SLOW CHILDREN

Making a name for themselves

Brookings natives host ‘full-blown rock show’ tonight By Scott Graves Pilot staff writer The rain pounded the roof of the small, backyard workshop in Brookings, drowning out singer and bass player Caleb Moffit as he talked about the rock band Slow Children. However, the rain didn’t stand a chance once Caleb and guitarist Bryan Bacci plugged their instruments into the amps, and Kevin Hutman started hammering the drums. The melodic mix of acoustic, hard rock and alternative music that thundered inside the shop was tight, intense and impressive — the product of three men who have been playing music together since the eighth grade — nearly 15 years. The trio has spent the last eight years following their rock dreams, with a certain level of success, on the Las Vegas club scene, where they earned accolades from local radio stations and the press. In August, the band left Sin City, returning to Brookings to write new music and rehearse for a five-state regional tour scheduled the first of the year. The band members see the tour as a an opportunity to use their improved music skills and

We’ve learned a lot playing in Vegas. We know more. We’re better now.” The band’s sound, with its blend of many genres, makes it difficult to define. The band members list their musical influences as Sublime, Silver Chair, Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Floater and the Beatles. Their music has been described by others as a blend of ’90s alternative rock and ’70s progressive rock, with a touch of reggae and jazz. The band will introduce their new songs and play those from their catalog today (Nov. 27) during what they dubbed an all ages “full-blown rock show” at the Redwood Theater, 621 Chetco Ave. in Brook-

ings. Doors open at 8 a.m. (following the movie) and the show starts at 9 p.m. and it will end around midnight. Tickets are $15. Youthful endeavors

The three members of Slow Children, all hovering around the 28-year-old mark, are more like a family than a band of three guys. That’s because they met one another in eighth grade at Brookings’ Azalea Middle School and have stuck together ever since. “We just picked up instruments and just started playing,” Caleb recalled. “We didn’t really know how to play them.” That didn’t stop the three boys from raising a ruckus in one another’s homes, trying to put what they heard on their parents’ jazz and classic rock albums into their mix of rock and roll. Caleb’s dad, Jerry Moffit, a jazz musician and retired music teacher, taught the boys in and out of the classroom, focusing on the fundamentals as well as music production and theory. He would later play keyboards on the band’s debut CD. “Their music has gotten quite a bit more complex in the last few years,” Moffit said. See Band, Page 2A

Band: ‘We really want to see the music scene in Brookings grow’ He recalled the time when Caleb and Kevin were in the eighth grade and the two would come to Caleb’s house and attempt to play music. “Kevin would bang on the drums and Caleb would ... scream,” Moffit said. “One day I said to Caleb, ‘if you’re going to do this, you should probably play something.’ He said ‘Like what?’ So I borrowed a bass (guitar) from the school and gave it to him, along with some lesson books and CDs. He learned very quickly. He’s self-taught.” Caleb took his father’s advice to heart, learning to play bass, and doing more

with his voice than just scream. With Caleb singing and playing bass, and Kevin learning the drum kit, congas and percussion, the nucleus of what would later become Slow Children took form with the addition of schoolmate and electric guitarist Bryan. The group spent their high school years entertaining themselves, friends and family with their growing skills. In their senior year, the trio formed an official band, calling it Slow Children, and started playing parties, community events and local bars, building a small, yet loyal local fan base. A few months before

graduation, the trio literally ran away to chase their rock dreams. Two of the band members sold their cars, bought a van and traveled around California, staying with various family and friends, and playing any gigs that came their way. “We pretty much lived out of our van for those first few months,” Caleb said in an 2007 Pilot interview. In 2002, the group stopped to play in Las Vegas and decided to stay, in an effort to get consistent work, and perhaps get a chance at a record deal. “Vegas is centrally located. It’s only a few hours to cities such as Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and San Francisco,” Kevin said.

