, bald eagles are now thriving, but we must not be complacent. They remain vulnerable to power-line execution, secondary poisoning from rodenticide and habitat loss. The American bald eagle is a survivor—it has gone through hard times, and still it prevails. I cannot think of a better national symbol than the American bald eagle, or a more poignant ambassador for Lindsay. Cheryl McCormick, Ph.D. Executive Director | Lindsay Wildlife Experience

Bald Eagles vs. Golden Eagles DESPITE APPEARANCES AND A SHARED NAME, BALD EAGLES ARE QUITE DIFFERENT FROM THEIR GOLDEN COUNTERPARTS. LEARN WHAT SETS APART THESE TWO REGAL BIRDS. • Bald eagles are typically bigger than golden eagles. • Bald eagles make their homes near rivers, lakes and marshes, almost exclusively in North America. Golden eagles, on the other hand, can be spotted around the world in Eurasia, North Africa and the Americas, in habitats that vary wildly from woodlands to deserts. • Bald eagles prey mostly on fish, and golden eagles primarily eat rodents and small mammals.
Lindsay's new bald eagle will be named on April 1 at the Faces of Wildlife Gala.
Regal Raptors Lindsay’s two magnificent eagles inspire visitors to learn, interact and engage in conservation efforts
I
n December, a majestic bald eagle flew across the country to make her new home at Lindsay Wildlife Experience. With a little help, that is. Because of a grave wing injury, the gorgeous raptor could not actually fly here herself; instead, she was a well-cared-for passenger on an airline flight from Missouri to California. The bird—which will be named April 1 at the Faces of Wildlife Gala—was being housed at Missouri’s World Bird Sanctuary when Lindsay acquired her as its newest animal ambassador. Currently, she is one of two eagles living on-site; the other, a female golden eagle named Topaz, has been a beloved member of the Lindsay family since 2005. “Our eagles not only serve as wonderful ambassadors and educators, they also help us send powerful conservation messages,” says Cheryl McCormick, executive director of Lindsay.

“These extraordinary birds have sustained severe injuries that make them nonreleasable, and Lindsay has an obligation to speak out on their behalf and promote efforts to protect them.” Of course, bald eagles are one of conservation’s greatest success stories: The U.S. Department of the Interior was finally able to remove the birds from the Endangered and Threatened Species List in 2007, after they had faced decades of extinction. Still, despite their successful recovery, “we can never be complacent,” McCormick notes. Eagles—and all raptors—are still threatened by man-made dangers, from wind turbines to habitat loss to the secondary ingestion of rodenticide. With its two eagles now in residence, Lindsay strives to raise awareness of the issues affecting these birds—and to educate people on how they can make a difference. One important way is to make our own yards more wildlife-friendly (with no
• Both bald and golden eagles mate for life and lay one to three eggs each year. However, bald eagles commonly make their nests in forests, while golden eagles prefer cliffs.

rodenticide or other poisons). Another is to use our voices as citizens to encourage alternative-energy companies, such as wind farms and solar plants, to build installations that are less harmful to high-flying raptors. Lindsay’s eagles are clear symbols of the urgent need for conservation, but they are also delightful birds to observe. Topaz likes nothing more than to take an old phonebook and shred it into confetti, says Brittany Buenvenida, senior animal keeper. And the new bald eagle is very vocal, making her presence known to anyone who comes near her aviary. Her handlers have also learned that she has a fierce appetite— walking into her aviary with food elicits a very enthusiastic response—picture an eagle in the shape of a balloon, staring a hole into your feeding pouch! This bald eagle has spent her entire life as an educational ambassador at another facility. She is a welcome addition to Lindsay. “The eagles are glamorous and stunning,” McCormick says. “And they remind us that we have to always be active in a constructive way.”
• The bald eagle might steal the spotlight as the U.S. national emblem, appearing on everything from the presidential seal to the back of the quarter, but the golden eagle is a celeb in its own right—it is the national bird of Mexico.
Where Eagles Soar WANT TO SEE EAGLES IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD? DOUG BELL, WILDLIFE PROGRAM MANAGER OF THE EAST BAY REGIONAL PARK DISTRICT AND AN EXPERT ON EAGLES, HAS THESE RECOMMENDATIONS: • Look for bald eagles by the San Pablo Reservoir and Lake Chabot. • Golden eagles can be spotted in the Brushy Peak Regional Preserve (especially in wintertime) and the Sunol Regional Wilderness.

This report covers the period of July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016. While this printed space is limited, we value each and every contribution made by members of our community. Please continue to celebrate this generosity by further reading on our website where all donors are listed. If you believe we have made an error, please contact Julie Clemens, Development Director at 925-627-2928 or jclemens@ lindsaywildlife.org.
past year Lindsay has adopted a more transparent budgeting process, with the goal of producing a sustainable financial “ This future. We have delivered on capital improvements that enhance the Exhibit Hall and educate visitors, such as the What’s Wild—What’s Not exhibit and redwood forest habitat for our new porcupine, both completed in 2016 and made possible by the generous support of our donors. For wildlife rehabilitation animals, raptor and songbird aviaries were improved, and more plans are underway to upgrade areas where wildlife patients spend the final days of their rehabilitation before being released into the wild. Lindsay’s future is brighter than ever, thanks to the hard work of volunteers and staff and the commitment to wildlife from our dedicated donors. —GABE TOGNERI, PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
