A fashionable event CC’s Clothes for Cancer, Sea View residents benefit from fashion show If you ask Maggie Graham, Bill Peck, the approximately 160 guests, or any of the models, they’ll all say Thursday’s Sea View Fashion Show was an entertaining success. Graham was the major planner behind the show, Peck was the master of ceremonies, and the models were: Carol Jennie, Linda Broderson, Judy Stopley, Lois Ferguson, Theresa Wentzel, Myrlin Chesson, Helen Donahue, Pat Bisgrove and Kidd Stubb. The “Dress Up for the Holidays” fashion show, jointly sponsored by the newly-organized Sea View Residents Council and CC’s Clothes for Cancer, included music by pianist Vivian Titus. The fashions ranged from a robe and jammies to slinky night-on-the-town styles, in all sizes. Many of the garments being shown were purchased by those in attendance — some literally right off the backs of the models. Part of the entertainment portion of the show included hearing a little about the lives of Seaview residents. In spite of some minor technical difficulties with the sound season, and the challenges faced by the food service in serving such a large crowd, the laughter and applause, plus the “oohs” and “ahs,” indicated that everyone was having a good time. There was some confusion as models worked their way between two separate parts of the dining area, but they were careful to stop at every table where a guest in-
‘We cleared about $790 for the council and $240 for CC’s.’ — Maggie Graham dicated a desire for a closer look. Theresa Wentzel, of CC’s Clothes for Cancer, said she thought it was a great success. “We sold a number of garments and accessories,” she said. Then she laughed and added, “And nobody yelled at us for making too much noise in the dressing room.” The day after the show, Graham worked hard to calculate how much of the proceeds would be made available to the residents’ council for future activities and to CC’s for aiding those with cancer. “We cleared about $790 for the council and $240 for CC’s,” she told the Pilot. In addition to the enjoyment and entertainment provided by the fashion show, Graham said it was also a wonderful opportunity for residents to get to know more about each other. “It was an excellent turnout,” she said. “And the main thing is, it was a fun event.”
Bill Peck talks to audience about what money raised will be used for.

Ken Olsen, a third-grade teacher at Kalmiopsis Elementary School, was named teacher of the month for October by Daryn Farmer of State Farm Insurance, in cooperation with other sponsors. Olsen has been teaching third grade for seven years — all at Kalmiopsis. “The kids are the very best part,” Olsen said. “They come to school eager to learn, and they want to do their best. It never feels like a job to me when I get to spend all day with great kids. “It’s an honor to be nominated by one of your students. It makes you feel like you’re doing a good job when a student takes time to nominate you, and it’s so nice to have businesses and individuals in our community who take the time to make this happen.” Olsen was nominated by his student Zack Walker. Every month, a teacher from Kalmiopsis Elementary School or Azalea Middle School is nominated by a student and chosen for the award. Olsen also receives $25 in Coffee Cash from Dutch Bros., while Blockbuster Video is donating a $10 gift card to Zack
Walker. A student who wishes to nomimate a teacher for the monthly award may pick up a ballot at any of these locations: Azalea Middle School library, Kalmiopsis School library, Wild River Pizza, Blockbuster Video and KURY radio station. Strange But True •Historians report that Napoleon Bonaparte, when he wasn’t busy conquering, enjoyed ice skating. •Those who are frightened
of bugs might not want to know the following tidbit: There are 10 quintillion insects alive on the planet. • According to a survey
conducted by the Pew Research Center, the home appliances Americans consider to be the most essential are clothes washers and dryers.
Fleas aren’t the only cause of itching DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My Pom/Pekingese mix, “Debbie,” really scratches and bites at her fur a lot, but when I inspect her, there are no fleas that I can see — nor even the flea “dust” you described in a previous column. I bathe her regularly, but it doesn’t seem to help. My husband thinks she scratches just to spite us. Do you have a solution? — Dottie K., Irving, N.Y. DEAR DOTTIE: Debbie’s not scratching to “spite” you; she’s scratching because she itches. The cause of her itch doesn’t have to be fleas. She may have allergies or dry skin. Scratching and biting at areas that are bothering her can make the problem worse, not better, especially in the case of dry skin (or even a skin disease that’s developing, unseen). The first thing I would recommend is to stop bathing her so frequently, at least for a while. When you do bathe her, use a bath soap specifically made for dogs, and ideally for dogs with sensitive skin. The soap

