Homes come with dreams, chores By Charles Kocher
Home ownership is one of those basic American dreams. As in Oregon and Curry County, about twothirds of the homes in Brookings-Harbor are owner-occupied. And as those owners know, with that dream and the deed comes a never-ending list of opportunities and chores. From cleaning to remodeling, from utilities to decorating, all of us with a home have lots and lots of choices. This new special section in the Curry Coastal Pilot is dedicated
to helping homeowners find ideas and solutions to all those choices and chores. Joining us in this section are dozens of businesses who want homeowners to know more about their goods and services. In these pages you will find lots of advice, lots of solutions and lots of ideas to help homeowners reach those dreams. Best of all, we plan to offer this special section twice a year, because as every homeowner knows, there are two seasons to the chores and opportunities. This spring section is timed with the annual BrookingsHarbor Home and Garden Show. The home show is a longstanding tradition in Brookings, organized 25 years ago by Coos-
Curry Electric Cooperative and later assumed by the BrookingsHarbor Chamber of Commerce. Yes, the home show is “later in the spring this year and, yes, it’s at a new location. See more information about that on Page 11, and then come down this weekend to join the fun. This year is an exception, but April is also the month when the fabled Brookings weather turns from wet to dry. That triggers all sorts of opportunities for gardening, landscaping changes, new construction, remodeling projects and repairs from driveways to roofs. This special section will be republished in the fall with new information aimed at the second season of home ownership.
In Brookings, fall is about getting ready for those five or six months when the rain totals can slosh up to 10 or 12 inches every month. That means getting prepared, from clean gutters to heating systems, from decorating for the holidays to planning for the next summer projects. After all, homeowners know that it’s a never-ending cycle of planning and projects. Whether you’ve had a home (or homes) for decades or you’re dreaming of getting a place of your own for the first time, we hope this special section helps you find solutions and opportunities for your home. Welcome One And All
Nothing says welcome home more than an inviting entrance. Take a step outside your front door. Does your entrance say welcome? Is the front door appealing? Is there a mat for people to wipe their shoes on? Is there a doorbell or doorknocker for people to let you know of their arrival? To find out just how welcoming your entrance is, pretend you are a visitor. What do you see? Take some photos. Things tend to look differently in photos. One of the easiest ways to dress up a home’s entrance is with paint. Could your front door use a new coat of paint?
How about your porch? Before you get the old paint cans out of the garage, consider if it is time for an update. Instead of black or brown, maybe you could try a bolder color for your front door. Red, blue or green can make a real statement and pull visitors’ eyes immediately to your front door. Add some new hardware to your door and a new coat of paint on the porch floor, and your entrance will really pop. Lighting is a must in any entrance. Is your entrance well lit? If not, perhaps it’s time to add some lights, or at the very least, replace the ones you
have. Exterior lighting comes in a wide range of styles and finishes. Brighter, more energyefficient lighting will do wonders for your entrance and your pocketbook. Accessories are another good way to dress up an entrance. A welcome mat is a must to keep dirt out of the home. A wreath will help dress up any space, as will statuary and plants. Depending upon how large of a space you have, you might even be able to add some furniture. A bench works great for visitors needing someplace to rest their bags while they wait for you to answer the door.
2015 – Home Show – Page 3
If you have a path leading up to your front door, you might want to examine that area too. Is there anything you can do to add interest, such as installing lighting or planting some flowers. Anything you can do to dress up the walkway will add to the welcoming feel of your home. There are hundreds of things you can do to make the entrance of your home more welcoming, and they don’t have to cost you a bundle. A new wreath or doormat can really perk up the space. For further ideas, browse online or consult a professional.

Springtime in the Garden Center By Jerry Holcomb Just what we gardeners have been waiting for! The garden centers’ lush display of bedding plants -- flowers, vegetables, trees, shrubs, and succulents. We want one of each! How to choose? OK, before you blow next months budget, here’s the strategy. First off, where are you going to put (as in plant) all those beauties? If you’re like me (and most gardeners) you’ll try to cram
five acres of plants onto a 60 foot lot. Sure, they’ll fit. If you plant each an inch apart! Instead, take a long look at your landscape before you hit the nursery. Where do you want all-summer color? Or maybe changing, but continuous color?  How can areas where bulbs have finished their show glow all summer? What will brighten the entry way? Or the patio? Or that special shade area? What’s your color scheme? You get the idea. Go to the garden center with plan in hand. And stick to it. Well, maybe just that one or two

