According to Cape Ferrelo Fire Department fundraiser and fish fry planner, Dianna Blazo, the annual fundraising dinner Saturday, Nov. 20, was “spectacular.” With no false modesty, Blazo added, “We do a great job.” Diners’ comments, as they relinquished their seats at the table to the next round of hungry people, indicated that Blazo was not exaggerating about the quality of the menu of barbecued bacon-wrapped albacore and locally caught deep-fried, beer-battered cod, Caesar salad, garlic bread, and homemade desserts. Both Blazo and Cape Ferrelo Fire Chief Rich Miller said that the number of dinners served was down a bit because of the stormy weather. However, Blazo said, “We served 750 dinners
counting those going through twice, and we cleared approximately $6,000 for the fire department.” It’s obvious that the word about the Cape Ferrelo Fish Fry is out because Blazo said they had people from as far away as Medford who drove through the weather to eat the fish and trimmings. “We had six carloads that came together from Crescent City,” she said. In addition to the food, there were at least 200 prizes to award. Prizes included weekends at Best Western Beachfront Inn, Chetco River Resort, Hyatt Lodge Resort, Lucas Lodge and Whaleshead Beach Resort, as well as a new black powder rifle donated by JC Land Clearing. “It was hard work, but it was fun, fun, fun,” Blazo said. “We’re already planning for next year.”
Redshirts make Christmas merrier 288 packages mailed to troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan By Marjorie Woodfin Pilot staff writer Friday was a red-letter day for the Brookings-Harbor Redshirts, as more than two dozen volunteers delivered 228 packages to the Brookings Post Office. Although the Redshirts have been mailing packages to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan on the first and third Fridays of every month since June 2006, the December mailing is always special, because of Christmas, said Redshirts President Frank Muller. This December was an especially large mailing, requiring approximately $3,200 postage to be paid, Muller said. Those packages will help bring a bit of homeland Christmas cheer to many serving overseas, or recuperating in two medical units in Afghanistan, one a NATO hospital in
Kandahar, the other a MASH unit at Camp Dwyer. In this recent mailing, in addition to a number of gifts and goodies, some larger boxes were also filled with small Christmas trees and decorations. All packages include personal messages from senders to make the gifts more warm and special, Muller said. Muller said that the 228 packages just sent brings the number of packages sent by his group to 4,869. The boxes always include enough gifts and goodies to be shared by 10 individuals. Muller praised the community’s support of the program. He explained that it all started when a group of friends came up with the idea to send boxes of food, comfort items, snacks, sox, 49rs shirts “or anything that might make them smile.” See Redshirts, Page 8B

Last week I was asked to put an announcement in the Bulletin Board telling of a show of art by kindergartners. The display was part of Brookings-Harbor High School student Crystal Pitts senior project. Because I enjoy art, I decided Saturday to check out the show, which was in the new classroom at Wrights Custom Framing. At first I was expecting to see a lot of drawings typical of 5-yearolds. What I saw was impressive. By the time I left the venue, I learned that Courtney didnt just organize a show, but spent a lot of time working with the fledgling students. I went away feeling that she did a lot of work to bring out the artistic creativity in these students. Lately, Ive learned from my own experience that bringing out my own creativity takes a lot of work. A couple of months ago, art instructor Janeen Vick asked if I could announce her watercolor art class. In previous years she taught the class at the Masonic Lodge and made it available for children 7 to 14. After Wrights relocated to its new location, which included space for an art classroom, Vick found herself with plenty of room and opened the class for anyone. I decided to take the class. Most of the students were younger than 14, but there were a few adults who decided to join. All were either a parent or grandparent of a student, except for myself and Vicks helpers, James and Elisa. I was expecting to be one of the worst students in the class. Give me a camera, I can be creative. Give me a computer with Photoshop, I can somewhat express myself artistically. Give me a paintbrush and I can create a blob and call it abstract art. I learned a lot, even though the class was taught at a hurricane pace. Perhaps the most valuable lesson I learned isnt how to use a brush, mix the paint to create different colors and tricks to make a rock look like a rock, or a tree like a tree, but the fact that art takes practice. Another art teacher, Sara Broderick, once told me that anyone can draw. I questioned that at first. My thinking was, “how can I draw if I dont have the talent?” Now after taking all six sessions offered in Vicks class, Im more of a believer that anyone can draw. Being able to draw is not about talent, but rather its learning how to use the tools to make it possible. Talent is only the ability to catch on with less practice than someone like me. Something else I realized during the class. As a kid, I used to draw all the time. Perhaps as I grew up, I began to think people would think I was wasting my time drawing pictures. My abilities faded for lack of practice. Now that Ive been through the class, and seen the work displayed by kindergartners, Im thinking, perhaps I should approach art like a 5-year-old: Dont be afraid to create, and dont worry about what people think. ~~~ Bill Schlichting is features editor of the Curry Coastal Pilot. Succulents continue to be a learning experience Growing Your Garden JERRY HOLCOMB
