Lights Lights in the Night Night

The Capella by the Sea, animated lights, decorated greenery and a manger scene highlight this year’s Nature’s Coastal Holiday.

Nature’s Coastal Holiday open through Christmas Eve in Azalea Park More than 300,000 lights are adorning Azalea Park for the 14th annual Nature’s Coastal Holiday show open nightly through Christmas Eve. This year’s show is dedicated to the memory of Don Tilton, a longtime show organizer who died Thursday after a year-long illness. The show opened the following night as scheduled. The show is scheduled to light the park from 5 to 9 every evening. Admission is $1. In addition, special-effects glasses are available for $1. Children 12 and younger are admitted free. Cookies and hot apple cider are served at the Snack Shack. New this year is a lighted path to the Capella by the Sea, which will be open — depending on the availability of volunteers — in conjunction with the show.

A tunnel of lights becomes a place for people photos.

An arch leads to the Jubilation sculpture as well as two paths through a lighted garden.

A rock is decorated along the pathway within the Azalea Park gardens.

The other day, I craved a salad with all those wonderfully different greens, some with a spicy or savory taste or texture. But my budget went into shock when I reached check-out. I knew it was time to plant a potted garden that would provide greens for the rest of the winter. And with little time and effort you can have one, too. Select seeds for your favorite greens — various kinds of lettuce, arugula, mustard, cress, spinach and others give a fabulous mix. Best of all, you harvest the leaves by cutting them when they’re a few inches tall, and the plant keeps producing all winter. Water weekly (or put outside in the rain), and cut often so plants won’t bolt and form seed heads. You can extend your salad bowl by making successive plantings in separate pots. Select a pot at least 16 inches in diameter, but shallow. Plastic pots such as those used for fuchsias work well. Fill with a mix of garden and potting soil to form a light mixture that is worked fine. Sow seeds according to package directions. I prefer to section the pot in a piewedge fashion, with one variety per section. Water by sprinkling lightly. Covering the pot with Remay (row cover cloth) will keep out insects and aid in germination. You can attach copper self-adhesive tape

Growing Your Garden JERRY HOLCOMB

(available in garden centers) around the pot to deter slugs and snails. Either hang the pot or place in a sheltered spot. Plants in a traditional planting in the open ground would need to be thinned to several inches apart, but when pot-grown, it’s best to crowd them a bit to form a thick stand of leaves. The varieties of greens that can be grown in this manner is almost endless. Start with some of the oakleaf lettuce varieties such as Territorial’s “New Red Fire,” an intense red-leaf lettuce, crisp and sweet, and very bolt resistant. The brightest red of all is a new one called “Revolution.” For contrast, plant “Pom Pom,” which forms a beautiful mass of green. A unique maple-leafed French variety called “Brunia” has red-tinged edges, remains crisp and is slow to bolt. Among loose-leaf lettuces, one called “Red Sails” excels. Green leaves are crinkled, deeply fringed and touched by burgundy. It almost never gets bitter. A delicate flavored lettuce

is “Simpson Elite.” Leaves are so crumpled and curled, it makes a statement on the plate. Try a butterhead called, “Tom Thumb” which forms a head about the size of a baseball. But you need not wait for any of these to head — in fact it’s best not to — simply snip off some leaves when they’re about two inches tall, thus thinning the plants. My salad must have romaine. I like one called “Little Gem,” which forms miniature heads about four inches in diameter. This is one lettuce I pot separately and allow to head, although it, too, can be early snipped. Other romaines to try include “Deer Tongue,” with thick, succulent lime-green leaves or “Freckles,” a green romaine with speckles of red — interesting in the salad. But don’t limit your salad to lettuce. Experiment with some of the European greens offered through seed catalogs. Arugula has a peppery twang that livens up a salad. The plants tend to bolt, so it’s best to give this one its own pot and sow in small batches every few weeks. When I was a child, we regularly cut wild dandelion greens, both for salad and to eat cooked as a green. While you may wince at the idea of planting dandelions, it’s one of the most healthful vegetables around, and adds a special taste to salad.

