Brookings Dental Arts “Giving Back...” Brookings Dental Arts believes that giving back to the community isn't just for the Holidays. That is why we have created programs that 'give' all year long. Brookings Dental Arts, with the cooperation of local churches in Brookings and Crescent City, began to help patients in dire need who were referred to them by pastors of local churches in the area. Since the program began in October of 2013, Brookings Dental Arts has provided more than $30,000 of services. Brookings Dental Arts has also lead the community in bringing awareness to the increase in global sugar consumption in our children. Global sugar consumption in our youth increases about 2% annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year. In some cases, the wrong candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces, as well as hyperactivity and weight gain. For the past few years now, Brookings Dental Arts has been leading the anti-decay movement in our area by giving away dollars and tooth brushes in exchange for cavity provoking candies. By sponsoring the “put your money where your mouth is” campaign to the areas trick-or-treaters, Brookings Dental Arts offers our local youth the opportunity to bring in their 'excess' unopened Halloween candy to our offices, and receive $1.00 per pound the day after Halloween. All the candy collected is then shipped to our troops over seas.
We enjoy our patients so much that we love to reward them for their loyalty. Whether you are a long standing patient or have just now become part of our patient family, we have something for you. Maintaining healthy oral hygiene is very important, and hey, maybe we can make it a little fun too. When you arrive for your scheduled hygiene appointment you will be automatically entered to win a $50.00 Ipad gift certificate. To be eligible, just attend your scheduled hygiene appointment without rescheduling it. How easy is that? When you receive services at Brookings Dental Arts, you can be assured that you will experience only the highest levels of dental technologies available. In fact, Dr. Brice Chang DDS, MICOI, FAGD, AFAAID, is the only dentist who is licensed to perform all moderate conscious sedation, including IV moderate conscious sedation, in Brookings and Gold Beach. No other dental clinic in the area is licensed to perform all moderate
conscious sedation options. Dentists use several types of sedation, depending on the patient's needs. When it comes to sedation, you have many options, and Brookings Dental Arts is your local choice for all moderate conscious sedation. Your smile is your calling card, and we want you to make a great first impression. Discolored teeth can leave you feeling insecure, wishing you had a shining smile. The good news is, whether your teeth are discolored due to unpreventable hereditary factors, or just too many cups of coffee, Brookings Dental Arts can help. Brookings Dental Arts uses only the newest technology to whiten teeth, whether it's professional tooth whitening products to improve the color of enamel, or bonding procedures for severe discoloration. Teeth color lightness should last from 0ne to five years, depending on habits like smoking or drinking coffee and tea. After this time
period, you can choose to get a 'touch up', and this re-treatment takes less time than the original treatment. We also believe in preserving the smiles of our youth. If you are between 10 and 18 years old and you play school sports, Brookings Dental Arts will GIVE you a complimentary sports mouth guard! You don't even have to be our patient to receive this FREE sports guard. Contact our offices to find out how you can get yours, and let the games begin! At Brookings Dental Arts, we believe that quality dental care should never be a financial burden. To ensure that our patients can get the care they deserve at prices that make sense in today's economy, we have developed the 'Brookings Gold Plan'. This unique plan is a convenient and cost effective alternative to traditional insurances, and unlike insurance, there are no waiting periods, deductibles, or yearly maximums. To obtain more information on any of our programs, visit us at www.BrookingsDental Arts.com, or call our offices at 541-469-0192. Submitted by

Walk your way to better health Savvy Senior More than 25 years of research has shown that walking may be the single best exercise you can do to improve your health. It burns calories (about 100 for every mile you walk) which will help you lose weight, it builds endurance, enhances muscle tone and it doesn’t pound your joints. It also helps improve or prevent many age-related health problems including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis and dementia. But walking is not only good for what ails you. It’s also one of the easiest and most convenient exercises you can do, and is completely free. All you need is a good pair of walking shoes that fit well and a little desire. Here are a few tips to help you get started. Start walking: Start out slow if you need to. For many people this means head out the door, walk for 10 minutes, and walk back. Do it every day for a week. If that seems easy, add five