Weather we do or Weather we don’t... Scott Graves Managing Editor Curry Coastal Pilot Don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes... Winters along the Southern Oregon Coast can be a study in constant contrasts, with weather changing from wet and wild to sunny and warm within a few short hours on any given day. Of course there are times when the rain seems to fall for weeks on end, especially in November and December, but that is often followed by weeks of sunny, balmy days in January and February that rival those of Southern California. There’s a reason why the coast around Brookings and Harbor is often referred to as the “Banana Belt” of Oregon. It’s a nickname based on the area’s year-round mild weather, with highs in the summer rarely surpassing 90
degrees and winter lows barely hitting the freezing point. The average annual maximum temperature is 68 degrees (in August). The annual minimum temperature is 41 degrees (in January). The average annual precipitation is 73.45 inches, with most of that falling between November and March. Snowfall is minimal — 2.3 inches per year in the coastal mountains, and nearly nonexistent along the coast. A state climatologist once offered the following explanation: “Brookings has a typical maritime climate caused by the ocean and the general eastward movement of the upper level airflow.”
The copious amounts of winter rainfall, he explained, are the result of the southward displacement of the main jet stream, which can bring warm,

moist storms from the central Pacific or water-laden cold fronts from the northern sea. The peculiarities of the climate around Brookings may result from the northwest-southeast orientation of the coastline for about 10 miles — from the border with California to the north, and from the rapid inland increase in elevation. For gardeners, winter can bring an average of seven days when low temperatures plummet below the freezing mark. The average minimum temperature is 29 degrees, with the lowest temperature recorded in Brookings at 17 degrees. A frost, or even a dusting of snow, is most likely to happen from December through February, with a slight chance as early as late October and as late as midMay. When it comes to rainfall, a
majority of it — about 13 inches — falls in December. Weather records show there are typically about 18 rainy days in that month, with as many as 28 rainy days recorded. In recent years, as much as 4 to 5 inches of rain have fallen in a given 24-hour period. Suffice it to say, the Southern Oregon Coast weather, on any given fall or winter day, can catch locals and visitors off guard, spurring them to throw on heavy rain jackets or shed clothes down to single layers. One day they are stoking the fireplaces to keep warm, the next they are opening the windows to let the warm sea air inside. To stay on guard, people can easily obtain updates on local and regional weather at the Pilot’s weather station at www. currypilot.com.

Cleaning the gutters is not the job anyone looks forward to, but it’s one of the most important fall jobs you can do for your home. If gutters are not cleaned and maintained, water can build up next to your home and cause rot on wooden surfaces, pull gutters off from the weight, and potentially ruin your roof.
Although there are all kinds of tools you can use these days, like a shop vacuum, extension poles or even robots, the simplest and most efficient way is still by hand. All you need are work gloves, a ladder and a trash bag or compost bucket. You might also want a trowel if you don’t want to use your hands.
Ladder safety is the most important part of this cleaning job, so make sure the surface you place the ladder on is level and someone is there to hold it at the bottom. Also, be sure there is a stand-off for your ladder to keep it from damaging your gutters during the cleaning process. Once you scoop the debris out, take the garden hose set at highest pressure and wash down toward gutters the
downspout. You might want to take an auger to the downspouts to make sure they are not blocked. If your roof is under trees you may need to do this a couple of times a year and might
want to consider installing leaf guards over the gutters. A small amount of effort to clean the gutters can save you