little deviations.... So what might you find? Bedding plants. Annuals are summer’s workhorses. Need a filler in the garden? Call on an annual. Need some color? Call an annual. Need height? Low growers? Spiky? Blowzy? Contrast? Blenders? Annuals can fill all these roles and more. Cosmos, snapdragons, poppies, impatiens, marigolds, nemesia, and verbena are a few examples of annuals that usually get off to a roaring start and keep going all summer. You’ll find them and much more at this year’s garden centers. Petunias, annual morning glory (ipomoea), and some others may sulk for a bit before putting forth much color. Once they get going, however, they bloom profusely. Godetia is just about my favorite fill in. Its upward facing blooms can provide a riot of color through Christmas and
beyond. The range of colors is spectacular; reds and pinks dabbed white, lavender with white center, and a beauty called “Salmon Princess. Most grow to about a foot and the more you pick, them the more they bloom. Larkspur comes in many colors, grows in spikes of blooms that keep coming until fall. We think of the old blues, but bright pink, white, lavender and others are newcomers. Petunias make splashy fillers. For quick color, plant two or three clumped together. Feed them extra well and keep spent blossoms cut off. When they bloom to the tip, cut off the stem at the base and a new one will grow. Snap dragons now show up in many configurations: doubles, singles, tall ones, short ones, but all assure summer-long beauty. And the colors are glorious!  Zinnias and asters are shy

bloomers in the coastal strip, but planted in a sun-all-day spot they will make a show. Marigolds can really heat up a garden bed with their wild orange and gold tones. Don’t just settle for the short ones, try a taller variety with big, bold pompom flowers in gold, lemon, orange, and vanilla. Don’t overlook the annual salvias, another plant that almost spans the color wheel. From deepest purple to reds, to pinkdipped white, blues, lavenders. And the foliage makes it worth growing them. Then there’s schizanthus.Â
These many-branched plants are awash in color that defies any jewel. Their blooms last and last and butterflies love them. Another dazzler, though not as easily found, is alstreomeria, sometimes called Peruvian lilies. You are probably most familiar with these beauties in florist’s bouquets. However, they are easily grown and quite undemanding once established. The flowers are azalea-like, and all are marked by contrasting blotches and flecks. They are available in shades ranging from red to pinks, purples, yel-

low, orange, peach, white and many combinations. There are two types of alstreomeria. The older ones, the litgu hybrids which are deciduous and grow taller and the evergreen types which stay in tidy clumps and grow only a foot to eighteen inches high. They are perennials. and will return for many seasons. Another choice perennial is agastache (also adored by hummers). It’s drought tolerant, although I find a little summer water improves the bloom. A. “Desert Sunriseâ€? is a spectacular plant that blooms all summer and late into fall. It grows to 30 inches, with loose spikes of flowers in shades of rose, pink, lavender so subtly blended you’ll think it’s a new color.Â
Others to love include, A. “Just Peachy, A. Tutti Frutti, and A. “Rupestris. Penstemon make a splash through summer. Try P. “Ruby Jewels, P. “Red Rocks, and that old one that everyone seems to have in a luscious rosy red. Also great hummingbird flowers. So make your trips to the garden centers informed ones. Buy summer color for your garden.w Pacific Coastal Gardening is Jerry Holcomb’s newest book. It’s mission is to offer practical information to those who garden in coastal climates. It’s loaded with color photos. Holcomb is happy to answer gardening questions. Call evenings, 541-469-3850, or email, jlholcomb27@gmail.com

How to choose a lawn tractor Everyone knows it’s important to use the right tool for the job, and choosing a lawn tractor is no different. Tractors can be very expensive, so you will want to make sure you find one within your budge and that will do the work you purchased it for. Lawn tractors can help cut down the time it takes to mow your lawn. A high-quality vehicle can assist you with a variety of tasks, making landscaping easier and even more enjoyable. Finding a good lawn tractor that is built to last will go a long way toward making your job less of a hassle.
THE RIGHT FIT Lawn tractors come in a variety of capabilities and price points. Most range from $1,000 for a simple, basic model to $8,000 or more for a fullyfeatured, commercial-grade tractor. In between, you will find a vast mixture of features and durability. You can select the right model by
asking yourself how you will use the lawn tractor. The size of your lawn is important, of course. Bigger lawns need a wider mowing deck. You should also consider other things you will do with your lawn tractor. High-end lawn tractors are more like pieces of farm equipment than traditional ride-on mowers. You can purchase accessories for them, such as baggers, trailers, powerful tillers and snowblowers. You are not only buying a lawn mower. These tractors are platforms that can be used for all kinds of jobs. So check on the accessories that come with each model, even if you don’t plan on purchasing them yet. You may appreciate the choices in the future.
SPEED, MANEUVERABILITY Most people want to finish the job in the least amount of time. While it is true that large mowing decks will cover more ground with each pass, there are other things to

