ast season, first year Gold Beach head football coach Justin Storns made a big splash in the deep end of the Sunset Conference pool.

The Panthers offensive line, which has long been the backbone of successful Gold Beach teams in the past, practices on the blocking sled.
Storns did so by taking over the reins of one of the state’s most prolific football dynasties from longtime Panther boss, Kevin Swift. He then engineered an undefeated regular season en route to a Sunset Conference title. Along the way the Panthers would outscore their opponents 327-91. In addition to the Panthers being crowned Sunset Champions, with several players headlining all-league and all-state rosters, Storns was also voted Sunset Coach of the Year by the league’s officials. By all measures a great year, but Storns’ now focuses on his current crop of Panther players. “We’re young and inexperienced, especially on the line,” Storns said, not mincing words. The Panthers graduated 11 se-
niors off the team and have only one returning senior suiting up for 2015, meaning Storns’ kids are going to have to grow up in a hurry if GBHS has any hopes of defending their league title. Storns is doing his best to play the hand he has been dealt, but admits this season could be a challenge. “I have about a half-dozen kids that have never seen any varsity time and my starting quarterback, Skyler (Floyd) suffered a broken collarbone on the last day of football camp and will be out of action for awhile. We’re hoping he might be back after the first few games of the season.” In the meantime, two backup QBs, Taylor Mathieson and Giovanni Rangel, will be competing for the top slot.

Some pundits have said the Panthers are smaller this year but Storns brushes that off. “We’re about the same size, maybe a bit smaller, but not much, and our overall team speed is just about where it was last year, he said. Offensively, Gold Beach has weapons. Brothers Tyson and Rocky Lilly will platoon at fullback along with newcomer Devon Moore. Morgan Ryan and Trevor Walker will fill the tailback slot with Shawn Wallace, Cole Morris, Wes Turner and Zak Denney as receivers. Defensively, Storns says the same inexperience that plagues his offensive line will be felt on the other side of the ball as well, but adds that “we did a pretty good job

New coach, new attitude: Bruins expect to compete By Ryan Sparks Pilot staff writer
From the moment he was named head coach last spring, Drew Carter has beena man on a mission to turn a fledgling program into a contender. Carter is doing so by using a formula of hard work, holding all players accountable and utilizing an intensified training program. The new Bruins head coach has increased the amount of off-season camps compared to years past and is stressing leadership from his seniors while holding all his players to a higher standard. “The new leadership is helping out a lot, said senior running back Jordan King. “We’re just so much more of a collective. This year we have a mindset and a goal. It’s night and day compared to the past.
The goal, of course, is to win a league title, but furthermore, to turn a program that has gone through a multitude of coaching changes over the past several years and has won just one game in two seasons, into a contender. Carter has done that by requiring more of his seniors. “Carter expects a lot from us, said King. “He expects us to be the leaders, and to do everything right and keep everything under control. Carter has raised the expectation level for the underclassmen as well. “When you come out here and mess up, you get talked to about it, said King. “You get it fixed and that makes us better as a team. “We have more discipline this year (under Carter), said junior Buell
Gonzales III. “He expects it throughout the program, which is making us better as a team. We’re not cutting corners, we’re doing things the hard way and it’s making us better in the end. While the attitude has changed, most of the players have not. While the loss of stars Christian Hooper, Alec Darger and David Hull will hurt, the Bruins return several starters to the roster. Russ Nickels returns for his second season as the Bruins quarterback, with King highlighting a speedy backfield. Second-team all-league defensive back Shaan Amin highlights a defense that also features all-leaguers Isaiah Ross at linebacker and Aaron Iwema and Nick Boynton on the
defensive line. The talent is there for the Bruins to be competitive, but ultimately, high school football success is built upon a program instituted by a head coach, and that is precisely what Carter is instilling in his players. “What people don’t see about Coach Carter is we’ve had three kids’ camps this summer, said King. “He’s going way down on the food chain to try to build a better program. For this year’s team, the goal isn’t just to win a league title, it’s about building something for generations to come. “We want to be the change, proclaimed King. “This year, we are really striving to be the change and make this place a football town again.

