With record participation in the 2014 Readers Choice Awards, readers of the Del Norte Triplicate and Curry Coastal Pilot clearly enjoy the opportunity to share what they love about their corner of the world. There was an 18 percent increase in voter turnout over last year. A total of 1,533 people cast ballots, compared to 1,300 last year. Voters were almost evenly split between Del Norte and Curry counties. The food categories remain the favorite with breakfast, pizza and seafood bringing in the most votes. For the second year in a row, Tiffany Eld of Fisherman’s Restaurant in Crescent City came in with Favorite Food Server in Del Norte. A new restaurant owner in Brookings, Kylie Krebs of Black Trumpet Bistro, won the Curry County Favorite Server award. The votes for best place to escape, walk
your dog, and beachcombing show the readers in Curry County dearly love their beaches in Southern Oregon, and Del Norte County readers dearly love theirs in Northern California. Many voters choose to drive inland a few miles to gaze at the stars. When it came to favorite businesses and business people, the readers in both counties were very loyal to their business communities. The spread between first place, second place and third in some of the categories were only two or three votes. Considering some of these categories had more than 1,500 votes this made for really close races. Ties in Curry County for Favorite Insurance Agent between the two State Farm Insurance agents and a near-tie in Del Norte County between its State Farm Insurance agents made for some interesting double and triple counting of the votes. At the end of the day, Mary Dorman
beat out Lisa McKeown by a mere two votes in Del Norte. Another tie in Curry County was for Favorite Mortgage Agent, with Tami Konkel of Baywest Mortgage and Connie Bay of Rogue Credit Union sharing the same number of votes. Sadly, the winner in Del Norte County for Favorite Mortgage Agent is no longer in business. Jamie O’Brien closed up her North Coast Mortgage company at the end of 2013.