The band’s experience on The Strip was a mixed bag. Their sound caught on quickly, earning kudos from local radio stations and big name clubs such as the House of Blues and Hard Rock Cafe. Yet, it wasn’t enough to pay the bills. All three men worked second jobs, including waiting tables and working in a music studio. Still, according to Kevin, the years in Las Vegas offered valuable lessons — on and off the stage. “We played music several nights a week in the clubs, and that’s how you really get good,” Kevin said. “We also learned a lot about the music business, and how we might fit into it.” For awhile, Slow Children became a foursome when they were joined by another Brookings alumni, Theron Fox, whom they met in Vegas. In the ensuing years, the band made brief tours to surrounding states, performing on their own or opening for popular indie group acts such as Oregon’s Floater. They garnered radio play in the Vegas area, and performed for audiences numbering in the thousands. In 2007, Slow Children returned to Brookings to see family and play at

Nearly 200 people, many of whom went to school with the band members, packed the Hideaway Bar and Grill in Harbor. In 2009, Slow Children entered the studio and produced their debut CD, Life in Reverie, that featured a number of fan favorites. The songs on the CD were written by Caleb and arranged by all three band members. Caleb’s voice has matured into a smooth, powerful, sound that transitions easily from the band’s grungesounding rockers to upbeat acoustic songs. Kevin’s drumming is complex and creative with the clever use of electronic samples. Bryan is shredding better than ever on the guitar, incorporating complex loops to faithfully recreate the band’s studio sound.

wanted, when they wanted us to. That’s not us.” The band also attracted interest from music industry companies and investors, but any deals that were offered included giving away more than 50 percent of the rights to their original music, and future profits. Again, not a path the band wanted to take. “We’re trying to get investors, the money we need, but without giving up the rights to our songs,” Caleb said. The band may have found a way to do that with the help of World Music Pros, a company that works as a liaison between promising unsigned bands and independent record and publishing companies. The company, Caleb said, is working to get the band’s music to the college crowd. With that in mind, Slow Children will rerelease an updated version of their debut CD, while writing new songs for their sophomore effort, to be released following next year’s planned five-state regional tour. “Our goal right now is to get on college radio and get on the college circuit,” Caleb said. “That’s where we can really get some good exposure.” Caleb’s father has mixed feelings about the band’s future. “They are as good as any-

Leaving Las Vegas

Despite years of paying dues with moderate success, Slow Children, back to being a trio with the departure of Theron Fox, are excited about the band’s future. “We’re on the brink of breaking through,” Caleb said. In Vegas, several big hotels had offered the band full-time work performing as a cover band. “We didn’t really want to go down that path,” Caleb said. “We’d have to sign a contract and play what they

thing I’ve heard out there, but the music industry is so tough,” Moffit said. “I hope they don’t get discouraged.” Rock Show

Tonight, the band will perform what it calls a twohour “full-blown rock show,” complete with a light show, video screen and more. They’ve asked local musicians Evan Dunn and Luke Mathison to open for them. Why the big production in Brookings? “I didn’t see my first rock show until I left Brookings,” Kevin explained. “I want to bring some of that experience to my hometown, and now we’re in a position to do it. We really want to see the music scene in Brookings grow.” Slow Children will focus on its original songs, with a few covers, including those by Sublime, Floater, the Turtles and an amped up version of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.” “We play a lot of 21-yearsand-older shows, and we wanted to play a show for all ages,” Kevin said. “This is going to be a fun, enjoyable concert.” After tonight’s show, the band will do a small tour of Northern California, return to Brookings near Christmas for an acoustic show, and then prepare for their five-state tour — and the next chapter in the story called Slow Children.

