record-breaking turnout of 1,723 readers of the Del Norte Triplicate and Curry Coastal Pilot cast ballots for this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards, choosing their Del Norte and Curry County favorites in 54 categories. Those categories break down by “Best Local Food & Drink,” “People Best at What They Do” (from “Best Boss” to “Best Salesperson”) and “Best Local Places for …” shopping, entertainment, hiking – you name it. This is the fifth straight year of increased voter turnout, said Cindy Vosburg, advertising director for both newspapers. “The readers enjoy supporting their local businesses,” she said. “It’s a way to show their appreciation.” On-line voting is increasingly popular – about two-thirds of the ballots were cast electronically this year – and only one ballot was accepted per computer. Paper ballots started appearing in the newspapers several weeks ago. Not everyone voted in every category, of course, and the food categories were most popular. “Best Pizza” attracted the most votes of any category.

The overall top vote-getters were Pancho’s Restaurante for “Best Mexican Restaurant” in Curry County, and Pizza King for “Best Pizza” in Del Norte County. There were shakeups in several categories from previous contests. Newcomers in the winners circle include 6 Degrees of Celebration, Frank’s Heating & Refrigeration and Brent Hoskinson in Del Norte, and Superfly, Vista Pub and Terre Hodges in Curry. A new category this year is “Best Esthetician.” It was won by Suzanne Leighton of Your Salon in Del Norte and Danielle Doyle of Salon Dolce in Curry. Vosburg invites readers to suggest still more categories for future contests – you can email all of your ideas to her at cvosburg@triplicate.com or cvosburg@currypilot.com. In addition to winners for each county, “Other Favorites” are also listed, and it’s no small feat to make that list. “If you’re listed in there, you got a lot of votes,” Vosburg said. “It’s a real honor to be among the ‘Other Favorites.’ Your customers are definitely supporting your business and voting for you.”

Indeed, there were some wire-thin margins separating winners from “Other Favorites” in some categories. In the pages that follow, you’ll meet the winners and read in their own words the secrets to their success. Enjoy.
