Festival Schedule The 76th Annual Azalea Festival — “Go Wild at the Coast” — is a long-standing community event that continues to be led by the Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce as it has been for 76 years. The city of Brookings and other community partners contribute to the event’s success. The fun begins with an exciting parade. Announcements, introductions and entertainment follow at the beautiful Azalea Park, including the traditional shrimp feed. The Street Fair, located in Downtown Brookings, hosts vendors, a petting zoo, large inflatables and other family-friendly entertainment. Carnival rides are a short stroll from the action with your favorite rides and games. More festivities include the Party at the Port, an Art Show, Car Show, Quilt Show, Flower and Plant Sale, delicious barbecue, Pie Sale, and more!

Festival queen and court By Bill Schlichting Pilot staff writer

Adelaide Fitzgerald, daughter of Ted and Sharon Fitzgerald, was crowned Azalea Festival queen at the Azalea Scholarship Pageant May 8 at Brookings Church of the Nazarene. Presenting the crown and red cape was 2014 queen Michaela George. Master of Ceremonies Les Cohen, retired Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce executive director, announced the winner. Serving as first runner-up is Courtney Watwood, daughter of Skip and Becky Watwood. Fitzgerald was also chosen by the judges as winner of the talent competition. Watwood won the award for most tickets sold and was chosen Miss Congeniality by her peers. Judges were Roger Meader, Becky Ross, Sheralee Couch and Carol Byers. Judges scores were tabulated by Clar Byers. The event opened with a dance presentation by princesses Fitzgerald, Watwood, Kimberly Medina, Iva Hart and Brittney Lamar. Medina is the daughter of Fabiola Medina and Juan Ruiz, Hart is the daughter of Chris and Nicole Hart and Lamar is the daughter of Jason and Paddi Lamar. Each princess then presented their talent, beginning with Medina performing a lyrical dance with Camarea Freeman, who performed all of Medina’s movements as though an image in a mirror.

Hart sang a medley of three songs accompanied by her 8-year-old sister, Alana, on piano; Lamar performed on cello accompanied by Brookings-Harbor High School staff pianist Virginia Riddle; Watwood performed a slow country song dedicated to her family; and finally, Fitzgerald presented an original song titled “Ghost Town, which she sang while playing piano. When the princesses donned street attire, Cohen introduced the names of their parents, their future plans and career goals. When the evening gown attire was presented, each princess was asked a question that required an impromptu answer. During this phase of the competition, the princesses showed

a curtsy and were escorted by members of the U.S. Coast Guard Station Chetco River — Anthony Cisneros, Benjamin Martin, Edward Collins, Travis Hooper and Joseph Bonanno.

Between presentations, entertainment was provided by Brookings-Harbor High School’s Grace Notes and Sea Breeze. Following the pageant, a reception was held in the church fellowship hall.

Festival history The year 1939 was a happening time in the Brookings-Harbor area with the formation of the BrookingsHarbor Chamber of Commerce and the dedication of Azalea State Park. The chamber’s first president, William Crissey, along with the board of

directors, proclaimed that when Samuel H. Boardman, state parks superintendent, was to come to Brookings to dedicate the park, there should be a big celebration to go with it. The annual Azalea Festival was born.

in September 1942 by Japanese fighter pilot Nobuo Fujita), travel was restricted, and the festival was suspended until World War II came to an end. When the nation was at peace, the Azalea Festival was revived, a queen was to be crowned, a Wild Hog Barbecue again held, and dances at the Grange Hall were planned. The fledgling Pilot newspaper, which began publication two months before the 1946 festival, announced plans for the return of the festival, which was advertised in both Sunset and Holiday magazines as “a ‘must’ on itineraries for May. Looking back at the success of the three festivals before the war, Pilot editor and publisher Dewey Akers published an article asking for people who may have room for guests, because of a shortage of motel rooms, to contact him as he was making a list of accommodations. The 1946 festival, referred to in the newspaper as the eighth, was planned and ready to go. Rain didn’t dampen festivities. Queen-elect June Schrader was to be crowned at the park, but the event was moved to the high school gymnasium because of rain, according to Schrader, who is now June Hart and served with her husband, Cecil, as pioneer citizens at the 2014 Azalea Continued on Page 13

According to the book, “Then till Now, a history of Brookings-Harbor, organizers went all out in planning the first festival, which took place in May of that year: It included a festival queen and a Wild Hog Barbecue, dances and a banquet. The wild hog, provided by Herbert and Henry Payne, was displayed in a pen. A domestic cousin was barbecued and later the wild hog was returned to the wilderness, according to the book. Marshall Dana, president of the Portland Chamber of Commerce and editor of the Oregon Journal newspaper in Portland, was the keynote speaker at the banquet. Reigning as queen over the festival was Martha Hassett, who was chosen by a community vote and was crowned immediately before Boardman dedicated the park. The success of the festival brought organizers together earlier to begin planning for the 1940 event. Fundraisers began in February with a dance. The festival was planned with many of the same events. The second event was more successful, with an estimated 2,000 people attending from as far away as Portland and Los Angeles. A festival took place in 1941, but later that year, invasion by Japanese forces seemed possible (and the mountains east of Brookings were bombed

