Providing the best in hearing technology

OUR REMARKABLE MANAGERS At Sea View, our residents' happiness and comfort are our top priority. Let us introduce you to our management team....

You can trust your hearing to us At Pacific Coast Hearing, we believe in the power of clear, accurate communication. That’s why we do more than just treat you. We listen to you. Most importantly, we offer real hearing solutions that fit who you are and how you live. An estimated 28 million people in the United States suffer from some degree of hearing impairment. And as America’s population ages, hearing loss is becoming more prevalent. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, hearing impairment is the third most common problem affecting the baby boom generation.

The good news is that most hearing losses can be effectively treated with digital amplification. But because the onset of hearing loss tends to be gradual, the key to effective treatment and rehabilitation is identifying a hearing loss in the early stages. Hearing loss can significantly reduce the quality of life that people work so hard to achieve. It can restrict and inhibit a person’s ability to interact with other people, prevent them from hearing vital information, cause misunderstandings in conversations, heighten stress, increase

Sandy Hicks - Executive Director

fatigue, and may even shorten life expectancy. Early identification plays a vital role in limiting the adverse effects of hearing loss. It begins with a simple hearing evaluation and words of encouragement from family and friends. If you’ve had questions about your hearing, it’s probably time to have it evaluated. In some cases, the problem may be accumulated earwax blocking the ear canal and a quick removal of wax is all that’s required. Pacific Coast Hearing Center offers free hearing screenings for

qualified candidates. All screenings are done in a sound treated booth with the most up-to-date equipment and technology available. Let Pacific Coast Hearing Center help you hear what you have been missing. Pacific Coast Hearing Center, located at 638 Railroad St. in Brookings, is open five days a week for your convenience. For more information or to schedule an appointment please call 541-4693511 or toll-free (800) 887-4327. Submitted by Pacific Coast Hearing Center

She is responsible for all business related activities including billing and accounts receivable, payroll and personnel files, and accounts payable. Be sure to ask Alice if you have any questions on your invoice.

Ease into the workout habit with 15 minutes, 3 times a week by Ellen Warren, Chicago Tribune “Maybe you love to eat but hate to exercise,” Jim Karas proposes. For most of us, that about sums it up. Karas wants to help you get over the exercise part of that equation. “The biggest hurdle you will ever face in losing weight isn’t sticking to a diet or going to the gym every day. It’s simply this: getting started,” he says. Can you spare 15 minutes, three times a week? Trainer and author Karas

says that’s enough to get you off to a good start. “If you’re doing nothing, this is absolutely a step in the right direction,” says Karas, who blogs (and sells his fitness products) at jimkaras.com. Just those 45 minutes weekly will rev up your metabolism, increase your energy, and make you look and feel better, he says.

“You don’t have to have equipment. You don’t have to go to the gym,” he says. Instead, he recommends taking three basic exercises – pushups, Pilates planks, and squats or lunges — and doing each until “you’re almost out of breath.” Then repeat the series “until you fill up 15 minutes” three times weekly. Instructions for all of these are all over the internet.

And yes, he disagrees with federal guidelines that recommend 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity (or 2½ hours of moderate exercise). In most exercise regimens, “the neglected variable is intensity,” Karas says. “If you really get in there and get the job done, you optimize results and you save yourself time.”

Coastal Wellness Center offers a holistic path to health If you are like most people who come to us for help, then you most likely have a chronic health condition that impacts your personal life and have tried conventional medicine or alternative practitioners, without the hoped for results. If you have an underlying health condition, the most likely factor is heavy metal or toxic chemicals found in organs of the body. Unless these conditions are removed, the chronic condition will persist. Nutrition Response Testing is a non-invasive system of analyzing the body to determine underlying causes of ill health. When causes are corrected through safe, natural, nutritional means, the body can repair itself and attain optimum health. Coastal Wellness Center offers the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), a treatment using increased atmospheric pressure and concentrated