Now, she regularly tours Europe and North America with Fraser and creates a buzz at festivals and in concert halls. She is considered to be in the vanguard of young cellists who are redefining the role of the cello in traditional music. “Fraser, one of the most respected of all exponents of the Scots fiddle, would look long and hard to find a more appropriate cellist as a (musical) partner. Haas can switch just as effortlessly as Fraser from a gentle singing tone to a driving, dancing melody. A positive joy,” wrote The Scotsman. For information visit www.mikegreenassociates. com. CRESCENT CITY — The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA) presents its third performance of the season — Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas — at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, in Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G St. Fraser, long regarded as Scotland’s premier fiddle ambassador, was winning national fiddle competitions on the other side of the Atlantic before Natalie Haas was born. California-raised cellist Haas is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music. Their pairing is the fulfillment of a musical dream for Fraser, who has long wished to return the cello to its historical role as the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music. “Going back to the 1700s, fiddle and cello made up the dance band of choice in Scotland,” Fraser said, “with the cellist bowing bass lines and driving the rhythm.” Pianos and accordions eventually elbowed out the cello, relegating it to an orchestral setting, he said. “I’ve been pushing to get the cello back into the traditional music scene for years, always on the lookout for a cellist with whom I could have a strong musical con-

Angels enjoy a party over a single convert “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive,’ ” Acts 20:35. The scene from this verse is Paul talking with some leaders from Ephesus. He wants to encourage them and warn them what ministry is all about. Ultimately he puts them in God's hands and trusts the Lord is going to work it all out. Paul did not go into ministry for the money or the fame or any other thing. He just loved Jesus and desired everyone to know that love. And in the middle of his vignette to these men, he quotes Jesus and tells

Faith Forum MIKE WHITMAN

us to remember the words of Jesus: “It is more blessed to give than receive.” This verse literally means you will be extremely happy if you are a giver not just a receiver. Haven’t you found that to be true? Recently as I was preparing some food for our Thanksgiving feast that we do every year at the VFW Hall, I found myself extremely blessed. I got to see an older gal give her heart to Jesus.

She understood what he did for her and I was able to tell her the story found in the beginning of Luke 15, “Then Jesus told them this parable: ‘Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the 99 in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.” ’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous persons who do not need to repent.”

I told her the angels are partying in heaven for her decision to follow our Lord. We all like to party. Before I knew the Lord, that was the main plan on weekends — get hammered. But the party that Jesus is talking about here is so much better. He says the rejoicing in Heaven over one sinner who repents is indeed “party time.” I got to rejoice because I saw one of God’s sheep come to know her shepherd. The Bible teaches full assurance of salvation. You can know without a doubt that your sins are forgiven and that Jesus desires to lead you the rest of your life. Have you ever heard of a radical party going on and

you were not invited? Remember how bummed you felt. Jesus invites you to his party. It’s called The Supper Feast of the Lamb. All the righteous people and cool people and dare i say, strange — or, as the Bible says, peculiar — people are going to be there. What’s keeping you? Oh yes, he tells us we need to repent. The parties that go on in heaven deal with individual sinners turning to the savior. In fact, this is what Paul is telling the Ephesian elders : R e p e nt anc e t o war d Go d and faith in Jesus. If you’re reading this column, God wants you to know he loves you and has a great plan for your life. He wants to transform your

life. What do you need to do? Repent and thank him for what he has done for you. He died for your sins. He defeated death because he never sinned. He demonstrated his love for you while you were out sinning. It’s then that he died, according to Romans 5:8. Join the party, repent and turn to Jesus, and you too will hear those words resonate in your heart: “It is more blessed to give than receive.” Thank you Lord for giving us Jesus. ~~~ Mike Whitman is pastor of Brookings Christian Fellowship, 18881 Cornett Road, Cape Ferrelo. Chetco Activity Center keeps seniors active

The board’s corner

We have a strong and dedicated board of directors, but we are looking to add to their numbers. Since the last article, we heard from three community members who may be willing to join. As an organization, we need people who are passionate about helping seniors. The Chetco Activity Center has been active since it started in the mid-1970s. The cur-

In early November, Candice Michel and her cameraman from KBSC cable channel 9, came to film a 30minute piece on the Activity Center. The show is on three times a day for two weeks. Some of what we filmed included many of the weekly activities, various classes and

