Breakdowns bring new opportunities There are lots of moving parts in putting together a newspaper, and when any of them go awry, it can create real havoc for us. Several of those major parts have broken down in the past few weeks, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we fix them. Since every good crisis comes with opportunities, I can report that several good things have been happening in the background. Newspapers are one of the last businesses still operating that manufacture a new product with every edition, and still offer home delivery. Our readers come to expect that product — in print and online — as a regular part of their routine. Both those systems have suffered trouble in recent weeks. The late delivery of the Pilot’s print edition has been caused by several challenges. There isn’t enough room here for the entire list, which ranges from election returns to broken vacuum pumps. One of the changes, however, is exciting. Our parent company, Western Communications, has expanded the press capacity at the Smith River Printing Plant. The result is increased capacity for printing more pages in color, as well as new printing press units that should improve the overall quality of our reproduction. As a result, we’ve moved the normal position of our sports pages so they can routinely feature color photos. We’re also trying a new pricing system for color advertising so our clients can use more color. The new press units come on top of a huge investment earlier this year in new technology both at our office and at the printing plant. Combined, the improvements — and the disruptions — have been considerable. The second major problem came when the equipment hosting our website failed last weekend. The outage came just as the Pilot’s website had attracted record traffic — more than 13,000 visitor sessions in one day — because of the sinkhole near city hall. It has taken all week to retrieve data for the eight newspapers involved, recreate some of the materials that were lost, restore it all in a new system, and get it back online. In the meantime, we learned from many, many phone calls how much some people rely on our website for information. We sent out a Pilot News Alert by e-mail to 1,900 readers, but that did not begin to touch the 37,300 people who visited our website in the past month. To work around the outage, we also learned some new ways to put news and information from the Pilot online. We have been posting the pages of the main news pages, in their original form, at www.issuu.com. Once at that website, search for Curry Coastal Pilot and then choose the date or section you want to see. Some of our special sections are there, too. We have also launched an official Curry Coastal Pilot page on Facebook, where we can post information on a regular basis. How much and how often remains to be seen. In the meantime, as always, thanks for your patience and your patronage.

Bringing warmth for the holidays

Emblem Club begins collecting coats By Marjorie Woodfin Pilot staff writer Members of Brookings Emblem Club 265 gathered at McDonald’s on Thursday, Nov. 18, to announce the beginning of the club’s 2010 Coats for Kids program. The women placed a red plastic barrel in the restaurant to collect donations of jackets to keep children warm this winter. Emblem Club president Carolene Archuleta said additional barrels will be placed in banks and stores to collect jackets for children of all sizes and ages until Dec. 31. She said she thinks this is the fifth year the club has been providing coats for kids. “We deliver them, as needed, to all schools in Curry County and Smith River,” Archuleta said. “We also work with Oasis women’s shelter, Community Action, the Outreach Gospel Mission and other groups to make sure children in this area don’t suffer in the cold winter weather. “We also work with the Head Start program to provide hats and gloves to the younger children if needed.” Emblem Club Coats for Kids chair, Cleo Curtis, said Kerr’s Ace Hardware donated the barrels. Archuleta said the program continues to grow; this year’s goal is to collect and distribute 400 coats. “The first time we did this, we distributed 38 coats,” she said. Curtis urged all residents and visitors to look for the red barrels at U.S Bank, Evergreen Federal, Chetco Federal Credit Union, the Elks Club, McDonald’s and Fred Meyer. “Please donate as many good, warm, clean jackets as possible to help keep the children warm,” she said. The Emblem Club’s other community action programs include

Upcoming fashion show benefits activities for Sea View residents By Marjorie Woodfin Pilot staff writer A “Dress Up for the Holidays” fashion show and lunch, sponsored by the residents council at Sea View Senior Living Community and CC’s Clothes for Cancer, will be Thursday, Dec. 2. Models will strut down the aisle displaying fashions for all ages and sizes, beginning at 12:30 p.m., at Sea View. It will be the first fundraiser for the newly formed residents council that was started by Sea View residents to support social and entertainment activities. Council member Maggie Graham is coordinating the fashion show with Teresa Wentzel, manager of CC’s. “It’s going to be an exciting show,” Wentzel said as she was helping to fit models last week. Attendees will have the opportunity while they dine to “feel the goods” as the models stop at tables to allow close-up inspection of their garments. A special meal will be prepared under the supervision of Sea View’s food service director and chef, Rob Krebs. Two grand prizes will be awarded: a fishing trip for four, and a catered dinner for eight at Sea View. “Dress for the Holidays” tickets cost $10 and are available at CC’s and Sea View in Harbor, and Words and Pictures and Chetco Pharmacy and Gifts in Brookings. Mission seeks donations for food baskets By Marjorie Woodfin Pilot staff writer Most Brookings-Harbor residents will be celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday Thursday, Nov. 25, with festive, abundant meals. But some may not, unless the community heeds an urgent SOS sent out by Outreach Gospel Mission (OGM). OGM has traditionally provided Thanksgiving baskets filled with turkey and trimmings for those in need, but this year, the pickings are slim, according to OGM board member Don Sparlin. Speaking on behalf of the board, Sparlin said the need for donations is urgent and immediate. Although he wasnt on the board last year, he estimates about 400 baskets were given out. The need is even greater this year because donations are down due to the econ-