minutes to your walks next week and keep adding five minutes until you are walking as long as you desire. It’s also a smart idea to start and finish your walk with a few simple warm up and cool down stretches. Stretching will make you feel better and help prevent injury. How far: Any walking is better than none, but most fitness professionals recommend walking about 30 minutes, five days a week. Research has shown that the 30 minutes can be broken up throughout the day – 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there. Or, for optimal health benefits aim for 10,000 steps per day, which is the equivalent of about five miles. How fast: The right walking speed depends on your fitness level. Ideally you should walk at a brisk pace that has you breathing heavily, but you are still able to carry on a conversation. Staying Motivated While starting a walking program
takes initiative, sticking with it takes commitment. Here are some tips to help you stay motivated: • Find some walking buddies: They can provide motivation and support along with companionship and security. • Use a pedometer: These nifty little gadgets – available in sporting goods stores for around $25 – measure how far you’ve walked in steps and miles, providing motivation by spurring you to meet a particular goal and showing you if you’ve met it. Or, if you’re a smartphone user, consider downloading a pedometer app like accupedo.com or runtastic.com. • Join a walking club: To find one in your community call your local medical center, mall, health clubs, YMCA, running shoe stores or Area Agency on Aging to see if they sponsor or know of any clubs or groups. Or try the American Volkssport Association (ava.org) and American Heart Association Walking Club (mywalkingclub.org), which let you search for non-competitive walking clubs in your area, or start one. • Keep a journal: Use it to keep track of your walking minutes, steps, or mileage and total it up at the end of each week to see how you’re progressing. • Get a dog: Studies have shown that dog owners are much more likely to take regular walks than non-dog owners. • Listen to music: An iPod or MP3 player can also make a nice walking companion. Check outwalk.jog.fm to find great walking songs that will match your pace. • Have a backup plan: If bad weather, allergies or other factors limit your outdoor walking, have a backup plan like walking at your local mall, buying a home treadmill or joining a health club. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

Curry Health Network Choosing where to receive your care is never easy. Providing healthcare of the highest quality with genuine caring and compassion is the mission of Curry Health Network. Curry General Hospital is your community hospital; Curry Medical Clinic, Curry Family Medical, and Curry Medical Practice all fully support your community hospital. From Port Orford, to Gold Beach, to Brookings - we are community people providing quality healthcare, right near home. CURRY GENERAL HOSPITAL 94220 4th Street, Gold Beach 541.247.3000 New Hospital Serving the healthcare needs of the community for more than 60 years, Curry General has been called "a jewel among rural hospitals in Oregon" and we are known for our exceptionally compassionate and caring staff. We’re pleased and excited that our District citizens supported a ballot measure to build a new replacement hospital, expected to be completed in 2016. Emergency Department Our emergency department is staffed with highly qualified board-certified or board-eligible physicians who are on-site 24 hours per day, 7 days per week; and has earned a designation as a Level IV Trauma Center with 24-hour trauma surgeon availability. Hospitalists Our patients benefit from our unique Hospitalist program. What is a Hospitalist? If you are unfamiliar with the term, a Hospitalist is a doctor who is specialized in the care of patients in the hospital. Our Hospitalists provide 24/7 care, stay on site, and are available for staff, patients and family members by cell phone, even after discharge. They communicate with the patient's primary care physician, but handle their care during time spent in the hospital. They are available to meet with family
members, answer questions, follow-up on test results and order new ones if needed, and respond quickly to any arising issues. Hospitalists also coordinate the care of patients between different physicians. Our hospitalist program is uniquely better than most - rather than working 12-hour shifts, our Hospitalists work a 7 to 10-day shift resulting in fewer hand-offs of care between physicians, and improved quality of care. Surgical Services The hospital has on-staff Board certified specialists in General Surgery, Orthopedic, Urological and Gynecological Surgery. We also offer the services of visiting medical surgeons specializing in Pain Management and Ear-NoseThroat. We provide outpatient surgical services including colonoscopy, CT biopsy and other minor surgeries for urology and gynecology-related conditions. Laboratory Our Laboratory provides superior testing with personalized service, and has received CLIA's "highly complex" certification. It is staffed with certified