consider as well. The transmission and speed is also a factor. How easy is it for you to change gears and turn in different directions? The zero-turn mower is another popular option. These vehicles can turn quickly and precisely to cut lawns of all sizes and shapes. While they have been used for years by commercial lawn crews, only recently have these mowers become affordable for the average homeowner. Zero-turn mowers are particularly useful when mowing close to homes, playground equipment and other tight areas.
DURABILITY The longevity of your lawn tractor is also an important consideration. The brand’s reputation should weigh heavily when you are making a decision. Research consumer reviews and talk to your friends and family members about the best brands of lawn products.
Z ERO -TURNS
Also, visiting a retail store and talking to knowledgeable salespeople will also help you. There are plenty of low-end, affordable riding mowers out there, but few have a reputation for durability. It is economical in the long run to choose a well-built model from a reputable manufacturer. Inspect the construction of each lawn mower careful to verify that it will meet your needs. While you probably don’t need the extreme engineering and high price of a commercial-grade model, you ought to buy the best model you can afford and follow the maintenance directions closely. It will help you get the most usage for your money. Finding a good dealer is an essential part of the process. When you locate an experienced local retailer with a long track record of happy customers, you will be well on your way to selecting the right lawn tractor for you.

This will gradually condition the lawn all year, leading to stronger grass that resists thatch and weeds and requires less fertilizer and water. Having a healthy lawn is one of the simplest ways to prevent weeds. Weed your lawn early before the weeds have a chance to seed-some weeds can produce 10,000 seeds each. With the ergonomic tools available on the market today, getting rid of weeds doesn’t have to be a back-breaking chore. A simple, easy-to-use weeder will get rid of dandelions and other broadleaf weeds. Weeding is easier to do when the soil is wet. Bare patches, caused either by disease or dog urine, are a blemish on your lawn. Repairing these patches in early spring while the weather is cooler will help the grass grow. Clear away the dead patches and sprinkle seed on the exposed soil, add fertilizer and keep the spot moist until the grass sprouts. Now is also a good time to fer-

tilize your lawn. If you detect moss, a combination moss killer and fertilizer is available. Once your soil is dry enough, you can dig in some compost. Turning it with a fork every few weeks will help the decomposition process. Eggshells and lawn clippings can be added to your compost pile, but if you have treated your lawn with chemicals to get rid of weeds or pests, don’t add the lawn clippings. Take a walk around your lawn and check the trees and shrubs for broken or damaged branches. Branches without collars should be trimmed close to the trunk. Those with collars should be trimmed at the collar edge.

The National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service has a Web site with information on how to control the problem. Winter can be hard on a lawn, but there are lots of things you can do to spruce it up once the weather starts to get warmer. You’ve gotten yourself, your vehicle and your home ready for spring. What’s next? How about your lawn? Once the weather starts to get warmer, there are a lot of little things you can do to spruce up your lawn. Here are a few things to get you started on your outdoor to-do list. Start by giving your lawn a light raking, taking care not to disturb any new grass plants. By raking, you will also get rid of the thatch (tangle of dried grass and weeds that intertwines with live grass) that has accumulated since the fall. The thatch needs to be removed if you are going to seed your lawn. If you aren’t, the grass seed will sit on the thatch and will not root into the soil. When raking, clear away any twigs or leaves that have accumulated over the winter. This is also a good time to check your lawn for pests and get rid of them before the problem gets worse. Over the year, soil can become compacted. By aerating, you will loosen the soil, which will let water, air and fertilizer get down into the roots of your grass. After you finish aerating

For most buyers, the first impression of your house won’t be
made in person. It will be made through photos of your home they see online or in print ads. That’s why it’s critical to have good, quality photographs of your home. In some markets, especially for high-end houses, that might mean having a professional