Lions selling calendars at Gold Beach bazaar Brookings-Harbor Lions Club benefit calendar sales have passed the halfway mark. Just prior to Thanksgiving, 541 calendars had sold out of 1,000 available for purchase, said Joan Willis, Lions Design Team coordinator. Gift shoppers will have an opportunity to buy the calendars during the Christmas Community Bazaar in Gold Beach Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4 and 5. The bazaar will be in Docia Sweet Hall at the Event Center on the Beach, 29392 Ellensburg Ave. The calendars will also be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at Fred Meyer in Brookings. In addition, the calendars, which cost $10, are available during business hours at A Wild Bird and Backyard General Store, Boardwalk Mail Services, Book Dock, Brian Scott Gallery, Brookings Liquor Store, Feather Your Nest, Flora Pacifica, Kathy’s Corner Market, Manley Art Center and Gallery, Precision Eye Care, The Salty Dog Coffee Bar, Sweet Pea Confections and Collectibles, Village Express Mail Center, Winchuck Gardens, Words and Pictures, and Wright’s Custom Framing and Art. Mountain cress or pepper grass has a piquant flavor and takes only 14 days to harvest. Give purslane its own pot and combine two varieties, Garden and Golden, for a succulent addition. It takes longer, about 50 days to maturity, although, again, snip it early on. You will find these superior to the wild purslane you may have tried. To keep your salad bowl simple, try one of the gourmet “mesclun” salad blends. Seeds have been specially blended for specific tastes. Spinach was made for salad — especially the baby leaves. Try Olympia and grow it in a separate pot. Begin snipping when leaves are about an inch across. It’s best to combine varieties in a pot that mature in about the same length of time. All greens are thirsty growers, so keep them constantly moist for best results. Don’t let them grow too large — the idea is to snip while young and keep them growing over a long period. ~~~ “Pacific Coastal Gardening” is Jerry Holcomb’s newest book. Its mission is to offer practical information to those who garden in coastal climates. It’s loaded with color photos. Holcomb is happy to answer gardening questions. Amber Waves

Moments in Time •Dec. 19, 1732: Benjamin Franklin of Philadelphia first publishes “Poor Richard’s Almanack.” The book, filled with proverbs preaching industry and prudence, was published continuously for 25 years and became one of the most popular publications in colonial America, selling an average of 10,000 copies a year. •Dec. 17, 1843: Charles Dickens’ classic story “A Christmas Carol” is published. When Dickens’ father was thrown into debtors’ prison in 1824, 12-year-old Charles was sent to work in

a factory. The miserable treatment of children and the institution of the debtors’ jail became topics of several of Dickens’ novels. •Dec. 18, 1886: The oftencontroversial baseball legend Ty Cobb is born in Narrows, Ga. In 1911, he led the league in eight offensive categories, including batting (.420), slugging percentage (.621), hits (248), doubles (47), triples (24), runs (147), RBI (144) and steals (83), and won the first American League MVP award. •Dec. 13, 1915: Detective novelist Kenneth Millar, better

known by his nom de plume Ross Macdonald, was born in Los Gatos, Calif. He wrote 24 mystery novels, 20 of them featuring detective Lew Archer, who first appeared in “The Moving Target” (1949). •Dec. 15, 1944, legendary bandleader Glenn Miller (also a captain in the U.S Army Air Corps) disappears over the English Channel en route to France for a congratulatory performance for American troops who had recently helped to liberate Paris. The wreckage of Miller’s plane was never found.

Coumadin is effect but bothersome drug DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past eight months, I have had a heart rhythm problem. I am on Coumadin. One day I forgot I had taken it and took another dose. My blood test showed that I had taken far too much. You wrote about ablation being a treatment for rhythm problems. Would it benefit me, and could I go off Coumadin? — W.K. ANSWER: I’m sure your rhythm problem is atrial fibrillation, a common and serious heartbeat disturbance where the heart beats rapidly and irregularly. One consequence is a drop-off in the amount of blood pumped by the heart. The second, and the more dangerous consequence, is the formation of clots in the upper heart chambers because blood in those chambers isn’t moving — stagnant blood forms clots. Clots in the heart can be swept into the circulation and to the brain, where they block a brain artery. The result is a stroke. Coumadin prevents those clots from forming. Many times, the goal in treating atrial fibrillation is only to slow the heart so that it pumps out an adequate blood supply. Are there other ways of dealing with this rhythm problem? Yes. Ablation is one. It involves eliminating the heart tissue generating the abnormal rhythm. It’s done by inserting a thin

To Your Good Health PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D.

tube that’s outfitted to deliver radio waves to the specific heart sites from which the abnormal beating arises. Does it sound simple to you? It isn’t. It’s very intensive work, and requires special training. Generally, ablation is restricted to those younger than you, but not always. I’m on your side when it comes to taking Coumadin. It’s a bothersome drug, requiring frequent blood tests to be sure that enough drug is taken but not too much. Too much poses the danger of bleeding. Talk with your doctor about having a consultation for ablation. The doctor might side with you, or tell you that you’re not a candidate for the procedure. At least you’ll have the satisfaction of having tried. The booklet on heartbeat abnormalities, including atrial fibrillation, discusses them, their significance and their treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 with the recipient’s printed name and

address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ~~~ DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I think my husband is an alcoholic. He drinks far too much. He’s not abusive, but his consumption of alcohol is more than a six-pack of beer a day, and sometimes whiskey. He usually falls asleep in a chair. My sister tells me the cage test can diagnose alcoholism. What is it, and where can he get it done? He won’t talk about these things to me. — C.L. ANSWER: It’s not a lab test. It’s four questions. They are: 1. Have you ever felt the need to cut down on your drinking? 2. Are you annoyed when people criticize your drinking? 3. Do you ever feel guilty about your drinking? 4. Have you ever taken a drink first thing in the morning as an eye-opener? Two “yes” answers indicate alcoholism. It’s a simple but reliable test.
