Two women appear to be on a shopping spree at Brookings Presbyterian Church bazaar.

Bazaar success Organizers pleased with sales of crafts, plants and food It’s official. A special Christmas is fast approaching, illustrated by what many planners, vendors and customers who attended the bazaars and other sales Saturday had to say. All groups reported successful events. The grand event was the 41st annual Brookings-Harbor Community Christmas Bazaar. All were in agreement that this year’s bazaar was the biggest and best one ever. The Azalea School gym and Brookings-Harbor High School were packed with shoppers checking over the booths offering a variety of crafted Christmas items. In addition to the bazaar that has been the harbinger of Christmas, other nonprofit groups tagged on activities to enjoy the advantage of the influx of shoppers in town. Across the street, the fellowship hall at Brookings Presbyterian Church was also packed with shoppers and munchers, enjoying a variety of food and festive items for sale. On the other corner, the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall was filled with displays of hobbies, including the monumental hat collection of Rick Bremer. Judges were busy tasting and testing chili entered in a cookoff, while VFW members were barbecuing just outside the door. Down the road a bit, at the Masonic Lodge, Brookings-Harbor Garden Club members had a spread of green and growing things. Comments from first-time vendors at the Christmas Bazaar included, “It went so well,” from Marian Gamba, who was selling her soft knit head and neck bands. “I sold 40 pieces I was so pleased and people seemed to like them and I met so many people.” Two other vendors new to the bazaar had similar comments. Virginia Frizzle said, “I did enjoy it. I had great fun and met lots of people. Everybody was so organized, the food was delicious, everything was excellent.” Danielle Doyle’s recap included, “I had a great time. There were so many people, a really great response from the community. I was busy all day. It was quite a success.” Others, who have been a part of the bazaar since its early days, agreed that the 2010 bazaar was a rollicking event. Vangie Andreason, one of the original three bazaar planners, said, “Someone from out of town who called back about an item, said that it was a great bazaar and they will be back next year.” She added that a couple selling baskets said they did better than any time in the last three years. Long-time bazaar planner and promoter Peggy Goergen said, “The crowd was steady all day. We still had customers at the 5 o’clock closing time. We sold less food because so

A shopper looks over crafts at Saturday’s Brookings-Harbor Community Christmas Bazaar booth inside the Azalea Middle School gymnasium. many others were selling food, but many said it was the best chicken casserole ever.” Goergen emphasized that the credit for this year’s bazaar food goes to AMSDC, the Azalea Middle School D.C. group that works to raise money for the eighth graders’ trip to the capitol in June. Goergen explained that the other extension group that has partnered in organizing the bazaars over the years has disbanded and when they looked for help they found Donna Fleshman and AMSDC. Fleshman, who noted that the students must each raise $1,500 to fund the trip to Washington, D.C., said the students and parents stepped in to prepare the chicken casserole, gelatin salad, hot rolls, and homemade pies always served at the bazaar. The students, dressed as elves, served lunch to vendors, many of whom must single handedly cover their booth or table all day long. Plans for next year’s bazaar are already being discussed. Andreason said, “We’ve limited it to 100 vendors because that was all we thought we could accommodate, but I think we might be able to make room for six or seven more.” See Sales, Page 2B

Pilot story and photos by Marjorie Woodfin Bonnie Bremer prepares to served chili at VFW cookoff.

