Providing the best in hearing technology

You can trust your hearing to Pacific Coast Hearing We believe in the power of clear, accurate communication. That’s why we do more than just treat you. We listen to you. Most importantly, we offer real hearing solutions that fit who you are and how you live. An estimated 28 million people in the United States suffer from some degree of hearing impairment. And as America’s population ages, hearing loss is becoming more prevalent. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, hearing impairment is the third most common problem affecting the baby boom generation. The good news is that most hearing losses can be effectively treated with digital amplification. But because the onset of hearing loss tends to be gradual, the key to effective treatment and rehabilitation is identifying a hearing loss in the early stages. Hearing loss can significantly reduce the quality of life that people work so hard to achieve. It can restrict and inhibit a person’s ability to interact with other people, prevent them from hearing vital information, cause misunderstandings in conversations, heighten stress, increase fatigue, and may even

shorten life expectancy. Early identification plays a vital role in limiting the adverse effects of hearing loss. It begins with a simple hearing evaluation and words of encouragement from family and friends. If you’ve had questions about your hearing, it’s probably time to have it evaluated. In some cases, the problem may be accumulated earwax blocking the ear canal and a quick removal of wax is all that’s required. Pacific Coast Hearing Center offers free hearing screenings for qualified candidates. All screenings are done in a sound treated booth with the most up-to-date equipment and technology available. Let Pacific Coast Hearing Center help you hear what you have been missing. Pacific Coast Hearing Center, located at 638 Railroad St. in Brookings, is open five days a week for your convenience. For more information or to schedule an appointment please call 541-469-3511 or toll-free (800) 887-4327. Submitted by Pacific Coast Hearing Center

The importance of Copper in your diet Two tablespoons of peanut butter contain 0.6 mg of copper

Copper is a required nutrient found naturally in such foods as seafood, liver, green vegetables, whole grains, lentils and nuts. Copper helps to regulate blood pressure and is needed to absorb iron. Some laboratory studies have suggested that copper may have antioxidant and anti-cancer properties, but high levels of copper have also been linked to a higher risk of certain can-

cers. Some people wear copper bracelets to help with arthritis, but there is no scientific evidence supporting the practice. Most people get enough copper from eating a balanced diet, although copper is generally added to multivitamins as well. Copper pipes and cookware also leach minute particles of copper into water or food. Copper toxicity is rare, but adults are advised not to take more than 10 milligrams per day, due to an increased risk of liver damage. People with Wilson's disease, a genetic disorder that allows copper to build up in the body, should not take copper supplements. Diabetics should also avoid supplements containing copper, as the mineral can affect blood sugar levels. People with a copper deficiency can also have low iron levels, to the point of anemia, and may develop osteoporosis. Zinc supplements and large doses of vitamin C can block copper absorption.

No butts about it Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do for your health Did you or someone you love resolve to quit smoking for New Year’s? The American Lung Association is here to help you keep that resolution. January is the perfect time for a fresh start, and with today’s economic challenges, quitting smoking is not only good for your health, it’s good for your wallet. At current prices, when a pack-a-day smoker quits, it’s like getting a $2000 bonus—tax free—every year! Having a solid plan can be the key. Here are seven tips for success and resources that have helped thousands give up smoking for good: Talk to your doctor about the different over-the-counter and prescription medications and various types of treatments available to help you quit smoking. Look into the different options available to help smokers quit. Visit www.lungusa.org for tools like Freedom From Smoking® Online. Take time to plan. Pick your quit date a few weeks ahead of time and mark it on the calendar. If you can,

pick a day that isn’t stressful, such as after the holidays. As your Quit Day approaches, gather the medications and tools you need and map out how you’re going to handle situations that make you want to smoke. Get some exercise every day. Walking is a great way to reduce the stress of quitting. Exercise is proven to not only combat weight gain, but also improves mood and energy levels. Eat a balanced diet; drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep. Ask family, friends and co-workers for their help and support. Having someone to take a walk with or just listen can give a needed boost. You don’t have to quit alone. Help is

available. Consider joining a s t o p smoking program like Freedom From Smoking® offered by the American Lung Association. For even more help, call our Lung HelpLine at 1-800-LUNG-USA. Our nurses and respiratory therapists can provide expert advice on quitting smoking. “Be aware that smokers have different experiences when they quit,” says Norman Edelman, M.D. American Lung Association Chief Medical Officer. “Some may feel tired or even easily excitable. Others may feel lightheaded, nervous or irritable and experience headaches in addition to craving