Step 1 : Declare Your Space Nothing can be started, finished or enjoyed if you haven’t marked your territory. This is also known as “asking for permission, and must be done if you don’t already have a designated area like the garage, outbuilding, camping tent or a dog house that you are simply repurposing. Step 2 : Pick a Theme Decide on a theme for your man cave that is inspired by your personality and interests. For example, if you’re a big Baywatch fan, you can fill all those empty spaces with all your Baywatch paraphernalia. Step 3 : Paint Painting the walls of your new man cave can transform the look and feel of the space quickly and affordably. Choose wisely, for this is probably the ONLY time that YOU get to choose the color of ANY painting project (inside or out). So be fully aware that in the end there will no one but yourself to blame, that
and your newly acquired “I’m color blind excuse.
Step 4 : Accessorize Chances are that you still have your little league Tee-ball trophies from 1978, or that collection of famous peoples hair clippings you collected which you have been secretly saving all these years for precisely this very moment. Well, now’s your chance. If not, you can always accessorize the walls of your space inexpensively by buying some posters, pictures or collectibles from online retailers such as eBay or Amazon — like everybody else does. Step 5 : Attain the crown jewel. Shop around for bargains before buying your man cave’s centerpiece... THE flat-screen television. Although an 80-inch display might break your budget, a 50-inch or 55inch screen offers savings potential and can be seen as a compromise and/or stepping stone to your ultimate goal... that 75 UHD 4k back lit LED Smart TV you aren’t finding at any ‘thrift store’.
Step 6 : Furnish Again, keeping the budget down can only be a good thing and small sacrifices must be made. Consider furnishing your man cave with second-hand rather than new furniture. “Suggest that it may be time to get a new couch for the living room and then “offer to “store the old one in YOUR space to get it “out of the way. Or check garage sales in your neighborhood and online at the Curry Coastal Pilots new online classified section “The Pilot Promoter, a FaceBook site where the classified section of the Curry Coastal Pilot is posted and is chock full of local bargains. Step 7 : Snackerizing You will require the use of a refrigerator in your man cave, and you will need to select one that’s large enough to contain enough food and beverages in the case of a “lockdown or more likely a “lockout event. Again, by utilizing the new online classified section “The Pilot Promoter on FaceBook, you can yield additional savings by buying a used model. Step 8 : The snackBar Put a snackBar in your man

cave on the cheap, after all, you will need a place to prepare your ‘beverages’ and store large quantities of bulk dry food goods — (see snackerizing above). Step 9: Gaming If you want to put gaming systems or a pool table, foosball, or ping-pong table in your man cave, shop around for used ones. Remember, keeping the costs down keeps you under the radar. So utilize your local secondhand stores, garage sales and classified ad websites like the new online classified section “The Pilot Promoter on FaceBook. Step 10 : Enjoy That’s right, I said enjoy. This is the part when you sit down in YOUR spot and get ready to enjoy the game AND a Baywatch marathon at the same time. This is the part when you go to your snackBar to get a “beverage and some bulk snack foods, and realize that you forgot to stock up on some plates, bowls, silverware, and mugs. Yes, this is the part when you sneak back into domesticated living and steal these things to stock up your space until somebody yells out “where are all the glasses and forks going!

Fall Is A Great Time to Garden
2015 – Home Show – Page 7
As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, we know fall is upon us. This happens to be one of the best time to plant new plants. It also means that our vegetable garden will need some change outs of crops and our perennials will begin there march toward winter. It sounds like a lot of work but it really isn’t, especially for a gardener. It can be an exciting time for all of us that enjoy being outside as much as possible. Beautiful days and nights that are beginning to get a bit chilly makes for ideal conditions. Introducing new plants this time of the year allows the plants to get settled in during the winter months and develop a strong root system. The winter rains will keep them watered sometimes well into April. Since they have set nice roots, once the hint of spring ar-