oxygen inside an inflatable chamber allowing more oxygen to reach cells for healing/therapeutic benefits. Some conditions successfully treated with HBOT include depression, stroke/brain injury, chemo/radiation tissue and nerve damage, diabetic ulcers, inflammation/arthritis (all forms), heart disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, autism/ADD and anti-aging. Medicare or private insurance may cover HBOT for approved conditions. Coastal Wellness Nutritional Support uses Standard Process organic whole foods. For weight loss we use hCG (human chorionic gonadotropain) – you can lose up to one pound a day. Improve your body’s ability to heal! Good news: Sex is safe for most heart patients. If you’re healthy enough to walk up two flights of stairs without chest pain or gasping for breath, you can have a love life. That advice from a leading doctors’ group on Thursday addresses one of the most pressing, least-discussed issues facing survivors of heart attacks and other heart patients. In its first science-based recommendations on the subject, the American Heart Association says having sex only slightly raises the chance for a heart attack. And that’s true for people with and without heart disease.

Despite the higher risk for a heart patient to have a second attack, there’s no evidence that they have more sex-related heart attacks than people without cardiac disease. Many heart patients don’t think twice about climbing stairs, yet many worry that sexual activity will cause another heart attack, or even sudden death, said Dr. Glenn Levine, lead author of the report. The report says sex is something doctors should bring up with all heart patients. Yet few do because they’re uncomfortable talking about it or they lack information, Levine said.

It’s estimated that more than 40 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a week, with around 25 million folks who suffer from it daily. If you’re plagued by heartburn two or more times a week, and it’s not responding well to over-thecounter antacids, you need to see your doctor. Frequent bouts may mean you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) which can severely irritate and damage the lining of the esophagus, putting you at risk of Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer, if it’s not treated. Lifestyle Adjustments Depending on the frequency and severity of your heartburn, there are a number of lifestyle adjustments you can make that can help you get relief and

avoid a more serious problem down the road. Consider these tips: • Adjust your diet: Certain foods can trigger heartburn symptoms like citrus fruits, tomatoes, fatty foods, chocolate, garlic, onions, spicy foods, mints, alcohol, coffee and sodas. Keep a food diary to track which foods cause you the most problems and avoid them. • Eat less: Take smaller portions and eat slower. Having a full stomach can cause acid reflux. Also avoid exercising, bending or lying down for two hours after eating. And don’t eat at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime. • Monitor your meds: Drugs used to treat arthritis pain, asthma, osteoporosis, depression, insomnia, high blood pressure and more can cause heartburn.

West Orthodontics has been treating patients from Del Norte and Curry counties for over a decade. Dr. West and Dr. McDonald are proud to serve this community and are dedicated to giving every new patient a healthy beautiful smile that will last a lifetime. Dr. West earned his bachelor of science from Brigham Young University and graduated cum laude with a doctoral degree in Dentistry from Southern Illinois University. He received his master of science degree from St. Louis University School of Orthodontics. Dr. West is proud to be distinguished as a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and is also a member of many professional organizations such as the American Association of Orthodontics, the American Dental Association, the Oregon Dental Association, and the Southern Oregon Dental Society. Dr. McDonald attended the University of Michigan for both his undergrad and dental school education. After dental school, he served in the U.S. Army for four years then returned to the University of Michigan where he received, with honors, a master’s degree in orthodontics. Dr. McDonald has served his profession in multiple capacities and has received several prestigious rewards for those activities. He is one of only three recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the

Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists. He is also a teacher and serves as an assistant professor of orthodontics at the University of Oregon School of Dentistry at OHSU, and travels throughout the U.S. teaching and lecturing. He is a diplomate of, and past examiner for the American Board of Orthodontics, a member of the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association. Orthodontic treatment is appropriate for both children and adults. Comprehensive orthodontics produces a beautiful smile, improved dental health, and can increase self confidence. It is recommended that children as young as age 7, should be evaluated for proper development of their teeth and jaws. Occasionally, early orthodontic intervention is needed. However, braces are typically placed after most permanent teeth are in place (ages 11 to 14). Increasing numbers of adults are also enjoying the benefits of orthodontic treatment. Treatment typically lasts one to three years. Treatment length depends on age, severity of the problem, and the partnership agreement between patient and doctor. West Orthodontics is proud to bring state of the art orthodontic technology to Del Norte and Curry counties. Call us today for your complimentary consultation, 541-469-2131. • Lose weight: Being overweight is a big contributor to heartburn because the excess pounds put pressure on your abdomen, pushing up your stomach and causing acid to back up into your esophagus. • Stop smoking: Smoking can increase stomach acid and weaken the valve that prevents stomach acid from entering the esophagus. • Loosen up: Clothes that fit tightly around your waist puts pressure on your abdomen and can cause heartburn. • Relax: Over 50 percent of heartburn sufferers say stress increases their heartburn. • Sleep better: To help keep the acid down in your stomach while you sleep, elevate the head of your bed six to eight inches by placing blocks under the legs or insert a wedge between your mattress and box spring to elevate your body from the waist up. Sleeping on your left side may also help keep the acid down. Treatment Options If the lifestyle adjustments don’t solve the problem, or if antacids (Tums, Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta or Alka-Seltzer) aren’t doing the trick there are a variety of over-

the-counter and prescription medications that can help along with a surgical option. Your doctor can help you determine which one is best for you. Treatment options include: H-2 Blockers: Available as both overthe-counter and prescription strength, these drugs (Pepcid, Tagamet, Axid and Zantac) reduce how much acid your stomach makes but may not be strong enough for serious symptoms. Proton-Pump Inhibitors (PPI): If you have frequent and severe heartburn symptoms, PPIs are long-acting prescription medications that block acid production and allow time for damaged esophageal tissue to heal. They include Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Aciphex and Zegerid. Prevacid, Prilosec and Zegerid are also available over-the-counter. But be aware that long-term use of PPIs can reduce the amount of calcium your body absorbs and increase your risk for osteoporosis. Surgery: An alternative to drug treatments is anti-reflux surgery, a procedure that tightens the leaky valve so gastric fluids can’t wash back up into the esophagus.

A better life begins with Barron’s are satisfied with the quality, • 92 percent of Tempur-Pedic owners recommend the Tempur-Pedic brand to family, friends and co-workers. What prevents us from getting deep restful sleep? Many of our customers complain about pain, numbness, cut off circulation, breathing obstruction and pressure points. We at Barron’s believe the right combinations of comfort and support paired with the right pillow can improve the way we feel when we wake. A good night’s sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. It affects all aspects of your day: from how you feel, to your relationships, productivity and ultimately, your quality of life. While you sleep, your brain goes to work, consolidating the day’s learning into memory and re-energizes the body. The average individual requires 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night, but it differs for everyone. Some people need as much as 10 hours a night, while others need less. Your mattress has the potential to make or break a good night’s sleep. If you’re tossing and turning more at night or if you’re waking up feeling stiff in the morning, it could be a sign that your current mattress is no longer the best for you. Your body appreciates a comfortable, supportive mattress and will let you know if what

Many products are available that are designed to improve your quality of life. We at Barron’s believe a better life begins with a good night’s sleep. Tempurpedic – “The most recommended bed in America” – has been helping us change the way people sleep for more than eight years and is truly different than other open celled visco-elastic products. TEMPUR pressure relieving material is a breakthrough in sleep technology that simply looks and feels like new longer than any other product. The story of this revolutionary material, the heart and soul of all Tempurpedic products, begins with NASA’s research to develop a material to relieve the tremendous G-forces experienced by astronauts. The Swedish scientists, realizing the enormous potential of the material, spent nearly a decade and millions of research dollars perfecting TEMPUR material as the ultimate sleep surface. The results: • 91 percent of Tempur-Pedic owners say their expectations of their mattress have been met, • 93 percent of Tempur-Pedic owners are satisfied overall with their mattress, • 95 percent of Tempur-Pedic owners are satisfied with the comfort, • 96 percent of Tempur-Pedic owners