Imagine a sandy beach in a cove. Tree-covered islands just offshore break most of the waves on a calm, sunny day. The edge of the beach is lined by a bluff, protecting the sand from the harsh elements. A creek flows to the edge of the bluff and cascades to the sand before the water makes its way to the ocean. This is the description of a small piece of paradise. Its location may be hidden to many, but for those who enjoy a short, steep hike, or following a couple of longer trails, the above-described beach is no secret. I have driven past the unmarked trailhead to Secret Beach many times. On more than one occasion, I have even parked in the unknown pullout and stood at the trailhead. It wasnt until recently that I made the trail my destination. The day I went wasnt the best of days to hike. It was foggy in Brookings. My hopes soared when I came upon blue skies at the top of the Cape Ferrelo hill. It turned out that the 400-foot summit was above the fog and I was about to descend back into the gray muck. The 345-foothigh Thomas Creek Bridge was shrouded in fog and I continued to see the grayness as I passed the Wridge Creek Refuse Disposal Site. Those are fancy words for “the dump.” Opposite the entrance to the dump is a guardrail. Immediately after Highway 101 crosses Miner Creek, the guardrail ends. There is a narrow place to drive off the road and a place to park behind the guardrail. The trailhead to the beach is marked by the usual beach rules sign. I followed the trail, which is an abandoned bulldozer road (more commonly known as a cat trail). About halfway down the hill, I could hear the sound of rushing water. I find a spot to peek through the bushes to see an beautiful waterfall. From the highway to the falls, Miner Creek follows a concrete flume. When Highway 101 between Brookings and Pistol River was built in 1961, a lot of concrete was used to keep streams from eroding the roadbed. The highway is build to last! I continued down the hill and came to the mainline Oregon Coast Trail. I continued a short way to find paradise. The last section of the trail involves walking down a rock. I stop on top of the rock and imagined the scenery, unshrouded by fog. Even though visibility was only 300 yards, it was still gorgeous. Miner Creek made its final tumble to the ocean just below the rock I was standing on. After enjoying the solitude, I hiked a bit south on the Oregon Coast Trail, which crosses Miner Creek at another waterfall. Turns out there are three. I hiked until I got to the top of the Wridge Creek canyon. I turned back. From the trail, which follows the top of the bluff above Secret Beach, I enjoyed more vistas. When I returned to the cat trail, a couple were standing on top of the rock at the end of the trail, above the beach. I left them their solitude and hiked back to the top. Perhaps next time, Ill chose a sunny day and, just for the fun of it, take off from either the trailhead to the north or the south. ~~~ Bill Schlichting is features editor of the Curry Coastal Pilot. Sales: Gardeners raise $3,200 Continued from Page 1B

Garden Club Country Store chairwoman Barbara DeMoss said that the country store made more money this year — $3,200 — which is to be used for upkeep and additions to their Botanic Garden on Highway 101 and other gardens they tend throughout the community. De Moss noted, “We did very well and were especially pleased with our sales of succulents, and bulbs and seeds.â€? She added, “We’re busy planting and we look forward to our big plant sale in May.â€? Bonnie Bremer provided results of the VFW Post 966 chili cook-off. She reported that judges Post Commander Jim Thebaut, John Brazil, Bob Leach, and Marcie Muro awarded first place to Brookings-Harbor Redshirts Red White and Blue Chili; second place to Jan’s Chetco CafĂŠ Chili by Bill Lucas, third place to Brookings Emblem Club 265 Peace and Love Chili. The Post Commander’s Choice award also went to the Redshirts.

Shrubs helps stablize slopes, prevent erosion Recently, I’ve received a number of calls and emails asking about plants that prevent erosion on slopes. So, I’ll catch them all up and try to make some helpful suggestions. You want to select plants that not only anchor the soil, but also look good year round without a lot of work, and keep the weeds to a minimum. That’s a big order, but there are many such plants. Before you begin planting that slope, there are some “must do’s” that will insure success. •Never till the soil on a slope. This will only loosen the soil and promote further erosion. •Take care of any water runoff, especially from up slope. In rainy weather, it can wash your plantings away, or compromise their roots, cause washouts and scour soil from the slope. An area may require ditching or the installation of drainage pipe to carry the water away.

Growing Your Garden JERRY HOLCOMB

•Eradicate all weeds before planting. Spray persistent ones with an herbicide and/or dig out all roots. Certain plants, such as Himalayan blackberry, poison oak, and others, may be near impossible to eliminate permanently, and you may have to continue to fight them even after the slope is covered with new plants. Diligence is the key, getting them while they are small. •Work composted organic matter into the top six inches of each planting hole to give new plants a head start. This also helps retain a degree of moisture, though you may want to plant shrubs that require little summer water.

