Video shares research on yoga’s effectiveness A growing body of evidence says yoga can help back pain. Studies on yoga for arthritis have shown mixed results. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, has released a video that features research on yoga, how yoga works, its safety and its effectiveness in treating certain health problems. The video, available at http://nccam.nih.gov/video/yoga, highlights the work of two yoga researchers. It says yoga is generally considered to be safe in healthy people when practiced appropriately under the guidance of a well-trained instructor. However, people with high blood pressure, glaucoma or sciatica, and women who are pregnant, should modify or avoid some yoga poses. Also, yoga postures should be modified based on individual abilities, and instructors need to know about any medical issues practitioners have. A 2 007 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey reported that 13 million American adults — 6 percent — practiced yoga in the previous year, and the number is on the rise as mind-body therapies are becoming increasingly integrated into the health care system. — WesCom News Service

Wine, cheese a good combo for health, too Consuming moderate amounts of wine and cheese may indicate that you’re on a path of good health, at least more so than if your diet includes much in the way of sweetened beverages and desserts. According to a recent study, people who drink wine and eat higher-fat foods such as meat and dairy are less likely to develop abdominal obesity — an indication of health risks — than people who eat foods high in calories but lower in nutritional value (junk food). The study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, followed 1,146 women for seven years. The women were between 25 and 77 at the beginning of the study and had no history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer or metabolic syndrome, which is a complex and unhealthy condition characterized by abdominal obesity, hypertension, elevated blood sugar and unhealthy blood lipid levels. Researchers explored the relationships among various dietary patterns, body fat distribution, smoking and metabolic syndrome. At the beginning of the study, women provided information about their food and
beverage consumption. Dietary patterns were categorized based on the women’s food habits. Participants were periodically tested for various disease risks, such as body weight, hypertension and blood lipids. Women whose diets were categorized into a “wine and moderate eating” group consumed comparably more wine, organ meats, eggs and high-fat dairy products than other groups. The group categorized as having a “higher fat” dietary pattern consumed a lot of animal fats, sweets, refined grains, soft margarine and oils. The “empty calorie” group consumed notably higher amounts of sweetened beverages and desserts than the others. In comparing various health benchmarks, researchers found that the “wine and moderate eating” and the “higher fat” clusters of participants had lower odds of abdominal obesity compared with the “empty calorie” cluster. Previous studies, according to the authors, have associated higher dairy and cheese in-
take — low-fat and high-fat products — with lower amounts of abdominal obesity. Dr. Ruth Kimokoti, an author of the study, said the mechanism by which higher-fat diets reduce the risk of abdominal obesity is not clear. Dairy foods and meats were key foods in the “wine and moderate eating” and “higher fat” patterns, but that doesn’t suggest that cheese and meat are responsible for less abdominal fat. “Their effect on abdominal obesity needs to be considered in the context of the overall diet. They may interact with other foods or, conversely, other foods may counteract the effects of meats and high-fat dairy foods,” she said. As for the wine, she suggested, “Alcohol reduces the inflammation that is associated with obesity. Phytochemicals in wine may likewise reduce the size of fat cells.” “This is indeed an interesting and somewhat provocative paper,” said Shelley McGuire, an associate professor of nutrition at Washington State University and national
spokeswoman for the American Society for Nutrition, in reference to the study. It was an epidemiologic study, she emphasized, which means one can’t conclude that high fat diets prevent abdominal obesity. A controlled intervention study would be required to make such a statement. On that same note, the study cannot make any definitive conclusions about alcohol and its relation to health. (However, McGuire said, quite a few studies suggest that moderate alcohol consumption is beneficial in terms of factors involved with heart disease and metabolic disorders, such as Type 2 diabetes.) As for wine, she said, the authors didn’t set out to look at alcohol. It just turned out that people who drank alcohol and consumed high-cholesterol foods such as eggs and organ meats tended to share common dietary patterns, McGuire said. They happened to drink very little in the way of sweetened beverages, too. – WesCom News Service