Despite some people’s fears — the computer is here to stay. It’s a great tool for finding information on any subject, or for typing a letter. Thanksgiving Day

We sold over 117 tickets for our Thanksgiving Day Dinner, and although I’m writing this before it happens, I’m going to call it a success. The holidays are a good time to gather family, friends and community together and share a meal. Thanks to all who participated. We are thankful for each one of you. Kitchen survey

In September and October, we put out a survey to see what our members liked and

didn’t like. Our kitchen staff looked over the results and are tweaking the menus each month to reflect the feedback. Although steak and lobster won’t be one of the offerings anytime soon, we serve great tasting and nutritious meals that aren’t too heavy on the sodium. In October, the health department inspected the kitchen and dining area, and gave us a 100-percent approval rating. Congrats to the kitchen staff. In closing

If you have not had the opportunity to visit us the past, we hope you’ll come soon. Remember, Chetco Activity Center is open to all senior and community members. The address is 550 Chetco Lane,

Brookings. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. Lunch hours are from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost for those 60 and older is a suggested donation of $4.50. Those younger than 60 pay $6.50. The December menu and activity calendar are available now — just stop by and pick one up. ~~~ Dawn Baines is the office and operations manager of Chetco Activity Center, 550 Chetco Lane, Brookings. She can be reached at 541-4696822. For information, visit http://brookings.chamberbusinessgateway.com/chetcoactivity-center.

As I write this article, the snow is falling and I think I am the only one in town that is happy about it. I will take 80-degree days — or snow — any day of the week. You may keep the rain — although I do like thunder and lightning storms like we had this past weekend.

Southwestern Oregon Community College will offer courses in adult basic education and GED preparation during the winter term in Curry County. Classes will meet in Brookings on Tuesdays and Thursdays and in Gold Beach on Mondays and Wednesdays. A two-session orientation is required for all new students who take the classes.

The orientation sessions in Gold Beach are scheduled Jan. 3 and 5 at the Gold Beach Center at the Event Center on the Beach, 29392 Ellensburg Ave. The Brookings orientation sessions will be on Jan. 4 and 6 at the Brookings Center, 420 Alder St. Orientations at both locations are scheduled from 6 to 8:30 p.m. There is a $25 charge. To

register, call 541-247-2741 in Gold Beach or 541-469-5017 in Brookings. Register early as classes fill quickly, college officials said. Courses are also offered in Port Orford on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Port Orford Library. Orientation for the Port Orford course will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Jan. 6. Call the Gold Beach office to register.

Think twice before adopting pet DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Thank you for printing Dori’s view on pet adoption in your column. I have been in the animal rescue business for many years and have 10 “unadoptables.” Dori is so right, and I applaud her for her ability to state her position so clearly. I hope many of your readers got it. I have the results of poor choices — lucky for me because they are so dear, but they had to go through so much, which is very sad. — Pam Y., Lewiston, Calif. DEAR PAM: Thank you for the update and for taking in the “unadoptables” — pets that, in many cases, have behavioral or health issues that their former owners couldn’t deal with. People who are interested in purchasing or adopting a pet must do their homework before making the leap, especially if they have no prior experience. It’s not enough just to read up on the breed of dog or cat you’re interested in, their traits and behavior. You have to take into account the impact on your lifestyle and your bank account. Lighthouse society honors Coast Guard 10 facts about hospice One of the highlights of “A Virtual Tour of St. George Reef Lighthouse recently held at Brookings Community Center was a flag ceremony presented by a color guard from the Chetco Coast Guard Station. Following the flag salute, a certificate of appreciation was presented to the guardsmen by the sponsors of the event, the St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society, as a token of the close relationship that existed between the Oregon Coast Guard Group and St. George Reef lighthouse when the offshore beacon was in operation prior to 1975. Although technically separated by a state line and operating in a different Coast Guard District, the life boat from Brookings Harbor stood by when lighthouse crewmen were transferred to the station from the deck of a Coast Guard Group Humboldt Bay cutter while dangling from the end of a 90-foot boom that stuck out from the east side of the structure. Exceptional safety precautions negated jurisdictional considerations because three Coast Guard keepers were killed