medical technologists, technicians and experienced laboratory assistants. A pathologist/clinical consultant is available at all times. Specialized areas include hematology, chemistry, immunochemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, drug screen testing, blood gases and serology. Radiology / Imaging The Radiology Department has a wide range of imaging tools and technologies for early detection, examination, and diagnosis of illnesses and abnormalities. The staff works closely with physicians to accurately interpret results so each patient gets the best possible care. We offer CT Scans, XRays, Fluoroscopy, Digital Mammography, Ultrasound, MRIs, and Echocardiograms. Our radiologists are accredited by The American College of Radiology. The Mammography department is also ACR accredited, which is the Gold Standard in radiological accreditation and is widely
recognized as a hallmark of safe, quality care. Obstetrics / Gynecology We provide gynecological care to women in all stages of life, from annual exams to more complex problems. OB/GYN is staffed by experienced and caring family practice physicians and nurses. Telestroke With strokes, faster care can mean a better outcome. We’ve partnered with Providence Brain and Spine Institute to bring the most advanced stroke care to our patients with on-demand remote consultation with expert neurologists. Telestroke provides access to some of the region's top stroke specialists 24 hours/day. Swing Bed Our Swing Bed Program is an alternative to prolonged acute hospitalization or short term nursing facility placement for post-acute extended care, providing skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services which may include IV therapy as well as physical/occupational and speech therapy. Other Services Pain Management, Cardio Pulmonary Rehab, Coumadin Clinic, Dietitian, Intensive Care, Occupational Therapy, inpatient Pharmacy, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychiatry, Urology and more CURRY MEDICAL CENTER 500 5th Street, Brookings Primary Care – 541.412.2000 Nothing is more important in life than your health. READ WHAT SOME MEMBERS OF OUR FAMILY HAVE TO SAY ABOUT OCEAN PARK… Ocean Park is now my husband's home. Home is where the heart is & the staff and residents of Ocean Park are now his family and mine. One of the characteristics of a home is how the “family members” treat one another. Care & loving attitude are an integral part of life at Ocean Park & are displayed continually by the staff. My son-in-law, who is a surgeon, visited & was immediately impressed by the staff's knowledge of the personal needs & interests of those they were caring for. Home life at Ocean Park is displayed by the positive attitudes, energy, & warmth of the staff at a sometimes very difficult time in our lives. I always feel welcome there. ~ Michael & Joanne Massa
“My name is Marilyn Hart, and my husband, Robert, and I are so very happy with the care he gets at Ocean Park. The staff is so giving, knowledgeable, and friendly - it's like an extended ~ Marilyn Hart, Ph.D family here."

Maintaining physical and mental vitality into your Golden Years Let’s face it: Most of us won’t be running a marathon any time soon. The older we get, the less likely our bodies are able to handle some of the physical activity we could do as a youngster. But what you can do is replace the activities with something else that combines social activity and physical exertion. According to WebMD.com, emotional and mental vitality are closely tied to physical vitality; combining the two is the best way to help you keep a positive attitude and sense of well-being! Sea View Senior Living offers residents activities that encourage health and well-being through a full calendar of social, spiritual, educational, health and wellness programs. Here are some tips to help you continue or improve your physical, social, and mental activities,

Health & Fitness 2015 Lifestyle modifications that may reduce risk of cancer McClatchy-Tribune ST. LOUIS — Cancer can be seen as striking haphazardly, but research over the past 40 years shows that lifestyle factors play a huge role in cancer incidence and mortality. Dr. Graham Colditz, an internationally recognized disease-prevention expert at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, has put together a list of behaviors that greatly reduce overall cancer risk. And they’re not as complicated as you might think. For a healthy 2015, Colditz suggests starting with one or two from the list. Once you’ve got those down, move on to the others. 1. Maintain a “healthy weight It’s easier said than done, but a few simple tips can help. If you’re overweight, focus first on not gaining any more weight. That can give your health a boost. When you’re ready, try to take off some extra pounds. Tips: - Integrate physical activity and movement into your life. - Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. - Choose smaller portions and eat more slowly. For parents and grandparents: - Limit children’s TV and computer time. - Encourage healthy snacking on fruits and vegetables. - Encourage activity during free time. 2. Get screening tests A number of important screening tests can help protect against cancer. Some tests find cancers early when they are most treatable, while others can actually help keep cancer from developing in the first place. For colorectal cancer alone, regular screening could save more than 30,000 lives each year. Talk to a health care professional about which tests you should have and when. Cancers that should be tested for regularly: - Colon and rectal cancer