One of the characteristics of a home is how the “family members” treat one another. Care & loving attitude are an integral part of life at Ocean Park & are displayed continually by the staff. My son-in-law, who is a surgeon, visited & was immediately impressed by the staff's knowledge of the personal needs & interests of those they were caring for. Physicians recommend special help for obesity A new study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health said doctors aren’t the best source for weight-related counseling. Researchers surveyed 500 general practitioners, family practitioners and general internists and found only 44 percent of primary care physicians reported success in helping obese patients lose weight. The physicians identified nutritionists and dietitians as the most qualified health care providers to help obese patients. Primary care physicians with fewer than 20 years since completion of medical school were more likely to identify lack of information about good eating habits and lack of access to healthy food as important causes of obesity. “There are few differences in primary care physician perspectives about the causes of obesity or solutions to improve care, regardless of when they completed medical school, suggesting that obesity-related medical education has changed little over time,” said Sara Bleich, the lead author of the study, in a news release. But “physicians who completed medical school more recently reported feeling more successful helping obese patients lose weight.” — WesCom Wire Service

Sugar, carbs may increase risk of cognitive impairment mal age-related changes. Those who reported the highest carbohydrate intake at the beginning of the study were 1.9 times likelier to develop mild cognitive impairment than those with the lowest intake of carbohydrates. Participants with the highest sugar intake were 1.5 times likelier to experience mild cognitive impairment than those with the lowest levels. Those whose diets were highest in fat, compared to the lowest, were 42 percent less likely to face cognitive impairment. Those who had the highest intake of protein had a reduced risk of 21 percent. Older people who consume a diet high in carbohydrates and sugar may have a higher risk of cognitive impairment, according to a study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s disease. Mayo Clinic researchers tracked 1,230 people between 70 and 89 years of age who described what they ate and whose cognitive function was evaluated by physicians, nurses and neuropsychologists. About 940 of them who showed no signs of cognitive impairment were asked to return for follow-up evaluations. About four years into the study, 200 of those 940 were showing mild cognitive impairment — problems with memory, language, thinking and judgment greater than nor-

Gonna eat that? Apps tell how much you’ll have to sweat If I were to order the chicken alfredo for dinner at the Olive Garden — 1,440 calories and 82 grams of fat — and I wanted to burn it off, I’d have to jog for 132 minutes (for me, that’s farther than a half-marathon), or swim for 185 minutes (I would rather starve than swim for three hours), or walk for 330 minutes (I must point out that would take 5½ hours). These exercise conversions come from the AltheteInMe.com website and its associated smartphone app. After entering your body weight, the program calculates how many minutes of exercise are needed to burn off the calories in specific menu items from dozens of franchise restaurants as well as hundreds of other food items. It’s an alternative way to consider the caloric content of food. It’s an incentive to skip the alfredo or the steak and instead choose Subway’s Veggie Delite on wheat, hold the cheese (which equals 31 minutes of biking, 20 minutes of jogging, 28 minutes of swimming or a 50-minute walk). The idea behind it, its creator said, is to encourage people to make healthier menu choices and to motivate them to exercise. Thousands of websites and mobile apps are available to help the conscientious eater track calories, said Stan Reents, the president and CEO of AthleteInMe.com, based in Phoenix.
“I wanted to create something different. The whole point is to get people moving,” he said. “A lot of people count calories, but no one has any perspective on how to relate calories to minutes of exercise. When you give people that information, their jaws drop. It tends to have a bigger impact on them,” he said. The concept was boosted by a study that said providing the physical activity equivalent — such as minutes of jogging — for sugar-sweetened beverages reduced the consumption of such drinks. The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health in December 2011, suggested the physical activity equivalent was a more effective way to encourage healthy lifestyle choices than just posting the calorie content of various foods. Researchers from the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University posted the caloric information of sugar-sweetened beverages in three different ways near their point of sale: 1) A basic calorie count, 2) the percent of total recommended daily intake or 3) the activity equivalent (“Did you know that working off a bottle of soda or fruit juice takes about 50 minutes of running?”). Researchers found when the physical equivalent was posted, beverage sales dropped. They concluded the physical activity equivalent may have the greatest effect on food selection. Reents, who has an education and work ex-
perience in clinical pharmacy and an interest in fitness, said he came up with the exercise calculations for AthleteInMe.com by averaging data about expended calories from exercise from at least six physiology textbooks. This provides an average, but not an exact number of minutes of exercise needed for any individual, he admits. No two people burn calories the same. The rate at which an individual burns calories depends on many factors, including their body type and their effort expended. The website and app, for example, don’t say whether you should run fast or jog slow for some number of minutes to burn off a burger. Reents used an average between the fast and the slow paces for various exercises. The system’s other weakness that Reents noted was that, so far, the database mostly includes exercise equivalents for restaurant items — not many grocery items. He obtained the calorie content of menu items from chain restaurants, which must disclose the calories of their food. He is building up his database, he said, and adding more groceries. The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides an online nutrient database from which Reents — or anyone — can acquire the calories for, say, a banana, a tablespoon of peanut butter,
a slice of bread or a cup of milk. Reents noted that his system did offer a unique category: beer. “It might be kind of humorous, but people need to realize that alcohol is a high source of calories,” he said. I had already discovered this section. The list doesn’t appear to include local microbrews, so it was hard to find the ones I drink. But I’ve been known to enjoy a Tecate (146 calories) on a hot summer day, which equals 21 minutes of biking, or 13 minutes of running, or 19 minutes of swimming or a 34 minute-walk. In the winter, when a Guinness Extra Stout is more appealing, I’m going to have to work harder. To burn off that 176 calories, I’d have to bike 26 minutes, or jog 16 minutes, or swim 22 minutes or walk for 40 minutes. And that’s before eating a chicken alfredo. “Dieting (calorie restriction) is clearly important for success,” Reents said in an email. “My app may help with calorie restriction by causing people to make different choices. However, it hopefully motivates people to exercise, which is way more important. Dieting does absolutely nothing for aerobic fitness, bone density, or brain health, all important health issues for everyone as they get older.”