It’s been a rough few years for the Brookings-Harbor High School volleyball team. Having won just one match over the past two seasons can have a negative effect on players, coaches and the entire program. This season, the Lady Bruins look to make a fresh start. New head coach Emilie Aliamus moves up from the assistant coach’s role she had last season under Samantha Greenlee and takes over for
a team filled with young players. “It’s a very young team and a very inexperienced team, said Aliamus. “But the juniors and sophomores we have returning are going to be huge assets for us, as players and role models, because they have that experience (from last season). The Lady Bruins are missing a key piece of their team, as Mishonne Marks, an all-Far West League player and arguably the team’s best athlete last season, moved out of state.

Though they may be without the service of Marks, they do have allleague setter Ashley Shew returning for her junior season as well as a huge crop of incoming freshman. Mayce McCollum, a freshman who transferred from Santa Monica where she played in a competitive club volleyball league, will be a player to watch according to Aliamus. “You can tell (playing club volleyball) has really given her the experience she needs to play at the varsity level, said Aliamus. “She’s going to be a powerhouse hitter for us on the right side and is a huge asset as a setter. The addition of McCollum allows Aliamus more freedom with the BHHS offense than is previous years. “We are thinking of running a 6-2 set to where our setters are also hitters, said Aliamus, offering that the variety is a benefit the Lady Bruins didn’t have last season. ““One of the things we struggled with last year was that we only had one solid setter (Shew) on the varsity level. So we had to run a 5-1 set. We have more
options this year. The feeling at fall practice has been different as well. “We are coming in with a whole new vibe, said Shew, who was named co-captain along with Jocelyn Kay. “With the new coaches it’s really helped turn around all the negative feelings. We have a lot of work to do but have a group of girls that are really willing to learn and get where they need to be for us to win. According to Aliamus fans might not have to wait long for wins, as several of the Lady Bruins’ nonleague games are winnable. “I think there are a number of games we can win this year, she said. “If we start off the season gung-ho and at full-speed, then we can definitely win some of our games. Aliamus isn’t concerned with the number of games won in the past. “The past is the past, she proclaimed. “You can’t spend too much time looking at the past. You can only learn from the mistakes that you made. It’s about turning the page and starting brand new.

Newdall returns to coach program and build success By Randy Robbins Pilot staff writer
Dana Newdall has been here before, although it’s been a while. The newly ‘recycled’ head coach for the Gold Beach Lady Panther volleyball team led the squad for nine years (1992-2001). After stepping down in 2001, she returned to teaching and raising her family. Cue the ‘Welcome Back Kotter’ music. Now, 14 years later, Newdall has been tapped once again to head up the GBHS volleyball program after last season’s coach, Stephanie Sharbano, relocated to Montana. “They didn’t have anybody, so I guess it’s going to be me,” Newdall said with a laugh. Newdall explains her reinstate-

ment as being similar to riding a bicycle: You never forget how. The Panthers struggled last season going 3-7 in Sunset Conference and 6-15 overall, but that was a marked improvement from the previous season, where winless Gold Beach bested new league rivals Toledo and Waldport, but suffered at the hands of traditional Sunset powerhouses. At this time of year Newdall is still busy putting her team together but has already seen enough to know that her girls “have good fundamentals” in place. “They understand the game and we
possess some heavy hitters,” she said. That baseline could serve these Lady Panthers well as they continue to gel as a team. Newdall is optimistic that with some hard work this team can have a winning season. For 2015 season, Gold Beach returns four varsity letter women. Junior Savannah Carter will be an outside hitter as will sophomore Paris Newdall, seniors Sadie Allen, who will fill the center spot, and April Mickelson at offside hitter. Gold Beach fans will also be pleased to see Heidi Hancock back on the court. The talented senior re-
turns after recovering from injuries suffered in a vehicle accident last spring. Newdall likes what she sees offensively. “We should be able to score a bunch with the hitters we have,” she said. According to Newdall, it’s the defense that the Lady Panthers need to shore up. “We will be working on both speed and anticipation down on the court,” she explained. As for how the Sunset Conference will shake out this year Newdall is picking Myrtle Point to be the team to beat again this year. “They are very good and very tall.” She also points to Bandon as “always scrappy.”
Wishes all of our Panther Students a Great Season!

ased on just his attitude alone, you couldn’t tell if Brookings-Harbor High School cross-country coach Terry Axel was entering his first season or his 20th.
The longtime coach’s ageless enthusiasm for the sport of running creates such a positive environment around his athletes that it makes it difficult not to want to put on some running shoes yourself and see if he can help you lower your times. That infectious enthusiasm is one of the reasons why prep athletes keep coming back, year after year, to run on Terry Axel’s teams. This season is no exception. Though Axel lost some great runners due to graduation, namely Shaine Graham, Cody Enos and Tristan Husted, the 2015 Bruins cross-country team is loaded with improved runners and state hopefuls. “I’m excited about the crew I’ve got and there are just two seniors out of there,” said Axel during the first