The most important step is to price your home correctly at the outset, and a good real estate agent can help you with that. Price it too low and you’ll leave money on the table. Price it too high, though, and your home will take longer to sell — or won’t sell at all — because savvy buyers won’t take it seriously. To hit the pricing bull’s eye, you’ve got to know what is comparable in your market. A good realtor will be able to pull data about recent comps, typically from the last six months, for sales of homes that are similar to yours. The closer your price is to homes that are actually selling, the more likely you are to get a quick sale.
2015 – Home Show – Page 9 photographer shoot images of your home when it’s staged at its best. For most homes, though, a good, thoughtful realtor or their assistant could do the job. The key is to find someone who knows enough about both photography and real estate to show your property in its best light, inside and out. The more clear, well-lit pictures that show off the beauty and features of your home, the more buyers are likely to take the next step and schedule a showing. THE REALTOR
Picking the right realtor is absolutely key to selling your house quickly. Not only should you feel good about them personally — knowing you can communicate well with them, trust them and feel good about them listing your home — but you should find an agent who will work their
hardest to market and sell your home quickly. Ask them about their background, how many similar homes to yours they have sold in recent years and what sets them apart as a realtor. You should also look for examples of the agent’s listings and make sure they’ll quickly add your home to the MLS with good photos and descriptions of your property. SPREAD THE WORD
While your real estate agent will take the lead in selling your house, there are also some steps you can do personally to help get the word out about your home. Let your friends, family and neighbors know that your home is on the market. You can share photos with your Facebook friends and do personal networking to help raise awareness about your home’s strong points that potential buyers might
enjoy. You never know where the buyer might come from, so spread the word far and wide. OPEN HOUSES
It’s a good idea to schedule some open houses to let potential buyers and local real estate agents tour your home. You should make your house look its best, obviously, but also take steps to make your house seem comfortable, cozy and homey when people arrive. Make sure the house smells good, perhaps by baking some fresh cookies or treats for visitors who walk in. FIX IT UP
Finally, you’ve got to pay attention to details to make sure your home is in tip-top shape cosmetically. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to spend a lot of money. A little paint and elbow grease can go a long way toward sprucing up most homes.
You’ll want to make sure the gardens, flower beds and other landscaping are neat, clean and free of weeds. You should also make a checklist of simple handyman tasks to complete, like replacing burned-out light bulbs, making sure doors and hinges shut properly and don’t squeak, and removing stains from your carpet. Your realtor will be able to help you figure out what needs to be done. They should have the experience and insight to see your home through the eyes of potential buyers, letting you know any steps you can take to improve your chances of a quick sale. In the end, selling a house quickly takes a lot of work and some specialized knowledge. But it’s made much easier when you find the right realtor and take some initiative to find your buyer as fast as possible.

How to Recognize Quality Furniture Whether you are revamping an outdated living room or moving into your first apartment, finding quality furnishings should be your top priority. Updating your home can be as simple as buying new furniture. It is a fantastic way to add elegance or flair to any room in your home. No matter which style you embrace, furniture can be divided into two categories: sturdy, long-lasting pieces; or cheap, flimsy furniture that will only last a few years. How can you tell the difference? If you are searching for high-quality pieces that are built to last, here are some aspects to consider.
Materials Wood furniture can last a lifetime, provided it is well-made. Some of the best furniture consists of kiln-dried wood. This process removes excess moisture left over after processing. Drying takes several months, but it
ensures the strength and durability of the wood. High-quality furniture is made of wood whose grain and color matches. Frames should be made of the same wood as the rest of the piece or quality hardwood like poplar. Maple, cherry and oak are some of the best wood for furniture. Pieces made of pine or plywood will be weaker and prone to breakage.
Construction Understanding how furniture is constructed will help you find the highest quality pieces. Joints that interlock are called dovetail joints. They are lined along the edges of drawers and other joints in the furniture. Dovetail joints have been in use for hundreds of years in furniture construction. Glue is the only material used to secure these joints. A tenon is a tongue cut into the joint’s short end. The space on the
joint’s long side where the tenon fits is called a mortise. Tenon joints and mortise are as widely used as dovetail joints and are just as strong. The tongue and groove joint is a form of mortise and tenon joint. The tongue runs along the entire length of the board. You can find a groove on the other side. The tongue locks into the groove creating a stable surface resistant to warping. Doweling consists of metal or pins and wood blocks which are used to secure joints between two separate wood pieces. While not as strong, doweling does provide adequate stability. Mitering holds furniture together with two pieces of adjoining wood. This material is cut at a 45-degree angle and then pieced together to create a 90-degree angle. The joint runs from the inside to the outside corner. You will see examples of mitering on a picture frame or mirror.
B Barron’s
Characteristics Large pieces like headboards and tabletops often have clear divisions. This characteristic is often quite common. Wood is hard to find in large pieces, so divisions are necessary to create the furniture. Feel the pieces with your fingertips. Quality furniture is well sanded and smooth, inside and out. All joints fit together perfectly. Hutches and dressers should have dust panels. Drawers open smoothly, with no sticking or squeaking. When closed, the drawers should sit flat against the surface of the dresser or cabinet. Understanding materials, construction and characteristics will help you find furniture that is built to last. If you are going through the effort to buy furniture, why not choose high-quality pieces? It will give you the best value for your money.