If you’re trying to shed the holiday pounds you picked up, drop the midmorning snack, say researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. In studying 123 overweight to obese Seattle-area women between the ages 50 and 75 for one year, researchers found that those who grabbed a snack between breakfast and lunch lost less weight than those who skipped a midmorning snack. Midmorning snackers lost an average of 7 percent of their body weight. Those who ate a healthy breakfast but didn’t snack lost more than 11 percent of their body weight. Snacking is generally thought of as a dieter’s tool to prevent true hunger

between meals that can sabotage a diet. “We think this finding may not relate necessarily to the time of day one snacks, but rather to the short interval between breakfast and lunch. Midmorning snacking therefore might be a reflection of recreational or mindless eating habits rather than eating to satisfy true hunger,” said Dr. Anne McTiernan. “Our study suggests that snacking may actually help with weight loss if not done too close to another meal, particularly if the snacks are healthy foods that can help you feel full without adding too many calories.”

When you need care… you need care After considerable research, Guardians By The Sea, LLC an Inhome Care Agency was established in June 2010 by Vickie Howell and Sandra Wonacott to fill a profound need in the Oregon South Coast area. Even though Guardians By The Sea is a new company, Vickie and Sandra bring a wealth of expertise, knowledge and experience to the care of seniors and disabled. Vickie and Sandra have been providing the highest quality of care for seniors and disabled for over 30 combined years. They started out very early in life as caregivers to people they loved and soon realized that this was a “life calling.”

It is their goal to enrich seniors’ lives, and give their families peace of mind in knowing their loved one(s) are well cared for and safe in their own homes. Providing a personal caregiver that will assist in helping seniors maintain an independent, dignified life style does that. They provide a wide range of services, which they tailor to each individual, taking into consideration particular needs, desires, likes and dislikes. They begin with an initial screening which includes a comprehensive, personalized care assessment. Together the care coordinator and client will create a personalized care

plan that fits their lifestyle. Guardians By The Sea, LLC supply staff members from personal caregivers (in a companionship capacity) to RNs for skilled nursing. This allows disabled and seniors to remain in their own homes. They strongly believe in hiring only those who truly love working with seniors and have the highest standards, integrity and compassion. Their caregivers participate in a thorough and multi-phased training program that helps them become extraordinary caregivers. They also do background criminal history checks and drug screening. Their

caregivers have the gift of giving of themselves with kindness and compassion to ensure nothing but the best for your loved ones. When you cannot be there yourself you can rest assured that their caring and qualified staff will give the highest quality care. We look forward to serving seniors and their families. You can reach us 24 hours a day Because when you need care, you NEED US… 541-661-7011 Submitted by Guardians By the Sea, LLC

Cancer Program offers comprehensive services St. Joseph Hospital’s Cancer Program has been recognized by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons as offering the very best in cancer care and treatment. The Cancer Program offers comprehensive services for cancer diagnosis and treatment, including: Prostate Seed Implants This technique essentially treats the prostate from the inside out rather than from the outside in. Decreased radiation doses to the surrounding normal tissues may decrease both the short-term and long-term side effects, and this treatment requires only two procedures at St. Joseph Hospital.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) This newer type of radiation therapy means higher cure rates and fewer side effects through more exact and focused treatment. IMRT allows for pinpoint accuracy in targeting tumors, while at the same time greatly reducing the radiation dose to healthy vital tissues. IMRT technology has already contributed to substantially improved clinical outcomes in prostate cancer, according to studies in the Journal of Radiation, Oncology, Biology and Physics. High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR) High dose rate brachytherapy is a