We took the core nucleus of the boys team to running camp in California and they did well.” The Bruins boys team features senior Chris Burton, one of the best distance runners on both the BHHS cross-country and track and field teams, and the much improved Jimmie Allen, Jaden Green and Burton’s younger brother, Ezra. The team also features newcomers Spencer Abblit and Andrew Enos. While the girls team only features two athletes at the time of this writing (Debra Lawrence and Mia Adams) Axel is hopeful he will have more females competing on the team by the time the Bruins have their first meet on Sept. 9 at the Tugman Invitational at North Bend High School.

Burton, who is a clear favorite to return to the state title meet for the second consecutive season, is taking on more of a leadership role in his senior season. “I’ve learned quite a few things over the summer and hopefully I can use them to develop the team and get them to state this year, he said. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that I need to step into that leadership role. Axel praised several of his competitors during a fall practice session, commenting on how he is excited about the quality of runner he has on his roster. “I’ve got (Chris) Burton and Hunter Niedans back this year. I didn’t think I’d get Hunter back, but I saw he signed up for summer camp and I thought, ‘Wow, he’s been running,’ Axel said. “Jimmie (Allen) was right in Chris’ face during track and I think Ezra Burton is also stepping up. Jacob Green had a real good summer of training. With the majority of the runners being underclassmen, Axel believes the core of the program will be strong for years to come. And with former BHHS great Ally Manley coaching a promising group of 8th graders, dubbed “Manley’s Minions, at Azalea Middle School, the program should remain competitive for several years after the current crop has graduated. So after all these years, it looks as

Si tceles Fry, center, leads the Gold Beach High School cross-country team as they train at GBHS on Monday, Aug. 24. Gold Beach has enough athletes this season to field both a boys and girls team.
Third-year Gold Beach High School cross-country head coach, Tim Hawkins, has a slight smile curling from under his handlebar mustache these days. That’s because this year he can finally field a full boys and girls cross-country squad. “It will be the first time since I’ve been here and most likely a while for my predecessor Louis (Lopez) that
we have the kinds of numbers we have coming out this year,” he said. The Panthers feature eight veteran returners and a whole slew of incoming freshmen. The Panthers girls team has some strong long-distance runners in that mix too. Last season, Avi Gaston finished in 9th place at the state finals as a freshman. Gaston has plenty of competition within the league to push her.

Up the block in Bandon, the reigning state champion, Sailor Hutton, looks to be tough once again. “She (Hutton) is an incredible

The two athletes are good friends and have trained together in the past for the Junior Olympics. Hawkins is also looking for good things from Kaitlin Armstrong, who missed most of the season last year with an injury, but returned and looked impressive during track and field season. “Kaitlin will be tough, Hawkins proclaimed. “Watch and see. Another Panther ladies hopeful is wrestling state champion, sophomore, Jade Piper. Her coach points to Piper’s discipline and eagerness to win. “Jade is a competitor, and with her intensity will leave it all down on the field, he said. Hawkins is happy to have sophomore Bethy Meyers back to round out a formidable squad.
On the boys side of things Hawkins will call on a seniorheavy squad, featuring Jacob Carpenter, Joe Springer, Michael Morgan, and Si tceles Fry. Add into that mix a fast freshman, Kaiden

No seniors, no worries: Bruins believe they can compete â– â– Bruins lose several key players to graduation, but look to build around Far West League Co-MVP and a bevy of young talent By Ryan Sparks Pilot staff writer