culents.com was like spending an entire day in a fiveacre nursery planted solid with succulent plants. A few I recognized, but most were strangers, drop dead beautiful strangers. Of course, I wanted them all! The ensuing months have been filled with “succulent searches,” and the finds number well over a hundred; more than I have space to bring in for winter. Besides, the larger garden is tucked into washed pea gravel in such a manner that it would destroy the effect to move them. Most are planted in the wonderful “junque” I have also been on the road for. And, yes, some are even
set into the ground. So, I have come up with plan B. Most plants will survive here if covered, protected from the icy winds that whip up from the sea. Remay, the trade name for a floating row cover material will come to the rescue. Floating row cover is a non-woven fabric that allows air, water and sunshine to penetrate, but that can protect to a few degrees. It also protects from drying wind. One layer will protect to two or three degrees, but a double layer can have much more of an effect. This 6-foot-wide material is easy to work with and drapes easily. I’m making a double-thickness quilt which can be placed over the entire succulent garden and held in place with bricks, rocks and a few well-placed garden spikes. It’s safe to leave row cover on until the weather warms up. Other materials, such as sheets, blankets, bubble wrap, or paper can also protect ten-
der plants, but they must be removed each morning to keep from smothering the plants. My row cover blanket will be ready to set in place long before freezing occurs. Remay is easy to use. If needed, I can stitch or staple pieces together. But, since the rolls of Remay are 6-feet wide, there will be little need to stitch. The other bane of succulent plants is too much water. Plants must have perfect drainage. Setting pots on four inches of gravel, and making sure pots have plenty of drainage holes takes care of this. The garden is on a slight slope which will also be helpful. The lewisia require other measures. These native plants (all varieties) resent water on their leaves as well as wet soil. These, I will remove to a spot under a roof extension that remains dry at all times. Not too difficult since I have only about a dozen lewisia, and all are
potted. Succulents can have other problems. Some burn if their leaves are exposed to hot afternoon sun. Look them up online to determine which need special attention. Try to site these where they will have some afternoon shade. If you can’t look them up because you don’t know their names, you may have to depend on trial and error. But leave a small division of the plant outdoors and take the rest where it will have protection until you can determine its hardiness. Succulents of all sorts are available in most garden centers. In addition, a tiny plant taken from a friend’s planting will take off like a storm. Cuttings root easily in plain soil. Succulents of all sorts are available in most garden centers. Echeveria is a large genus of attractive rosette plants with more or less elongated petals, sometimes growing on stems, other times forming clumps close to the soil. Leaves have a waxy appearance and a single plant may reach ten to twelve inches across. Cape Blanco sedum, a native, forms small rosettes and spreads close to the ground. It makes a great spiller in a pot, as the graygreen leaves trail over the container’s rim. Try a patch with black mondo grass next to it for a striking effect. You can also combine different succulents in a pot or dish for a grand effect. ~~~ “Pacific Coastal Gardening” is Jerry Holcomb’s newest book. Its mission is to offer practical information to those who garden in coastal climates. It’s loaded with color photos. Holcomb is happy to answer gardening questions. I have written several columns about succulents in the garden. Recently, I reviewed them. When I wrote the first in 2002, I realize now, I was quite a novice. I probably listed all the succulents I grew at that time, fewer than a dozen. But those remain among my favorites. While I did not misinform, I now know my knowledge of these splendid plants was limited. Last February, I discussed just how fragile some succulents can be, after losing my prized aeonium “Swartzkoff,” which had grown to four feet high and wide. I also discussed two groups which are completely hardy here: lewisia and saxafragia. Both of these are large families and could fill a large garden. And, I have included many in my own garden. But by then, I’d become excited about the thousands of varieties of succulents available online and in garden centers. Just logging on to gosuc-

Moments in Time •Dec. 11, 1872: Dime-novel hero Buffalo Bill Cody makes his first stage appearance in a Chicago-based production of The Scouts of the Prairie. Cody remained on the Chicago stage for the next 11 years. Buffalo Bill Cody was the hero of more than 1,700 variant issues of dime novels. •Dec. 6, 1884: In Washington, D.C., workers place a 9inch aluminum pyramid atop an obelisk of white marble, completing the construction of the Washington Monument. A city law passed in 1910 re-
stricted the height of new buildings to ensure that at 555 feet, the monument would remain the tallest structure in Washington, D.C. •Dec. 12, 1914: The Dow Jones Industrial Average suffers its worst percentage drop (24.39 percent) since it was first published in 1896. It was the first day of trading since the New York Stock Exchange reopened in November 1914 after being shut down due to the start of World War I earlier that year. •Dec. 7, 1941: In an early-
morning sneak attack, Japanese warplanes bomb the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, and the United States enters World War II. Two hundred Japanese aircraft destroyed or damaged 18 U.S. ships and killed 2,400 Americans. •Dec. 8, 1980: John Lennon is shot and killed by Mark David Chapman outside his apartment building in New York City. Later that evening, police took Chapman into custody peaceably after finding him at the site of the shooting.