Festival. The Wild Hog Barbecue continued in the park as the rain subsided, and 1,500 people were served. It was estimated that 2,000 people attended the festival, according to the Pilot. New for the 1946 Azalea Festival was the first flower show at the Grange Hall, which was hosted by the Azalea Garden Club. Capping the day’s activities that year was a dinner beginning at 11:30 p.m. following a dance. Festivities ended at 1 a.m., according to a festival program in the history book “Chetco. Once again, earlier planning made the festival bigger in 1947. For the first time, the festival was held for more than one day, a softball game was added between teams from Brookings and Crescent City, and a street fair and carnival took place on Azalea Park Road, stretching the event from the high school to the park. That year, lily growers in Harbor saw the success of the Azalea Festival

and decided a similar event could be used to promote the industry. Lily Blossom Time took place in July and introduced a parade to Brookings. Although the general public preferred the Azalea Festival over the lily festival, the rivalry continued, even though there was talk of de-empha-

sizing the Azalea Festival because of the importance of the lily industry. Through hard work and much effort the Azalea Garden Club has convinced people of southwest Oregon and northern California that the festival flower show is an institution of note. This area is famous for its

flowers. To pick one flower for exploiting over all others will not do the community justice as far as Oregon and other states are concerned. ... The Azalea Festival is not tainted with commercialism — it is a display of nature as only this community knows, according to “Then till Now. By 1954 the Azalea Festival had become a major event, and residents were beginning to feel that staging the Azalea and the Lily festivals was too large a burden for a small community to carry any longer. Following a community vote, the Lily Blossom Festival was shifted to Smith River, where it was staged until its demise in the 1980s. The last weekend in May was fixed as a permanent date for the Azalea Festival and from that point, the festival became the main event for Brookings-Harbor, with an annual parade added and events taking place throughout the community. In 1972, the Chetco Valley Historical Society added the selection of a pioneer citizen.

Festival pioneer citizens By Bill Schlichting Pilot staff writer

In the Chetco Valley Museum and reprinted in other sources is a photo of what is now the Port of Brookings Harbor. There are two barns in the photo as well as the remains of the railroad trestle crossing the mouth of the Chetco River. Across Lower Harbor Road from the barn in the foreground is a little house. In 1933, this was the house where Bev Stoller was born. Stoller and her husband Gradie “Dee” Sanders have been chosen by the Chetco Valley Historical Society as the Pioneer Citizens for the 76th Azalea Festival. Bev Sanders, who was born to Clarence and Diva (Fitzhugh) Stoller, lived in the little house, where Blue Water Cafe now sits, with her mother and father until she was a teenager. She recalls a swamp between the house and the ocean, the Chetco River cutting a new mouth anywhere between where it exists now and where Best Western Beachfront Inn now stands. When the river became bar-bound, she remembers several people, including Bud McVay’s son, Archie, with hand tools, digging through the sand to drain the lagoon formed by the blocked river. The family did business with neighbor Bud McVay, whose family donated much of the property which the Port of Brookings Harbor now occupies, and knew the pioneer Van Pelt family. Bev could also walk to the only store in Harbor — which was then known as Chetco — Hanscam’s Center. The Sanders family moved upriver for awhile, but when the bridge over the North Fork washed out, they had to move back into town into an apartment above the Nook Cafe. Bev worked at the Nook Cafe. It was here she met Dee Sanders, who

moved to Brookings from Klamath Falls. They got married when she was 17, but the union only lasted four years. Single again, Bev worked at many restaurants while her father purchased and operated Ken’s Tavern for many years. In addition to working in restaurants, Bev worked at bulb farms, peeled chittum, picked berries and eventually did many jobs for her cousin, Jess Fitzhugh, one of three co-founders of Tidewater Contractors.

Meanwhile, Dee returned to Klamath Falls where he worked as a railroad engineer, operating a locomotive on a short line to Bly. Dee remained close to Bev’s parents. In 1971 Dee and Bev married for the second time and it stuck. The couple lived in Klamath Falls until he retired in 1980. They moved back to Brookings. The Sanderses never had children themselves, but have children from previous marriages. Bev has four children, one in Klamath Falls, the other three in Alaska. Dee has

two children, both of whom live in Arizona. The couple also have seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The couple will be riding in a float during the Azalea Festival parade beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 23, will be introduced at the park program at 1 p.m., will be presenting awards and festival shows and will be available for the public to meet them during a Pioneer Citizen’s reception at 4 p.m. at the Chetco Valley Museum.

change of dry clothes,” Shepherd said. Only one person is allowed per boat, and participants must be at least 10 years old. There is a $15 participation fee. Brookings resident Doug Lewis has participated in the races since they first started three years ago. “There’s a lot of different categories you can win,” he said, recalling some elaborate, artistic constructions, including a Viking ship. “It’s not always about going the fastest.” Lewis, however, favors streamlined, speedy boats, most of which take him about a day to build. He won last year’s race, and is eager to see some competition this year. “It’s really entertaining to the crowds,” he said. For more information, contact Shepherd at 541-469-2218.

Speed, durability and creativity will again be on display as participants get ready for the third annual Cardboard Boat Regatta. Event Coordinator Danielle Shepherd of the Port of Brookings Harbor said registration for the race, which takes place Saturday, May 23, during the Party at the Port, will start at 11 a.m. on the public docks. The race begins at 3 p.m. Boaters will race between the north jetty and the boardwalk. If there are enough participants, there will be multiple heats. “The cardboard needs to be corrugated — people can use blocks or tubes of cardboard,” Shepherd said. She added that participants can use binding agents such as duct or masking tape, wood glue, liquid nails, latex paint or varnish. “You have to be able to bail yourself out of a boat, and have a