rives they will take off and grow a bit better since they have the root system to support the growth: Evergreen and deciduous plants both will benefit in the same way. This time of year is also a great time to clean up the vegetable garden from the spring and summer crops. I find that this is a good time to add new organic compost and a good organic fertilizer. It is easy to work them in so that the nutrients are down in the root zone and readily available for any new plants. There are many vegetables that can be grown during the colder time of year.
Consider Broccoli, Swiss Chard, (Bright Lights is my favorite Lettuces, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Parsley and Peas. Consider adding Garlic and Rosemary alongside your veggies since they are good insect repellents. Herbs are great as well in winter such as Oregano, Thymes and Sage. Very easy crops that will do well here. The fall season is a great time to get your lawns in shape so that in spring it will be green and lush. This is the time to aerate and de-thatch to allow the oxygen to get down to the root zone. Once you have done this follow up with lime to sweeten the soil to reduce acidity and that will also help you with any moss problems you may be experiencing. Re-seeding should be done at this time and for the grand finale top dress the new seed with a good organic mulch. If your lawn is
already in good shape then all you should be doing is applying a good slow release lawn food and call it good. I realize that in this drought many frown on lawns but using the right grass mix such as Tall Fescue can be of great help. Fescue uses much less water and makes a beautiful lawn as well as hardy for foot traffic, weeds have a tough time taking hold and it is very deep rooted for drought tolerance. A nice lawn really sets off the rest of the landscape. Perennials will soon need a little work. This

is a good time to remove any spent flower heads (deadheading) but also a good time to thin out if spreading into other plants. Many perennials have lots of life left so deadheading and general cleanup will help them continue a bit longer. It would not hurt to add a good organic fertilizer that will be used a bit now and will have some ready to take up in spring as the soil temperatures slowly rise. Do not use too much nitrogen since you do not want to push too much new growth this late in the season.

From Chaos to Calm Our lives these days are busier than ever. We spend more time in our offices or on the road than we do in our own homes. Our lives have become so fast paced and frenzied that we really need to make a concerted effort to slow down. For many of us this no longer comes naturally and we must force ourselves to relax – to really stop and smell the roses. A home that is disorganized and chaotic is not a relaxed one. There are a few simple and very basic steps that we can do to make our homes more inviting and peaceful at the end of a busy day. One can easily set the tone for a calm and relaxing home by taking a few simple steps. Lighting is very important, and natural
sunlight does wonders to one’s spirit. Don’t block a room’s natural sunlight. Be sure to keep shades pulled up and curtains and drapes pulled off to the sides. Even when the sun is not out, daylight’s natural light is best. The paint colors you choose in your home can have a profound effect on your mood. Keep bright and jarring colors out of furniture and fabrics in the areas you wish to keep calm. Bright colors tend to energize, and our goal is to create the opposite effect. Remove clutter. Clutter is distracting and immediately instills a sense of chaos and disorderliness. The idea here is to create a space that looks and feels softer,

calmer and more relaxing. Layering soft textures can create this effect as can fireplaces. The bedroom is THE place we go for ultimate calm and relaxation. Therefore it is really important to remove all clutter, particularly on your bedside tables and your dressers. Put away any clothes that are left out or that are hanging from doors or behind doors. Try not to leave the house without making your bed. Consider a new mattress. Purchase sheets with a high thread content. The higher the thread content, the softer the sheet. Place a basket next to your bed or end table where you can toss all remote controls, cell phones and electronic tablets.
B Barron’s
Consider your wall color. Softer colors can help create a relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom. Keep windows unobstructed to let in natural sunlight when you want it, but be sure that you can pull a window covering that can block out the outdoor light that can keep you from a deep sleep. Place lights on dimmers if possible. In the living room, consider your furniture placement. Where’s the focal point? Is it a fireplace? A large bay window? Place furniture grouped together where you can have a relaxing and comfortable setting. Again, consider colors that are natural or white. Don’t be afraid to toss a few extra pillows onto the couch,

and keep blankets nearby organized in a basket or furniture that can double as storage. As you see, many ideas are repetitive, even in different rooms. This just serves to illustrate that a few simple steps can go a long way in making your home more relaxing. Also, keep in mind that
local furniture stores are happy to help you with ideas and the furniture or fixtures that can help make your living spaces more organized and relaxing. Bottom line...Surround yourself with the things that are important to you, but keep clutter to a minimum.

