featuring pigs, lambs, rabbits and steers that youngsters with 4-H, Grange and Future Farmers of America have raised. The Miss Del Norte beauty pageant will take place during the fair. There will be numerous artists performing live music, including a special appearance from country music star John Michael Montgomery on Thursday. Local band Disturbing the Peace will open for Montgomery. The fair will also introduce a few new activities, including an ATV Quad Bash that folks of all ages can get in on. Check-in and bike inspection for the race will start at 3 p.m. Friday with the race staging at 6:30 p.m. The event will close with an awards ceremony from 9:30–10 p.m. “It started out with one idea and ended up into a full-fledged competition for all ages,” said Randy Hatfield, CEO of the Del Norte County Fairgrounds. “We’ve added $1,000 to

the race. The winner of each race will get a minimum of $250.” Entry forms for the Quad Bash are online at dnfair.org, said Kim Floyd, media, marketing and events coordinator for the 2014 fair. Folks can download the forms and bring them into the Del Norte County Fairgrounds office. They can also sign up the day of the event, Floyd said. Rules and regulations for the event can be found at dnfair.org as well, she said. The fair wouldn’t be complete without a rodeo, and this year’s is no exception. The junior rodeo will start at 9 a.m. Saturday. The adult rodeo will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The rodeo will end with a dance for folks 21 and up from 7–11 p.m. on Saturday. The dance will feature music from Billy Lund and Whiskey Weekend. Hatfield said there will also be a Florida alligator on display at the fair. “Years ago we had a large steer, and you only bring these in once in awhile,” Hatfield said, adding that he’s not sure how big the gator

will be or if folks will be allowed to pet it. “We got a call, and a guy wanted to bring his alligator. We said, ‘Sure, bring him in!’” Folks will also be able to try their hand at a traveling game show, Floyd said. It’s a trivia game on wheels, featuring music, lights and prizes. The Theater Inc. Traveling Game Show will be roaming the fairgrounds starting at noon on all four days of the fair. Also new this year, the public is invited to put their taste buds to the test in a dairy competition through FFA. According to Floyd, whose daughter participated in this activity, the dairy competition will have folks identify cheeses by blind taste tests. She said people will also taste different types of milk to see if they can determine which sample has saltwater or other additives in it. Other activities and exhibits sponsored by FFA include demonstrations by Del Norte High School’s agricultural-mechanics team, which placed 15th in the state competition this year. FFA will also feature a farm-to-market store exhibit, which takes kids from planting a seed to harvesting the produce and taking it to the market and selling it, Hatfield said. Continued on page 6

The FFA farm-to-market exhibit and dairy competition will be in the fair’s main building on Friday. The ag-mechanics team will hold its demonstrations in the Ace Pavilion at the fairgrounds. Another new activity this year, put on by Del Norte’s 4-H program, is an archery demonstration on Friday in the Ace Pavilion, Hatfield said. “They’ve been learning archery all year long, and it’s a great time for our kids to demonstrate their skills,” he said. Hatfield said he had hoped to have archery demonstrations on each day of the fair, but many of the students have to participate in other aspects of the fair, including the annual Livestock Auction. The 4-H, FFA and Grange Livestock Auction will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday. “There’s so much for kids to do in this town,” Hatfield said. “There’s a list of all the Grange items that these kids have been involved in just this summer and what they’re doing and where they’re going. There’s just no lack of things to do.” At a time when fair officials are fighting just to keep the grounds open, Hatfield said

he’s confident that attendance will be up for this year’s fair. “We’re putting on a big, big party and we’re hoping everybody shows up for it,” he said. “That’s what we’re here for — to put on an event that everybody has fun at and enjoys themselves and creates memories for themselves.”

ountry music star John Michael Montgomery will return to the Del Norte County Fair for the first time in 12 years to perform at the North Valley Bank Arena at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Local classic rock/country music cover band Disturbing the Peace will open for Montgomery. Seats in the grandstand and on the grass are free with fair admission. Box seats are available for $20 each and platform seats are available for $10 each. “We’ve decided to open the fair with a concert instead of having it on Friday like we used to,” said fair CEO Randy Hatfield. Montgomery, who was born in Danville, Ky., received musical encouragement from his father, who played in a local country band and

taught him his first chords on the guitar. Montgomery joined the family band, playing guitar and later becoming a lead singer. Early in his career, Montgomery performed as a solo artist and was spotted by Atlantic Records. His debut 1992 album, “Life’s a Dance,” produced Montgomery’s first No. 1 hit, “I Love the Way You Love Me.” Montgomery’s well-known hits include “Rope the Moon,” “If You Got Love,” “No Man’s Land” and “Cowboy Love,” according to his website. He has received numerous awards, including the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Vocalist Award, the Country Music Award’s Single and Song of the Year, Billboard’s Top Country Artist and a Grammy nomination. Disturbing the Peace began in March 2013 as folks from the same workplace playing out of a garage to perform at the annual employee picnic. Last summer, Disturbing the Peace performed at several local venues, including the 2013 fair.