Health law saves seniors cash Health law saves seniors $4.8 billion. Elements of the Affordable Care Act intended to ease the costs of prescription drug coverage have saved $4.8 billion for consumers so far since the law’s enactment, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently announced. The money has been saved by the nation’s roughly 5.6 million Medicare beneficiaries, who are seniors and people with disabilities. Health and Human Services data shows that in Oregon, 26,150 people saved roughly $52.2 million. The health care law created savings by
tackling what has been called the “doughnut hole,” which is a gap in what Medicare will pay for prescription drugs. For example, in 2010, beneficiaries who hit a $2,800 limit got stuck in the gap until reaching the maximum annual out-of-pocket spending limit at about $4,500. The law attempts to mitigate the doughnut hole: The agency says in 2010, anyone who hit it received a $250 rebate. In 2011, discounts on certain drugs were provided. For 2013, other savings are in place for people who hit the doughnut hole. — WesCom News Serivce
Yo-yo dieting can hurt the heart Yo-yo dieting can hurt the heart For women who are postmenopausal and overweight, losing weight is optimal only if they can keep it off. Regaining lost weight may increase risk for heart disease, according to Wake Forest University researchers. The researchers studied factors that indicate a person’s risk for Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, including blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar and insulin, before and after a fivemonth weight loss intervention, and again at six and 12 months after the intervention. The study of more than 100 wom-
en, published online in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, said even partial weight regain following intentional weight loss is associated with increased risk for Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. When women regained weight a year after losing it — when they regained about 70 percent of what they had lost — several risk factors were actually worse than before they lost weight in the first place. The take-home message from the study was that slow and steady weight loss should be done via permanent lifestyle changes, and that yo-yo dieting is harmful. w

Reality salt check: Processed foods Most Americans consume too much sodium, according to a recent FDA Consumer Update, and excess sodium contributes to high blood pressure, a leading cause of heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. But it’s not really the salt shaker that people need to worry about. “Approximately 75 percent of the total sodium intake for most individuals comes not from people adding salt to their food but from packaged and restaurant foods,” said Michael Taylor, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for foods, in a written statement. The Consumer Update advises consumers to limit these foods, which are typically the highest sources of sodium: • Breads and rolls; • Luncheon meat, such as deli ham or turkey; • Pizza; • Poultry, processed as well as fresh, which is often injected with a sodium solution; • Soups; • Cheeseburgers and many types of sandwiches; • Cheese, natural and processed; • Pasta dishes; • Meat dishes, such as meatloaf with gravy; and • Savory snacks such as chips, pretzels and popcorn. On average, Americans consume about 3,300 milligrams of sodium every day. Dietary guidelines recommend no more than 2,300 milligrams daily. For those 51 and older, and people of any age who are African-American or have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease, sodium intake should be capped at 1,500 milligrams daily. — WesCom News Service