- Breast cancer - Cervical cancer - Lung cancer (in current or past heavy smokers) 3. Protect yourself from the sun While the warm sun feels great, too much exposure can lead to skin cancer, including serious melanoma. Skin damage starts early in childhood, so it’s especially important to protect children. Tips: - Steer clear of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (peak burning hours). It’s the best way to protect yourself. - Wear a hat, long-sleeved shirt and sunscreen with SPF15 or higher. - Don’t use sun lamps or tanning booths. Try self-tanning creams instead. For parents and grandparents: - Buy colored sunscreen so you can see if you’ve missed any spots on a fidgety child. - Set a good example for children by protecting yourself with clothing, shade and sunscreen. 4. Exercise regularly While it can be hard to find the time, it’s important to fit in at least 30 minutes of activity every day. More is even better, but any amount is better than none. Tips: - Choose activities you enjoy. Many things count as exercise, including walking, gardening and dancing. - Make exercise a habit by setting aside the same time for it each day. Try going to the gym at lunchtime or taking a walk after dinner. - Stay motivated by exercising with someone. For parents and grandparents: - Play active games with your kids, and go on family walks and bike rides. - Encourage children to play outside and take part in organized activities, such as soccer, gymnastics and dancing. - Walk with your kids to school in the morning. 5. Don’t smoke Quitting smoking is absolutely the best
thing you can do for your health. Yes, it’s hard, but it’s also far from impossible. More than 1,000 Americans stop for good every day. Tips: - Keep trying. It often takes six or seven tries before you quit for good. - Talk to a health-care provider for help. - Join a quit-smoking program. Your workplace or health plan may offer one. For parents and grandparents: - If you smoke, your children will be more likely to smoke, so try to quit as soon as possible. - Don’t smoke in the house or car. If kids breathe in your smoke, they may have a higher risk of breathing problems and lung cancer. - Talk to your kids about the dangers of smoking and chewing tobacco. A health-care professional or school counselor can help. 6. Eat a Healthy Diet Despite mounds of information that can be confusing, the basics of healthy eating are quite straightforward. Focus on fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and keep red meat to a minimum. Cut back on bad fats (saturated and trans fats) and choose healthy fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats). Taking a multivitamin with folate every day is a great insurance. Tips: - Make fruits and vegetables a part of every meal. Put fruit on your cereal. Eat vegetables as a snack. - Choose chicken, fish or beans instead of red meat. - Choose whole-grain cereal, brown rice and whole-wheat bread. - Choose dishes made with olive or canola oil, which are high in healthy fats. - Cut back on fast food and packaged snacks (like cookies), which are high in bad fats. 7. Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all Moderate drinking is good for the heart, but it can also increase the risk of cancer. If you don’t drink, don’t feel the need to start.
If you drink moderately (less than one drink a day for women, less than two drinks a day for men), there’s probably no reason to stop. People who drink more, though, should cut back. Tips: - Choose nonalcoholic beverages at meals and parties. - Avoid occasions centered around alcohol. - Talk to a health-care professional if you feel you have a problem with alcohol. For parents and grandparents: - Avoid making alcohol an essential part of family gatherings. - Discuss the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse with children when appropriate. Health-care professionals or school counselors can help. 8. Protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections Among other problems, sexually transmitted infections — like human papillomavirus (HPV) —are linked to a number of different cancers. Protect yourself from these infections. Tips: - Besides not having sex, the best protection is to be in a monogamous relationship with someone who does not have a sexually transmitted infection. - For all other situations, always use a condom and follow other safe-sex practices. - Never rely on your partner to have a condom. Always be prepared. For parents and grandparents: - When appropriate, discuss with children the importance of abstinence and safe sex. A health-care professional or school counselor can help. - Vaccinate girls and young women as well as boys and young men against HPV. Talk to a health professional for more information.