form of radiotherapy commonly used to treat gynecologic cancers. For selected cases of breast cancer, the MammoSite catheter is used for treatment and therapy and can be completed in just one week, rather than the standard treatment of six weeks. PET/CT - the all-in-one full body scan The newest diagnostic system for detecting cancer at St. Joseph Hospital is called a PET/CT Scan - the only one of its kind in Humboldt County. It is a combination of Positron Emission Tomography (PET), which detects cellular activity, and Computerized Tomography (CT), which

reveals a cross-section of body tissues and organs. With the help of a PET/CT scan, physicians can now detect cancers, as well as some heart disease and brain disorders, at a much earlier stage. Quality heart and cancer care just beyond your front door at St. Joseph Hospital A team approach to heart care Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. We at St. Joseph and Redwood Memorial hospitals have joined the fight against heart disease by establishing ourselves as leading providers of quality cardiovascular care on the North Coast of California. The Heart Institute at St. Joseph Hospital has pioneered the way to provide state-of-the-art cardiovascular services to North Coast residents. This means quality cardiac

care close to home that includes prevention, education, diagnostic and treatment services, as well as a full cardiac rehabilitation program. The St. Joseph Hospital Heart Institute team has focused on performance ratings for three important indicators from the National Registry of Myocardial Infarction (NRMI). The team received the high ratings in the: • Time to medication upon arrival at Emergency Room. Score: 100 percent. Studies show that

early treatment with aspirin reduces mortality from Acute Myocardial Infarction (heart attack). • Time taken to receive angioplasty. Average time: 80 minutes. This is the time from when a patient first comes to the emergency room and receives diagnosis, has a cardiologist notified, is transported to the Cath Lab, and has angioplasty/stenting performed. Providing care in 90 minutes is the national goal for achieving optimal care.

• Patient referral to Cardiac Rehabilitation. Over 80 percent of cardiac patients at St. Joseph Hospital receive education or referrals for Cardiac Rehab. Other hospitals in the study (over 1,200) reported only a 25 percent average referral rate. Learn more about St. Joseph Hospital’s Heart Institute at www.stjosepheureka.org. Advances in surgical eye care offer hope for better vision New technology available from your ophthalmologist in Brookings and Crescent City You probably know that if your vision changes you should schedule an exam with your ophthalmologist. Early detection of eye problems leads to better treatment and better outcomes. Recent advancements in the treatment of eye disease, including macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma now lead to better visual outcomes than at any other time in history. At Pacific Vision Medical Center, our surgeons offer the latest technology to help restore your vision to the best possible level. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) can cause the loss of your central vision. Unfortunately, it remains the #1 cause of blindness across America. However, the exciting news is that new treatment options are constantly under development. Intraocular injections using Lucentis & Avastin have much better success rates than any of the past treatments.

We also have the newly approved Eyelea available, adding yet another choice to your treatment. We offer intraocular injections for the treatment of wet AMD in the comfort and convenience of our two local offices. At Pacific Vision Medical Center we have the sophisticated technology required to perform fluorescein angiography and ocular coherence tomography to aid our diagnosis and treatment of your condition. We strive to stay current with the latest information in AMD therapy and will make the best recommendation for you based on examination and special testing as appropriate. A cataract is the clouding of your eye’s lens; treatment is surgical removal of the lens and insertion of a new, artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Both Dr. Larry Eninger and Dr. David Cink perform a minimally invasive, "no-stitch" cataract surgery called phacoemulsification.

