Lighting the park Rain or shine, the volunteer elves will go to work in Azalea Park today, beginning to transform the formal gardens into the temporary wonderland called Nature’s Coastal Holiday. You’re welcome to join in the fun; we will be there until mid afternoon. If you have ever put up your own holiday lights, you know the chores involved. There are old lights to test and sort, new lights to unpackage, and extension cords to untangle. You also know the realities of working outside at this time of year. Bring your rain gear, rubber boots and gloves, because it could be wet and cold. Then again, dress in layers, because the sun could break through to make it a really pleasant day. It’s my 24th year of helping with a public holiday lights display. A friend got us involved in the very first event at Shore Acres State Park outside Charleston. (If you have never gone to see it, make plans.) When we moved to Brookings, the Nature’s Coastal Holiday event was just starting up. It wasn’t too hard to get involved. Even with all that experience, starting to actually string the lights was somehow intimidating. What color lights? On which branch of which bush or tree? Plugged into which extension cord, which is plugged into which power stake? At home, most of us now have a fairly set routine of which lights go where. It’s the stuff of which holiday traditions are built. Growing up, for example, my job always included the red and white lights around the edges of the roof. Meanwhile, my more agile brothers climbed the trees which always hosted our homemade star and angel sculptures. Now, in our own home, I’ve got a set of special lights that I always use for the same rhododendron every year, and my own homemade star has a traditional spot on the roof that makes it visible to traffic on North Bank Chetco River Road. As the years go on, some of that same tradition works into the public displays, and often with very good reasons and results. Nature’s Coastal Holiday started with strings of pink and white lights that mimicked the spring colors of the century old azalea bushes, for which the park is named. Strings of white lights twined in garlands line the sidewalks to guide crowds through the park, keeping feet off the spring bulbs that can start to poke through in December. Ropes of green lights strung vertically help create the illusion of walking down into an Undersea Garden. The animal sculptures that are a crowd favorite will all be back at Azalea Park, but the crew that places them tries to move them around every year so that you never know where the wolf, bear or coyote might be hiding. Those traditions, however, only cover a small portion of the overall work. For much of the park, there is no preplanned design or map of where to put what. There still comes a time when someone — it could be you — has to decide what color lights should go on which bush, or how the lights should be strung or wrapped on which tree. In all those small decisions, coupled with hours of effort, the magic of the show is created.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard from Station Chetco River performed a variety of duties at veterans’ homes.
Future veterans help those who served By Arwyn Rice Pilot staff writer
An energetic work gang from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Chetco River helped spruce up the homes of three lucky vets in the Brookings area on Veterans Day. By the time the hard-working crew left, gutters were cleaned, bushes were trimmed, walls were power washed and yards were mowed — leaving the homes shipshape — including that of Coast Guard veteran Charles Fuller, 86. “It’s fantastic,” Fuller said. “It’s such a blessing,” his wife, Doris, added. Fuller served in the Coast Guard during WWII on patrol boats in the Mediterranean Sea, from North Africa to the South of France. He was involved in the invasions of Cicely, Italy and France. During that time, Fuller witnessed a liberty ship break in half, and, while serving in Texas, experienced a rollover during a fierce storm. Today’s Coast Guard doesn’t look much like the one in which he served, Fuller said. “It has changed immensely. They have all this technology,” he said. The Veterans Day service project was a result of the efforts of Petty Officer Class Edward Kaava who organized the event. “He’s been working on this for the last two or three months, finding people to help,” Chief Cheston Evans said. The 20-member work team consisted of station personnel and the crew of one of the station’s motor lifeboats.

U.S. Coast Guard veteran Charles Fuller and his wife, Doris, are surrounded by a team of volunteers from the Chetco River Coast Guard station. In addition to helping at the Fuller home, the group visited Vietnam War Army veteran Sam Vitale and a third, unnamed veteran, Kaava said. The first time the coast guardsmen held a work party at a veteran’s home was two years ago. Last year, three vet-
erans in Port Orford were the grateful recipients of the Chetco Station’s attention. The annual event will continue each year on Veterans Day, Evans said, and may be expanded to include more days each year.
U.S. Coast Guard volunteers dig a trench to make improvements at a veteran’s home. A Coast Guard volunteer uses a string trimmer to cut grass along steep terrain outside Chuck and Doris Fuller’s home.

I have lived in Crescent City eight years. I’m 31 years old, married and have two small daughters. On August 2nd of this year, I suffered a stroke… While I have a family history of heart attack and stroke, I still didn’t think this would happen to me. I’ve been vigilant with doctor exams and cholesterol checks. I’m thankful that Sutter Coast Hospital has the medical technology necessary to treat me immediately, allowing for a full recovery. Since that time, with diet and exercise I have lost over fifty pounds. I’ve been a stay at home Dad since July of this year, following seven years with US Cellular. While I look forward to my next career venture, I’m enjoying time with my family with a renewed appreciation for them and life!