Surgio has been one busy robot instruments that mimic and miniaturize the surgeon’s movements. Compared with conventional surgery, patients bleed less, heal more quickly, and have less scarring. Dr. Steven Tersigni, the first local doctor to use the robot, said patients have been pleased with the results of robotic surgery, mentioning their quick recovery and minimal pain after surgery. “We’ve had a lot of good comments, Dr. Tersigni said. “I’ve been surprised by the lack of pain. David Geist, a registered nurse who coordinates robotic surgery at Bay Area Hospital, said the most impressive results are in prostate surgery. Patients undergoing radical prostatectomy with traditional methods stay in the hospital an average of 77 hours – just over three days. Patients undergoing robotic-assisted prostatectomy average just 32 hours in the hospital. The robot’s precision also reduces blood loss. When Dr. Tersigni uses the robot to dislodge an ailing gallbladder from its perch
under the patient’s liver, he often can avoid severing even the tiniest blood vessels. “I think that it’s the future,â€? he said. Dr. Hamilton observed the da Vinci Si’s benefits the first day she used it. When a patient strolled past her in a hospital corridor, Dr. Hamilton was startled to recognize the woman who had been on her operating table less than two hours earlier. Along with Drs. Tersigni and Hamilton, two other surgeons work with the robot: Dr. Stephan Groth and Dr. Leo Kusuda. Dr. Tersigni said the four surgeons have D become more adept as they’ve gained experience with the robot. They can work more quickly than they did at first, and they’ve expanded the kinds of surgeries they perform with the robot. The most common surgeries so far have been: • Hysterectomies (56) • Repairs of inguinal hernias (34) • Gallbladder removals (33)
• “Nissen fundoplicationâ€? surgeries to correct hiatal hernias and gastroesophageal reflux disease (30) • Prostatectomies (20) • Partial or total kidney removals (20) The robot’s second year at Bay Area Hospital promises to be even busier than the first. Hospital records show the robot saw So far in itsinsecond action about 14 times per month its first yyear on the job. So far in its second year, the monthly average has risen to nearly 19. The number is likely to grow as more surgeons begin using the robot. Two more surgeons are expected to join the current quartet within a few months. It is a well-known fact that sitting alone, at home, by oneself, is not healthy. Seniors must look to their future well-being with a goal of not just living longer, but living well. In order to ensure the best possible outcome, emphasis must be given to staying healthy, active and socially connected to others. Baby Boomers have started reaching their senior years and in zip code 97415 more than 36 percent of the population is older than 60. No one who has danced to rock and roll or burned a bra or promoted social equality or protested against a war is now willing to sit around in a recliner chair watching reality shows all day. Members of the Baby Boomer Generation are known for having positive attitudes and a social consciousness with a desire to contribute to social change and remain active for most of their lives.