•If you decide to use landscape cloth to keep down weeds, lay it in place before planting. Secure it with large ground staples. Lay landscape material in an up and down pattern rather than laying it across the slope. Mark where each plant will be, then cut an X, fold back the edges of landscape cloth, and dig hole for planting. After planting, layer three to four inches of mulch over entire surface. This helps with moisture retention, suppresses weeds and dresses up the appearance. •If your slope is straight up and down (or nearly so) think about terracing for easier planting and to prevent washouts. Plant on the terraced area rather than on a steep slope. •A drip system is the most satisfactory way to water such a planting, because you want the water on the plant only. •Avoid succulents such as ice plant because they have

shallow roots and become heavy. They can tear away, taking soil and all down slope. Here are several plants that work well for slopes. They are deep rooted, and most root where they touch the soil, thus forming large clumps which help stabilize the slope. A low-growing sumac, rhusaromatica Gro Low, is a rugged shrub that reaches only about two feet high. It can spread up to 8 feet. Leaves turn bright red in the fall. Here’s a spot for those wonderful honeysuckles, even Halls, which is the most rampant, and the most fragrant. On some slopes they can be allowed to grow freely, providing both color and fragrance, as well as smothering most weeds. Golden St. John’s wort (hypericum) is another shrub that can make a slope secure. Other species of hypericum are also suitable for slopes. One I like has varie-

gated leaves. St. John’s Wort flowers on new growth, so to keep it tidy and colorful, prune in early spring. Dwarf forsythia courtasol Gold Tide grows to only 18 inches and spreads. You can expect at least a five-foot wide display. Other forsythias are not suitable for slopes. Jasmine polyanthum is an evergreen vine that displays clusters of fragrant white blooms with burgundy outside several times each year. Many gardeners grow this on a trellis or fence, but left unsupported, it forms a dense ground cover. Branches will root as they touch moist soil. Another plant, commonly called star jasmine, but not a jasmine at all, is trachelosperum. Its thick growth of shiny green leaves and summer-flowering clusters of fragrant blooms makes it a favorite. If you have a soggy spot, perhaps at the base of the slope, you might want to

plant a new summersweet called Sixteen Candles (clethera alnifolia). Its upright, white blooms give it its name. It’s considered an improvement over other clethera which have more drooping flower spikes. It grows three to five feet tall and can tolerate any wet spot in the landscape. Another work horse plant on slopes is chenault coralberry. It won’t wow you, but it effectively smothers out most weeds, grows only two feet tall, controls erosion and can spread to ten feet. So, if you have an awkward slope you want to cover and control, try one or several of these plants. ~~~ “Pacific Coastal Gardening” is Jerry Holcomb’s newest book. Civil Air Patrol celebrates 69th anniversary Brookings Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Squadron 105 is planning to take part in celebrating the 69th anniversary of the organization on Dec. 1. The CAP, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, was established Dec. 1, 1941, just six days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. CAP started to carry bombs and depth charges in their small single-engine aircraft when German submarines began to prey on American ships along the Atlantic Seaboard. When the war was over, CAP airplanes were credited with attacking 57 German submarines, hitting 10 and sinking two. Since its beginning, the organization has set itself apart during the country’s most tumultuous times: assisting rescuers and state agencies immediately following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and heavily supporting hurricane relief efforts, most notably during the 2005 hurricane season. The organization provides homeland security missions that help ensure the protec-

I have lived in Crescent City eight years. I’m 31 years old, married and have two small daughters. On August 2nd of this year, I suffered a stroke… While I have a family history of heart attack and stroke, I still didn’t think this would happen to me. I’ve been vigilant with doctor exams and cholesterol checks. I’m thankful that Sutter Coast Hospital has the medical technology necessary to treat me immediately, allowing for a full recovery. Since that time, with diet and exercise I have lost over fifty pounds. I’ve been a stay at home Dad since July of this year, following seven years with US Cellular. While I look forward to my next career venture, I’m enjoying time with my family with a renewed appreciation for them and life!

Life Saving Intervention and Treatment Sutter Coast Hospital Emergency Department (SCH ED) partnered with California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) to create the first telemedicine program at SCH ED. The program was developed in response to the quick identification and treatment of stroke that is needed for patients to have a good outcome.

real telemedicine machine was physically connected. Since the actual telemedicine connection was established on July 1, 2010, many patients have been treated and can now stay at SCH and receive their care and hospital stay under the direction of Dr. Tong and his group of neurologists.