How to Winterize Your Lawn Equipment Have you winterized your outdoor power equipment? Taking a few simple steps before storing your gas-powered tools for the winter will ensure a hassle-free start next spring. It will also extend the life of
your small gasoline engines. Your outdoor power equipment will last for many years with some basic maintenance and care. As you get your equipment ready for storage, it is also a good time to take a
few extra preventive maintenance steps. But whatever your plans full tune up or just washing the dirt off remember... The most important step is draining or stabilizing the fuel Gasoline left in fuel tanks over the winter will degrade leaving gum deposits and varnish build-up that will plug up the fuel system. You can either drain the fuel system or use a fuel stabilizer. Use a stabilizer in your mower and drain fuel from tools with two-cycle engines string trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers and chain saws. Fuel stabilizers will keep the gas fresh until spring. They can be found at most hardware and home stores.
After adding the stabilizer, run the engine for at least 5 minutes to be sure the stabilizer gets into the carburetor. To drain the fuel system, first pour the gasoline out of the tank into a gas can. Then pump the primer bubble several times, start the engine and let it run until the remaining fuel in the carburetor and lines is used up. Add fuel stabilizer to a full gas tank and run the engine a couple of minutes. Then fill up the tank. A full tank prevents water condensation from getting in tank and keeps gaskets from drying. Remove and sharpen the blade Clean the mower deck. The caked-on grass clippings and

Fall Back for Safety Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are essential safety equipment for any home. Smoke Detectors sound an alarm when they sense the presence of smoke particles. Most local fire safety regulations require installation of functioning smoke alarms on every level of all homes and buildings. Carbon Monoxide detectors alert you to toxic levels of an invisible and odorless gas that can cause serious health problems. Together, these two devices provide significant and cost-effective protection for your home and family. When installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home, it’s important to understand the capabilities and benefits of different alarm types. There are two types of home smoke alarms, distinguished by their sensor designs. Ionization smoke alarms –In this design, electrodes continually conduct a low-level electrical current through ionized air. Smoke particles that enter the
ionized air disrupt this current, triggering the alarm. Ionization smoke sensors may detect smaller, less visible fire particles, such as those produced by flaming fires, sooner than photoelectric sensors. Photoelectric smoke alarms

Many of these deaths were known to have occurred during power outages due to severe weather. When selecting carbon monoxide alarms, there are two basic options to consider: Standard carbon monoxide alarms –These alarms include sensors that trigger an alarm when carbon monoxide gas reaches unsafe levels. Combination carbon monoxide and smoke alarms –For an allin-one solution, look for a unit with both carbon monoxide and smoke sensors. Like standard smoke alarms, these models use either ionization or photoelectric sensors. Every home should have working carbon monoxide alarms as well as smoke alarms. Installation requirements vary by region. For specific regulations in your area, contact local fire safety authorities.

Consider symmetry
A sense of balance is an important part of any design. Use symmetry in rooms by placing matching items in it on opposite sides of the space, or by using the same scale art on opposing walls of a room.

Before selecting accessories, decide on your color scheme. Choose one or two colors for your accessories that will add interest and coordinate with your furniture and wall color.
Accessories are a great way to play up the theme of a room. The key is to keep your theme in mind to achieve a cohesive look.

When grouping multiple objects together, vary their size and height. Mixing size and height adds visual interest to your design. Use odd numbers when placing accessories in a group.
Lighting is an easy way to add instant impact. Choose light fixtures that complement the design style of your room. Light fixtures are also a great way to add color where you need it most.

Setting the Mood
Lighting is a very important aspect when designing the perfect interiors. The lights you use play a large role in defining the mood of a room or a space. There are many interesting lighting
products available in the market, but natural lighting is by far the best. Infusing the maximum amount of natural light into any room can be achieved by introducing large windows and
skylights if the design permits. An individuals mood is definitely affected by the lighting in a room. Higher levels of light make people more active, whereas lower levels will re-
lax most individuals. This is why the interiors of a spa are always dimly lit with a soft yellow light or why nightclubs feature ultra-violet lights and why offices have bright tube-lights. Keeping this in mind, there are three basic types of lighting: a. Ambient lighting is a general illumination that comes from all directions in a room that has no visible source. This type of lighting is in stark contrast to accent lighting. b. Accent lighting creates highlights and can be used to focus on particular architectural or decor features in the room like a work or art, a showcase, or a book shelf. c. Task lighting is specifically designed to provide strong localised light for specific tasks, such as cooking, reading, etc. First, define the purpose of the space to be lit. You will then be able to decide the lighting scheme