David Tong M.D. FAHA, Medical Director-CMPC Center for Stroke Research and the group of neurologist first began working with the ED two years ago to establish a best practice program in regards to stroke care and to establish the tele-medicine program where patients suffering from a stroke can be seen by a neurologist immediately and have life saving intervention and treatment.
The program is founded on evidence based guidelines for stroke care and meets the standards set out by the American Stroke Association. Each nurse in the ED has received initial training and is going through on-going training to recognize and treat stroke patients under the guidelines of the program. This program is paving the way for the other telemedicine programs to be brought to SCH to enhance patient care in the emergency setting and is a great asset to the department and to the community.
Initially patients were treated and transferred to CPMC until the

Strange But True •Snakes are sometimes born with two heads, but they don’t survive long. It seems the heads fight each other for food.
•It might be worthwhile to remember that the typical holiday meal contains more than 3,000 calories. It also might be
worthwhile to remember that the suggested daily intake of calories for men is 2,500; for women it’s 2,000.
Cat goes everywhere but the litter box DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My house cat “Snowball” has been having problems urinating in places other than her litter box. She loves rugs, towels, my daughters’ beds, pillows and even her own bed. The vet suggested getting another litter box. She now has two. She will urinate on something within 1 foot of a litter box. I read in your column that cats that do this could have a urinary-tract infection or diabetes. Snowball was treated for six weeks for a urinary infection and still continues to urinate outside of her box. I took her back to the vet to be tested again for urinary-tract infection and diabetes. Both tests were negative. The vet thinks she’s just mad at us. I’m tired of this happening. Any suggestions? — Michelle S., via e-mail DEAR MICHELLE: There’s usually a good reason for a cat urinating regularly outside the litter box, and being “just mad” is probably not one of them. You did the right thing by having her checked and treated for a urinary tract infection, and checked for more serious diseases, so you’ve eliminated a physical issue that may have
she starts urinating anywhere other than her box, simply pick her up and place her in the box. Use soothing, encouraging language. She may be associating the box with the pain of her urinary-tract infection, so you need to reintroduce her to it.

initiated the problem. Now it’s time to address the behavioral issue — which has nothing to do with Snowball resenting you, but more to do with an association she’s formed. First, get rid of both litter boxes (yes, the new one too). Thoroughly clean the area where they were located, and then get a new box. Next, monitor Snowball closely. As soon as

Blessings affect givers, receivers Mary Baker Eddy starts out by saying in her textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, on page vii, “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings. Blessing is not just the good that comes to us. It can also be the good we send out as we go about our daily lives. In “The First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany, (p. 210), Eddy talks about keeping our minds filled with truth and love. She says this benefits not only us, “but all whom your thoughts rest upon. She called good thoughts an “impervious armor. In pondering this recently, I remembered that several years ago my grandmother was on a city bus in Portland. As the bus stopped to let her off, she heard an ambulance race by with sirens blaring. She
paused just long enough to think about who might be in the ambulance and the people waiting to help that person once they reached the hospital. Her heart went out to all of them in love and gratitude. She thought about everyone involved being embraced and encompassed by God’s love. She was blessing them, in other words. As happens occasionally, the bus had stopped in the right hand lane of traffic rather than pulling up to the curb. A car was trying to squeeze between the curb and the bus just as

Home health name change prompts logo contest Because Curry County Home Health & Hospice will be changing its name in the middle of 2011, it’s seeking a new logo to go with the new name. Beginning July 1, the organization will be known as Coastal Home Health & Hospice. At that time, the agency
will no longer be affliated with the county and will become an independent, non-profit organization. Staff, volunteers — and members of a new board that has been governing the agency — are working to assure the same quality services which have been provided to the community since 1967 will continue. One of the first steps completed was choosing a new name. The entire community assisted by submitting names that represented the agency’s mission and vision. Now, it’s time to design a logo that will depict that new name, Coastal Home Health & Hospice. Artists and designers of all

ages are encouraged to submit their concept design for use by Coastal Home Health & Hospice. The logo will be featured on all media material used by the agency. The agency recommends that the logo be simple, describable, memorable, scalable, effective without color, timeless, versatile and relevant to the health care industry. All designs or design sketches must be submitted by Dec. 10 to the Curry County Home Health & Hospice offices located at 29984 Ellensburg Ave., Gold Beach; 306 Wharf St., Brookings; or 1403 Oregon St., Port Orford. Designs may also be mailed to