omy. With Thanksgiving just days away, additional donations are still needed to fill the gap. All donations are welcome, whether food or cash, Sparlin said, but at this late date, money will make it easier for the mission to buy the most needed items. He asks that donations be delivered to OGM at 15701 Highway 101. He said the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts are having a food drive today (Nov. 20). Everything they collect will be delivered directly to OGM. With time running out, he asks that generous donations be made when the scouts come by. Food appropriate for Thanksgiving dinners is desperately needed, and the scouts will also accept checks made out to Outreach Gospel Mission. Sparlin said donors may enjoy the holiday meal more knowing theyve made life a little sweeter for others.

Corrections On Page 1B of the Wednesday issue of the Curry Coastal Pilot, two people were misidentified in caption. In the garden club photo, the man looking at plants is Jim Benson. In the chili cookoff photo, although the name tag says Bonnie Bremer, the person is Kathy Lupo. The Pilot regrets the errors.

Faith Forum SANDY KOEPKE

We’ve been having those kinds of emotions through the election season — how could we have dealt with that? Oh — and our egos would like to have a hand in our reactions, too. Picture the ego getting us all riled up and feeling furious. Blood pressure goes up, the heart is pounding, emotions are strong and we start judging the other person and/or situation. The ego was helpful in promoting our fight-or-flight reactions but

now it needs to be controlled. One of our abilities that separate us from animals is the ability to process information and reason our way out of situations. Now, whether we use that ability or not is a critical decision. We’re creating our life as we go, and whether we create smoldering anger or use our reason to reach for peace is entirely up to us. Again, how to best do that? Probably our best tool for exercising control is meditation. Find a quiet place, enjoy silence or soft music, give yourself time to just relax, and allow your body to sink into reverie. Meditation quiets the mind and allows us to live in the moment. This creates space in our consciousness

where awareness of Divine Spirit removes the stress of those emotions which judged and created conflict. We can step back from angry words, fist fights, the voter’s booth, or sulking. With Divine Spirit, emotion and intuition are aligned and we can move into prayer, which brings the highest manifestation of peace and love. Divine Spirit comes in, and through meditation and prayer, Divine Spirit stays with us. ~~~ Sandy Koepke is the Prayer and Care Team leader of Unity Spiritual Center in Brookings, which meets at the Masonic Lodge, 416 Azalea Park Road. Fish fry benefits Cape Ferrelo Fire Department By Marjorie Woodfin Pilot staff writer The Cape Ferrelo Fire Department will be serving a fish fry dinner from 1 to 7 p.m. today (Nov. 20). The event will be at the Cape Ferrelo Fire Hall, 96349 Cape Ferrelo Road.

Meal tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children younger than 12. Dianna Blazo, fire department fundraiser and barbecue planner, said the 12th annual fish fry will feature barbecued bacon-wrapped albacore; locally-caught, deep-fried, beer-battered cod; Caesar salad; garlic

bread and homemade desserts. She said there will be adequate help to keep the lines moving. “There will probably be more than 50 different homemade desserts,” she said. “And there are probably at least 200 amazing prizes,” she added.

Prizes range from discount tickets to a brand new blackpowder rifle and several weekend getaways. Drawings for the smaller prizes begin at 2 p.m., but the major prize tickets will not be drawn until 7 p.m., Blazo said. Winners do not need to be present at the drawings.

Reflections

Let’s take a look at our feelings, generated by our intuition (knowing something without the use of reasoning) and emotion (a state of consciousness having to do with the arousal of strong feelings). Sometimes we stand back in awe of all the varying realities (feelings) we humans can create for ourselves. We have used our emotions to create harmony between each other, or annoyance, or disgust, fury or love. And none of it is real in our lives until we’ve used our emotion to create it — we’re amazing! But we also can throw ourselves into hugely volatile conflicts when we express our raw emotions — especially as harsh, judgmental emotions.

Strange But True •It was journalist, entrepreneur and philanthropist Esther Dyson who made the following sage observation: “The Internet is like alcohol

in some sense. It accentuates what you would do anyway. If you want to be a loner, you can be more alone. If you want to con-

nect, it makes it easier to connect.” •The average family throws out about $600 in unspoiled food every year.

Canine influenza vs. kennel cough PAW’S CORNER: Can you give me any information on Canine Influenza Virus? — Jordan C., Kansas City, Mo. DEAR JORDAN: This relatively new virus was identified about six years ago following an outbreak of a mystery illness among dogs at a race track in Jacksonville, Fla. It was determined that a horse virus had been transmitted to the dogs. Since then, Canine Influenza Virus has joined a list of communicable diseases to which dogs, especially those in crowded living conditions like a kennel or shelter, are vulnerable. CIV is sometimes mistaken for kennel cough, as one of its symptoms is coughing that can worsen after activity. However, unlike kennel cough, CIV is often accompanied by a runny nose, sneezing and runny eyes. In more severe cases of CIV, a high fever is present, along with loss of appetite, lethargy or depression, and sometimes difficulty breathing. Any of these symptoms should prompt a visit to the veterinarian to confirm CIV and make sure pneumonia doesn’t set in.

closely in case its health worsens. The illness usually runs its course in four weeks. Fortunately, a vaccine for the virus is available. Ask the vet about immunizing your pet, particularly if you plan to place it in a kennel or doggie daycare.