Last year during Advent, a bad thing happened to my family. I think I can talk about it now. For a year I shoved it into a dark hole and refused to look at it, because it hurt like dull knives. I had saved the requisite several hundred dollars for Christmas shopping over a period of months — quite a feat on our income — and we were on our way, a rare trip with the whole family, to Portland where we would stay overnight, visit with relatives and shop for the perfect Christmas gifts. Somehow, even though I never carry my purse, I ended up leaving it in a gas station restroom along the Interstate 5. There is no happy ending to this story. The money was never recovered and I spent the bedraggled, broken trip back home weeping like an in-

sane woman in the back seat of the mini-van. I have rarely been so angry at myself. There is however a very joyful ending to this story. At some point my middle daughter, Gemma said, “Mom, what have you always said Christmas is all about?” She was right, but it was so hard right then to accept. Readers of this column will recall that I usually write an anti-materialism rant about this time of the year. Well, this is all very fine to espouse when the means to material goods are there. stripped away put us to the test, and my beloved children and husband scored much higher than I. God eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present, pure love, immeasurable in all quantities, chose to become a completely helpless infant, shivering on a bed of straw because somehow His becoming like me would raise me up to him, and I find it rather stunning that someone who believes this could even blink when the packages are taken away. No wonder we Christians have trouble convincing the atheists. St. Augustine said of God, “My heart is restless until it rests in you.” When our happiness is connected to things, we will forever be aching for something more. Joy is different from happiness. Joy is knowing that God is in love with the human race. It does not depend on having lots of things, or money or power or friends or health. It depends on knowing who you are in God’s eyes — eternally important, just little you. There is no true joy outside of knowing God. Many people want to know God on their own terms — God you are great, but stay over there please, or God you are great but gimme the goodies now. My youngest remarked randomly one day, “I wish I could be a fish eaten by God.” She gets it. This intense desire for God, to be completely consumed by God, is written on every person’s heart. To fill that God shaped hole with anything but a pure abandonment to the love of God, is to be forever — wanting. ~~~ Valerie Cowan is director of religious education and youth leader for Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 820 Old County Road, Brookings. ORCA Singers, sponsored by Southwestern Oregon Community College, invite the public to its 13th annual holiday concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1200 Easy St., Brookings. The concert has become a holiday tradition for many who live along the Southern Oregon Coast. “We’ve made a change this year,” said ORCA Director Charlotte Heatherly. “We have moved our concert from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon. We are hoping that it will allow people who don’t want to drive after dark an opportunity to attend. “And we should finish up just in time for people to perhaps go out into the community and have dinner at one of our fine eateries. We want it to be a festive, holiday celebration.” The program this year will include some old favorites, like “Silent Night” and “O Holy Night” as well as some new numbers, like a jazzy version of “Snowfall.” “Themes this year seem to be food and snow,” said Heatherly. “It’s appropriate, don’t you think? Holidays always bring out special recipes and those once-a-year dishes. I want our audience to come and reminisce about all the Christmases they’ve seen and enjoyed. “If our music can spark a memory, then we have achieved part of our mission. What I really would like to

The free show will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Port Orford Community Center, 419 11th St. Those who attend are asked to bring canned food and nonperishables for the local food banks. The performance will bring to life a Grimm brothers’ tale about Donkey, Cat, Rooster and Dog. Cast out of the farm that was their home, the foursome hit the road to the big city. Along the way, they encounter opportunities for fame and fortune, outsmart robbers and finally find the home they seek. Beginning the day after Thanksgiving, Dell’Arte takes the play for a threeweek tour through Northern California and Southern Oregon.

Former Harbor resident celebrates 100th birthday

Fern Hannaford of Ashland celebrates a century of living.
Fern Hannaford recently celebrated her 100th birthday at the Ashland home of her daughter and son-in-law, Signa and Jay Fischer. The Fischers, whom Hannaford has lived with for the last 10 years, recently moved from Harbor to Ashland. Twenty-four friends and family members, including her other daughter, Betty Flick of Cosmopolis, Wash., celebrated the milestone. Hannaford had three birthday cakes: a chocolate cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese frosting from the Fischers; her favorite Kentucky bourbon fruitcake from granddaughter Sharon Kanna of Brookings, and a deluxe chocolate cake from another granddaughter, Dina Riepe of Port Townsend, Wash. Hannaford was born Nov. 19, 1910, in Medford and lived most of her childhood in Reece Creek. When she was 19, she married a Navy man, Ed Hannaford, in Med-