Home Maintenance Checklist For most people, buying a home may be the biggest single investment they ever make. As such, it’s an investment you’ll want to protect. Older homes especially, and new homes as well, need regular maintenance. Here is an annual checklist of areas that need to be inspected to keep your home in top condition. Exterior Maintenance • Gutters and downspouts need year-round attendance to make sure they are operating properly. • Window and door caulking should be secure. • Check the grade around the foundation. Don’t allow low areas to remain and collect water. Fill them immediately. • Watch for broken or missing roof shingles. Your roof is your home’s only defense against inclement weather. • The only sure way to stop a leak in a rooftop vent is to replace the flashing. • Chimney mortar that is crumbling or missing should be replaced. Holes in the mortar will allow water to seep in, causing further damage. Interior Maintenance • Keep the caulking around the tub and sink in good repair. If deteriorating, it could leak water into
substructures. • Bathroom flooring that is cracked or does not fit tightly against fixtures can allow water to seep through to the subfloor. A soft, spongy spot in the floor is an indication of water damage to the subfloor. • Check your basement for peeling paint on exterior walls. Does the basement smell musty? Are mold and mildew present on exterior walls? These are all indications of moisture in the basement. • Tub surrounds should have grout and tiles intact. • In the kitchen, again it is water that causes the most damage. Check around the edge of the sink where it meets the countertop. Next check where the countertop meets the backsplash. • Walls and ceilings are prone to mildew if not ventilated properly. • Electrical boxes should be in good repair at all times and free from rust. If you notice a rusty panel, call an electrician immediately and don’t touch it. It is a good idea to keep all the maintenance manuals for appliances. Protect your money by protecting your home. No matter how long you plan to live in the house, good repair will aid in appreciating its value.

Clutter Free Equals Cash Times are tough, and most people are looking for ways to make a little extra money. There are several ways to do this, but one way can net you some money and de-clutter your house all at the same time is to have a garage sale. You won’t be able to pay off your credit card debt with the proceeds, but it may give you a little extra cash in your pocket. The first thing to do is to decide what is going to be sold. Dive into the closets, basement and attic. You will need a certain level of commitment to the process, and if you are a packrat, you might consider another money-making venture. If you are committed to getting rid of some stuff, give yourself enough
time. Spend time going through and collecting things. Some people collect things all year for a garage sale. Plan ahead and don’t wait until the last minute to organize things. Pricing is your next step. First, you need to decide whether you want to get rid of things
or make money. If you price things too high, they won’t sell. It’s a balancing act, but one rule of thumb is to price items at a fourth of their original price. Make sure every item is marked with a price. This will help with haggling customers... it won’t prevent haggling, but it will help. Also, price things at quarter increments; the person making change will thank you. Consider your presentation. Make sure things are organized and clean. This includes the items for sale and the place where you are holding the sale. Put all similar items together, i.e., clothes, toys, etc. If you have a lot of one item (books or DVDs for example), put them in a box and mark the box $1 each.
The simpler and more attractive you make things, the easier they will sell. Like any good sale, advertising is important. The key is to be specific. List what you have that may interest people. However, keep an eye on your advertising budget. Don’t buy an expensive ad and cut into your profit margin. Be specific but concise. Put stuff out and they will come. Garage sales are an American tradition and there is a large group of people dedicated to them. Having a garage sale is not going to make you rich, but it can put a little extra money in your pocket, reduce clutter and be fun.

How to Choose Granite Countertops
EDUCATE YOURSELF Many people assume that because granite is one type of rock, all granite is made the same. This couldn’t be further from the truth. While all granite around the world is produced naturally from the same geologic processes, resulting in a variety of colors interspersed with quartz crystals, there is quite a wide variation in the material itself. The best way to learn about and select the best granite for your kitchen is to visit a local showroom in person. Choosing your granite purely from pictures in a catalog or from small samples could result in disappointment. Seeing the selection in person can
inform you about all the types of granite available and how they vary in color and mineral composition. IS IT ‘GRANITE?’ As the popularity of granite has skyrocketed in the past decade, so have the alternative products that are designed to have a granite-like look. In fact, the countertops you assumed were granite in a hotel or at a friend’s house could have actually been a man-made material. Some of these materials are designed to be less expensive or more durable than natural stone, but a good countertop company can help you understand the strengths and weaknesses of every type of material on the market. FITTING YOUR DESIGN One of the reasons granite is so popular is because it can complement the decor of any home. Depending on where it comes from, granite can range in color from black to white, and every shade of brown, blue and red can be found in granite slabs. There is also tremendous variation in the veining and crystal composition of each slab. While picking the right stone can be a matter of personal choice, there are some basic rules to follow. Just like with paint colors,
lighter stone colors can make a small room look bigger and more open. Likewise, dark colored granite can make a small kitchen feel even smaller. If your kitchen is big, roomy and well-lit, your choices are almost endless because any slab has the potential to look good in it. But for smaller, darker kitchens, your choices will be a bit more limited because dark countertops can make the space feel gloomy and hemmed-in. You should also look for a color that contrasts and pairs well with your cabinet materials. Depending on the look you’re aiming for, dark colored granite can look amazing when paired with lighter stains of wood cabinetry. The other colors in your decor will play a role in your choice, too, from the flooring to the paint