for a particular room. You can either opt for one of the above or a blend of two or even all three. Today there are a large variety of lights to brighten up the interiors of a room. Most prominent among the variety available in the market CFLs or Compact Fluorescent Lamps, fluorescent lights like the tubelight, halogen lamps
and new age LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes, which are gaining popularity as they use less power and have a comparatively longer shelf life. It all depends on your choice and the activities the room will be used for. If you are opting for a blend, remember, balance is the key. Do not let one type overshadow the other.

Like it or not… Winter’s Coming heavy use seasons (winter and summer). You should replace disposable fiberglass filters, and wash electrostatic or electronic filters, at least every three months, and more often if they look dirty. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool (a waste of energy). A clean filter will keep dirt and dust out of your system, increasing its longevity and reducing the need for expensive repairs. DO…Check your thermostat programming to make sure it reflects your family’s current schedule. This will help you reduce energy costs. DO…Check your chimney to make sure there are no cracks or loose bricks. DO…Remove window AC units, and cover outside AC units to min-
imize damage from winter weather and debris (you can buy a cover at your local hardware store). DO…Install a carbon monoxide detector next to your sleeping area. DON’T…Try to service your heating system on your own. Leave it to qualified professionals! DON’T…Wait for the first cold night to turn on your furnace for the first time. Test your heater for
a few minutes while it’s still warm out (like in early September), to make sure that it’s working well on the first cold day. DON’T…Try to turn on the heat while the thermostat is still set in AC mode. Just setting the dial above room temperature won’t activate the heat if the system is still in AC mode. DON’T…Cover outside AC units with plastic. Plastic traps moisture and can lead to rust and deterioration. Instead, use a cover specifically designed for outdoor AC units. DON’T…Assume that because you have a carbon monoxide detector, you don’t need to schedule a furnace inspection. A carbon monoxide detector should be a second line of defense, not a substitute for annual service.

point. Sealing every year can actually lead to problems, including seal-coat peeling and cracking. However, letting your driveway go unsealed for five years might also be excessive, especially if it has turned gray and is developing small cracks. There is some controversy about how often an asphalt (blacktop) driveway should be sealed, but every three years appears to strike a good balance. When an asphalt driveway turns gray, it indicates oxidation of the asphalt and weathering by sun and rain. The small cracks are another sign that the asphalt is having problems. If they are larger than hairline, fill them with top-quality crack filler before sealing. Avoid cheap products — they won’t last more than a year or so. Dealers sell professional-grade fillers that cost more, but usually last a lot longer. Hairline cracks can be filled by the sealer; many sealers contain sand-like filler material that will close them. Before sealing, clean the driveway as thoroughly as possible. Finally, whether you seal the driveway or hire a pro, make sure a topquality sealer is used.

Sealcoating helps protect asphalt from the harmful effects of the weather as well as petroleum based products like gasoline and oil. Asphalt and paving experts recommend applying a seal coat every few years to maintain an even coverage. Seal coat wears off over time from vehicles driving on the surface, wind, rain and exposure to the sun. Many driveways are constructed with asphalt material. Over time with exposure to mother nature and everyday use, asphalt can develop cracks and holes. It is very important to repair any cracks or holes as soon as possible to reduce the possibility of them becoming larger and potentially dangerous to you and your vehicle. Repairing these asphalt problems is quite easy to do and, with the right tools and materials, should take just an afternoon to complete. Be sure to check the weather forecast before you begin your repair project. You will need a day of warm, dry weather to achieve optimal bond results from your repair compound. Most driveway experts agree that sealing every year is excessive. Even many sealing professionals and sealcoat manufacturers agree on that