It is imperative seniors find a place where they can gather with others who share their passions, hobbies, gifts and knowledge. By maintaining physical health through appropriate exercise, activities and diet, the body remains strong. The mind is kept fit by enrolling in enriching classes and lifelong learning programs, attending or participating in cultural and social events. Additionally, the senior citizen’s soul is strengthened by giving back through teaching, helping and sharing time with other people in volunteer activities. Determine today to strive for physical, mental and social health by taking care of your body, mind and socially-linked spirit; get involved and contribute to your community and have fun along the way. Talking about death

Death isn’t an easy topic, but it is important to discuss it. When developing financial plans, couples need to consider what will happen when one of them passes away. The Census Department reports that in 2009, 2.4 percent of all men were widowed and 9.3 percent of all women were. After age 65, 41.3 percent of women were widows. The death of a spouse isn’t a theoretical number: It’s something that could very well affect your family. As part of your financial plan, you should consider what will happen to your family’s income and expenses when one spouse passes away. If the spouse was working, that income will be lost; if the spouse was retired, the pension could be. Social Security benefits may make up some of the lost income, especially if there are minor children in the household. Expenses may go down, but don’t depend on it. If there are minor children, then childcare expenses are likely to increase with only one parent in the
household. If the family received its health insurance from the deceased spouse’s job, then those costs may rise. On the other hand, some of the deceased’s expenses will be eliminated. With retired couples, research by the Department of Health and Human Services on widows shows that household costs decreased about 20 percent when the husband passed away; in some cases, her income decreased by 50 percent or more when her spouse's income was gone. Careful planning for savings, pension elections, and life insurance may help your family avoid a financial crisis on top of personal sorrow. The proper option will be different for each couple, but the first step should be a discussion about what would happen should tragedy hit tomorrow. Health & Fitness 2015 Rejuvenation planning: Healthier How to improve your balance body starts with the brain as you age McClatchy-Tribune This new year you’ve decided to lose 25 pounds, restart your exercise program and de-stress. But isn’t that what you decided last year? To keep resolutions, we’ve got to break bad habits while slowly establishing new ones to replace them. Sports psychologist Gregory Chertok is director of mental training at Tenafly, N.J.based CourtSense. He outlines the following habit-forming strategies to achieve your health and wellness goals. Set specific, short-term goals. Saying “I’m going to lose 50 pounds” doesn’t offer much guidance, and without a road map, many of us lose motivation, Chertok said. Set attainable short-terms goals to guide you (such as join a health club, hire a personal trainer, work out three nights a week, cut out one dessert a week.) As you achieve these doable short-term goals, you’ll feel confident and willing to set more challenging ones. Goals should be in your control, Chertok added. We should be able to manipulate, adjust and accomplish them without reliance on someone or something else. Be realistic. A lot of us expect dramatic results after a few weeks or even a few days of small lifestyle changes and are discouraged when there’s little change. “It can take up to several months of dedicated, consistent behavior to see change,” he said. Arm yourself with realistic expectations, don’t be surprised by the occasional obstacle and temptation — and persevere. As long as your goals are doable, the results will come. Be aware of what triggers your bad habits and change them. One of the greatest challenges to breaking any habit is placing awareness on the trigger cues leading to the behavior. When the trigger cues are removed, the desire for the behavior can diminish. For instance, an exerciser may wish to take an alternate route home so he doesn’t pass his favorite
Savvy Senior restaurant (the trigger to stop and eat) or adjust his television package to avoid the temptation of late-night programming and ensure an earlier bedtime. As these new behaviors are repeated, they’ll slowly become ingrained and replace bad-habit behaviors, Chertok said. Get support from friends and experts. Knowing that someone is thinking about us and holding us accountable is extremely effective in sticking to new goals. Join an exercise class or exercise with a buddy who expects you to show up. Share your goals with friends and family. Ask for help. For example, ask co-workers or family to discourage you from making poor food decisions. A personal trainer and dietitian also will hold you accountable and support your exercise and diet program. Choose activities that interest you. Some people are more likely to adhere to exercise if they join a class or hire a personal trainer. Others operate better by themselves. “Based on your personality and temperament, craft the workout environment that’s most conducive to you. If you hate weightlifting, for example, don’t pick that,” Chertok said. “A lot of people think they have to exercise in a particular way, but if you’re not engaged from the start, that’s a red flag. Pick something you enjoy.” Develop self-efficacy. If you don’t think you’re capable of running a 10k or losing 20 pounds, why bother? Self-efficacy is believing that you have the tools to take on and succeed in a particular situation or challenge. One way to build self-efficacy, according to Albert Bandura, the pioneering psychologist who developed the theory, is through modeling. If we see someone similar to us run a marathon, we might think it’s possible for us to do it too. Look for inspiring stories (books, videos) about people like you who’ve reached their goals.