Bruins head coach Gabe Anaya, right, works with goalkeeper David Freeman during fall practice. Goalkeeping is one of several vacated positions the Bruins have to fill due to graduating seniors.
Hypothetical situation: You are a soccer coach. You lose your top two goal scorers, your defensive midfielder, your best fullback and your starting goalkeeper. It’s a tough hand to be dealt, but that’s the scenario that Bruins boys soccer coach Gabe Anaya finds himself in. How do you lose so much from a team and still remain competitive in the Far West League? Lucky for him, Anaya’s son, Far West League co-MVP and first-team all-state midfielder Alex Anaya returns for his junior season, which should help soften the sting of losing such a talented crop of seniors. “Our goal is always to win league, said the head coach. “But yeah, it’s kind of a retooling season because we have a lot of young players coming up. The Bruins will feature a team
with no seniors, as the player expected to be the one senior on this year’s team, Riley Frazier, moved from the area. Anaya explained that though they are young, most of the players have come through the Brookings-Harbor youth soccer league, which he states helps the BHHS soccer programs. “Most of these kids out here played in the youth league, he said. “It’s good because it really helps feed our program. The 2015 Bruins will be a team led by juniors Anaya, Sean Colbert and Fernando Lira, to name a few. “Most of our juniors played varsity last year, said Anaya. “That was about half our team. Though they have no seniors, the Bruins will likely once again compete against North Bend for a league title, due to the rest of the Far West League competition being sub-par when compared to most other 4A leagues.

Junior midfielder Alex Anaya returns after winning Far West League Co-MVP and first team allstate honors in his sophomore season. He led the FWL in assists and will be called upon to create scoring opportunities for a Bruins team that lost its top two scorers.
“Maybe for our league, (having no seniors) is not a problem,” Anaya admitted. “But with a playoff game, you face teams with a little more experience. Sometimes you play a team with all seniors.” The Bruins success over the past several seasons has bred a confidence in the players that they can win, regardless of who is on the field. “We have such a good program that we always expect to have such a good season,” said co-league MVP Alex Anaya, who spent the offseason playing

â– â– With their top two scorers and the core of their leagueleading defense returning, Lady Bruins look forward to another memorable season By Ryan Sparks Pilot staff writer
Last season, the Brookings-Harbor High School Lady Bruins soccer team capped their season with a memorable 1-0 victory over league rival North Bend, giving BHHS their first league title under head coach Fernando Villa. As stellar a season as 2014 was, the Lady Bruins 2015 campaign looks to be even brighter. The Lady Bruins return much of last season’s team, including three starting defenders, their starting goalkeeper and top two goal-scorers — making the Lady Bruins the team to beat in the Far West League. “You are champions, Villa told his team during the first official practice of the fall sports season. “You now have a target on your back. Everybody is going to be coming for you.
Home games in red
It’s a fashion statement the Lady Bruins are more than willing to wear. “This year, they’re taking charge, especially the seniors, said Villa after his team completed what he called an “excellent practice. “They have to step up if they want to go out as champions and have a deep playoff run. The Lady Bruins are also preparing themselves for a gruelling nonleague schedule. The Lady Bruins face 4A powers Hidden Valley, Scappoose and Phoenix as part of their early season schedule. “I ask (BHHS athletic Director) Buell (Gonzales Jr.) for the tough games, said Villa. “The only way you are going to get better is by matching up against those teams that are going to be in the playoffs and state championships.

Two of the Far West League’s top goalscorers,Tyrah Baron, left, and league MVP Siena Worthey return to for their junior seasons, meaning FWL teams will have to face the formidible duo for two more seasons.
Though they return a solid core of players, they are missing some key pieces from last year’s squad. Co-captains Crystal Rodriguez, a midfielder, and Jamie Macken, a winger, both graduated, as did one of their defensive leaders, Sonja Haro. BHHS will be looking for younger players to step up in those roles. “It’s a huge loss and we are not going to be able to replace them,” said reigning FWL MVP Siena Worthey. “Nobody is going to be able to step in and take their spots.” While the losses of key players will be an adjustment, Worthey believes it can be done with the talent BHHS possesses. “We’re not going to be able to replace Crystal in the midfield, so we are going to have to pass and play together and have some of our younger players step up,” she said. “There is not one single person that is going to be able to replace her.
We’re going to have to build up a few players and hope they can make stuff work the way Crystal could make stuff work.” Looking at the roster, the Lady Bruins are stacked with ability and talent. Juniors Worthey and Tyrah Baron are two of the league’s top goalscorers. The back line led by Drew Farmer, Bailey Neilson and Vanessa Hernandez is the best in the league, and players such as Hanna Leonard, Emma Murdock, Kylie Johnson and Chantelle Nelson fill out a roster ripe with talent and skill — which has the Lady Bruins thinking they can go further than last year, where they suffered a 1-0 first-round playoff loss to Gladstone. “I think it’s going to be a good season. Everyone is ready and everyone is pumped,” said Worthey. The targets seem to fit this team just fine.