Paw’s Corner SAM MAZZOTTA

Because CIV is a virus, antibiotics aren’t an effective cure. Treatment includes making your dog more comfortable — including cough medicine or other medicines to reduce symptoms — and keeping its immune system strong through a good diet and vitamin supplements. Cruisers donate $5,000 to nonprofits Again this year, Curry County Cruisers distributed donations of more than $5,000 to nonprofit organizations that contribute to the quality of life in Curry County. The checks, given out Nov. 11, included $1,000 to the Community Helpers Food Bank; $500 each to: VFW Post 966; Brookings-Harbor Red Shirts; Harbor Fire Department; Winchuck Fire Department; Oasis Shelter and Home for Women; and $250 each to: Brookings Fire Department; Cape Ferrelo Fire Department; Brookings-Harbor Crime Stoppers; Outreach Gospel Mission; and South Coast Humane society. This is in addition to the $300 the club distributed earlier this year, Lee said. He said the car club’s Memorial Day Car Show regularly raises funds to support

local charities. “We are very happy that it has been successful enough to allow us to pass on this much money to the community,” he said. The business community support makes it all possible, he said. “The credit goes to all of the business establishments that gave us sponsorship money that enabled us to put on the car show. As with most things, it is a combined effort put forth by quite a few that make the end result very rewarding,” Lee said. The group is already making plans for next year’s car show, barbecue and raffle, and expects to make the popular show even bigger and better. For additional information about the Cruisers and their activities, call Lee at 707-4870611.

A question commonly asked by bereaved people at this time of year is, “How can I get through the holidays?” There is really no single answer of what to do or not do, except for this guiding principle: do what is comfortable. If you’re already experiencing the stress of losing a loved one, the additional strains of the holidays can create pressure to “get into the spirit of the season.” The

key to coping with grief during the holidays is to find the way that is right for you. For some it may be helpful to be with family and friends, emphasizing the familiar. Others may wish to avoid old sights and sounds, perhaps even taking a trip. Others will find new ways to acknowledge the season. What is important is to find ways to take care of yourself. The following guidelines may be helpful: Plan for the approaching holidays; be aware that this

might be a difficult time for you. The additional stress may affect you emotionally, cognitively and physically. This is a normal reaction, but it is important to be prepared for these feelings. Plan ahead as to where and how you will spend your time during the holidays. Let yourself scale back on activities if you want to. Redefine your holiday expectations. This can be a transition year to begin new traditions and let others go. Recognize that holidays won’t be the same. If you try to keep everything as it was, you may be disappointed. Doing things a bit differently can acknowledge the change while preserving continuity with the past. Decide what you really want to do, and what can be

avoided. Be careful not to isolate yourself. It’s alright to take time for yourself, but don’t cut yourself off from the support of family and friends. When you are especially missing your loved one, call family members or friends and share memories. Give yourself permission to express your feelings. If you feel an urge to cry, let the tears flow. Tears are healing. For more information about coping with the holidays, bereavement support services and community holiday events to honor loved ones, please contact the Curry County Home Health & Hospice Bereavement Coordinator at 541-469-0405; 541-247-7084 or 800-5359472.

Lions offer free health checks The Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation is the only private nonprofit in the state that offers free statewide health checks through their Mobile Health Screening Program (MHSP). This year-round program provides school and community screenings, serving more than 28,000 adults and children and identifying an excess of 8,700 potential health problems last year alone. Diabetes risk assessment is one of the six crucial health checks offered. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 1 in 4 diabetics have not been diagnosed. At every MHSP community event where glucose testing

is available, an average of 20 percent of people screened are discovered to have blood sugars high enough to indicate a potential diabetes risk. Undiscovered and untreated diabetes wreaks havoc in the body’s systems, and can affect both vision and hearing. The Oregon Lions want to prevent these complications by providing a free, vital health check to everyone in need, particularly the many that might otherwise go undetected because they lack insurance. Approximately 640,000 Oregonians lack health care coverage, including 118,000 children. Without insurance, most people do not have ac-

cess to preventative health care and that’s where the Oregon Lions come in. By providing health screenings, Lions offset some of the potential medical risks and related costs of diabetes and other life threatening conditions. Each screening event is scheduled through the foundation office, and the majority of events are sponsored or hosted by a Lions Club. Call (800) 635-4667 for a schedule of upcoming Mobile Health Screenings in your community, or if you’d like to support the Lions’ effort in creating a healthier Oregon, contact Doug Thompson, Resource Development Director, at 503-413-7527.