As we age, our balance declines – if it isn’t practiced – and can cause falls. Every year more than one in three people age 65 years or older fall, and the risk increases with age. A simple fall can cause a serious fracture of the hip, pelvis, spine, arm, hand or ankle, which can lead to hospital stays, disability, loss of independence and even death. How Balance Works Balance is the ability to distribute your weight in a way that enables you to hold a steady position or move at will without falling. It’s determined by a complex combination of muscle strength, visual inputs, the inner ear and the work of specialized receptors in the nerves of your joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons that orient you in relation to other objects. It’s all sorted out in the sensory cortex of your brain, which takes in the information from those sources to give you balance. But aging dulls our balance senses, and causes most seniors to gradually become less stable on their feet over time. Poor balance can also lead to a vicious cycle of inactivity. You feel a little unsteady, so you curtail certain activities. If you’re inactive, you’re not challenging your balance systems or using your muscles. As a result, both balance and strength suffer. Simple acts like strolling through a grocery store or getting up from a chair become trickier. That shakes your confidence, so you become even less active. Balance Exercises If you have a balance problem that is not tied to illness, medication or some other specific cause, simple exercises can help preserve and improve your balance. Some basic exercises you can do anytime include: · One-legged stands: Stand on one foot for 30 seconds, or longer, then switch to the other foot. You can do this while brushing
your teeth or waiting around somewhere. In the beginning, you might want to have a wall or chair to hold on to. · Heel rises: While standing, rise up on your toes as far as you can. Then drop back to the starting position and repeat the process 10 to 20 times. You can make this more difficult by holding light hand weights. · Heel-toe walk: Take 20 steps while looking straight ahead. Think of a field sobriety test. · Sit-to-stand: Without using your hands, get up from a straight-backed chair and sit back down 10 to 20 times. This improves balance and leg strength. For additional balance exercises visit go4life.nia.nih.gov, a resource created by the National Institute on Aging that offers free booklets and a DVD that provides illustrated examples of many appropriate exercises. You can order your free copies online or by calling 800-222-2225. Some other exercises that can help improve your balance and flexibility is through tai chi and yoga. To locate a beginner’s class in your area that teaches either of these disciplines, call your local senior center, health club or wellness center, check your yellow pages or try online directory sites like americantaichi.net and yogaf inder.com If nothing is available near you, there are DVDs and videos that offer tai chi and yoga instructions and routines for seniors that you can do at home. Some good resources for finding them are amazon.com, collagevideo.com and ief it.com, or check with your local public library. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

community to engage in hands-on opportunities to explore, taste, and learn about the importance of eating fruits and vegetables and being active every day. Resources provide the opportunity for collaboration among many partners and stakeholders, including educators, school nutrition staff, school administrators, students, parents, farmers, retail outlets, work sites, SNAP offices, after-school programs, and more - all of whom are striving toward the goal of increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables and increasing physical activity among low-income Californians. Think of your body as the vehicle that takes your spirit where it wants to go, the vehicle that we drive through this adventure called life. Similar to automobiles, our bodies need maintenance and good driving to last as long as possible, get us where we’re going, and give us the joyride of our lives. We need to operate safely at high speeds, navigate rough roads, go long distances, keep cool and keep our wheels on. Simply put, maintaining our whole being allows us to live life to the fullest. Most people cruise around with bodies like beat up Chevys. That’s okay because there is no time like the present to begin restoration. Think of yoga teachers as mechanics who can give you the right tools to make repairs.
Physical movements lubricate joints and muscles. Breathing exercises recharge the batteries. Relaxation cools, calms, and prevents overheating. Highoctane food fuels motion and power. Meditation and positive thinking clears and focuses the mind that is driving, also making it easier to read the maps of intuition. We’ve all heard that it’s not the destination but the journey that matters most. Make yours the best you can by frequenting your local yoga body shop to tune up, top off, and realign from life’s potholes and speed bumps. Thanks for sharing the road in this grand caravan. Now let’s crank it up, open it up, and enjoy the ride! Submitted by Sarah Hundley, CMT, CYI - Cloud Nine