tobacco or sweets. Know that these feelings are normal and may last for several weeks, but eventually they will pass.” The American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® program has helped hundreds of thousands quit smoking and is considered the gold standard for smoking cessation programs. This program is offered over eight sessions in a group setting, since the support of others is a beneficial component of the quitting process. And perfect for today’s busy world is Freedom From Smoking® Online (http://www.ffsonline.org/) which brings the same proven program into the comfort and privacy of your own home. “Quitting smoking is one of the most important things that you can do for your health,” adds Dr. Edelman. “The earlier you quit the better, but it’s important to remember that it’s never too late to quit. The American Lung Association offers the best tools and resources available.”

A better life begins with Barron’s Many products are available that are designed to improve your quality of life. We at Barron’s believe a better life begins with a good night’s sleep. Tempurpedic – “The most recommended bed in America” – has been helping us change the way people sleep for over eight years and is truly different than other open celled visco-elastic products. TEMPUR pressure relieving material is a breakthrough in sleep technology that simply looks and feels like new longer than any other product. The story of this revolutionary material, the heart and soul of all Tempurpedic products, begins with NASA’s research to develop a material to relieve the tremendous G-forces experienced by astronauts. The Swedish scientists, realizing the enormous potential of the material, spent nearly a decade and millions of research dollars perfecting TEMPUR material as the ultimate sleep surface. The results: 91% of Tempur-Pedic owners say their expectations of their mattress have been met, 93% of Tempur-Pedic owners are satisfied overall with their mattress, 95% of TempurPedic owners are satisfied with the comfort of their mattress, 96% of TempurPedic owners are satisfied with the quality of their mattress, 92% of TempurPedic owners recommend the Tempur-

Pedic brand to family, friends and coworkers. What prevents us from getting deep restful sleep? Many of our customers complain about pain, numbness, cut off circulation, breathing obstruction and pressure points. We at Barron’s believe the right combinations of comfort and support paired with the right pillow can improve the way we feel when we wake. A good night’s sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. It affects all aspects of your day: from how you feel, to your relationships, productivity and ultimately, your quality of life. While you sleep, your brain goes to work, consolidating the day’s learning into memory and re-energizes the body. The average individual requires 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night, but it differs for everyone. Some people many need as much as 10 hours a night, while others need much less. It’s a safe bet, however, that if you sleep longer on the weekends than you do during the week, you aren’t meeting your personal sleep requirement. Your mattress has the potential to make or break a good night’s sleep. If you’re tossing and turning more at night or if you’re waking up feeling stiff in the morning, it could be a sign that your current mattress is no longer the best for you. Your body appreciates a comfort-

Quality heart and cancer care just beyond your front door at St. Joseph’s Hospital

A team approach to heart care Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. We at St. Joseph and Redwood Memorial hospitals have joined the fight against heart disease by establishing ourselves as leading providers of quality cardiovascular care on the North Coast. The Heart Institute at St. Joseph Hospital has pioneered the way to provide state-of-theart cardiovascular services to North Coast residents. This means quality cardiac care

close to home that includes prevention, education, diagnostic and treatment services, as well as a full cardiac rehabilitation program. The St. Joseph Hospital Heart Institute team has focused on performance ratings for three important indicators from the National Registry of Myocardial Infarction (NRMI). The team received the high ratings in the: • Time to medication upon arrival at Emergency

Room. Score: 100 percent. Studies show that early treatment with aspirin reduces mortality from Acute Myocardial Infarction (heart attack). • Time taken to receive angioplasty. Average time: 80 minutes. This is the time from when a patient first comes to the emergency room and receives diagnosis, has a cardiologist notified, is transported to the Cath Lab, and has angioplasty/stenting performed. Providing care in 90