More than 130 dying individuals were served by Curry County Hospice last year, yet, there are some important facts about hospice that most people don’t know. This may be keeping someone you know from getting the best care possible, when they need it most. Facts about hospice include: •Our Hospice is not a place; it’s high-quality medical professionals going to the patient, their family, friends, and caregivers helping them to focus on comfort and quality of life. •Hospice services are paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, most insurance plans, and donations. Fear of costs should never prevent a person from accessing hospice care since in Curry County, hospice is provided without regard to ability to pay. •We will serve anyone with a life-limiting illness, regardless of age or type of illness. •We will serve people of all backgrounds and traditions. Our core values cross all cultures by allowing the patient to be with family, offering spiritual and emotional support, symptom control and pain management. •Research has shown that the majority of Americans would prefer to be at home at the end of life’s journey — we try to make this possible for most people. •We serve people living in

Guy Towers, president of the St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society, presents a certificate of appreciation to U.S. Coast Guard Seaman Nicholas Richards while others from Station Chetco River look on. in 1951 when their boat swamped while being lowered by the boom. Many more were injured in the same manner.

The color guard was composed of Petty Officers Wade Heath, Kenly Stewart and Christian Stevenson and Seaman Nicholas

Richards. The certificate of appreciation was a joint project with Brookings historian Mike Adams.

But the board is making progress, he said. It will meet in mid-December to consider proposals by the Umatilla tribes to replace 44 “squaw” names in nine Eastern Oregon counties with tribal names, he said. “It takes a while to make progress with something like this, but it is happening,” he said.

This is the socially contentious part of what our board does.” While he understands that using a name for generations makes some people resistant to change, longevity doesn’t make the name any less offensive to others, he said. “If we called a place ‘Honky Flat’ because there were a lot of white people there, how would that go down?” he asked. A few years ago, a group of local residents, including archaeologist Jeff LaLande, American Indian storyteller Tom Doty and historian Kay Atwood, did a lot of research and came up with potential re-

Board of Geographic Names. The latter board makes the final decision. “It’s a demeaning name; we ought to get rid of it,” said Allan, 68, a cartographer who is a partner in Raven Maps & Images, as well as Benchmark Road Atlases, both based in Medford. “Oregon has more squaw names than any other state, by far.” Statewide there were about 140 squaw names, including about a dozen in Jackson and Josephine counties, he said. The board so far has replaced about 30. “We were asked to find replacement names as quickly as possible,” he said. “But the

Allan is a 14-year member of the board, which was directed in 2001 by the Oregon Legislature to rid the state of “squaw” geographic names because the term has become derogatory. The volunteer board has nearly two dozen members, including cartographers, geographers, historians and retired journalists. They consider applications for new names, as well as changed names, of Oregon’s geographic sites, then make recommendations, which are presented to the National

The tribes both objected to the name, he said. “We expect to get submissions shortly from the tribes,” he added. “We want to do it on a case-by-case basis. “What we don’t want is a quick, wholesale name change,” he added. “The state of Maine solved the problem by replacing all its squaw features with the name ‘moose.’ ” But replacing the word

MEDFORD (AP) — There likely will be no Indian Maiden Lakes or Indian Maiden Peak in Jackson County. During its recent fall meeting, the Oregon Geographic Names Board declined to replace “squaw” in local geographic names, such as Squaw Lakes, with “Indian Maiden.” The reason, explained member Stuart Allan of Medford, is that the name change submitted by a local resident sounded nice but lacked the gravitas the board sought. ‘Indian Maiden’ is kind of an idealized name, he said. “Nobody on the board approved it. What we would really like are Native American names that make sense for