David Tong M.D. FAHA, Medical Director-CMPC Center for Stroke Research and the group of neurologist first began working with the ED two years ago to establish a best practice program in regards to stroke care and to establish the tele-medicine program where patients suffering from a stroke can be seen by a neurologist immediately and have life saving intervention and treatment.

The program is founded on evidence based guidelines for stroke care and meets the standards set out by the American Stroke Association. Each nurse in the ED has received initial training and is going through on-going training to recognize and treat stroke patients under the guidelines of the program. This program is paving the way for the other telemedicine programs to be brought to SCH to enhance patient care in the emergency setting and is a great asset to the department and to the community.

Initially patients were treated and transferred to CPMC until the

Moments in Time •Nov. 30, 1886: The Folies Bergère in Paris introduces an elaborate revue featuring women in sensational costumes. The theater spared no expense, staging revues that featured as many as 40 sets. Among other long traditions, the show’s title always contains 13 letters and includes the word “Folie.” •Dec. 5, 1933: The 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, repealing the 18th Amendment and bringing an end to the national prohibition of alcohol. Mississippi, the last dry state in the

Union, ended Prohibition in 1966. •Dec. 4, 1945: In an overwhelming vote of 65 to 7, the U.S. Senate approves full U.S. participation in the United Nations. Some senators proposed a resolution designed to force the president to receive congressional consent before approving U.S. troops for any U.N. peacekeeping forces. The resolution was defeated. •Dec. 1, 1955: In Montgomery, Ala., Rosa Parks is jailed for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus to a white man, a violation of the

city’s racial segregation laws. Parks’ refusal was not merely brought on by her tired feet, as is the popular legend. Local civil-rights leaders had been planning a challenge to Montgomery’s racist bus laws for several months. •Dec. 3, 1967: 53-year-old Lewis Washkansky receives the first human heart transplant in Cape Town, South Africa. After surgery, he was given drugs to suppress his immune system and keep his body from rejecting the heart. He died 18 days later from double pneumonia.

Delay in treatment of TIA is dangerous DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’ve just hung up the phone after talking to my doctor. He has me scared out of my wits. This morning while reading the newspaper, I couldn’t hold it up. My right arm became weak. In about five minutes, everything returned to normal. I thought I had better call the doctor to see if this was serious. The doctor thinks I had a ministroke and wants me to have someone take me to the hospital ASAP. I told him I was fine. He said that doesn’t matter. I thought I would drop you a line for your opinion. I trust your judgment. What should I do? — T.R. ANSWER: I hope you listened to your doctor. You should do exactly what he told you. You have an emergency on your hands. You most likely had a TIA — a transient ischemic attack — a ministroke. Investigation should be taking place as soon as possible — immediately. A part of your brain lost its blood supply for a short time. Even a brief occurrence like the one you describe can cause permanent brain damage. Worse, it is often the foreboding of a complete stroke. You have to be checked for a blockage in one of your carotid arteries, the large neck arteries that deliver blood to the brain. You have to be examined for a clot in other body locations like the heart. Pieces of those clots can break loose and be carried to a brain artery, where they stop the flow

To Your Good Health PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D.

of blood permanently. Atrial fibrillation, a common heartbeat disturbance, is often responsible for such clots. Numbness, weakness or both of a hand, arm, leg, side of the face or tongue can be a sign of a TIA. Trouble expressing oneself is another sign. So are disturbances of vision. None lasts long, but they are quite significant and serious warnings. I don’t have important background information on you. I am counting on your good sense to get you to the hospital quickly. The booklet on stroke, one of our most feared illnesses, covers the topic in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 902W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ~~~ DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My grandparents never took vitamins and never talked about them. They both lived into their late 90s. Everyone I know takes vitamins, including me. Why? — C.N. ANSWER: Vitamins are

nutrients essential to body health and body chemistry. They’re needed only in minute amounts. No vitamin is made by the body except for vitamin D. We must get them from foods. Although the body does make vitamin D, many older people and quite a few younger ones are deficient in this vitamin. Your grandparents got their vitamins from eating a well-balanced diet. We could do the same. Vitamin-taking is a new wrinkle in human history. It does assure people that they’re getting the recommended daily intake of vitamins. Is it absolutely necessary? Probably not, but most do not get their daily dose of all vitamins through foods. ~~~ Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