on the walls and even the kitchen hardware and appliances you’re using. Some countertop companies will even offer the experience of a decorator to help you make the right choice. If you think you might sell your home in the near future, you should think about what potential buyers might think about the countertops you select. You wouldn’t want to choose something that could fall quickly out of style or be a particularly strong, polarizing color if you might be selling the house soon. Conservative choices should win out in this case. If you’re careful with your selection and educate yourself about the wide variety of granite styles and products on the market, you can add beauty and value to your home for years to come.

High-quality granite countertops will not only make your kitchen more beautiful and stylish, but they can actually add considerable value to your home. Because of its natural beauty and durability, granite has quickly risen to become one of the most popular surfaces used for kitchen countertops today. Real estate agents know that having high-end finishes can often bring higher prices and more interested buyers at the time of sale. If you’re thinking about upgrading your countertops to granite, here are some things to keep in mind.

Heating and Cooling System Basics thermostat). The sources of warm air, such as a furnace, and cool air, such as an air conditioner, in a house often use the same distribution and control systems. If your house has central air conditioning, cool air probably flows through the same ducts that heat does and is regulated by the same thermostat. When a heating or cooling system malfunctions, any of these three basic components may be causing the problem. Both heating and air conditioning work on the principle that heat always moves from a warm object to a cooler one, just as water flows from a higher to a lower level. Furnaces and heaters put heat into the air to make your home warmer; air conditioners remove heat to make your home cooler. All heating and cooling units burn fuel. Air conditioners use electricity. Most home heating
systems use gas or fuel oil; other systems use electricity. The heat pump -- an electrically powered climate control unit -- both heats and cools air. In summer it extracts heat from the air inside your home. In winter it pulls heat from the air outside and uses this heat to warm the air inside. When the furnace is turned on, it consumes the fuel that powers it, whether it be gas, oil, or electricity. As fuel is burned, heat is
produced and channeled to the living areas of your home through ducts, pipes, or wires and then is blown out of registers, radiators, or heating panels. Older systems use the heat they produce to heat water, which in turn heats the air in your home. These systems use a boiler to store and heat the water supply, which is then circulated as hot water through pipes embedded in the wall, floor, or ceiling. When an air conditioner is turned on, electrical power is used to cool a gas in a coil to its liquid state. Warm air in your home is cooled by contact with the cooling coil, and this cooled air is channeled to the rooms of your home through ducts and out registers or -- in the case of room air conditioners -- directly from the unit itself.

Most of us take heating and cooling for granted. We expect our heating systems to keep us warm during the winter, and we depend on air-conditioning to keep us cool during the summer. When the house is cold in winter or hot in summer, the natural reaction is to call for professional service. Fortunately, there is an alternative. You can cut service costs drastically and keep your heating and cooling systems working efficiently by doing some maintenance and quick fixes yourself. But first, it’s important to know how the basics of how heating and cooling systems function. All climate-control devices or systems have three basic components: a source of warmed or cooled air, a means of distributing the air to the rooms being heated or cooled, and a control used to regulate the system (e.g.,