Boys Basketball Last season, the Bruins lost all five starters from the previous season due to graduation, meaning they entered last season with only two players that had any varsity experience. This year’s squad is older and more experienced than last season, where they nearly made it to a play-in game. Players such as point guard Brandon Curtis, power forward Russ Nickels and shooting guard Buell Gonzales III gained valuable varsity minutes as underclassmen last season. With several starters returning, the Bruins should once again be a forced to be reckoned with in the Far West League.
Girls Basketball The Lady Bruins were one missed layup away from a berth in last season’s state playoffs, which likely leaves them with a hunger this season to get back to the state’s elite eight tournament. Look for the Lady Bruins to make it back to the state playoff tourney as well as repeat as Far West League champions this season. Head coach Chris Schofield’s pressure defense has always been difficult for opposing teams to handle and this season, his may have his best lineup yet to institute it. All-state point guard Drew Farmer returns for her senior season and will have a host of excellent complimentary players alongside her, such as allleague defender Vanessa Hernandez, small forward Courtney Bay, and her younger sister, sharpshooter Abbey Farmer.

Baseball Last season, the Bruins were rebuilding with a young crop of talented underclassmen. The experience they gained is invaluable and should lead to a much improved team in 2016. Led by second team FWL catcher Jess Fitzhugh and FWL honoarble mention Noah James, the Bruins should be formidable in league once again.

Small in numbers with just four wrestlers competing last season, the Bruins sent one of their own, Isaiah “The Boss Ross to the state tournament. Likely due to the experience of head coach Ted Burdett and his assistants Bret Curtis and Evan Peterson. Ross is back for his junior season and should be joined by team captain Jess Fitzhugh and Tyson Manion as the Bruins hope to increase their roster and send more wrestlers to the state meet.

Fall Sports Preview 2015– Page 21
Brookings-Harbor High School Winter/Spring Preview Softball Similar to what the Bruins baseball team went through last season, the Lady Bruins went through a rebuilding year in 2015, having just one senior on the team. The Lady Bruins did end their season on a five-game winning streak and were playing their best softball at the end of the 2015 season, barely missing the playoffs. For 2016, the Lady Bruins will have more experience and a better grasp of head coach Kelly Garvin’s aggressive, “small ball” style offense that has the ability to manufacture a large amount of runs, BHHS should be a playoff team, if not a league champion. Returning all-league players Tyrah Baron and Jonna Leddy will be accompanied by talented and speedy players such as Bailey Neilson and Hailee Murray. If they can find someone to eat up innings on the mound, the Lady Bruins should participate in the playoffs in 2016.
The Pilot / Ryan Sparks
BHHS infielder Hailee Murray will be one of the returning starters for a Lady Bruins softball team that ended last season with five straight victories.
Track and Field Terry Axel’s second season as track and field coach should be exciting. With several potential state qualifiers on his roster, the Bruins are likely to earn some more hardware in Eugene come this spring. Look for distance runner Chris Burton and pole vaulter Ryan Botnen as two promising league championship contenders.

Brookings-Harbor High High School School Cheerleading Preview Brookings-Harbor
Cheer team back competing after taking a year off By Ryan Sparks Pilot staff writer
Last season, BHHS cheer coach Alice Sandusky made a difficult and gut-wrenching decision just one day ahead of her team’s first competition of the season. She suspended the entire squad. Why such a drastic step? Coaches, herself included, had observed several instances of cyberbullying amongst the team’s ranks. So Sandusky, along with athletic director Buell Gonzales Jr., made the decision to suspend the team for a few days and cancel any competitions for the 2014-2015 school year. “It was a really hard decision but I feel like it was the right one, said Sandusky. “(The cyberbullying) was so broad that I said, ‘We are not competing.’ I found a few more instances that were just unacceptable, so I brought the team in and told them (we weren’t competing), and of course a few of them quit after that. The message had been received by her athletes — bullying of any kind is not to be tolerated and any further evidence of anyone doing so, will be grounds for the perpetrator to be removed from the team. According to Sandusky, that tough love approach worked. Her squad became more cohesive near the end of school year by accepting a team attitude and mentality. The
cohesiveness has carried over heading into the 2015-2016 school year. “We’re keeping in touch with each other — creating friendships rather than just a bond because we are in cheer together, said senior Kaymon Townsend who, along with her best friend, Madison Rodne, are co-captains on the 2015-2016 squad. “The plan is to do stuff together outside of cheer, maybe on the weekend have a little bonding activity, said Rodne, also a senior. The squad plans on competing in a approximately four total dance and cheer competitions this year though Sandusky admits they are still working out the details. Sandusky adds that they plan on doing several community projects, such as donating their time to the Oasis Women’s Shelter, as well as helping with the “Volley for the Cure game cancer benefit volleyball game, holding a “Little Bruins Cheer Camp at the Sept. 18 football game, and a special, top-secret halftime performance at the Bruins/Siuslaw football game on Oct. 23. “A lot of things are going to be different, said Townsend of this year’s team. “It’s more of a fun, energetic season, with no drama. “Being our last year, we want to make it great, added Rodne. “We want people to remember the class of 2016.