The band’s influences include Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Van Morrison, Toby Keith, Bad Company and the Rolling Stones. For more information on Disturbing the Peace, visit the band’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/DistThePeace. For more information on John Michael Montgomery, visit www.johnmichael.com.

dock-diving dogs to Del Norte County for this year’s fair, said Kim Floyd, media, marketing and events coordinator for the fair. Del Norters and their canine companions are invited to “give it a try” from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. X-Treme Air Dogs is a competition in which dogs jump for distance or height from a platform into a body of water. X-Treme Air Dogs has divisions in long jumps, high jumps and a timed competition. Levels for the long jump division range from “give it a try” first-time competitors to X-Treme Pro, for dogs who can jump more than 25 feet. “Professional trainers train them how to do the competition,” Floyd said. “If you think that your dog can do it, then you can enter into the different waves and see how well your dog does.” Continued on page 9

X-Treme Air Dogs was started in 2003 and has grown in popularity. Contestants will bring pooches to Del Norte from as far away as San Diego, Reno and Portland, Floyd said. Some dogs will jump up to 29 feet, she said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun, and it’s going to be really interesting,” she said. According to the program’s website, the Del Norte County Fair will be Round 1 of the competition. Round 2 will be held Aug. 6–9 at the Douglas County Fair in Oregon. Rounds 3 and 4 will be held Aug. 22–29 at the

Oregon State Fair. The X-Treme Air Dog competition will be going on throughout each day of the Del Norte County Fair, said fairgrounds CEO Randy Hatfield. He asks that interested contestants notify the fairgrounds beforehand if they are interested in competing. Contestants will bring their dogs through the livestock gate at the north end of the grounds, where they will buy their tickets, Hatfield said. Once they’re finished with the competition, they will be asked to take their dogs home, he said. “We’re not going to let the dogs walk around the fairgrounds,” Hatfield said. “We want people to have fun at this, but also for the safety and welfare of the dog, we don’t want them to be put in the car and kept there all day. (Folks) need to take their dog home and then come back to the fair.” Since contestants already will have paid for admission to the fair, they’ll be able to re-enter it for free after they take their dogs home, Hatfield said. s Del Norte County gears up for the 2014 fair, officials continue to work

on a plan to keep the fairgrounds open beyond 2016. The Del Norte County Fair Board expects to be out of money following the 2016 fair, according to fairgrounds CEO Randy Hatfield.

Even though the site is owned by the state and the current board members are appointed by the governor, California stopped funding fairs in 2011. To keep the fairgrounds operating, the Fair Board has created the Committee for Measure F to support a ballot measure seeking Del Norters’ votes for a 0.25-percent sales tax increase that would fund a special fair district for seven years, Hatfield said. The measure will be on the November ballot and needs a two-thirds vote to pass, Hatfield said. “We wanted to make sure the money was dedicated to the fair and wouldn’t be siphoned off and (sent) to any other location,” he said. “The general public is looking at taxes, and they don’t see what they’re getting for it. In this particular case, they’ll be able to see exactly what they get for it.” If Del Norte voters approve Measure F, Continued on page 11

the Fair Board will be able to research new ways for generating necessary revenue, including pursuing private partnerships, Hatfield said. The board will also be able to ensure the viability of potential funding opportunities. In addition to voting for the tax measure, voters will be asked to elect directors to the special district’s governing board. This board

will handle the grounds’ operating decisions, Hatfield said. Several people have expressed interest in running for a position, he said, although no one has taken out election papers yet. Hatfield added that an increase in folks wanting to actually participate in the fair this year instead of simply attending gives him hope for the ballot measure. Kim Floyd, media, marketing and event

coordinator for the fair, said one family with seven children will participate in the livestock show as independents, showing off the goats and chickens they have raised. Another couple, whose child wanted to enter the fair, will show their flock of chickens as independents as well, Floyd said “Our motto this year is get involved with the fair,” Hatfield said. “That’s the theme. We want people to come and support the fair.”