minutes is the national goal for achieving optimal care. • Patient referral to Cardiac Rehabilitation. Over 80 percent of cardiac patients at St. Joseph Hospital receive education or referrals for Cardiac Rehab. Other hospitals in the study (over 1,200) reported only a 25 percent average referral rate. Learn more about St. Joseph Hospital’s Heart Institute at www.stjosepheureka.org. Cancer Program offers comprehensive services St. Joseph Hospital’s Cancer Program has been recognized by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons as offering the very best in cancer care and treatment. The Cancer Program offers comprehensive services for cancer diagnosis and treatment, including: Prostate Seed Implants This technique essentially treats the prostate from the inside out rather than from the outside in. Decreased radiation doses to the surrounding normal tissues may decrease both the short term and long term side effects, and this

treatment requires only two procedures at St. Joseph Hospital. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) This newer type of radiation therapy means higher cure rates and fewer side effects through more exact and focused treatment. IMRT allows for pinpoint accuracy in targeting tumors, while at the same time greatly reducing the radiation dose to healthy vital tissues. IMRT technology has already contributed to substantially improved clinical outcomes in prostate cancer, according to studies in the Journal of Radiation, Oncology, Biology and Physics.

High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR) High dose rate brachytherapy is a form of radiotherapy commonly used to treat gynecologic cancers. For selected cases of breast cancer, the MammoSite catheter is used for treatment and therapy and can be completed in just one week, rather than the standard treatment of six weeks. PET/CT - the all-in-one full body scan The newest diagnostic system for detecting cancer at St. Joseph Hospital is called a PET/CT Scan -- the only one of its kind in Humboldt County. It

HEALTH AND FITNESS 2011– Page 11

is a combination of Positron Emission Tomography (PET), which detects cellular activity, and Computerized Tomography (CT), which reveals a crosssection of body tissues and organs. With the help of a PET/CT scan, physicians can now detect cancers, as well as some heart disease and brain disorders, at a much earlier stage. Weight-loss surgery: Varied techniques and patient support all along the way Bay Bariatrics is devoted to helping patients suffering from obesity discover new health and vitality through weightloss surgery. We support our patients all along the way, from researching options to comprehensive follow-up care after surgery. Bariatrics is the medical field specializing in causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity. The term morbid obesity is used as a diagnosis for people who are 75 to 100 pounds overweight who are at serious risk for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other medical problems. At Bay Bariatrics we understand excess weight results in more than just physical problems. You may face discrimination, inability to

find proper-fitting clothing, and limited access to chairs in theaters, restaurants, and airplanes. Economic impacts include difficulty in finding employment or denial of insurance coverage. We offer hope for people experiencing these challenges. Weight-loss surgery is a solution for people who are morbidly obese and are unsuccessful with dieting, exercise, and other weight-loss programs. Bay Bariatrics has a long-standing record of successful outcomes with lead surgeon Steven Tersigni, MD, FACS, who is board certified and has more than 14 years of experience. Dr. Tersigni is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the American

Medical Association, Southwestern Surgical Association, Oregon Chapter of American College of Surgeons, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery has recognized Bay Bariatrics with the designation as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. Only four bariatric centers in Oregon meet such stringent standards. Patients at Bay Bariatrics benefit from the unique partnership of Bay Area Hospital, Dr. Tersigni, and North Bend Medical Center. Our multi-disciplinary approach includes pre- and post-surgery education and support. We become the

“medical home for patients who have access to services that include nursing, nutrition, psychology, physical therapy, and peer support groups. Weight-loss surgery options offered include gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and laparoscopic adjustable band. Each patient has unique needs and any weight-loss surgery will also include dietary, exercise, and lifestyle changes that are necessary for long-term success. You may find it helpful to discuss the pros and cons of weight-loss surgery with a family member, friend, or former patient. Eye care specialists for all your eye care needs

Local doctors offer big experience at Pacific Vision Medical Center Pacific Vision Medical Center (PVMC) offers a complete team of board certified eye care specialists who treat you, right here, along America’s Wild Rivers Coast. If someone tells you our rural area doesn’t offer specialized eye care – call us to experience what our patients have appreciated for over 20 years. Our ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians all play an important role in providing skilled and compassionate eye care services. OPHTHALMOLOGIST – licensed medical doctors who have additional training in eye and vision care. Ophthalmologists provide the full spectrum of eye care, from complex and delicate eye surgery to prescribing glasses. Dr. Larry Eninger and Dr. David Cink are board certified, experienced and caring ophthalmologists providing the highest level of eye care, and are committed to offering services and technology that are on the forefront of eye care treatment.