‘I’m just amazed, that’s how I feel. I can’t imagine it really happened. I certainly never wanted to live to be 100. Hah! 100 years old!’ — Fern Hannaford ford and subsequently lived many places, including Washington, Texas, Virginia and China. But she lived most of her life in Washington and Oregon. She and Ed later divorced and she never remarried. When she was 25, she and her 1-year-old daughter Signa (Fischer) took a slow boat to China to be with her husband who was stationed in Shanghai. Fischer said when the Japanese attacked Shanghai in 1937, they were killing all the civilians. “All the U.S. dependents were evacuated out of there onto Navy ships. Two miserable weeks on the ship I was seasick. I was 3; I remember it very well,” Fischer said. Hannaford said they were a little ways from Shanghai so she wasn’t afraid. “But we were glad to be getting out of there, I’ll tell you that.” One thing Hannaford remembers vividly happened after the dependents had been sent to a town up the coast before they were shipped out. “There was bombing all over,” she said, “and I looked up and saw this bomb, and it was just floating down, and then there was this big eruption. There was no noise at all, it was so far away. “Next thing we knew, we were on our way to good ole’ America,” she said. When asked how it felt to reach American soil, Hannaford said, “Wonderful! Absolutely. Best part of my life.” She held several different jobs over the years, but her favorite was working as a cook in a hospital in Shelton, Wash., for about 25 years, until she retired at 73. Her family agrees she’s a wonderful cook. She remembers making everything from scratch: no instant mashed potatoes, no frozen breaded fish, no canned pie filling. She recalled the time she knew a doctor who loved her peanut butter pies, and how she made one just for him. “He and the women who worked with him came down to the kitchen to thank me for that, and he kissed me on the cheek,” Hannaford said. Hannaford loved to knit, and made many afghans for family members and vests for her granddaughter, Sharon Kanna. “It was a nice thing to do, just sit and knit away,” Hannaford said. She also made colorful wool braided rugs. Kanna said she still uses one her grandmother made about 40 years ago. Hannaford’s favorite, among the many inventions that came into being during her lifetime, is the car. “They’re absolutely unbelievable — what a change from a horse and a buggy and a wagon,” she said. “We rode horses to school, and here they have buses to pick
children up for school.” She remembered an incident from her childhood when she and her older brother, Merle, rode their horse to school. “The horse bucked my brother and me off,” she said. “The horse came home alone; my dad came looking for us.” She recalled the first car owned by her father, Wilber Jack, a 1920 Ford. “When you needed to turn on the windshield wiper, you had to do it yourself (manually).” When asked what she thinks about living to 100, she said, “I’m just amazed, that’s how I feel. I can’t imagine it really happened. I certainly never wanted to live to be 100. Hah! 100 years old!” She has no idea what she did to live that long. But her granddaughter, Sharon Kanna, said she eats pretty well. “Until recently,” Kanna said, “she cooked her own oatmeal, and she eats it most every morning. She eats cottage cheese, prunes and other fruit. She faithfully sprinkles flax seed on her food.” Also, Kanna added, the Fischers (Kanna’s parents) have taken good care of Hannaford the last 10 years. “And my dad,” she said, “does the cooking and makes wonderful meals for them,” Kanna said. “He’s a great cook, so my grandma’s very lucky to live there.” “And until very recently, grandma walked regularly up and down their long drive in Harbor with her walker. And she’d stand by her bed and jog in place,” Kanna said. “Everybody who meets her says she’s an amazing woman, both physically and mentally.” Hannaford is a voracious reader and always has a fresh stack of books next to her chair. She also does crossword puzzles and word searches. “She loves clam chowder and was always on a quest for the best clam chowder in town,” Kanna said. “I took her to many restaurants on that quest. She liked Smuggler’s Cove’s. She was also fond of The Hungry Clam’s, so my mom would pick her up some and bring it home for her to enjoy.” She loved living on the ocean in Harbor. Her large bedroom window gave her a spectacular ocean view, Kanna said. Hannaford said, “It never got too cold or too hot — it was just an ideal place in every way... “I sure had a nice time when my family came down on my birthday,” Hannaford said. “It was so nice to see everybody. Some relatives I haven’t seen for ages, so it was a real treat.”

Stout Mountain Railway Club will present “Holiday Station” in Brookings-Harbor Shopping Center, located between Pharmacy Express and Shop Smart. The display, which is free to the public, will be open daily, from noon to 6 p.m., Dec. 10 through Dec. 24. The club will create an indoor model railway display for the holidays featuring large “G” scale trains. Sponsors will have their buildings decorated for the season and will be part of a large winter wonderland. Featured displays will be Thomas and Friends, Hogwarts Express, North Pole Express, trolleys and egg liners, and freight,
logging and passenger trains. New sponsors are welcome. The name of a sponsoring business or individual will go on a scale-model building for $250, on a model train car for $200 and on a scale-model vehicle for $100. Sponsors’ scale-modelsized signs will be seen during model train events at the Stout Mountain Railway Garden in Stout Park throughout the year and in videos on YouTube; google: “Brookings Christmas Trains” to see last year’s train videos on YouTube. To sponsor or volunteer, contact Tony Parrish, 541469-0551 or e-mail: tonyparrish@frontier.com.