A Hard Choice When Choosing Flooring
for added strength, durability and stain resistance. Typically, inlaid vinyl has a high wear layer of 25 mils. As a result, it is easy to clean and will last a long time. Because of the knobby texture of rotogravure vinyl, scuff marks and stains are more difficult to remove, and with a thinner wear layer of 15 mils, life expectancy of the floor is lower than that of inlaid vinyl. Vinyl can be installed as sheets, typically in 6’ or 12’ widths or installed as tiles. Manufacturers recommend professional installation. If you are looking for a wood plank floor but don’t want to break the bank, a laminate floor may be the right choice. What is laminate? Simply put, it consists of many layers of materials pressure bonded together. Similar to laminate countertops in construction with added resins for strength, laminate flooring is available in dozens of patterns and colors, most replicating hardwoods. As a floating floor, a laminate floor is not directly attached to the subfloor, but instead lays over it, which means it can be installed over almost any existing floor, including carpeting, vinyl, concrete or ceramic. Similar to hardwood floors, it is installed as individual boards with the newest tongue-
“ONE CALL DOES IT ALL!
and-groove styles making installation a cinch as many do-it-yourselfers are discovering. As with any floor, preparation and layout is an important step. Laminate flooring can be installed over any surface, but the subfloor needs to be clean, level and solid. You might want to consider a foam underlayment to help deaden sound. For installation over concrete, experts recommend a plastic vapor barrier first be installed. Planks should be installed to run with the length of the room. For active families looking for a carefree floor, laminate is the best choice. It is tough enough to resist the scratching of pets, durable enough for little tykes to rollerskate on and does not attract dust. And with its realistic appearance and ease of installation, it’s no wonder it is quickly becoming
homeowners’ number one choice in flooring. Linoleum is another reliable hard surface that homeowners have been using for years. It is manufactured from all-natural products, such as linseed oil, cork powder, rosin and pigments, and provides a suitable surface for high-traffic areas. Today’s manufacturing processes provide an endless variety of colors and patterns to choose from. Because of its high durability and ease of maintenance, it is often selected for industrial and commercial use, with some applications lasting 30 years or more. Made from natural materials, linoleum is completely biodegradable and emits no air pollutants. If indoor air quality is a concern, consider linoleum for long-lasting beauty.

Walk into any flooring store and you will be overwhelmed with the choices of contemporary solid flooring products. With so many options available, choosing the right materials, patterns and colors can be difficult. Learning the difference between vinyl, laminate and linoleum flooring will help you select the perfect flooring for your needs. Generally speaking, all three types of solid flooring can be found in a range of prices to fit almost any budget. Vinyl flooring was typically used for kitchens, bathrooms, family rooms and entryways. But with modern manufacturing techniques, homeowners can now choose from a large array of patterns and colors, including vinyl flooring that mimics ceramic tile or slate, making it suitable for any room in the home. There are two types of vinyl flooring. Inlaid, the more expensive of the two, features color and pattern throughout all layers of material whereas rotogravure has color and pattern printed on the visible side only. Most vinyls are constructed with a top layer of urethane for durability and some have an additional layer for stain resistance. The wear layer is measured in mils with the more expensive vinyl floors having a thicker wear layer

Before You Start: Paint Tools Matter pay attention to the brush’s bristles. Synthetic bristles work best for latex paint. Natural bristles work best for oil paint. Higher quality brushes have flagged bristles. The bristles are split to hold more paint and spread it more evenly. Some brushes have tapered bristles, which are good for getting into corners and grooves. In addition to brushes, you will probably need a roller or two. U-shaped roller frames are very sturdy and easy to use. Just insert the cover, and you are ready to roll. Lamb’s wool covers work best for oil paint. ers work for oil or high-gloss latex paint. Quality, of course, matters. The best roller covers retain their shape when squeezed, have no obvious seams and have very few loose fibers. Nap is important as well. The smoother the surface you plan to paint, the shorter the nap should be. A nap of 1/8 to 1/4 works well on wallboard and smooth plaster, wood and metal. A nap of 3/8 to 1/2 works well on lightly textured stucco, concrete and rough wood. A nap of 3/4 to 1 works well on heavily textured
stucco, concrete block and brick. Depending upon where you are painting, you may even need a paint pad. Paint pads work great in hard-to-reach places like behind a toilet or radiator. Most are made of plastic foam and suit both latex and oil paint. Take the time to choose the right tools for the job. It could make all the difference in the results, and it could save you valuable time. Speak to a professional and make sure you have everything you need to get the job done right.

Love going to flea markets and picking up oil paintings? Then your style may be eclectic. Think about your clothes as well. What do you bring home for your closet? Whatever colors, textures and patterns you are drawn to in clothing, you will probably be drawn to in interior design. Your travels may also clue you in on your style. Enjoy going to the Caribbean? Then you might want to recreate that look in your home. The same goes if you prefer spending your vacation time in rustic ski lodges or lakeside cabins. If none of this research pans out, it may be time for you to take some design style quizzes online and buy some home dÊcor magazines. Page through the magazines and clip out images that appeal to you. Store them in a folder, and within a few months, you should have enough images to give you a good idea of your personal decorating style. Don’t be surprised if you like a combination of styles, like modern and eclectic. Once you have a feel for what it is that you like, you can start decorating your house to reflect that style. Keep in mind that this process will not happen overnight. Decorating a home takes time, and in some cases, years. Be prepared for your style to evolve and change over time and add and remove pieces as you see fit.