C-section not done to avoid labor pain DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am in the eighth month of my first pregnancy. I’ve a friend who keeps telling me to have a C-section. She says it’s quick and painless. I never considered this and wonder about its wisdom. What would you recommend? Does having a C-section mean all future deliveries have to be done the same way? — K.M. ANSWER: Cesarean sections can be lifesaving for the infant and for the mother. The reasons for having one don’t include speed of delivery simply for speed’s sake or for avoiding labor pain. You realize that a C-section involves surgical incisions, which, after the anesthesia wears off, are painful. And you realize that you have to recuperate from this operation as you would from any operation. Furthermore, all surgery involves potential dangers and complications. Serious bleeding is always possible. The uterus can become infected. Injuries to other pelvic organs can occur. Natural childbirth is painful, but the pain can be minimized in a number of effective ways. I believe you’ll be surprised at how tolerable childbirth is. As for future pregnancies, the standard teaching used to be that once a woman had a C-section, all her future deliveries had to be C-sections. That’s no longer true. Second deliveries after a C-section can be vaginal deliveries, depending on some important circumstances. One of those is where the incision for the
To Your Good Health PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D.
section was made. Have you discussed this with your doctor? Do so. I’ll be surprised if the doctor agrees to a C-section solely to avoid pain and speed delivery. TO READERS: Questions on cervical cancers and Pap smears are answered in detail in the booklet on those topics. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 1102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ~~~ DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Our 22-year-old granddaughter has developed an uncontrollable giggle. She giggles before, during and after everything she says. Each time we talk to her, the giggles and their frequency get worse. She is basically shy and appears to be nervous, and says she is not consciously aware of her giggling. She says her friends have remarked on this, too. Is this a tic disorder? Is there something a doctor can do to help her? Is there medication? — S.N. ANSWER: Underlying anxiety, stress, shyness and
social phobia set in motion reflex defenses for people who harbor these traits. It’s their way of coping with situations that generate discomfort. It’s not a tic, although it is somewhat similar. Both are involuntary. I would first talk to the young lady in a compassionate way and tell her that this behavior is misinterpreted by people and that she should make a conscious effort to suppress the giggling. Only if the giggling cannot be controlled and only if it’s causing her to suffer socially would I turn to medical people for help. Yes, there are treatments and medicines that can control anxiety and phobias, but a trial of self-treatment should come first. ~~~ Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475.

Redshirts volunteers unload packages at loading dock behind Brookings Post Office Friday.
Redshirts: Soldiers say they appreciate gifts Continued from Page 1B
The mailings began with names given to the group by Brookings residents and visitors, and has grown to include many different bases and hospitals. The Redshirts and volunteers who have sent individual packages have received personal letters thanking them. They have even been visited by recipients home on leave, who came to thank them personally
and tell them what a lift receiving a package gave them. Muller complemented the U.S. Postal Service employees who help the Red Shirts by opening the office early and getting the boxes for the troops in the mail as efficiently as possible. For information about the Redshirts, or to make a donation or volunteer to help with packages, contact Muller at 541-412-7545.

The family of U.S. Marine Brandon Hodge, of Brookings, holds a commemorative flag flown over Oregon that will be presented to the soldier who is serving in Afghanistan.
Marine to receive flag By Marjorie Woodfin Pilot staff writer While mailing packages Friday, the Brookings-Harbor Redshirts were also taking photos of the family of Brandon Hodges of Brookings, who is serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Afghanistan. The photos included a special flag. “We received some flags from the Department of the Air Force, 173rd Fighter Wing from Kingsley Field, (in Klamath Falls) through a mutual friend, David Marion from the Oregon Flag and Pole Co. in Shady Cove,” Redshirts President Frank Muller said. The flags they received were flown on the Fourth of July in an F-15C, making fly-bys across the state. Each flag was also flown aboard an HH-60 helicopter by the 129th Rescue Wing, a Pararescue
unit out of Moffet Field near San Jose, Calif. “Each of the flags we received was taken by individual members of the 1147th Fighter Squadron who flew the flags at their homes and at campgrounds across the great state of Oregon,” Muller said. Each flag is also accompanied by a packet which includes a Certificate of Flight showing that these flags were flown over Medford, Central Point, Salem, Roseburg, Lake of the Woods, Ashland, Gold Beach, Hillsboro, Eagle Point, Klamath Falls and Redmond. Each certificate includes the tail number of the airplane, date, and name of the pilot who flew that particular flag. “The Red Shirts have added their own history to the flag we are sending to Brookings resident Brandon Hodges, who
is serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Afghanistan,” Muller said. Photos of Redshirts members holding the flag during the Christmas mailing were also included. “We were fortunate to be accompanied by Hodges’ father, Doug Hodges, brother, Scott Hodges, and grandparents, Don and Becky Hodges.” Muller explained that, in addition to the flag being sent to Brandon Hodges, the Redshirts are sending nine additional flags that have been flown and numbered to other individuals serving in Afghanistan. A new flag will be sent with each numbered flag. Each service member who receives the flags will be requested to keep the numbered flag, and to return the new flag after it has been flown in Afghanistan in honor their comrades in arms.