Dr. Cink offers patients who desire completely "needle-less" surgery the option of topical anesthesia where only numbing drops are used before the surgery. Until recently, IOLs were only available to correct vision at one distance. These monofocal IOLs helped improve vision after cataract surgery, but patients typically wore glasses for near vision activities such as reading. Now, advancements in technology have produced multifocal IOLs that allow patients to see quite clearly at all distances – near, far and distances in between. IOLs are also available to correct astigmatism, greatly reducing the need for glasses for clear vision. Glaucoma is usually treated by using eye drops to lower the fluid pressure inside the eye. There are many different eye drops for glaucoma and your eye surgeon will choose the medication that is best for you. Sometimes eye drops are

inadequate or poorly tolerated and other therapies, such as laser procedures or surgery, are required. Your surgeons at Pacific Vision Medical Center have the knowledge, lasers and surgical skills to do whatever is appropriate to control your glaucoma. Technology is constantly improving the treatment of diseases and vision restoration. At Pacific Vision Medical Center, we continually upgrade both our skills and the equipment necessary to provide you with the latest and best service possible, right here, along America’s Wild Rivers Coast. If you have eye care needs, rest assured that highly skilled and compassionate care is available in your home town. In Brookings call 541-469-5800, in Crescent City call 707-465-2020. Fitness tips from Veranda Park’s personal trainer Kim: • “Take Little Steps To Improve Your Health” - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires adults age 65 and over to get 2½ hours of cardiovascular exercise per week, and 2 days/week of strength training. Start small! Take 10 minute chunks of time during your day, and work up to a 30-minute workout. Taking the stairs is a good way to get started! • “Stay Hydrated!” - Proper hydration improves the quality of your workout and reduces fatigue and recovery time. They are excited to announce they are now offering implant retained dentures. No other denturist in the area offers this service! Their patients are very happy with their service. A testimony from one recent patient: “I am so happy to be able to share with you my experience with Mayo Denture Center. In fact, it is an answer to my prayers because I want other denture wearers to find the total satisfaction that I am enjoying since getting my new dentures from Kismet and Chris. I am 85 years old and have had

They were there to meet my needs and in no way influence my decision… Never in my 40 years of wearing dentures have I ever encountered such professionalism, attention to details, personal caring and skill. Words cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am and if I were to die tomorrow, it would still have been one of the best decisions of my life.” - Marion Ayer, Harbor.

For more information about the Cancer Program at St. Joseph Hospital, call (707) 269-4242 or (800) 4771922 or visit www.stjosepheureka.org. Submitted by St. Joseph Hospital

Giving Families More Reasons to

the-counter and prescription medications that can help along with a surgical option.

In 1999 the smoking rate in Del Norte County was 21.9 percent and as of 2008 (the most current data available) the smoking rate has declined to 16 percent. What this means is that since 1999 there are approximately 1,350 less people smoking in our community and just as important, hundreds of less people being exposed to second hand smoke.

Myth: Massage is a luxury. Fact: Massage is an extremely important part of your health care. Many people suffer from pain and discomfort for a variety of reasons: accident/job related injuries, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigues syndrome, pregnancy and stress, to name just a few. Evidence shows that massage helps alleviate pain, improve mobility, increase circulation, and helps a person to sleep better and helps alleviate tension due to the

stresses in life. Many health care providers recognize the benefits that massage therapy provides. Tracy Carlson has seven years of experience in medical massage therapy. Tracy has worked along with physicians and chiropractors providing pain relief and relief from discomforts of pregnancy. Call Tracy Carlson, CMT, today and dare to feel better.

Sandy's most important responsibility is to see that our residents continue to have excellent service and care at Sea View. He oversees the daily operations by assisting our managers in their jobs and also works with the state to meet or exceed regulatory expectations. He has an open door policy and meets with residents, staff and families on a regular basis.

Alice Lindley - Business Office Manager Alice works with the entire management team and staff to keep Sea View running smoothly and all of our records and files accurate. She is responsible for all business related activities including billing and accounts receivable, payroll and personnel files, and accounts payable. Be sure to ask Alice if you have any questions on your invoice.

Stacy Kreger, RN - Health Services Coordinator Stacy oversees and addresses all of the needs of our residents who live at Sea View, including both personal services and medical needs. Her responsibilities include ordering, storing and supervising the dispensing of medications and monitors our resident’s health, including conducting quarterly assessments. She welcomes your questions anytime.