You just moved into a new home, and after a couple weeks of unpacking, you are now struggling to decorate your place and make it feel like home. Decorating is not your cup of tea, mainly because you don’t really know what your style is. You don’t know if you lean more toward contemporary or country style, or if you are eclectic. Before you start decorating, you need to have a sense of your style, and to determine this, you should study the things that surround you. Take a walk through your home. See any collections? Own a lot of lighthouse figurines and bowls of seashells? Perhaps you like the beach cottage look. Own a lot of baskets and Adirondack chairs? Perhaps you like the rustic cabin look. While reviewing your possessions, keep an eye out for any colors you are drawn toward. See a lot of rich reds and deep oranges? Then you might lean more toward ethnic style. See a lot of white and black? Then you might lean more toward contemporary or modern style. Study the furniture pieces you own that you can’t live without. These are another indication of your style. Favor wicker? Then perhaps you really do like the beach cottage look. Looked through all of your things and still don’t have a clue what your style is? Well, then, think about where you like to shop and what you bring home.

damage or spots that are clearly leaking. It is also important to keep an eye on your roof as if it begins to sag, that may be a sign that it needs to be replaced. Outside light shining through the roof into the home is also a sign that a roof may need to be replaced. It is suggested that a roof inspection be performed at least twice a year as the inspection can help to identify problem areas that need to be fixed and may help you avoid completely replacing the roof of your residence. Performing A Roof Inspection A couple of times a year, you should pull out a ladder and perform a visual inspection of the exterior of your home’s roof. terials around vents or chimneys. You should also look for signs of wear on your shingles. In addition to looking for signs of wear, perform a visual inspection to look for signs of mold, rot or moisture as well as examining your drainage system to ensure that gutters are allowing water to properly exit the roof. Gutters should be cleaned at least once a year in order to prevent water from backing up which can lead to homeowners having to replace roofs before their lifespan is up. Materials Make A Difference There are various materials that can be used in roofing and each has a different lifespan. It is important to know the materials used for your roof so that you have an idea of how long those materials normally last. Asphalt Shingles: Asphalt
shingles are a popular option due to their low costs, resiliency, and easy installation. While they can be cheap, they tend to have a shorter lifespan (15-30 years) than many other roofing materials available today. Wood Shingles: Wood shingles come in cedar, pine and other woods. While more costly upfront, wood shingles have a lifespan of approximately 30-50 years. However, they tend to have poor fire ratings and can be subject to mold and rot. Clay or Concrete Tiles: In order to install clay tiles, a home will need to have additional roof framing as they are very heavy. Clay and concrete tiles are fire resistant, can help in lower energy costs and have a lifespan of 50 years or more. Slate Tiles: Similar to clay or concrete tiles, slate tiles are incredibly heavy and require additional roof framing. Metal Roofs: Metal shingles are becoming a popular option for homeowners as they often utilize a high percentage of recycled materials and are very durable. They are also much lighter than many other roofing materials and are resistant to inclement weather. Metal shingles have a lifespan of 50 years or more.

Be Ready For Any Emergency By The Curry Coastal Pilot Another editorial on emergency preparedness? Yes! If just one Pilot reader sees this today and goes off and puts together an emergency Go Bag, or purchases some extra food and water for their home, then it’s worth repeating. Besides, Monday marked the anniversary of the last major Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake that shook the Pacific Northwest 315 years ago. Scientists predict the next major Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake could strike our off our coast at any time. New guidelines recommend
individuals prepare an emergency kit for at least two weeks; prior recommendations were for a three-day kit. Earthquakes are not the only threat. Winter storms can also cause major power outages, wash away roads and potentially strand us for days, perhaps weeks, without help from the outside world. Chances are, we’re not all going to be home when disaster strikes. What can we do? Have enough clothing, food and basic survival gear for several days in a small backpack stored in the trunk of your car and near the front door of your
residence. Emergency experts recommend creating a “Disaster Go Bag that contains all of the essentials for survival for each person in your family. It’s no bigger than the back packs that elementary school kids lug to and from home every day. And the food, clothing, first aid and other items it contains need not be expensive. A full list can be found at http://www.ready.gov.
Another essential item is a plan: Where should family members meet in case of a disaster? Do you have a place to gather? Do you have a backup place? If the answer is “no, then pick a location now. The Pilot encourages every resident to be ready. In case of an emergency, one of the best things a person can do is to take care oneself, and not become a burden to others.
