Tsunami warning for 7:30 a.m. Friday Quake in Japan sends wave; forecast for 6 feet at Brookings A tsunami warning has been issued for the Oregon Coast this morning, following an earthquake off the coast of Japan. The initial forecast, issued at 2:30 a.m., is for a wave of 6 feet to reach the Southern Oregon Coast between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m., with smaller wave action coming for several hours after that. Curry County Sheriff John Bishop told the Curry Coastal Pilot just before 3 a.m. that the chief concern is for damage in the port areas of the county. You can see the official Tsunami Warning on the National Weather Service forecast by following links from www.CurryPilot.com/weather. Whether to sound tsunami warning sirens was being left to local officials. Bishop told the Pilot he was warning local fire departments just before 3 a.m., but waiting to make a decision on sounding the sirens until there was better information about the size and timing of the tsunami. Updates on local information will be posted at www.CurryPilot.com throughout the morning.

No initial reports of tsunami trouble Warning continues in effect for several hours No initial problems in Curry County have been reported in the wake of the first 30 minutes under an active tsunami warning following a massive earthquake in Japan. Meanwhile, an official tsunami warning remains in effect from the National Weather Service. The Pilot has reporters at several locations overlooking coastal areas, and have seen no unusual wave action. The water rise from the tsunami was predicted to be about 6 feet in Brookings. Downtown areas of Crescent City remain under mandatory evacuation and Crescent City schools are closed today. Curry County Sheriff John Bishop first issued an official warning about 2 a.m. today, and sounded the county's tsunami warning sirens at 4 a.m. "to err on the side of caution." The Curry Coastal Pilot started posting information about the warning at 3 a.m., but heavy traffic to the newspaper's website -- www.CurryPilot.com -- appears to have caused it to crash. Technicians are working on the problem.

Two surges reported at Brookings Nothing unusual sighted at Gold Beach At least two surges of tsunami action have been visible about 8:30 a.m. at the Port of BrookingsHarbor, according to editor Scott Graves. The second surge, he reports, tore a sailboat from its mooring near the fuel dock at the port. Otherwise, he said, the water level looked like "a super high tide." At Crescent City, two surges have also been seen, according to Richard Weins, editor of The Daily Triplicate, causing damage at the Crescent City Harbor. Authorities there are telling him that a larger surge is expected within the hour, and downtown Crescent City remains evacuated, and schools in Crescent City are closed for the day. Meanwhile, staff writer Val Corley has been watching the ocean at the Port of Gold Beach, and reports no unusual water action. Lots of coastal residents have gone to headlands to watch for signs of the tsunami. At the South Coast Shopping Center in Harbor, one of the official evacuation sites, stores are serving coffee and donuts to those waiting out the alert. The official warning will remain in effect for several hours, according to the National Weather Service. And our apologies: The heavy traffic to the Pilot's website - www.currypilot.com -- has crashed our file server and it is offline. Technicians are working on the problem.