Upon completion of medical school, both doctors served as medical officers and flight surgeons in the U.S. Navy, providing comprehensive medical care for pilots and the Naval community. Dr. Cink appreciates the experience, “I use the knowledge and skills I gained as a flight surgeon in my care of patients every day. I treated diabetic and hypertensive patients, delivered babies and took care of sick kids in the Navy for years, so I clearly understand the connection of the eye to the rest of the body.” Eninger and Cink continued their medical careers by completing a three year ophthalmology residency at the Naval Hospital San Diego, the world's largest military hospital. Dr. Eninger then joined the staff at the Naval Hospital, training future ophthalmologists until he joined the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in San Diego. Dr. Cink was on staff at the Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC, where he also served as the family practice resident

instructor in ophthalmology. The lure of the Wild Rivers Coast eventually wooed these two doctors to bring their big city experience to a place they could call home and raise their families. Dr. Eninger reflects, “I practiced in San Diego clinics where doctors from all over, including this area, would send their patients with complicated cases. Now I enjoy living here while offering the expert care that some think only big cities can offer.” OPTOMETRIST – receives a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree and is licensed to practice optometry. The practice of optometry traditionally involves examining the eye for the purpose of prescribing and dispensing corrective lenses and screening vision to detect certain eye abnormalities. Dr. Karl Bruhns is a skilled optometrist who joined PVMC in 1996. He received his degree from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1984. His training included service at Madigan Army

Medical Center and the Los Angeles Veterans Administration. He practiced optometry in southern California with ophthalmologists and in private practice settings until joining PVMC. He emphasizes family practice and the fitting of contact lenses. OPTICIAN – an optician is trained to design, verify and fit eyeglass lenses and frames, contact lenses, and other devices to correct eyesight. We are proud to have five certified opticians who can help you with all your glasses needs. Our optical manager, Matthew Long, holds a master optician license and oversees our optical shops. From all of the certified eye professionals at PVMC, “we look forward to helping you receive the best eye care along American’s Wild Rivers Coast.” In Brookings call, 541-469-5800, in Crescent City call, 707-465-2020. It is recommended that children as young as age 7, be evaluated for proper development of their teeth and jaws. Occasionally, early orthodontic intervention is needed. However, braces are typically placed after most permanent teeth are in place (ages 11 to 14). Increasing numbers of adults are also enjoying the benefits of orthodontic treatment. Treatment typically lasts one to three years. Treatment length depends on age, severity of the problem, and the partnership agreement between patient and doctor. West Orthodontics is proud to bring state of the art orthodontic technology to Del Norte and Curry counties. Call us today for your complimentary consultation, 541-469-2131. Many factors are linked to breast cancer risk. Some factors affect risk a great deal and others by only a small amount. Some risk factors you can’t change. Elderly women can find many benefits in strength training Strength training can prevent falls and reduce health care costs for elderly women, a study shows. A once-weekly strength-training program for elderly women can help reduce health care costs and improve cognitive functioning, according to a study published last month in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The study followed seniors who had completed a 12-month tailored exercise program and tracked them for another year. Even though the exercise program

had ended, many of the test subjects continued strength training on their own. The study found that the women who underwent the weekly strengthtraining program were more active after the study had ended than they had been before the study. They scored better on tests of cognitive functioning and had lower health care costs. They also experienced fewer falls than mem-

bers of the control group, which had conducted balance and toning exercises. The once-weekly group also showed more gains over the long term than those who did strength training twice a week. “What we realized was that this group was more successful at being able to maintain the same level of physical activity,” said Teresa Liu-Ambrose, an assistant professor of physical therapy at the University of British Co-

in lumbia Va n c o u v e r, Canada, and principal investigator of the study. — Markian Hawryluk, The Bulletin

Dreams: Guidance from within Throughout history dreams have provided illumination to seekers and inspiration to creators and scientists. The key to inventing the lockstitch sewing machine was given to Elias Howe in a nightmare. Scientist Kekulé was unsuccessful in determining the structure of Benzene until it was finally revealed to him in a dream. Every night a deep inner source of wisdom and creativity speaks directly to

us about our most pressing concerns. Dreamwork is the process of tapping into this source and using it to transform and guide us. I bring 40 years of intensive dream study to my practice helping others discover the significance of their dreams. Imagine finding from within specific solutions to what most concerns you!