Gold Beach High School Winter/Spring Preview There’s plenty of Gold Beach High School sports to get excited about in the 2015-2016 school year! Here’s a quick look at the GBHS winter and spring sports teams.
Boys Basketball Legendary Gold Beach basketball coach Jerry Ross took the reigns of the Panther team last season and made it to the league playoffs. They lose their captain and leading scorer, Garrett Dolan and allleague defensive player C.J. Bellanio to graduation, but they retain a core of solid roundballers. This season, with returning allleague players Skyler Floyd, Justin Jacobs and Jacob Carpenter, the Panthers have a legitimate shot at being one of the top two teams in the league coming out of the league playoffs. Their experience should lead them to the league-title game and a spot in the state playoffs.
Girls Basketball Last season, head coach Chris Clark led the Lady Panthers to the 2A playoffs. He loses two key players from last season’s squad in Savanna Rucker and Morrgain Clifford, but retains arguably his best player — point guard Hailey Timeus. With Timeus running the offense and a core of underclassmen seeking to make an impact at the varsity level, the Lady Panthers have real shot at dethroning perennial powerhouse Myrtle Point. Another trip to the state playoffs is likely in their future. Wrestling Head coach Beau Hanson entered his first year at the helm of a Panthers program rich with tradition and championships last season. Hanson had no problem retaining the standards of the Gold Beach program, as his wrestlers earned one state championship and six top-4
placements as he sent a large contingent of his wrestlers to the state meet. State champion Jade Piper returns for her sophomore season and look for wrestlers such as Wes Turner, Taylor Bright and Rocky Lilly to compete for a state title and likely continue Gold Beach wrestling’s unprecedented streak.
Baseball At the time of this writing, the Gold Beach baseball program is in a bit of a flux. Last season, Allan Goebel took over for former head coach Greg Brown, whose team won a league title in 2014. Goebel has since moved out of state, leaving a void at the helm of the Gold Beach program. Whoever does take over as head coach will have a core of young players that gained valuable varsity experience last season and should be
much improved in 2016.
Softball The Lady Panthers took a huge step last season in dominating the Special District 5 league and winning a thrilling home playoff game. Though they lose a dominant starting pitcher in Savanna Rucker (graduation), they have the core of their league-championship winning team, including several all-league players, returning. Hailey Timeus, Jade Piper and Jordan Rucker are just a few of the stellar returning starters for Gold Beach softball. With first baseman Heidi Hancock, who missed most of last season after being injured in a vehicle accident, returning for her senior season, the Lady Panthers will be favorites to claim another league title under head coach Jerry Ross, and possibly make a deep playoff run.

Gold Beach High School Winter/Spring Preview Golf The Gold Beach golf team, which competed in the state championship meet as a team as recently as two seasons ago, is in a bit of a flux right now after the departure of their head coach. The Panthers are currently looking for a new head coach after Gary Hockema, who led the Panthers to the state playoffs in 2014, stepped down this summer. With several candidates rumored to be up for the job, Gold Beach’s golf team will have to deal with the loss of it’s two major stars, Brennan Eilik and Shane Roberts, to graduation. Head coach Dana Newdall saw her small track and field squad (five athletes) grab multiple medals at the state championship meet last season. That should bode well for her young team as success usually brings about more athletes. Though the team loses her son, Lincoln, to graduation, they are led by several talented underclassmen in junior Kaitlin Armstrong, who medaled in the 800-meters at state, and sophomores Avi Gaston and Paris Newdall. All three athletes have a great shot at bringing home plenty more hardware from the state meet, and possibly a state championship or two.
